Our experience was a huge disappointment. We ordered the seafood paella and the one with the meat and vegetables. The seafood paella was so salty and fishy ( the flavor you get when seafood isn't fresh ) , it was barely edible. The lobster tail was tiny and there was 1 shrimp in whole paella -both were rubbery and overcooked. My husband's meat and vegetables paella had very little meat and no flavor. We were also charged for bread and olive oil we didn't order. The server didn't ask. We had reservations and arrived early. Restaurant was not busy but was told by the woman at the front to go away and come back later. Don't know why people like this place-perhaps because it's been there a long time. read more

This place is super popular and we didn't have reservations. Luckily as a party of 2 it's a bit easier to get a seat. It was pretty quiet as we waited outside to be seated. Upstairs were full also but since it was smaller it wasn't quite as noisy which was nice. The place is decked out with white table cloth, first thing that comes to mind "FANCY". We sat there a bit as we had no idea what we want to order. Finally we ordered a salad and two types of paella. One with seafood and the other with a bit of other meats. I was super hungry and knowing they charge for bread I went ahead and ate it anyways. Love balsamic it was good. When our Paellas came we were blown away it was alot of food lol. It was also good. Tldr: Solid, flavorful paellas and a positive experience. Avoid wait times by making reservations. Also, everywhere I've dined in Barcelona, they charge for bread. (I go to Vietnam often where they can put a crapload of stuff on your table and they don't charge you unless you touch it) It seems to be a Spanish or Barcelona thing. So i won't take stars away for that. Olives here are free though! My friend and I came here with no rezzies for our last meal in Barcelona on a Sunday around 8. Our wait time was and estimated 45 minutes but it ended up being about 60. No big deal. The doorman gave us a heads up about not being for sure about the estimate. He was a nice dude. My friend and I walked around and it was a nice walk! Close to a mall on the port. The interior is nice and sets a great environment. My friend and I ordered the chicken&ham croquettes, two non vegetarian paellas (seafood @ meat and just seafood), and cava (sparkling white wine) sangria. Croquettes were a little too soft for my taste. But flavor was there and good. Paellas was flavorful!! I can't say I had a favorite between the two. There definitely is a difference. I read a review here about the paellas being just salty. My friend and I didn't get that opinion. Well, I didn't at first but when I started getting full, i could tell I was drinking a lot of water for the saltiness. We also had taken a cooking class the day before and made the paella with the traditional burnt bottom. Oh my goodness, that burnt bottom is delicious. But unfortunately these paellas didn't have much of a burnt bottom at all. They put the paellas on another table and serve it to you on a plate. This was a special dinner to celebrate our the newlyweds who joined us for dinner and as a "last night in BCN", we knew it had to be a special place. All the arrows point to making this a special dinner with reservations. We dined here at 7:30 on a Sunday night in October when there are no outside tables, and were seated immediately. White table cloth embossed with 7 Portes logo and huge tulle drum chandeliers fill the space. We started off with the Rose cava, red wine, 2 top paellas, and finished off with 7 different desserts was an experience. If you have great friends and family, the food is just background noise. Est. 1836, these are the kind of old school restaurants that I love the vibe of. Usually these kind of establishments are staffed with knowledgeable waiters and this is true of 7 Portes. Lined around the walls are framed Manila papers scribbled with messages and signatures of famous people who have dined there. From Picasso to Che Guevara to Pelé... that was pretty cool. We got three paellas to share with 7 people. We got the Squid Ink Rice, Parellada Paella, and the Vegetable and Meat Paella. The Squid Ink was the best, and the other two was hard to distinguish in flavor as they seemed like one in the same. I had better paella while in Barcelona, but this was still good. The restaurant is quite big, with several sections. Although they could not seat us all together in the same area, they were able to accommodate us on short notice. I sat at a table for 4 and we ordered three to share: Paradella, Manolete, and Squid Ink Paella. The portion size was huge and it was way more than we could finish. They were all ok, but the Manolete and Paradella were quite a bit better than the Squid Ink paella. Maybe this is how authentic paella is supposed to taste. The restaurant itself is very modern. The menu's very tourist friendly and staff spoke very good English. Paella Parellada = Chicken, Pork Loin, Squid, Catalan Sausage, King Prawn, Mussels, 1/2 Lobster Tail. The paella of course has very strong seafood smell and