I normally wouldn't review a 7-11, but this place is much more than that! They stock specialty sodas for cheaper prices than Galco's! Curiosity Cola (my favorite!), bottled Dr. Pepper from Dublin Tx, birch beer, root beer, orange cream, Cheerwine, etc were typically a dollar cheaper than other places. You name it they got it! Amazing selection. Lots of beer choices too, but honestly I was all about the sodas at this place. There was a cop hanging around in the parking lot.. but it was after 1 am. 1 am soda fix! read more

I haven't written a review in a while because I was at 99 reviews and I wanted to make my 100th review something special. The question of how to go about doing that ended up creating enough inertia that my Yelping activities had come to a halt. Finally I decided that my super-special 100th review would be on... drum roll please... a 7-Eleven. Why, out of all the fantastic things in Los Angeles, would I choose a 7-Eleven? I'm one of those folks that really doesn't see the point in reviewing major chains. I tend to roll my eyes whenever I see a review for a Vons or a Starbucks or a Del Taco. They're all the same in the end. The experience you get at one McDonald's is essentially going to be the same across the board everywhere else you go, plus or minus half a star. That's the whole idea behind chains. You know what you're getting into. Major chains are safe and familiar, albeit boring choices. But I think the inquisitive and curious spirit behind Yelp demands more! That is why, when one 7-Eleven rises above its mediocre brethren, it deserves recognition. To begin with, there's the general atmosphere. The owner and manager, Charles, is a middle-aged guy who is generally dressed in all black, can often be found behind the counter with his employees, and blasts rock and roll on the store's stereo system, earning this location the nickname the "Rock-n-Roll 7-Eleven" from some. It's a far cry from the cold and unfriendly demeanor of most 7-Elevens. But what makes this Highland Park gem really shine is its fantastic beer selection. Most 7-Elevens, if they carry beer at all, will only have the usual Big 3 of domestic swill - Millers, Bud, and Coors - along with the ever mediocre imports of Heineken, Corona, and Modelo. Those options are still here, but what's surprising is that there is equal shelf space given to a dizzying array of Belgian ales and microbrews. We're talking selections from Russian River, Three Philosophers, Delerium, Chimay, Stone Brewing, Lost Coast Brewing, Indica, Alaskan Brewing, Alesmith, a wide gamut of Rogue, Lagunitas, Anderson Valley, the list goes on and on... And if that's not enough, they even sell properly branded glassware behind the counter for your beer connoisseuring needs. Considering most dedicated liquor stores are unable to boast a selection half as impressive, all beer lovers out there owe it to themselves to make a stop at the Rock-n-Roll 7-Eleven and support an exceptional example of an otherwise prosaic chain. I'm a 711 coffee devotee. I'll take it over Starbucks ANY day!!!!! This 711 is nice and clean. There is always parking but getting out of the lot can be a bitch in the morning. The main reason I'm writing this review is the great service I encountered here. I thought I lost/left my wallet in the store. I went back in the afternoon and inquired with the manager. He was so nice, took my number, and told me that he would check the tapes. I ended up finding my wallet in my car (yikes, I felt like an idiot!) and went back two days later to let him know. He said he tried to call me because he watched the tape and said I walked out with wallet in hand. I thought that he totally went above and beyond in trying to help me. I will continue to get my coffee fix here on the way to work! read more

Be careful, all 711 stores are equal, BUT some are more equal than others. For example the 711 on Rt 52 in Carmel NY sells 711 stuff but it's just a front. It's not a 711 store at all. I came into this 7-11 looking to grab a big gulp cup so that I could conceal my Bootleggers Brewery Knuckle Sandwich DIPA for when I was going to do a taco stand/truck crawl over on York blvd. But to my surprise I realize that this 7-11 isn't just any old 7-11. While they still have a vast amount of tall boys and other ghetto-fab beers you would find your local wine-o drinking, sitting on the cold shelf in the fridge section is some really good and uncommon to even most Bevmo's beers. For example they had various Port Brewing Mongo sitting right next to Wipe out IPA. This is unheard of for a 7-11 to carry a craft beer like that. The price wasn't even that bad at around $6.99. It's not more than a buck or so difference and you don't even have to hit up a whole foods to find it. So I got to say, I was impressed. Especially when I saw plenty of Stone beers there. both in sixer's and bombers. That is very impressive for a 7-11 to carry. Really makes you rethink if that slurpee is what you really want to satisfy you on a hot So Cal summer day. read more

