Ever been on a blind date and when you meet you discovered she (in my case) was very unassuming? Then as the date progressed, you discovered that she was very interesting and a lot of fun. At the end of the date, she planted a kiss on you that you remember to this day. That was my experience at 7th Street Sandwich Shop. The website could use a facelift. The location looked ok. (They're going for a surfer theme.) There is plenty of free parking. There was certainly enough seating on a Saturday at 12:00. That was the unassuming part. I ordered an open faced reuben, my wife ordered a BLT, and my son ordered a turkey sandwich. We all really enjoyed our sandwiches. The breads tasted homemade and the meats were really lean. The sandwiches were the right size and had a nice balance of flavors. To sample the menu a little more, we also got hushpuppies and chocolate chip cookie bites. The hushpuppies were sweet and actually reminded me of homemade donut holes. The chocolate chip cookie bites were tasty and sweet. That date was worth every penny. Everything we got made us wish they were open on Sundays. Still, that just guarantees that we'll be back next Saturday. No waiting 3 days to call this blind date back! I decided to come to this sandwich shop based entirely on Yelp reviews, so I feel let down. I really wanted to love it, and I came with the expectation that my review would echo the accolades I've otherwise noted here. To start... It was a little hard to find because there is no sign on the building. The window has a painted sign though, along with a hand made sign on a piece of poster board with magic marker advertising they cater. Inside... The array of tables and booths seemed discombobulated. The register area was cluttered and had some hand written signs for this or that. There is an odd sort of bar area that appeared to be a work area? It needed a good cleaning. I ordered the "onion leashes" (onion straws, more like onion bits as it turns out). I then ordered the Banzai vegetarian sandwich, boasting three types of cheese with lettuce and tomato. Dining... I found a table - the booths all looked like they really wanted a thorough wiping with a strong disinfectant - and before I knew it the food was ready and delivered to the table. The server brought it in a cardboard box top that had definitely been used many times before. The "onion leashes" were tasty and crisp, the dipping sauce was also tasty. My sandwich looked promising, but failed to deliver. The cheese slices look like they had to be unwrapped individually to put on the bread, but there was a healthy dose of them. The tomatoes and lettuce were firm and good but swimming in mayo and mustard. As I sat there I noticed the floor...it really really needs a strong sweeping and industrial mopping. I hate that my visit didn't turn out. I hoped I'd discovered another awesome place in Frederick. But, on the bright side: their prices are very good. It has a nice beach theme in the inside and you feel instantly relaxed when you walk in. The bread is made fresh daily and you can get sandwiches, subs and even burgers with their own spin. A large menu with creative offerings and MULTIPLE vegetarian options (major brownie points). Big portions. Friendly staff. 7th street just hits off all the yeses. I got the veggie club, minus the gratuitous third slice of bread, and it was really great. Cheesy, savory, crisp and fresh with a variety of veggies. Mmm so good. Anddd they wrap up your sandwich with a cookie surprise, which is so super delightful and it's little touches like that which really set a place apart from the rest. We ordered monster fries too, and omfg. A huge serving of fries, caramelized onions and super crispy onion petals with delectable 'soviet' sauce. So fkn good. And beer. $3.50. THREE FIDDY. for a watermelon gose. Unheard of in DC. Maybe this is the norm in Frederick, but when you get used to bending over and taking beer prices up the butt in DC, finding a beer that isn't a PBR that is priced under $4 is nothing shy of magical. We would come here so regularly if we lived closer. And who knows, we might even drive out of the way for another stop here the next time we are close-ish. read more

Loved it! We really like fresh sandwiches. They are not at all preppy or snobby. They make sandwiches that are outstanding, and generously sized on delicious home made bread. We should mention that the bread was soft and well made, but it had a dense crust (bread machine style). I liked it, but my wife prefers a softer crust unless its sourdough or crunchy European style. The ingredients are fresh and well balanced. The service was friendly and prompt. The prices are very reasonable. I am a big fan of Reuben sandwiches, I had their open faced Reuben and I can say that it was one of the best I've ever had. To compare it to another MD spot, Corned Beef King, I would say that this place has them beat solidly. The portion here is not as big as at the CBK in Olney, but the combination of flavors is top notch here and the price is much better. They make their own Russian dressing and call it Soviet Sauce. My wife had the Old Orchard (turkey, and cranberry) and subbed sprouts for the lettuce. It's an old favorite that