Hero's quite frankly may be a hidden treasure in Frederick. First let me start with their bread...baby the bread is it!! Even when I shouldn't be eating carbs, I will get their bread because it tastes like someone's Nona made it. The food is flavorful and the portions are always great. My go to dish is the sausage and peppers with penne pasta and a side house salad with the lemon vinegarette dressing. The sausage has some dimensions to it and the pasta sauce is rich and robust- both pair perfectly with the al dente pasta. I also like that you can get pizza by the slice- that's not common here in Frederick. The house salad too is always fresh and loaded with a variety of veggies as if it came straight out of someones garden! read more

Had lunch at Hero's today and very disappointed. First the setup of the restaurant was confusing. No sign to direct the dinner to wait or be seated. We had find a person who directed us to a booth. i live a mile from heros and did not venture inside until 2 months ago, for lunch. There is an outstanding lunch buffet, modest in size and perfect in cooking style and assortment. All the food is created and cooked by the kitchen. Soup is so tasty and seasoned.. Meatballs are dressed with their marinara sauce. There was chicken marsala and yellow rice.. Stopped by for a quick lunch. It wasn't busy when I went but they had only been open for about an hour. Pretty spacious indoor seating complete with a small bar area. The service was very friendly and pretty quick. The Meatballs Fra Diavolo appetizer was amazing! A great portion of homemade meatballs with a nice marina topped with cheese. Would highly recommend them for an appetizer. The pizza was good as well, I prefer mine cooked a bit longer but that is just preference. It's a pretty thin Ny Style dough. Hero's is really one of Frederick's Best kept secrets! My husband and I were looking for somewhere to have lunch and we were in the area where the Weis shopping center is on Thomas Johnson Drive and we drove around the shopping center looking at all the options Roy Roger's, some other chicken place, Subway and then we saw Hero's Pizza, Subs, salads and more. I really like supporting small businesses so we decided to try it. When we first walked in we noticed how Very Clean and Cozy it was and we were greeted by a very sweet young lady. We looked at their Buffet and decided that we would have that for our lunch every thing was delicious they had Pizza, a Wonderful Salad, and OMG the Pasta's they had a Ravioli and Chicken Alfredo and a Jasmin rice and another dish that's so good everything was so Delicious this will definitely be our go to place when we are in the area!! read more

The sadly ordered Hawian pizza was pronounced delicious, but, again, sadly, why would anyone order that? 5. Pepproni pizza was pronounced yum. We just tried Hero's for the first time today and we will definitely be back! As we entered through the back entrance, we walked towards the front and the hostess seated us right away and there was no wait for lunch. During COVID, everyone is required to wear a mask. Our waiter, Sam, greeted us in a friendly demeanor and was very attentive. He quickly took our drink orders and was on top of everything from offering us extra napkins, plates and even drink refills. He was wonderful. Now for the food! This place has a great meatball fra diavlo, which is a spicy meatball marinara sauce. It's so delicious, a little bit of spice but enjoyable as an appetizer. It comes with 3 large meatballs with lots of sauce and covered with mozzarella cheese. We even ordered a side of the sauce to take home. Then we ordered The Milan, a cold sub with Italian ham, mortadella, Genoa salami, capicola, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, with house dressing. The bread was perfect-soft inside and crusty outside. Definitely made fresh and a good sub. The 12" sub is a very large portion. I had left overs for lunch the next day. After we ordered a large Di Angelo pizza which was a mushroom, pepperoni and sausage pizza, which was also tasty. When dining in, it's fresh out of the oven and a gooey cheese goodness with fresh mushrooms. The crust is yummy and perfect NY style. The dining room was clean, lots of space, and social distancing is enforced. I definitely recommend trying Hero's and visiting this place when coming to Frederick and you're in the mood for good and casual pizza or sub. read more

Stopped here on my way home from a business event in D.C.. Wanted something to eat but didn't want fast food and didn't want sit down. A sandwich to go seemed like the perfect option. I asked for their recommendation and they said to try the Milan. They asked if I wanted to make it a meal and I said yes. The wait wasn't horrible, but I had to ask about what was included in the "meal". What drinks, what chips, etc. I grabbed a bag of of chips and a can of soda. Had I realized the meal upgrade for those two small items was over $3, I would have taken a pass. The sandwich was pretty blah. The bread was spongy - I was expecting a nice crusty bread. I asked for a 6 inch and they gave me 12. I should have complained, but I was just hoping to get home. The worst part was the lack of flavor. How a sandwich with Italian ham, mortadella, genoa salami, capicola, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato & onions tasted blander than a bologna and cheese on sliced bread with mayo . . . is beyond me. It was really strange to eat an "Italian" sub and not get anything back in flavor. No spice, no meaty, even the provolone didn't add anything. The vegetables were fresh and abundant. The veggie/meat ratio was pretty similar to a Subway. The sandwich and "meal" cost over $17. A total rip off, to be honest. I could have had the same quality (actually probably better) at a Subway chain establishment for under $15 with a much larger drink, more toppings and options, and the same bag of chips. This is a big skip for me. Maybe their pizza has some redeeming qualities, but the sandwich and service were a bust. read more