Writing a review of someplace this corporate is DEFINITELY not my style. But an exception must be made here. Too many rad freak occurrences have gone on at this 7-11; my 7-11. I drove by a million times and thought, "Hah! Suckers. Yeah, I see your sign outside advertising all those delicious beers that I buy all the time like Anchor Steam. Too bad I'm on my way to Galco's to support the independent." Then, one night when my roommate and I are having family dinner, my boyfriend shows up fairly late in the evening with some mighty enticing-looking six packs in tow. And I'm not talking about Pabst Blue Ribbon. I'm too much of a beer snob to drink that crap. (Though, okay, I will confess, Miller High Life kinda does rule.) I say, "Damn, where'd you find frigging Liberty Ale this late at night?" "That 7-11 at Ave 52 and Figueroa is awesome!" he declares. "It was almost like a liquor store, they had such a good beer selection! They were even playing good music!" Interesting. I shrugged it off and cracked a beer. ... until one night, The boyfriend, his roommate and I were riding our bicycles back to Echo Park from Pasadena (drunk, kinda.) We pulled into this very 7-11 for some Gatorade and snacks and they were playing the fucking soundtrack to "You Only Live Twice." At two in the frigging morning! When we made a huge scene over it, the clerk looked at us with this expression like, "Um, yeah you losers, we always play this." Awesome. The last time I had buddies over for a barbeque, my friend Jonah came in with a twelver of some South American beer I had never heard of. It was really good. What in the blue hell happened to this place? All of the items that made this 7 Eleven special is all gone. The funky independent sodas and beer, and 75% of the magazines are gone. The nice sodas, like the ones where you get at Galco's, are replaced with 7 Eleven brand soda. Gross! Over the last who-knows-how-long (most definitely within the last year or two and a half, to be 'precise') this late nite ex-hellhole seems to have morphed into the funnest most jovial chill hang in the whole wide 7-11 Franchise Empire, staffed (and perhaps owned) by a loose collective of Highland Park Club Kids, never fazed by the non-ending stream of late night cretins, ne'er do-wells, and nocturnal denizens you've ever witnessed this side 'o' motley. Where else can you engage in a slightly past 2am, completely random counter chat with a friendly cash register dood clutching two fuses explaining that he needs to install them in his car so that he can get to and from work one of these days.... ME (perplexed and flummoxed): 'So, ummm...then how do you get to work now, then, if your car's been outta commission for so long?' COUNTER DOOD: 'I take my skateboard.' ME: 'So then you don't really need your car then, right? COUNTER DOOD: 'Yea, actually i really don't. But it would be nice to have anyway...i guess....' On the way out, I am approached by a bloke marinated in booze circling around his car where inside sit three portly ladies. He's clearly agitated. PARKING LOT GUY:(In Broken English)--'Hey man, 2am, no alcohol!!??!!? Why? Why? What is...wrong?' ME: 'Yeah, Cali. Closes too early. 2am! Sucks!' PARKING LOT GUY: 'Yea, mang, no like Miami. I feel like when I enter this 7-11, there should be a circus ringmaster with a megaphone screaming, "PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE GREATEST 7-11 ON EARTH. MARVEL AT THE NUMEROUS DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS 7-11 AND OTHER CONVENIENCE STORES!" Now it isn't perfect: The slurpee machines don't make margaritas. The hot dogs haven't been replaced with filet mignon. and the clerks haven't been replaced with half naked Kat Dennings clones but it is so damned near close to perfect. The music playing is almost always interesting. I can't tell you how many times the soundtrack to a 007 movie is playing. This makes late night shopping feel like a secret agent style mission: "You mission, if you choose to accept it, is to buy chips, dips and beer for the party in 5 minutes. This message will self destruct" They also have sort of a Mini Galco's vibe: When was the last time you saw Orange Creme Soda at a 7-11? When was the last time you were able to buy Chimay or Samuel Smith Stouts at 7-11? The beer selection here is the best that any 7-11 has ever offered. The best part? It is a hop, skip and a jump from my house. Take that hipsters of Echo Park! The only thing your 7-11 has is a huge amount of cops that stare down anyone who buys booze. read more

