8 Mile Bar & Grill -- Fried pickles, cold beer, and post-raft perfection After a full day of rafting (read: screaming, paddling, bonding, and getting smacked in the face with joy and river water), we floated our hungry, soggy selves straight into 8 Mile Bar & Grill. It was like they were waiting for us--with cold drinks, fried things, and the promise of dry chairs. Beer selection? Generous. Beautiful. A full beer menu that made us feel seen. I got a shandy that tasted like summer vacation in a glass. Light, citrusy, and just what my inner "fun mom" needed after braving rapids and teenage attitudes. The kids were equally pumped about their soft drinks (probably because no one made them share or filter river water through a life straw). They were just happy. And quiet. Which is the dream. Now. Let's talk about the fried pickles. These weren't your average sad little slices. Oh no. These were spears. Like crunchy, salty dill torpedoes of happiness. We housed them like we hadn't eaten since breakfast. No regrets. Add in the cheese curds -- crispy, melty, glorious -- and you've got a fried food symphony worthy of applause (and maybe a Tums, but worth it). Service was fast, friendly, and unfazed by our damp, sunburned chaos. We left full, happy, and maybe a little bit in love with whoever invented shandies and deep-fried pickles. 10/10 would recommend post-adventure (or literally anytime you want to eat like you earned it). read more

Sadly, my once favorite seasonal Canon City spot has lost its groove. Still, a great open space with beautiful views. Plenty of parking. Lots of beers on tap and then the good times end. Apparently, "to make it easier" they have turned into a counter service place with a very limited menu. Now, they never had a huge menu, but this is just bare bones. Their once famous chicken sandwich was dropped a couple years ago (guess it wasn't famous enough) and replaced with a more basic one. This year it was a thin recently frozen patty that was deep fried- not great. The cabbage on top was chopped at some point way earlier in the week, because it was discolored and wilted. The menu said it had a chipotle flavor, but it was just basic and bad. The fries - also clearly frozen - were ok, but battered in something and nothing to write home about. Oh and to get this overpriced frozen food you get to stand in a line at the front and order and wait at a table for it to be run out to you. Others got water from the bartender (even a dog), we were told if we wanted water we needed to fill our cup from the jug on the opposite wall. We did get our beer delivered. I only ate half of my food and I will not be back. Go next door to Whitewater, you will get decent food for the insane tourist trap money they charge- even if you have to sit on terrible seat and be assaulted by too loud country music - at least you get a waiter and a diverse menu that wasn't recently defrosted. What an amazing view ! Just stop for something! Surely you need some sort of refresher& this place will feed your soul. Just stop & enjoy the ambiance! However , a meal here is a treat! We enjoyed our orangeBeer and banana BEER VERY MUCH . Our onion rings "weren't available"& our French Fries were stone cold but we didn't really want them , so we didn't make a fuss . Our elk burgers were slightly over cooked but the goat cheese and arugula toppings were choice, so a little Mayo moistened things up nicely . Our waitress was beyond perky and several other staff stopped by to "check on us "too and everyone was extremely enthusiastic. We decided to stop and have some beers and food after going white water rafting with these guys. The service was incredible! Dancie was attentive and friendly. She was amazing! She recommended the french onion dip, we are glad that we followed her recommendation. It was smooth and delicious. It came with house chips. Sadly the food took over two hours to get to our table. We were a party of 6, we all ordered burgers. I don't understand the delay, since burgers shouldn't take that long. Once we got our food, the burgers were so dry that it was hard to swallow each bite. We were disappointed that the burgers were so bad after having to wait two hours for them. On the flip side the drinks and service were on point. If we ever come back, we might just stick to appetisers and drinks. read more

However the rest of the family ordered burgers and they were a bit dry/salty. I also wish fries weren't an "upgrade". Chips just made it more dry. Burger price gets steep too, at $15. I want to give this place six stars. The staff was professional, obviously well trained, very nice and personable. We waited about 30 minutes for our food (we were a party of 6). But when it did come it was amazing. I had the bison burger with all the fixings and their house sauce and it was the bomb diggity. Our server was busy with multiple tables but handled it like a pro and didn't make us wait for anything we needed at any point in our meal. 10/10 would definitely go back and recommend! We been rafting here quite a few times and always eat at 8 Mile after. Today no rafting just stopped in to enjoy the food. It's fresh and the sweet potatoe waffle fries are the bomb. If you are ever in this neck of the woods I recommend. Full bar as well. read more

Super friendly, super communicative and frankly the food was awesome. They even treated our Dog (Maddi) like a regular patron. I think she loved the Bacon platter ordered off a special Doggie menu:-). Clearly a well trained and passionate group working to handle a large crowd. I had their Local Chicken sandwich (swapped BBQ for the Blue Cheese dressing) and it was spectacular. Wife had a salad (forgot the menu name) and she raved how good it was. I don't recommend this place. I am from LosAngeles. I tried burgers in many places, but never ate such a hard chicken burger. its expensive than LA. 20$. Even with big knifes its hard to cut it. Avoid if possible when you have other options. Be prepared to pay 3$ extra for french fries and 3$ for grilled chicken. read more

We drove a ways to get here based on the amazing reviews. Maybe the 4 & 5 stars are based on ravenous teenagers after rafting. Very Good! We arrived before they opened and played a little volleyball, and corn hole. Staff was all very kind and attentive. Food was quick, hot and tasty. Large portions. The side of fries was enough for two meals alone! My husband and I shared the Mac n cheese which was super rich, we didn't even make a dent in it. Pleasantly surprised by our lunch here. We spent the morning roaming around the Royal Gorge and had initially planned on eating lunch in the Springs. Really hungry and with the toddler needing a nap, we stopped at 8 Mile instead. The open air garage felt pleasant on that hot day, and our server was super friendly. Our large group stopped here for lunch after a rafting trip with Echo Canyon next door, and I wasn't expecting much - maybe basic bar food and kid meals. But 8 Mile Grill & Bar had some things going for it, even if you hadn't been up since 6 am with nothing to eat. The tables are pretty much outdoor seating - most are out on a large covered patio, and there's a more covered bar area that still has one open wall facing out onto the patio. It stays shady and cool even during the glaring noon heat, and the ice water is quickly and plentifully refilled. The menu ranges from about $8-15 for lunch, and includes some sandwiches and burgers as well as more substantial entrees. The buffalo brat was large and flavorful, but a bit overcooked (it's easy to overdo buffalo), although the cheesy fries were savory and good. The grilled trout was excellent - unfortunately, it was supposed to come with sticky rice and mango salsa, both of which the kitchen was out of that day. However, they substituted mashed potatoes and veggies and then comped my meal, which I thought was more than fair. The carrot cake was ridiculously huge, like Claim-Jumper-sized, and had an unusual and tasty frosting and fruit sauce. Service was friendly but harried. Our server explained that it had been one of those days, and given the heavy amount of large groups from the rafting place, I can understand why. We weren't in a big hurry, so it was not a big deal, but if you're pressed for time and in search of a quick meal, this may not be the best place for that - especially if you have a big group. Seriously impressed with the three meals we had at this restaurant during our stay at the Royal Gorge Cabins. Not a fan of their breakfast but everything else is good. We had several different appetizers and everyone loved them. The mozzarella planks are delicious but could use more sauce with them. The fried pickles are actually slices and not chips but still amazing. The house made chips and French onion dip will make your breath smell for days but it's so worth it. The charcuterie and cheese is legit a work of art. Our entrees were just as good. The burgers were large and delicious. The sandwiches were good as well. Try some of the local beers on tap. Every time we went we experienced friendly and attentive service. We never needed drink refills. Stellar experience. read more
