Fantastic lunch at The Burrowing Owl. Was my first visit with friends from work, our host may have figured we hadn't been there before and asked if we knew it was a vegan, plant-based restaurant. He gave us some menus to look over and dipped into the kitchen to provide us a sample. He returns with a dish resembling nacho and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes. The sample was good so we stayed. I actually order half of Sasquatch nachos. Chips, queso, sloppy meat, lettuce/tomatoes and jalapenos. Wish there were more jalapenos but it was good. Service was great, and their beer selection is pretty stout. Settled for an Anderson Valley West Coast IPA and that was outstanding.y friends both tried the crunchy tacos and noted they were good. Visiting from Charlotte and we are vegans so was looking for all vegan restaurants near by, came across this and gave it a try. I have to say this didn't meet our expectations. We ordered Caesar salads with soy curl, bacon season salad and spicy Mac, none of these tasted good. The salad had this weird taste and smell that I ended up leaving all soy curls aside. The Mac and cheese was the worst - so liquidy and spicy, I hated the bean part in it but that was my fault Cz I didn't read the menu properly - spicy cheese have jalepeano chilli in it but anyways I can imagine even without chilli the Mac n cheese would have been so runny. The only one thing I really liked was the tomato soup. Having all that said this is just my opinion, my taste maybe different than yours. The menu seems very focused on "fake meat" and "fake cheese" products rather than having some main dishes that are naturally more vegan or vegetarian. The "fake" versions don't taste like the real thing, which is fine, but aren't interesting enough flavor-wise to make it worth it if you don't have those specific dietary restrictions. I'm gluten free and vegan and traveling from a state that has very limited options with my preferred diet. To my surprise, the Burrowing Owl had SO many options with all food being vegan, non-gmo and organic. My lovely waitress, Shea, brought me an entire list of ways to order their items gluten free. I got a GF chicken Caesar sandwich with their homemade gluten free mac n cheese. It was delicious! The only thing I had concerns about was the lack of staff, as Shea was managing the entire restaurant by herself, including bartending, serving and bussing tables. What an incredible spot! A must-visit for vegans -- and honestly, for anyone who appreciates great food. Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor. The menu features a variety of house-made drinks; I had the freshly squeezed ginger beer, which was delightfully spicy and refreshing. We also ordered the Friday special air-fried chimichanga and the taco salad -- both were excellent. The place was clean and eclectic but it is on the small side so it may be harder to find a table during busier hours. I was excited to try burrowing owl when I found out it was a completely vegan restaurant! The menu is unique and they have a variety of options from salads, wraps, burritos/tacos, bowls & specials. The special last night was a vegan version of the Taco Bell crunch wrap which seemed to be very popular. I tried the Christmas burrito that was full of rice, beans, guacamole, ranch and topped with salsa. It was huge and very flavorful! I also got a side of chips and salsa which added a perfect crunch on the side. This restaurant definitely has a lot of "imitation" dishes such as nachos or other dishes that are made with meat/dairy. Her approach wasn't just firm; it felt downright unkind, and it left me feeling like we were being discriminated against for my son's disability--something no parent should ever have to experience. For context, this restaurant does have a covered patio for smokers, but apparently no understanding or accommodations for families with special needs. The irony is not lost on me. Here's the part that stings the most: I've been vegan for 10 years, and prior to that, I was vegetarian for 13 years. The vegan community has always felt warm, welcoming, and inclusive--so I'm genuinely shocked and saddened that we had this experience here. After the uncomfortable encounter, I didn't even want to stay. But since we'd driven so far, my husband suggested we let our son eat his nuggets in the car, then come inside to eat ourselves. That's exactly what we did. The food? Honestly, it was mediocre at best--nothing special to write home about. The atmosphere felt more like a dive bar than a welcoming, family-friendly space. We will not be returning, and I plan to share this experience within my local autism community to help other families avoid a situation like ours.