Out of most of the 7-Elevens' I have been to, this one is some how the coolest one. It does have many stuff inside that are a bit overpriced, like most of them (cheap mother f*ckers). I've been to a couple over the years, and this one stands out more than the rest. Okay, it's just another 7-Eleven, nothing speacial, nothing really different. It's not like the first thing you come in here your going to sh*t yourself because of how awesome it is. The one thing about this one is how clean it is, especailly because of the area. It's located next to a Food-4-Less that is nothing in the morning, then turns into a food spot that infested with nothing but bums and mexicans (Im not lieing). The prices are the same: the slushies are the same (it's pretty f*cken good for the price). The clerks treat you better here than anywhere else. 11:30pm on a random Satuday night. Yet again, we dicked around all day and forgot to pick up some decent beers. Galcos-closed. Red Carpet Wine and Liquor- also closed. I'm not a beer snob, and I can definitely sit down and enjoy an average newkie brown or even a damn corona. But sometimes you just desire a decent nightcap. Here's where this particular 7-11 steps in. For some odd reason, the owner or managers decided to stock the place with random microbrews and a sweet selection of Belgium ales. I cannot remember exactly what the place had, but the selection seemed quite impressive at the time. And not only can I pick up some beer, I can also get some beef jerky/cheese combo-pack thing for an extra two bucks. Then I brown bag it back to the apartment while munching on delcious processed cheese food and meat. Mmm good. read more

If you're a big beer drinker (no, I'm not referring to downing a case of Natty Ice by yourself), this is definitely as good as it gets in the way of 7-11s. Owner Bob opened up this branch of the franchise because he realized that 7-11 was the largest beer distributor in California, and if they were going to be the place people went for beer, why not give them a few more options? Recognizing his nearby competitors Red Carpet in Glendale and Galco's in Eagle Rock, Bob set out to find really rare brews--not just your standard household names in the craft brewing world, but unique finds people couldn't even get at Galco's. On a recent trip, I found the Lagunitas Lucky 13, which Red Carpet doesn't even have, and the Avery Sixteen Saison, a seasonal from the Boulder brewery that usually only shows up in L.A. in the form of White Rascal. On top of the beer selection [not to mention competitive prices], the place also stocks a pretty decent selection of Unibroue flutes and other beer-friendly glassware. And perhaps as just one more kick in Galco's face, Bob stocks specialty sodas, too--don't drink? Get a Jolt fix here, or try Ironbeer soda. I'm not sure what that is yet, but I'll let you know when I find out. read more

This 7-11 should by no means have a four star rating. I guess it used to be some kind of beer mecca, but now all it is is an uncomfortable place to buy crappy, overpriced food and lukewarm, sour coffee. Seriously, what is wrong with the coffee here now?? They have like 75 gigantic containers and even when they're 3 minutes old the coffee is disgustingly strong. Most of the containers contain hours-old coffee that is now strong, lukewarm and sour. Yay!!! If you ask the motley crew of employees which coffee is the freshest they have strange responses, alternating from outright hostility to an uncomfortable exchange in which they blame the other employees for cold coffee and then set about to making a new, intolerably intense batch. 2 stars for the bounty of splenda and decent cocoa. Also for the few male employees who are relatively normal, like the guy with the curly hair and glasses and the middle-aged guy with the ruddy face, Unfortunately, the majority of the employees are strangely silent and relatively hostile, I've noticed. I actually hate walking into this place. It's like you have to parade past them while they judge you for coming in and bothering their quiet time. And also, this place is ALWAYS closed at night. No sign, no explanation, just closed and locked, employees nowhere to be seen. Once we went late at night and it was locked (yet again) and my friend kicked the glass door and it cracked, It was awesome. read more

