I wanted to support this business because it's always nice to see new places, and I genuinely hope they succeed. The halo-halo was good, and I enjoyed it. However, the customer service was disappointing. When my wife, daughter, and I walked in, the owners appeared to be chatting with friends while we stood at the counter for several minutes without being acknowledged. Even a simple "Hi, we'll be with you in a moment" would have made us feel welcome. When someone finally took our order, we mentioned that it was our first visit, but there was no effort to explain the menu or recommend anything. For customers who are new to halo-halo or to the shop, a little guidance can make a big difference. We spent about $23 for two items, which is reasonable if it comes with a welcoming experience. Good food brings customers in the first time, but great customer service is what keeps them coming back. I'm giving this place 3 stars because the halo-halo was good, but I hope the owners focus more on greeting customers and creating a friendlier atmosphere. Stopped by after lunch in Glendale after eagerly anticipating the chance to finally try their Halo Halo. Unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment. We ordered both the regular Halo Halo and the "Upside Down" Halo Halo. The regular version tasted like it had coffee ice cream, which completely threw me off. I kept wondering if I had been given the wrong order because it definitely wasn't the classic flavor I expected. The "Upside Down" Halo Halo was even more confusing, it looked exactly like a regular Halo Halo. For those unfamiliar with this Filipino dessert, the traditional Halo Halo has all the mix-ins at the bottom. So if you're going to call something "upside down," wouldn't it make sense for those ingredients to be on top? Just saying. There were other issues as well. Instead of traditional pinipig (toasted/puffed rice flakes), they used Frosted Flakes (the cereal!). The boba were scarce and hard, there were only a few strands of jackfruit, a sliver of flan, and coconut jellies. Most notably, it lacked classic ingredients like sweetened beans and macapuno that give authentic Halo Halo its signature flavor and texture. If you're looking for a traditional Halo Halo, this isn't it. I have to disagree with the claims that Cafe 86 serves the best Halo Halo, in my opinion, it's one of the worst I've had (with Manila Inasal's coconut milk version still being my least favorite). At $11.50 each, the portion size and quality simply don't justify the price. The Frosted Flakes didn't work for me, and what tasted like coffee ice cream completely changed the dessert's flavor profile. The problem with many modern dessert shops is that they try to reinvent traditional favorites for the mainstream but end up losing the essence of what made them special in the first place. Authentic Halo Halo is all about the balance of classic ingredients and textures, and this version missed the mark. Would I come back? Never. Would I recommend it? Absolutely not. If you're craving a more traditional Halo Halo, I'd recommend heading to Max's in Glendale instead. read more

This time around I got a matcha drink and my husband got a calamansi juice. The calamansi juice was so refreshing on a hot day and the matcha was a great pick me up. Honestly this cafe 86 is my favorite . The decor is top notch. They have some things that are like , if you know you know. I'd have some of these things in my man cave if I could. Ordered a matcha from here and the crack cheesecake. The matcha was a tad sweet for my taste but I had lowered the amount. The music was pretty good and they played hiphop. Went for the halo halo. One upside down halo halo and one mais. I've had the upside down one at the West Covina location. Love how it's mostly Ube ice cream, hence the upside down! The Mais want not corny at all, no pun intended. It was just creamed corn at the bottom. No other jellies. Maybe if they put corn ice cream? Pretty good place to chill out. I LOVE LOVE cafe 86. Psyched that the eagle rock one is open! Recently met the new owners Elaine and Andrew, who are super friendly and sweet. They are so excited to own this awesome shop. Staff here is super kind and friendly but my drink just did not come out well. I asked if the Thai milkshake was good and the cashier said it was one of their most popular drinks. Great! Well either they made the drink wrong or didn't give me the right drink because what I got was not a Thai tea "milkshake" rather a frozen block of Thai tea full of ice chunks. The regular size is pretty big though so I'd probably get the mini next time Halo halo bread pudding: 2/5 -- they heat it up for you which is nice but the bread pudding just tasted overwhelmingly of banana bread and had a stodgy texture that I didn't care for. For the inside spacing of this location, it's good for studying but may need to add more comfortable seating to entice customers to hang out. They have WiFi but no visible outlets (come with charged devices if you plan on staying long to do work ). It's good to try even if you're not a pumpkin spice person. The baked goods are the real highlight. The Turon Poptart tender to be sweet and tropical tasting due to the saba bananas. If you take longer bites and savor the taste you can taste it. The breading feels thicker and sometimes all I can taste is the bread. The Ube Poptart is stronger in taste and better out of the two. Recommended treats (for those who have sweet tooth): 1. Ube Truffle ($4.50 for one) It's substantially large for a single. This location stayed true to recipe by making them moist and soft, yet it kept a slight crunch in each bite (easy to eat). 2. Ube Crinckles 3. Halo Halo Bread Pudding If you live near the area, very convenient to have delicious baked goods to share with friends or family. I really wanted to try their Ube Leche Flan, unfortunately during my vist, they have already sold out of the delicious treat - I ended up bring home a couple Ube Butter bars and their Halo Halo. The Ube butter bar was rich and delectable but I got to say, you don't want to over dose on this - reiterating that this sinfully good treat is VERY RICH, the ube is delicately infused to their buttery deliciousness.