taste. Rice isn't too soft, which's good. The sausage's delicious, a bit herby. The sauce is definitely on the saltier end, but it was good. The lobster was perfect - it's a tad bit crunchy outside but still so moist on the inside. Overall, the paella's pretty good. Sodium overload, but def worth trying lol. It's definitely a bit overrated I'd say. This is a very classy restaurant. Formal, even for lunch. Classy casual is fine- you won't feel out of place. Every booth and corner table has a plaque noting what famous person ate at your table -- lucky me, mine was John Wayne! The food - pretty good, but pricey. I've never been a huge paella fan, but figured I needed to have it at least once in Spain. This restaurant was within easy walking distance of my Airbnb place, and it had local recommendations for paella; so I decided to check it out. Glad I stopped in. This is a classic restaurant style restaurant. Founded in 1836 they know how to create an experience. Four of us went and I must admit I was a bit skeptical about it. It did not disappoint. Service, though a bit delayed, was excellent. Sebastian, our waiter though a bit of a curmudgeon, was extremely knowledgeable and by the end of the nearly three hour meal he shook our hands and thanked us warmly for coming. Now the food. We stayers with Gazpacho with langoustines. It was delicious with the langoustines perfectly tender. Tuna tartar though some of preferred a bit more salt was very good. Monkfish soup was delicious. Had both the traditional paella and the seafood version. Both were devoured. The rice al dente and creamy with a rich texture. Finished with the Catalan crème brûlée (a little grainy) but we are particular about our crème brûlée. The pear tarte tartin was delicious. The wine pairing was a Piorat La Conreria d'Scala Dei Burgeres 2022 which paired nicely with the seafood. We did not order it but saw the Salt Bake Sea Bass come out. Quite a serving spectacle and sure was tasty. Overall, would go back, as long as we could sit in the Picasso seat and be served by Sebastian again! The Lobster was fishy and almost tasted spoiled. The cod was extremely fishy smelling and again tasted off. The paella was almost inedible. The bread was wet and soggy, as well as the grilled vegetables. The vegetables were basically pulverized and mush. The olives they served us tasted old, Dry and spoiled. This was our last restaurant we had the chance to try. My boyfriend really wanted a meat paella, which is so difficult to find. We were told to come here. The food wasn't bad but the service was so slow and we found it weird that the piano player would only play 1 song, take a break, and play another. The ambiance has so much potential, but it kind of broke it up and it was too lit for my liking. We have very high expectations for a meat paella because the last time we were in Barcelona we stumbled across a really good find and have been in search for it ever since. I'm a college student who went to Barcelona with 5 other students. We came to 7 Portes on our last night. It is definitely worth the trip for the paella and the look of the restaurant. The vegetable starters (salads and roasted vegetables) were probably my favorite selections of the meal. The rest of the entrees were so-so. Our service was fine but not great - the waiter started taking our order then disappeared partway through because of technical difficulties with their tablets - probably best to use paper, even today! The wine selection was totally affordable for a group of college students. This was definitely the most expensive meal of our trip (keep in mind, only 60$ when split across our party) Of course, they charge for bottled water- that is the norm. This was the only place I went to that also charged for bread, and a pretty steep charge for the size of our party. If you are going to come here, stop by a local market for a loaf of bread and eat it on your way. We went here during our trip to Barcelona as it was recommend by our tour guide for it's Paella. It is a fancier space, great for a romantic dinner. The food was really good and the staff were attentive. They also had a pianist, which was nice. We got the prime rib, lamb, and an order of paella to share (3of us ). We could have done without the lamb, it was over cooked and shriveled. However the prime rib was tasty, lacked on seasoning though. The saving grace was the Paella. YUM!!! Oh my! One word: fideua (fee-deh-oo-wah). My sister and I were in Barcelona on holiday and had experienced a few paella places before we headed here. Our guide book recommended that people who like paella should try fideua and this place had a reputation so we decided to try it. We also ordered a salad and skewers with monkfish, salmon, and langoustines. The salad was just lettuce, radishes, and tomatoes and it came plain and we were told to choose one of the many olive oils in the little caddy on the table to dress it ourselves. We'd tried all of the oils by dipping in our bread and decided to choose the most vibrant green oil, which was the fruitiest. We added it to the salad along with some salt and pepper and it was