This is a perfect lunch spot. It's right across from the courthouse, so most of the business comes from there. It's right downtown so very walkable. It's a father/daughter combo manning this small old time feel deli. It's the type of deli you would see in a big city like New York. The daughter typically rings up the orders and the dad is cranking them out. They are QUICK. You can call ahead and place your order if you're in a rush. But even if you show up and there's a line, they are quick and efficient. I've never waited more than five minutes for my food. There are several tables to sit at. They have full coolers of ice cold drinks such as soda. A big selection of chips as well. They have home made fresh potato, chicken and shrimp salad. My husband and I use to frequent this place almost daily. Not sure what changed over the years. New management, new cooking, lazy cooking, microwave lazy cooking, or cheap cut backs or all the above. Went for breakfast since the Perfect Blend had a line out the door. This place has been there for ever and is just across the street from The Frederick Hotel. Not too fancy inside. Ordered sausage egg and cheese on a bagel. Would get it again. Lunch sandwiches looked good. My girlfriend got an iced coffee and it was good. And that's just one of at least a dozen different pre-selected sandwich combinations, or you can pick your own meats, cheese, vegetables and condiments for a custom sandwich. I know it's a deli, but I'd like it to be a bit more friendly in terms of dining in. There are no plates, trays,cups, or anything. You get a sandwich wrapped up in butcher's paper and that's it. If you'd like a drink, it's going to come from a can or bottle from the refrigerator. A small bag of chips are your standard side for a price. You can buy various kinds of macaroni salads, but there aren't many options in terms of fresh side dishes. It's very grab-and-go. And sometimes that's nice. But I wish they would put in a bit more effort to make it a comfortable dine in experience as well. But the sandwich I had was so good, that I'll definitely be back anyway. I got one of the pre-made salads (mixed greens, carrot, cabbage, tomato, and cucumber). Overall was fine except for the cucumbers. The cucumbers were slimy and translucent, definitely not what you want in a cucumber. Other then that, it was an average house salad, pretty much what you would expect from a deli. The salad did come with deli sliced cheese and chicken, which made it different from other pre-made salads (and added some needed flavor). read more

You always receive a warm greeting. The service is upbeat and friendly. You get the sense the employees love where they work. The sandwiches; whether breakfast or lunch, are prepared quickly. Stopped here for a quick sandwich while in Frederick. The inside is quite small but there is a small outside patio as well. I ordered chicken salad over sourdough. I was disappointed with the sourdough bread but the homemade chicken salad was delicious. They have a wide variety menu, with boars head deli meats, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. sadly, though, they didn't offer many veggies. They do have fountain drinks inside a small cooler. Seriously, Frederick, if this is your "Best Of", I totally understand why people call you Fredneck. Crabapples is as close to a proper deli as Carl Sagan is to being an evangelical Christian. I ordered one of their signature sandwiches, the Manusco. Roast beef, lettuce, tomato, provolone and pesto mayo on a hero roll. It should not be so easy to make this into the travesty it was. First, the lettuce was yellow and bitter. Second, the beef was so well done that it may have been a cowboy boot in a previous life. Third, no WAY was this roll fresh. The bottom half was dry and brittle as one might expect when a bread bag is left open for a couple days. The tomato was mushy and soggy, but instead of adding moisture to the sanwich, added a texture reminiscent of sand. Mayo? What mayo? Had it not been for the grease stain on the paper, there would be no evidence of mayo. For all those who are giving this place high ratings, PLEASE go to DC, Baltimore or NYC and learn what a real deli's food should be like. We saw this place ranked number 1 for Best of Frederick in the best deli and best sandwich category. We assumed this meant it was outstanding. We were disappointed. Our sandwich was, well, uninspiring. A slice of shaved chicken, some lettuce and tomato, sandwiched between two pieces of sandwich bread. Really? We could have made that at home, thanks. The soup was better, but way too salty. The prices were ridiculous. Unfortunately, there are more than three sandwich places only a couple of blocks away from this one that are so much better, cheaper and make interesting sandwiches, that I seriously doubt we'll return. I've eaten here a few times, and I've got to say that the food here at this establishment reminds me of my hometown in Brooklyn. Depending on my mood, I would usually get the BLT, XB-AC sandwich or the ovengold roasted turkey breast sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and mayo. Sometimes, I order a small cup of cole slaw or I just pick up a bag of chips and a drink. I've read a few reviews from the Yelpers that said the manager's from NY, and I'm really glad that he brought NYC to Frederick. I'm tired of eating sandwiches from Subway, never mind that Subway tries to make their sandwiches look like hero sandwiches from NYC. I almost skipped trying Crabapples due to the previous reviews, but I'm glad I didn't and so I thought I should share my experience. I picked up an Italian hero, small NY potato salad, and large mac n cheese to take home. The staff was friendly. The sandwich was huge! I disagree with the reviews complaining about the prices. My total was $10 and change after taxes. The sandwich and salad is enough for two meals, so take off $2 for the mac n cheese (which I got to try separately and is enough for a meal in itself) and that's $4 for a meal. That's less than just a sandwich at the chain places. The sandwich was very bready, as others mentioned, but it had enough meat to equal out the bread. I just wish the meat was layered better rather than folded so most of it was on one side. I liked the Italian dressing, and they put just enough on to taste but not so much that the bread was soggy by the time I got home, unlike most places. The NY potato salad and mac and cheese were both good. My only issue, and the reason for three stars instead of four, was the packaging. As soon as I took my sandwich out of the bag, the pickle which was loosely wrapped with it fell out onto the floor. Both the cold sandwich and salad and hot mac n cheese were placed in one bag, so that affected the temperature of all items. I certainly could've asked for separate bags but didn't think of it, as I've gotten used to many places doing this routinely. All in all, I'd recommend Crabapples as a good place for lunch. Try their sides instead of chips you can get anywhere, and you'll feel as if you're getting more value for your money. Just watch out for your pickle! :) read more

DELICIOUSTOWN!!!! I regularly go out of my way to stop by this deli! My go-tos: Tuscany Chicken Club, French Quarter, side of Shrimp Salad. My husband has insisted for years that he didn't like cold salads and I insisted that he tried the Shrimp, he is hooked! Awesome side dish to grab on the way over to a friends house! The tuna salad comes to a close 2nd! One other thing to take note of is the egg sandwiches! I don't think people always know that these are available but they serve them until 1030. Crabapples has been apart of must of us locals everyday lives. Every morning I come in and am greeted with smiles from all. Its a great start to the day! The food is great! He is still very uncustomer-service oriented and I am not alone in my line of thinking. Have no idea why anyone would rank this below a four or five.. I've enjoyed lunch here for years--perfect downtown location. You're not supposed to, but you can actually park next door if you're in and out (hint: space 19). Use the $1 garage a half block west if there's no street parking (and you want to eat in).