was just what she was hoping for. The hush puppies (though they do not seem home made) were crispy and delicious. A great corn taste, with natural sweetness. The fries were good. Both of these sides were only 1.95 for a reasonable single portion. Finally we tried their mini choc chip cookies (home made): sooo good!! Definitely our new GO TO Sandwich shop! A real Frederick hidden gem! Location issue: It looks like they are working on renovation or updating but they definitely need better signage out front. The sign on the strip mall says carry out. I had the 7th St steak and cheese which was huge and came on a fresh Italian roll. My husband got the special NY Hot Pastrami and said it was one of the best pastrami sandwiches he's had in the area. The cute little cookie was a nice surprise. Himalayan sea salt and malt vinegar for the fries were great. We also ordered fries and a drink and it came to $26 which wasn't bad considering how much food we ordered. Good prices! I love the beach theme but they are still working on the decor and painting. I love that they have a reminder about considering the environment and ditch using straws, great message! The tea tasted funny (didn't taste like Gold Peak) and they were out of Sprite, so they lost a star for me. We went on a Saturday afternoon where there were only two other tables seated. A little more attention to the beverage station and keeping the seating areas a little cleaner would be appreciated. I'll definitely be back though! read more

I may not like their specialty sauces but that's ok. The rest is AMAZING! Haven't had anything else that I haven't liked. They are also great on fixing any issues from special order requests that don't quite get done right... which is fantastic. This place may not be for everyone but everyone should try this place. If you're not sure about the sauce ask for it on the side. Again, if it's the only thing that's a no for you then you should really love the rest. The cookies... yummy btw. And hush puppies... I'm awaiting when sell their boneless wings as a platter/meal but for now... on the cheese fries I'll suffer. I think I ordered and they made the french fries right then because when I got them they were cold Dash a bummer. I got the Greek salad as well it was good. Met a friend for lunch and suggested that we hop over to Subway. Fortunately, he suggested something better, right up the sidewalk in the same shopping center...the 7th Street Sandwich Shop. It's not very well marked and doesn't even have a big sign like all the other stores in the center do, but that's okay...if the focus is on the freshest daily-made bread and large quantities of delicious sandwich fillings, I'm okay with that! Day one, got a pizza steak on what seemed to be a ciabatta sub roll...knocked my socks off, it was so good, filling and tasty. Two days later, I took my wife and she raved about the turkey, cranberry and herb mayo on whole grain...said it was one of the BEST sandwiches she'd ever had. With my cuban that day, who was I to disagree with her? While I'd love to see it properly advertised and lit up with a nice sign, I'd like it to stay under the radar just a little while longer. At least the fries were good! I tried this place because of the reviews on google maps. It was the closest to me with the most and best reviews. I do not frequent this area and thought I would give it a try. When walked in I was not greeted or acknowledged. I had to find the menu as it is not clearly posted. You will however find it in a small basket across from the main register. I was able to place my order quickly and asked where the restrooms were located. The bathroom was relatively clean but had an off odor. I received my food about 8 minutes after ordering. The fries were hot and reminded me of five guys fries. The BLT I ordered was not. Toasted bread can and should still be somewhat soft. This was not the case. It was hard and did not have a pleasant taste. There was way too much bacon and only one tomato and two pieces of lettuce. A giant globe of mayo was the final straw. Not sure if I just came at the wrong time or if i ordered the wrong sandwich but it was a fail for me. read more

I wanted to get a good sandwich from another Frederick area spot I love, but when I realized they were closed, I Yelped around for a suitable replacement. That took me to 7th Street Sandwich Shop. It was our first visit and the food did not disappoint. It was easy to order at the counter and pick a seat from one of the many open tables. It wasn't long at all before our food was brought to the table. It wasn't busy at all, so perhaps it's not always that fast. The kids each got The Dog (basic hot dog in a homemade bun) and there were no complaints from the picky little girls. *Note- hot dogs were only on one of the two menus we were perusing. My wife had The Backside. It in was roast beef, turkey, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and horseradish sauce on wheat. One bite and she was impressed. I had the Cowabunga (turkey, muenster, sprouts, garden veggies, tomato, cucumbers, artichoke hearts, peppers, and pesto). It was fantastic! Soft, fresh bread filled with tasty, textured ingredients. We also shared a half size of onion leashes. It came with a tasty sauce reminiscent of Bloomin' Onion sauce. The food and service we're great all around. I had to subtract one star due to a less than stellar cleanliness factor. Some tables were sticky and in need of a good wipe down. A few doors down is a Subway and I have no idea why anyone would eat there with this place in existence. 