crazy delicious. We chose the skewers because both of us love monkfish but the langoustines were the star of the dish. It was our first time trying langoustine (and since langoustine is French for lobster, I didn't know it was a totally different creature). Though they look deceptively like shrimp, they're much more delicate, tender, and flavorful. The skewers came with some really thick pasta strips that were dressed in just olive oil - again, amazing because of the olive oil. The fideua was crazy! It looked like a pile of little matchsticks peppered with pieces of calamari and it was amazing. The flavors were insane - how can you not love saffron? The texture of the noodles was amazing and the calamari was so good. For dessert we got profiteroles which were filled with light, sweet, whipped cream and we were given a little gravy boat filled with chocolate sauce (chocolate sauce boat?) and got to drizzle our own dessert. The sauce was made with dark chocolate so it wasn't overly sweet and it was really decadent. Service was amazing too. The waiters were really tolerant of our touristy broken Spanish and actually seemed to enjoy giving us olive oil lessons. We had a few bites at Can Paixano around the corner and b/c it was so crowded, we decided to look around for a restaurant that served paella. Mistake #1! We should've just feasted to our stomachs content at Paixano. We asked the owner(?) and other bar patrons for suggestions on where to go, and they really couldn't come up with any! Do locals not eat paella? Well the owner ended up suggesting this place b/c he didn't know of another, which really should've been the first clue to not go. Ignorant/stubborn tourists we are, we decided to grab a table seated outside (Mistake #2). We ordered a cannelloni, truffle ravioli, "rich man's" paella, and held off on ordering the profiteroles until after we ate. Oh my goodness... so many things wrong, where to start? -There was absolutely NO truffle flavor in the ravioli, good thing we didn't order the truffle cannelloni -The paella was soooo salty and the sparse seafood was all super overcooked/mushy -We got charged for "pa" and when we asked what the charge was, they then took it off... Shady! Btw, "pa" was the bread, that's put at the table when you're seated. -On the way to the bathroom, my gf overheard another table's waiter ask "how was your paella?" the response was "this was terrible"! The restaurant is beautiful and very busy. It was great having a place in BCN that would accommodate a group of 9. They offer menus in English, good bread, excellent olive oil. Once dinner service began, things went downhill quickly. The gentleman who brought our drinks was so nice and accommodating, the server who took our food order was clearly having a very bad day. Not only was he rude, but even after making it thoroughly clear he wouldn't attempt to meet me halfway in English, my Spanish speaking companion took over. I had the Lobster soup with monkfish as a first course and the lamb chops as a second. The lobster and monkfish soup was presented cold and to my surprise my lamb chops dropped on the table at the same time. It was a CRIME against lamb, not to mention barely "chops". The server was pushy and rude, dropped a stack of plates in front of our table and left them. No apologies and no attempt to be polite. I was a little bit afraid of this place after reading the reviews, but a friend who is from Spain recommended it as one of his favourites, so we decided to give it a try. I have to note that we were there early in the afternoon, just when it opened, so maybe those visiting at later points in the day will have a completely different type of experience. The interior is really elegant as well as all the waiters/servers, and the place has a really nice atmosphere. However, if I had known that their AC is so strong I probably would have brought a scarf with me, it was a little bit chilly inside. We got some bread and olives as starters - to my surprise, these weren't complimentary, which would indeed have been nicer. Then we ordered a summer tapas plate - everything on it was amazing and the portions were really generous. We also ordered one paella for the two of us to share (it was absolutely enough as we had already had the tapas), and I must say this was one of the very best I have ever tried. All this, two soft drinks and a bottle of water cost 65 Euros with tips included - I must say it was worth every cent. The portions are healthy and the taste is superb. Black squid ink paella is a must. So is the fideua with alioli. In fact, use the alioli on everything. It just goes well with all the paella. I'm sitting here back at home still thinking about the fideua. I'd try to learn how to make it, but I don't want to ruin my lasting impression of how good it can be thanks to 7 Portes. Although the menu has been upgraded over the years to reflect the languages of its many global visitors, this 4x visitor loves that how consistent their food, service, and quality is at every meal. From greetings at the door by tuxedoed staff...service personnel in crisp white uniforms...wonderful