But the cooks are so slow you sit at your table for hours waiting around for the dishes to arrive on paper plates. This is one of our favorite local date night places. The staff are wonderful- sometimes service is a little slow, but that has never bothered us because it's usually just one cook and one server, so they're going as fast as they can. Wowwwww. This place looks so unassuming but we just had one of the best meals we've had in a long time. We got 3 small plates and 2 mains and it was the perfect amount for 2 hungry people. There was just one server and the chef but service was great. I didn't bring my phone to dinner so I'm not sure what the proper names of the dishes are but we got duck fat edamame, fried shrimp, eggplant marinated in Japanese mustard, fried chicken with radishes and chicken teriyaki dishes and ate every bite. We live in the neighborhood and will probably go back next week. Super reasonable pricing WHAT A GEM! read more

I walked in this evening not planning to buy cooked food, just some noodles and sesame oil. I saw that they had squid balls on their kitchen menu. I ordered them just expecting some fried seafood balls, but what i got was a beautiful surprise. Lightly fried balls of dough with huge chunks of squid resting on a bed of what I think was tuna flakes, ginger and shredded carrots. There was also a tangy brown sauce in the mix. A hole in the wall Japanese diner. Very creative dishes and they have raw chicken sashimi, a true delicacy, for the brave znd adventurous souls although they seared it slightly for us. Surprisingly this place offers some good sake selection. It could get crowded easily because it is a small place and they do t take reservation. I came to NY to discover new and exciting things, and this was anything but. The food was decent, but not worthy of the un-diner like price of $60 per person. The food was over salted and all of the meats were treated in the same manner. Perhaps we caught the chef on an "off" night? The server didn't seem particularly familiar with the menu or the general practices of the restaurant, and as for the super casual atmosphere? Everything is served off of and on paper plates. This practice, while easy on the kitchen, is horrible for the planet and is by no means "cute" or "rustic." It is tacky at best and environmentally harmful at worst. I am unimpressed. read more

A great space and nice idea. The food's not bad for fusion tapas, even though it takes quite a bit of time. The larger issue I've experienced is inconsistent treatment. I wanted to try takeout one early evening, ~6pm. There were two people in the diner, and a friend said he often gets takeout here, so I thought, 'Treat yoself'. The hostess greeted me politely, I made my intentions known, and then she asked the chef, who shook his head and said 'No takeout.' Hmn. I said oh, sorry, I guess you don't do that anymore! And calmly went on my way, got delivery from Eastwick. The experience felt too weird, though, so I asked my friend about it, and he confirmed that he still gets takeout often from here. So this place probably deserves somewhere between 3 to 4 stars. Let me start off by saying we got some kind of shrimp dish, fried chicken, steak and asparagus. They are small dishes, like tapas, my complaint is that the dishes are not strong individual dishes even if you want them to be that. And the practical thing to do is serve them side by side so people can pick at them however they want to. Maybe not all at once but the asparagus and a meat dish and serve the shrimp separately. That was not the case last night. First they brought out the asparagus then the fried chicken and as we were eating the shrimp (on a cucumber) was brought out. So we got to taste the shrimp and chicken together if we chose to and that didn't go well together. I guess I was looking for a certain thought and care into the presentation of the dishes depending on their tastes. The last dish was the steak which I would have Loved to eat with the asparagus. It was okay, not great - little pieces that looked like under cooked bacon. Second - the aesthetic of the restaurant is pretty cool - I felt like I was in some sort of painting. When I went to go to the bathroom someone had to point out that I needed to push a "wall" which was actually a door but there was no sign on it at all. I wonder how many times he has to direct people when they want to go to the bathroom. I suggest putting an elegant sign on that door because it just makes sense. What if it's a crowded night and you can't keep a lookout trying to direct everyone where to go? Overall the food selections that night (apparently the menu changes) were okay - (my favorite was the fried chicken- yum) take care in the presentation more because the dishes separately are just that and not as fun of an experience for my taste buds. I think the food by a young Japanese chef is incredibly ambitious and utterly delicious. They change the menu every day based on what they find at the local markets. Many of the dishes have an italian accent but done in a japanese way. A plate of enoki mushrooms was treated as if they were delicate strands of pasta and were tossed in butter and parmesan cheese with a lot of pepper. The raw tuna and avocado salad was tossed with crunchy seaweed and wasabi. It's a small staff so you may not get the attention you would get from a bigger restaurant but they were incredibly friendly and the prices are very reasonable. I would quibble with the lighting which is a bit bright but I will definitely be back. read more

Hands down the best restaurant in the area and one of the best restaurants I've been to in NYC. I had the pork buns, the catch of the day, fried chicken and the duck confit.