7th Street is the opposite of Subway: nice staff, big menu, awesome food (no plastic in the homemade bread, unlike Subway). You can even order online and the food is ready on-time, every time. The Godfather is SO damn good! The amount of meat in a couple of their sandwiches (namely, the roast beef) can be a little small, but that's about the only con I can think of. I had heard good things about this joint and decided to order some lunch. Ordered ahead, took about twenty minutes. I had the Bonzai, which was very tasty. The "surfin sauce" is a nice compliment, bread had a nice texture. Coulda used a couple more slices of cheese for my liking, but for the price it was fair. Seems like a cool place to hang out and grab a bite, has a very relaxed atmosphere. Service was very attentive and friendly. I recommend it for sure! read more

I was looking for a quick bite in Fredrick and decided on this place based on Yelp reviews. It definitely didn't disappoint! It's a small shop so it's easy to miss. The menu is huge! I honestly don't think there's a bad item on the menu. I went with the R&R club and it was absolutely fantastic! The sandwich was HUGE. There were layers of meat and it was easily enough for two meals. It was extremely flavorful and unique and it was more than worth the price. Ordered the steak and cheese, the steak was 1,000 degrees (not sure if it was microwaved or not but it's scorching hot and not consistent throughout), flour on the bread gets all over your hands and doesn't taste great. Fries tasted like old oil. No ice in the fountain machine. No straws. Ketchup kept behind the counter. Boxes were everywhere behind the counter so it just looked a messed. 7th Street Sandwich Shop is quickly becomming our family's go to place. Like many of the other reviewers, we drove past it without noticing becuase the signage is not very big (its tucked in the Safeway shopping plaza on 7th street between the CVS and the Pack N' Ship, under the sign that says "carry out"). The theme is beachy from the menu to the decor to the music and the staff is super nice. The atmoshpere is very laid back and my 5 year-old found it to be very kid friendly (especially the homemade cookies tucked into the wrapping paper of their hotdog!). Have I mentioned the prices yet? Extremely reasonable for such fresh food! During our last visit, I was told that they're working on a seperate kids menu but their current menu is packed with tons of kid friendly options: grilled cheese, hot dogs, veggies w/ ranch dip and chicken fingers (breaded in house!). My daughter recommends the hot dog, it was "grilled to perfection". I'm a huge fan of the "Brian's" salad, they don't skimp on the toppings and the cucumbers have a very light brine to them so they add a tang to balance the salty feta and the earthy beets. Also, the feta is left in a chunk and not crumbled so it doesn't overpower the other flavors. It really is well done. Another bonus, they now carry beer. If you're like me and love to have an amazing sandwich and a cold beer after a long day working in the yard and your dining options are limited by a picky younger palate...THIS IS YOUR PLACE! read more

I ate here a couple times recently while we were at FMH. The first time I tried the Godfather (Italian) at the recomendation of an employee. The bread was too soft/characterless for my taste and the sub didn't have the bite or flavor that you would hope for. It very much felt like something you could make at home with little effort. We came back a couple days later; this time I tried the Johny Utah and my wife had the Cowbunga. Mine was disappointing, similar to my first experience. My wife's sandwhich was good, but not great. Wow.what a HUGE disappointment. This was our first and last visit. Called in the order for 2 salads and their famous hand cut fries. Was told the order would be ready in 30 minutes. So, we waited, months watering. 30 minutes later, hubby rolls out with the scrawniest salads we've seen in quite a while - more the size of a house side salad. No uten6with which to eat these puny salads. And the French fries. Wow. Yeah, NO. 1/4 bag full of the coldest, non salted pitiful fries I've ever paid for. Went for a late lunch with my daughter on a Thursday afternoon. She had heard good things about the sandwiches and the food there so she suggested we try it. She was right on the button with this place. The 7th Street Sandwich Shop is located in the 7th Street Shopping Center right next to CVS. Kate ordered The Godfather Long Board sub. Ham, pepperoni, hard salami, capicola, provolone, sweet red peppers, olives and vinaigrette. Thus The Godfather. I chose the Which Came First Dr.Seuss Club Sandwich. Grilled Cajun spiced chicken, fried egg, bacon, pepper jack cheese and Cajun tartar sauce on toasted white bread. We also order fried green tomatoes to share. Both