dark wood touches along the banquettes and name plates of famous visitors, 7 Portes echoes days of sophistication and glamour in dining. Wine options are terrific but of you're intimidated by the selection their house wines are lovely options at a nice price point for half or full bottle sizes. Salads are fresh and not overly large in portion-sizes -- but it never hurts to have parties large enough to share and sample a variety of dishes. Seafood options -- sampler plates or smaller servings of mussels, oysters, prawns, langoustine -- abound, but I visit for the paella. From the "rich man's" version (meats and seafood) to more specialized squid ink versions, all are flavorful, beautifully presented, and consistent year over year and visit after visit. Due to its location, menu translated into 7 languages, and not to mention paellas that are reviewed well, "Set Portes" is bounding with tourists, but that doesn't mean they serve tired fun-of-the-mill food. Yes, reservations are recommended, or else you can stand on a line for half an hour. We tried the paella parellada (21.90€), cassoleta de muscles al vapor (10.60€), crèma catalana (6.70€). I haven't had many paellas to compare theirs against, but the serving was yummy and proportionate for two people (though I would've wanted more seafood in it). I'm not familiar with local dining customs, but they billed us 2.40€ per person for the bread that they automatically gave us for starters... seems like a lot for bread. read more

After she ate, I noticed the bones looked very distinctive, as well. We asked the waiter about it when he came to clear the tables. "You said this was snapper? This doesn't look like any snapper we've ever seen." "Oh, haha, I don't know, my boss says it's snapper so it's snapper." Then, visibly nervous, he dropped our utensils. Whatever. I'd have let it go except as we walked away, it occurred to me to check the line item on the receipt. "Peix dia turbot". Dark grey, speckled skin, unusual skeleton. It was absolutely a piece of turbot. The server had to know it wasn't snapper to draw up the bill. Hello. I just dined at 7 Portes tonight for dinner. I recommend you avoid this place at all cost. If you are having second thoughts about this place, good. You should dine elsewhere. This place is definitely a tourists location (i am one of them) and locals definitely do not come here. They definitely skimp on a lot of stuff such as the Paella Manolete dish (two shrimps - actually it was one shrimp cut in half, one mini sausage, two mussels, tons of chickens here and there - thats it) and still charge 22 euros? Couldnt taste any truffels on the Festival Truffed Canneloni dish either. Way too salty and overpriced. I am sure there are better Mediterranean / Seafood / Paella places than 7 Portes. But I've heard La Fonda del port Olimpic has great Paella at a reasonable price. If you decide to come to this place, great. I highly suggest you make a reservation in advanced. Just dont come with high expectations and be prepared to open your wallet. PS. The service / waitstaff arent as friendly as other restaurants in Barcelona. Like all of you, I looked up this place on Yelp before my family and i went. I tried to set up a reservation by calling ahed of time. The man I spoke with told me there was no reservations because they were fully booked. He said it would be a 30-45 minute wait. We decided to go anyways because we wanted to try paella for the first time in the best restaurant we could find. When we arrived, we expected to see a full outer/inner dinning area, there wasn't anyone outside and only a few tables were taken inside. Our 30-45 minute wait was only seconds, which was not too shabby. I just don't appreciate being told one thing and arriving to find the complete opposite is the case. After being seated at a white linen table by a man in a tuxedo and looking around, we quickly felt like we were under dressed. All the servers were wearing tuxedos and the place felt very formal, however the other patrons had shorts and t-shirts on just like us. My girlfriend and I wanted to split an order of (fish only) Rich man's Paella. Which is enough for two people. If your really hungry, you mite be able to handle the whole thing by yourself. It was very delicious and full of flavor. It had 1 VERY SMALL piece of lobster tail and a lot of squid, clams, and mussels. I thought for being called "Rich Man's Paella" and being served by waiters in tuxedos, there would be a little more shellfish. However, that was not the case. Was recommended this restaurant by a friend who lived in Barcelona for 20+ years as the best place for paella in town. The food was good, yet the service was poor and that is generous statement. The server brought us the wrong wine, wrong vodka drink, and wrong paella meal. He was not attentive at all. We had to ask for everything and then received a sigh or some facial expression as though we were inconveniencing him. We didn't want to have them redo our paella as paella takes a long time to make which meant the other 8 people would have wanted to wait to eat their meal. That was not practical.
