They were obviously trying to push people out of the café a little over 30 minutes before close... as someone who was a barista, even if they had already cleaned out the machines for the day, they looked annoyed that we ordered coffee at a café and it was about 4:10 (They close at 5). Price was great-- and honestly if the people were nicer, we would've definitely ended up back there because we frequent the Tea spot next-door. we also got a chicken salad sandwich, which had very little chicken in it... We were not able to identify any the entire thing. also did not feel fresh in anyway, felt like it had been sitting there for at least all day would even go as far to say as it could've been yesterday. Ambience definitely not great for people who don't like to sit in dead silence. the entire place... On the other hand, if you are someone who needs to go work at a place with zero distractions, it's probably a good corner to sit in... But not much else. I never take the time to make I understand. I'm enjoying this large chai tea latte. When I ordered, the kind gent offered honey or vanilla! The honey for the win! As soon as I have room, I'm getting some food, possibly to go! The location is super convenient, as named, right on the bus line. With crazy mocha gone and Starbucks down this street, it gets very busy during peak times, even just before 11, as I would imagine students are heading to classes. I am, more and more, stopping in at places that I have walked by so many times but never visited. This is one of those places, and I was brought here by a colleague for an informal meeting. This is a small place, but packs all kinds of options that every cafe should have. I actually had breakfast here and then came back just a bit later for lunch, when I saw the breakfast wrap that I wanted to try (for lunch, that is!). They had a long list of teas available here, which I appreciated as a rare coffee drinker. (After all, they have to compete with Dobra Tea just down the street! ;-) ) I also learned that it is named after the bus line that goes by here (I thought it was 61 degrees celsius -- maybe that is a bit too hot!!) Wonderful cafe in squirrel hill perfect for a drink on the go or a space to get work done. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside on the patio. The tables are arranged for two people per table but there was lots of availability even when I went on a busy Saturday. There were also several outlets in case you needed to charge your devices. The menu had lots of drink options including smoothies, coffee, and teas. There was also more food options than I expected! They had pastries, cookies, bagels, scones, and more. Cozy local place with solid coffee and all homemade pastries. I live in the area and come here a lot. The manager is lovingly grumpy, but can take as good as gives. They make all the pastries right there behind the bar. If you are there when stuff comes out of the tiny, but very hardworking oven, you should definitely get it (especially the cinnamon scones!). Love this quirky little coffee shop in my neighborhood. It's not fancy which is part of the charm. It's full of "regulars" and a popular place to meet up with a friend or colleague. Has a broad menu of coffees, teas and some smoothies. They make all their own baked goods every morning -- muffins, bagels, cookies, pasties, croissants, etc. Coffee is generally good but the barristas cycle in and out, a lot of college kids, so sometimes coffee quality is inconsistent. Wish I could give give this zero stars, but alas. Here's a recommendation: go to commonplace instead. Ordered an iced chai and the cranberry granola with yogurt. The worker clearly had no idea what he was doing, was tripping over things and took about 20 minutes to serve each customer. Half the things people ordered, they were out of, including the entire fresh juice menu besides apples. He gave me no choice of milk for the chai, and I received a cup of basically the most disgusting skim milk that tasted sour, with what seemed like one sprinkle of cinnamon in it. And this is coming from someone who is a loyal chai drinker everyday and has tried many a chai in her time. The granola was good, but was buried so deeply in watery yogurt which was disgustingly cheap tasting, and seemed like something that would be from a motel that happened to have a breakfast bar that had never been updated. We also ordered a juice, since they only had apples (??), which was surprisingly good, but still, I shall be giving my patronage elsewhere, as both my chai and granola went directly in the trash outside, and was not edible. Hope I don't get food poisoning. Please improve everything about this establishment, hire new baristas who actually know what they are doing and aren't clueless and frumpy (and immediately run to slump over their phone when done "serving" (that's a stretch) patrons), or perhaps just close as nothing is worth keeping there besides maybe a baked good here and there. read more