sandwiches turned out to be gigantic. Not just gigantic but delicious. Kates sub was full of fresh cut meats and cheeses on a fantastic submarine bread that they call long boards. My club sandwich was spicy and delicious. A great combination. And the bread was incredible too. We enjoyed the fried green tomatoes but not nearly as much is our sandwiches. As many other reviewers have noted, this shop is located in the Safeway shopping center on the uphill side of the L, at the uppermost end of the L from Safeway, at the end nearest to 7th St.. I will also note that the map on the Yelp page for this shop incorrectly shows it as being located on the opposite side of 7th St., and farther west than it really is. I discovered this place only early yesterday morning, entirely by accident, when I visited Yelp and stumbled upon a new review for this shop. I am normally not much of a fan of sandwich shops, but in this case of the review that I stumbled upon, there was something about it that was so glowing that I clicked through to the Yelp listing for the shop, whereupon I read a number of the other glowing reviews for this place as well. After reading just a few of the reviews, I realized that this place was quite special, and I promised myself that the next time I visited Frederick (I live in the mountains outside of Frederick, and it is about a 25 minute drive to get to this part of the city) I would definitely visit this shop and check out some of their offerings. Well, my opportunity to visit the shop came later that same day, as I needed to visit Frederick to run some errands, and I ended up getting to the shop at about 1 PM. I found the shop still quite busy with a sizeable lunch crowd, and despite the fact that the line for ordering had about five people in it, the line moved very quickly and in no time at all I found myself at the register placing my order. Since I live so far away, and because I was already convinced that their food would be excellent,I decided to order several items to bring back home to try, and so I ordered sufficient food to ensure that there would still be food left over to put in the fridge for future meals. I ordered the fish and chips, and a couple of the short board fried fish sandwiches, and also the FGT Bacon (fried green tomato) short board sandwich on which I asked them to add a fried egg as well. When I got the food home, I tried each of the items, and everything was wonderful. The fried cod fish pieces in the fish and chips dish are quite sizeable, and the batter is quite good. The homemade Cajun tartar sauce was very good. The fish sandwich was downright amazing, and despite the fact that it was a short board sandwich, the size of the sandwich, and the size of the fried fish patty inside it, was extremely generous. One of the things that amazed me about each of the items that I had ordered was the fact that the serving sizes were very generous, and the amount of food that you get for the quite-inexpensive price for each item is quite amazing. The food is downright sumptuous, and the largely-organic menu offerings -- on the very extensive menu -- are very broad and creative, akin to the kind of menu selections that you might expect to find only in a restaurant operated by a famous chef in the French Quarter of New Orleans.. Best, all of their breads and rolls are made at the shop, and are very good. I was pleasantly surprised to notice that each of the employees, all of whom seemed to be college-aged, seemed to be very happy and friendly, and helpful. This level of happiness and friendliness is quite rare to find in the staffers of most shops nowadays, and I can only surmise that the employees at this shop must genuinely love working at the shop, and I can also guess that they were well-trained. BTW, the interior of the shop has a number of tables and chairs, and is very well lighted, and is nicely decorated with light colors, along the lines of a shop that would be found on the boardwalk near a surfing beach on the US West coast. So, the bottom line is that I became aware of the existence of this place entirely by accident thanks to Yelp, and the shop turned out to be quite amazing in every way. I will definitely return! All of the food was delicious. In closing, I have only ONE COMPLAINT about this restaurant: The VERY sad reality is that they do NOT offer any brain dishes on their otherwise very extensive and highly creative menu: no brain sandwiches, no brain fritters, no brain tacos, no brain curry, no brain-and-egg omelettes, no pasta with brains in red sauce, no brain dishes at all. So, no pig brains, no calf brains, no goat brains, no sheep brains, no beef brains. Therefore, if you need to eat brains on a regular basis, as do I, then you cannot afford to eat solely at this place, as you would soon die of a dietary brain deficiency, and rather, you will need to go elsewhere for brains. Fortunately, several butcher shops and some Latino groceries in Frederick County sell frozen beef brains and frozen pig brains (and also tripe... yummy!), and you can stock up on frozen brains (and tripe, don't forget the tripe!) at one of these shops and then cook it up to your heart's content at home to eat with plenty of hot sauce. read more