This has been my 7-Eleven for almost three years now, and i really like it. Yes, the beer selection is amazing--for a 7-11 and even for a corner liquor store. Some nice Belgian ales. You can also get a decent bottle of wine! Also: I think the guy who runs it must take hiring very seriously, because all of the people working here are so incredibly nice. I've dragged my ass in here looking pretty sorry and woebegone, and whoever is at the register always has a smile for me or a kind word. Magazine selection is also atypical. After hearing the local praise, I am glad to share my jumping on this store's regular bandwagon as well. My review, in large part, is dedicated to the customer service side of the business which will probably go unnoticed with the beer and soda selection previously aforementioned. If you take a close look at the employees, the vast majority of the workers are teenagers- kids trying to make a paycheck or decent living. I am repeatedly amazed at how courteous, attentive, and respectful the rather large group can truly be. My first trek to the market was for a guilty pleasure- a beer to finish off the day. But, the second guesser I am, I was at odds as to which to buy on a limited budget. Ironically enough, a kid not wearing a uniform spent a helpful amount of time leading me to, frankly, a great decision-bottle of rogue stout. The beauty of it is, you don't expect that from a convenience store- the beer, and the help in a place that is meant to have you in and out in a matter of minutes. But lo and behold, there it was, where you least expect it. My repeated visits ensured continued assistance- whether its directions, a photocopy, or even a cab haha- the employees there are great and friendly. I would advise beer enthusiasts to look for the employee without a uniform (sp?), who has on more than one occasion found a seemingly missing bottle of wine and beer in backstock. He is somewhat of a regular employee and admittedly, a (quirky) college student. The store itself has an above par magazine selection, and even some rare cat food which I would endorse, although rather pricy. Parking at night can be hectic, so I would advise patience on that front. read more

Every time I go here, I am met by 2-3 panhandlers asking for change on the way IN and again on the way OUT. One of them are really aggressive. I caught the female walking by my car and peeking into the window. I am empathetic to those in need, but when it becomes this bad it's downright annoying. Why does the management allow this?!? RIP Coolest 7-Eleven ever. I used to tell people I live in Highland Park, and they would say, you must have a lot of great Mexican food near you, and I said, yeah, and the best 7-Eleven ever! The microbrews, the imports, the cool indy mags, the ice cream flavors, the rock and roll! Alas, I came in one day recently, and there was no 400 flavors of ice cream, there were no cool microbrews, no beer magazines, no wines, no awesome rock playing. There was icky pop music, low-end ice cream, budweiser and doritos. So I asked the clerk, "what happened? This used to be the coolest 7-Eleven in the whole world!" And he said, "It sold, and pursuant to 7-Eleven franchise guidelines, there must be a minimum of regulation, approved stock. Don't worry, after a while, we can bring it all back." So he says. For a while, I had a soft spot for this location, even though I'm usually not a fan of chain stores. Mainly for their impressive beer selection. But a lot of other stores in the neighborhood have caught up with them on that front, and offer comparable selections at way lower prices. For instance, a beer I recently discovered and like quite a bit, Ninkasi 'Total Domination,' is $8.76 w/ tax here. At the family-owned shop on Monte Vista and Ave 50? $4.75. Craft beers are typically $2 more than the price listed on the cooler. When I ask the manager about the price discrepancy, he just shrugs. Previously, when a bottle of wine came up several dollars more expensive than the price on the sticker, the same manager said, "Maybe you switched the price. How do I know?" Late at night, they're often the only option, so I'll still stop in once in a while. But I'll go out my way to avoid them. Make no mistake: these people are thieves. read more

This is a good location to stop by for a snack once in a good while. They have the drinks from beer that's a good selection, wine, and all the soda with the big gulp if you're willing to go for it.