Second Hero's Review TLDR - Sorcery! What sorcery is THIS? Hero's has pizza, pasta, and sandwiches (AKA Sammiches). Their Selvin was a magnificent morsel, and today, 08Jun2024, I tried out the Penne ala Vodka and the Cheese Pizza (the base for all other pies). Penne ala Vodka - Pasta itself was al dente, great texture, nice chewiness. In the words of Shaft, "I dig it!". Now, the sauce. Great tomato base, with only a hint of acidity. Usually, with tomato based sauce, I get the acid reflux, but as Arya Stark once said, NOT TODAY! I had no stomach issues with this sauce. Then you taste the parmesan cheese in the sauce, as you continue to chew. And lastly, the prosciutto's flavor comes out. With each chew, each bite, the flavors converge in your mouth, and all I can say is GLORIOUS! Cheese Pizza - tomato based sauce (see above). it does not overpower the flavor of the cheese. I can assume any other topping's flavour will shine as you bite into the pizza. The crust though, is splendid. There is a wonderful crunch, and saltiness that only compliments the sauce and toppings. And the crust also has that smokiness that enhances everything! In short, once again, MAGNIFICENT! Ambience - today was 90s music. And I WANT IT THAT WAY! 'nuff said. read more

How can horseradish become hot peppers? Inedible for my guests. Teens were running the shop and they should be made to sample the menu. They're clueless. Pizza still fab. This time I left a note when ordering through Grub Hub, please give me what I ordered. Asked for cheese on my spaghetti. This time I got spaghetti, no cheese on it. Also ordered chicken tenders, " with Honey Mustard". No Honey mustard. As for the food, it is great, when you get what you ordered. Everything we ordered was wrong. My husband ordered a steak sub and was given chicken parm. His food was brought to the table a good 6 minutes before mine. I ordered a veggie sub which was to have lettuce and tomato according to the menu and instead it came smothered in tomato sauce and no lettuce or tomato. Our server told me thats how it's served, although no mention of sauce on the menu. When the check came we were charged for 2 drinks we didn't order. Thin, crispy crust, just the right amount of tomato sauce, and no EXTRA CHEESE (it is the balance of crust, tomato and cheese that makes a great pizza, not just give me more, more and more). My wife and I love the red onion, green pepper and mushroom pizza. Really delicious, our go-to pizza. I always tell the staff to compliment kitchen chefs, and they are appreciative. I love the food here. However, beware! If you order from the link for order & delivery on Yelp be sure the Grub Hub driver is told to pick up the chips, drink, etc as they leave. Hero's takes no responsibility for delivery drivers omitting parts of your order and apparently there's the breakdown in customer service. We ordered 2 sandwich combos and received no part of the combo. I got no refund but they did say I could come pick it up myself. Just be sure to eat in or pick it up yourself. read more

My friend & I were in a rush to go to an event and randomly found this restaurant as we were passing by. The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. The fries were golden and perfectly crispy -- definitely recommend. I got the Eve Hero, it was delicious. It was filling and the meat/veggies were fresh. The sandwich was a good size for the price, nothing crazy about it. The cheesecake was A1. I wish it came with strawberry topping of some sortl, just as a personal preference, but other than that - it was great! If I lived closer, they would have a regular! I'm a NY'er. Born there. Raised there. Went to school there. Worked there. Those are my credentials. I'm now living in Frederick MD. I've been missing pizza since I got here about two months ago. Oh sure I've had "pizza" here...or what the locals call pizza but no it wasn't what I know as pizza. Then I saw a review on Yelp for Heros. Normally if a place only has a handful of reviews I ignore it, I assume the owners have 15 friends/relatives to leave reviews. But this time I read some of the reviews and I was intrigued, so I placed an order. I was almost brought to tears of joy. I found my pizza place. This is pizza as I know it (or darn close). If like me you are a NY ex-pat who is used to getting their slice from a corner place with a name like Carmine's, Tony's or Vinny's...this is the place you want to go. This is Frederick MD and not Brooklyn or Manhattan so keep that in mind. If I'm nit-picking, the edge crust was a little cracker-ish not chewy like the best of NY (AP flour instead of high gluten 00 maybe?). But sauce and cheese on point. No hint of corn meal or other peel lubricant on the bottom. Nice leopard spotting on the crust. Delicious!!! At some point I will go back and try some of their other foods but for now I'm just happy to have good pizza again. (Now if I could only find a proper bagel!) read more

When I arrived I had to wait for about 10 minutes before someone was able to help me with my to go pickup. First time getting pizza from Heros and I have to say, it is the closest thing to true NY style that I've had in this area since Rocky's closed. It has that nice thin crispy crust that NY style should have, the type that still lets you fold it in half (with a satisfying crunching) without flopping or splitting. The cheese to sauce ratio is really spot on, and it isn't the sweet sauce that a lot of MD pizza shops tend to use. The pizza was fantastic and I will certainly be visiting again. The service was great, with the staff even offering to run my pizza out when it was ready (as I did a walkup order for 2 pies), and obviously took pride in their work. My only complaint is that it isn't closer to home, so it was a little cool by the time I got there, I'll have to remember to bring an insulated bag next time. read more

This was a last minute decision to get pizza here but glad we did! We ordered a pepperoni pizza. The pizza tasted great. It was perfectly cooked, not too greasy, and had the perfect fold. Everyone was happy. Henry was our waiter. He was super friendly, helpful, and provided great customer service. The price of the pizza and drinks were pretty decent too. My last two visits have been disappointing. It use to remind me of the palaces I used to go to in Brooklyn. The wings where overcooked and the pizza had lost is texture and flavor. The rye bread was soft and tasted stale at best, no flavor whatsoever. The mustard was standard, nothing special. This is the specialty of the house? Wife had tuna salad, which was piled high and tasted fresh and delicious. Both got fries, they were delivered to the table cold. Waiter brought out fresh fries and they were like a 4/5. Very good.