I can't believe I haven't been in here before after so many years of living here! I always thought it was a restaurant but it actually is a cafe. They have a large menu of drinks. I had a chai latte with oat milk and my partner had an espresso drink. He said it was ok. I think my chai latte was ok too, nothing to write home about. It was overly milky and there wasn't a strong chai flavor. It's cute and rustic inside here and is a good place to have a chat or do some work during the day. While searching for a place to get coffee in Pittsburgh on a Tuesday afternoon, I found this coffee shop. It was one of the only few local coffee shops that were open after 4 pm. I think that's why I like it so much. The inside is small and has a comfortable, artsy vibe. I got a Baklava and a vanilla latte here. The Baklava was good; it was crispy and sweet. I also really like their hot lattes here. I personally like my hot lattes with a lot of foam, and they made it with about 1 to 2 inches of foam, which I really liked. If you don't like foam, then I think it would not be preferable or you should ask for light foam. I went another time after and got a vanilla latte again and a chocolate M&M cookie. The latte was consistent and still good, but the M&M coffee was hard and brittle. read more

Stopped in to this long-time Squirrel Hill favorite for a smoothie the other day. Who knew the had smoothies?! It was a hot afternoon so I was excited at the prospect of something fruity and refreshing. Alas, the told me they they were out of all juice options aside from carrot. Then they were out of blueberries, so I went with strawberry. A carrot-strawberry smoothie with a touch of yogurt? Can't say I have ever seen or drank something like this before. It was pretty good actually, not very sweet but refreshing still. They also put real carrot and real frozen strawberries in it. A bit small for $6 though. I was definitely intrigued by the novelty but likely will go elsewhere the next time I crave a smoothie because this cafe was not well stocked. read more

This is a solid enough spot, but nothing extraordinary or even especially well executed. It being cash only is a bit of a drag, as are the abundance of rickety chairs and tables. Of greater concern though are the acoustics: the space is small, packed with the aforementioned tables and chairs, and lacks proper consideration for the way sound bounces about. If it's busy or even remotely trafficked, be prepared to hear multiple conversations stacking upon either your own or the music pumping through your headphones. Should anyone order anything steamed, you're going to have a hard time concentrating on any other sound. The green tea latte I ordered was tasty, but not particularly memorable. Credit where credit is due: it is a really good spot to hunker down and do some laptop work for an extended spell. read more

We stumbled upon here during their 61st anniversary special where the cappuccinos were 61 cents. We ordered two cappuccinos that came quickly in a ceramic mug. The coffee was mild tasting and there was a thick foam on the top. I prefer my foam with smooth microfoam so this cappuccino was disappointing. We also had a biscotti too which was just alright. The did have a nice outside area to sit which is nice to enjoy in the summer time. Would not go here for full price, but I can't complain for $0.61! read more

I think 61C is a little-underrated for the area, possibly because it is low-key. It thankfully lacks the sterility of the chains available around up street without having any hints of pretentiousness. I went midday on a weekend and it was quiet and spacious. I felt welcomed by all the space. I'm a shy person, but I'm working on asking what's in drinks before ordering them. The barista on staff at the time was totally into that, and answered all of my questions. From his answers, I decided on a smoothie made with cow milk and real fruit (I chose banana and mango). To his credit, when I asked for milk, he confirmed what type of milk I wanted--that would have been a good save had I meant something else--good job. I do hope he ate the extras that did not fit in the glass he served me! This was a 4 star smoothie. It was simple and very good. It was also thick enough for my tastes--I only like smoothies thick. It is not in the same league as the $8 smoothies down the hill, but I wasn't expecting that. I'm glad that there is another decent smoothie option that I know about in Squirrel Hill. What 61C deserves 5 stars for is the looks of their baked goods. Nothing turns me off faster than baked goods wrapped in plastic wrap. I don't know what does it, but all desire to eat goes out the window for me. So, conversely, in 61C with their long counter of beautiful glass jars of perfectly round giant cookies, long thick biscotti, and platters of muffins and other goodies, really made me salivate. I had my eye on a specific blueberry muffin and asked the barista for it and he confirmed which exact muffin I wanted--good job. The free water was easy to find. The wifi password was in a good location and the wifi worked well for me during my visit. The muffin was a little different than expected as it was more like a bread than a cake, meaning that it did not crumb when I pulled pieces off. It was enjoyable, just different. It was a good combo with the smoothie, although I have to say it was still a bit sugar-licious for lunch...I felt the effects later when I crashed. I want to come back and try more yummies...and try coffee with the other half. My sense of their menu is they take it seriously enough (without doing ballet with it). read more

Pretty nice coffee shop near a lot of other fun stuff on Murray. Awesome stop after some shopping and easily walkable if you're already in Squirrel Hill. I stopped by during the Night Market for their BOGO cappuccino deal (having a very high caffeine tolerance, I kept both for myself, boyfriend opted for a juice) - very tasty and well made drinks! They have a nice selection of pastries and granola as well to snack on. Another customer ahead of me got a smoothie and I was pleased to see fresh, whole apples going into the blender along with scoopfuls of their granola. While on my first visit to 61C I questioned its merit, this little coffee shop has really grown on me for a variety of reasons. First, while it looks meager from the outside, the inside is fairly large, bright, and clean. I have never had to fight for a seat, unlike the delicious but packed Commonplace up the street. There is also a little outdoor seating area, which is lovely in the warm weather. Yes, they are always out of about half of the fruits for the smoothies, and paying $5.62 with tax for a smoothie that may not be exactly what I wanted does not thrill me. But the baristas are really great about helping anyone find a combination that goes well together. Blueberry, apple, banana is always good, and I just tried a yummy blackberry, pear, banana one the other day. I love smoothies and seeing them put all of the fresh fruit into my drink makes me so happy. I actually like their coffees and hot chocolate too, but I do favor Commonplace up the street for these things. 61C is a better price and larger portion, but they haven't won me over for those things yet. Additionally, the baked good are yummy, and there are always so many to choose from! They definitely have the market for most options of baked goods with your drink of choice. Probably the best part about 61C is the hours. They are often open when no one else is, and it is nice that they are open until 10:00 PM. Now if they would just get Square... Cash only. read more

I hate to do this, but based on my experience last night, I feel that I need to write an update and decrease my rating. First, the positives: The baristas last night (both female) were very helpful and upbeat, unlike the baristas I'm used to dealing with here. One of them made me an awesome smoothie consisting of blueberries, pineapple, cherry, and pear (see photo), and it was amazing. My only complaint is that I noticed there was some left over from the blending, and it would have been nice to have offered it to me (though I didn't notice until too late). I also ordered a mocha cappuccino that was pretty good, and well-caffeinated, as my friends can attest by my high-energy talkativeness after drinking it. Despite these positives, we encountered several issues. First, one of my friends ordered a red velvet biscotti, and tasted a moldy flavor when he bit into it (I confirmed the odd taste). He informed them of the problem, and they did credit him for it, but I'm not sure if they discarded the rest of that type of biscotti. Second, when I went to use the bathroom to wash up, the toilet seat was sporting some pretty gross stains (please pardon the graphic image). Third, when we returned our dishes when we went to leave, I noticed that one of the "clean" water cups had some serious residue from some other drink. I grabbed it and placed it with our dirty dishes, but still, the baristas should eyeball them before placing them in the clean stacks, so that obviously dirty cups don't end up there. In general, I still like the 61C and most of what they serve, and my friends and I will probably be back, since it's convenient for them and a great hang out spot. I'll give the benefit of the doubt of half of a star due to the friendly service and delicious smoothie, but they really need to take care of the blatant issues I mentioned to avoid scaring people away. 3.5 stars. read more

As an experienced connosseur of good quality coffee shops with their products - in Chicagoland area and in Squirrel Hill (Pittsburgh, Pa.) - I was generous in not mentioning to - Keith - the owner/manager that - at least - several times I paid "good/decent" money for stale - old - not good tasting muffins which still - looked good on the serving plate. That happened on several occassions during the Summer 2022. However - this morning - Fri. Feb. 10 - 2023 - after paying for latte (not exorbitant but not the low price either) and giving a tip to the person who made it - I discovered upon tasting it that it was - only luke warm - instead of being hot. I have asked Keith to stick it in a microvawe for several seconds. He responded in a very rude/obnoxious tone of voice and manner - that he is busy with another customer and I should wait.
