As any car owner on Oahu knows, getting a safety check is one of the most humbug requirements of owning a car. But not at 808 Safety, which is located behind the pastele store. Just a few minutes prior to pulling into this place, I was rudely blown off by the other safety check station just down the road ("What? We look like we open?" Well, actually, yes because their gate was open, the office was unlocked, and they were in the shop working. No hours posted). So I decided to break my loyalty from that other place, drove into 808 Safety and even though they were busy working on another car, they stopped what they were doing to at least talk to me PROFESSIONALLY, then grabbed my paperwork and did the safety check. In and out in less than 15 minutes. The thing with safety check stations is, once you find one you like, you go back there every year. I used to go to 808 safety every year to get my safety check, I am one for due diligence because I know for sure if you follow all that you won't run into any problems it's also required to have safety check registration and insurance for where I live and work.For the past 2 years I've had the same vehicle and got it check checked and I've passed with the same vehicle no alterations no additions no wear and tear but then all of a sudden there was a problem with my tint it had bubbles said the technician. I told the technician that the bubbles were there when I bought the car and they were here the previous two years I got safety checked and I said one year when I came here the guy just looked at my paperwork took pictures of my car and then handed me the new sticker he didn't even check my lights or blinkers or anything. I'm sure that's great and it saves time and it moves things along but that means it wasn't done correctly. So if I go there for the past 2 years and it's not being done correctly how am I a trust the opinion of someone that tells me that something that was fine the last two times isn't now is it because they're in trouble? That's great but that's not my responsibility. If you look up the Hawaii state DOT law the there is nothing listed about bubbles I went as far as to call the DOT State inspector and he said it was up to the technician so I told him that's acceptable to me but nothing has changed and I went to the same location for the past 2 years and now it's a problem so how am I to believe anything they say. And as far as customer service if you can't deal with an irritated customer that's fine. I'll admit that I was very irritated and I was using curse words but none of it was directed towards him I was only irritated about the situation and if you can't handle somebody talking abruptly when it's not even directed at you I don't think you should be handling any form of customer service. he gave me a very hard time and made things more difficult to me in the future. I will not be returning. Nor will my friends and family. read more

This Man and his shop is the real deal. My Wrangler died on the side of the road at 11:30 pm the night the curfew went into affect. Joe took my Jeep in at 1:30 am and fixed her the next day. I had several things that needed to be fixed. Joe called me and explained to me what work needed to be done. He went the conservative route. My water pump completely broke and he replaced that along with the radiator hoses. Now my Jeep was drive able but it still had a very slow leak going on. So he did some more tests right in front of me and my head gasket was good but the radiator needed to be replaced. He replaced it quickly and I really appreciated that because it's my daily driver. I drive to town every day and I feel so much better knowing that I have found someone whom I can trust and who loves animals too. read more

Fast friendly service. This is the only safety inspection center that is open on the west side on Sunday

Excellent service. First, the response was fast and within the timeline as mentioned in the Yelp. Second, he came in among the low estimates of about seven competitors that I messaged. He wasn't the lowest lowest, but among the lowest - the low three vendors were all in the same ball park. Third, he was able to take me immediately upon my earliest convenience. When I got there he did a good albeit quick inspection when I arrived to make sure that what I thought was the problem actually was the problem. I went for a replacement CV Axle (not boot, the whole thing). He promised same-day turn-around. Despite some complications he did get the vehicle back to me by close of business the same day. Hard working, knowledgeable mechanic. He updated me throughout the day with progress report and informed me of unforeseen problems. I know some of you might say "upsell" at the unforeseen problems but I am sure they were legit. I had previously worked on a similar problem, and another shop also told me about some of the things Joe at 808 Safety did find; I originally accused the previous shop of trying to upsell me on problems that weren't there but Joe found the same thing (and actually showed me) so I know it wasn't an upsell trick (at either shop). My vehicle was old - 14 years and 248,000 miles so I know some of the parts were frozen and secondary problems would be found. Is why I went to a mechanic and not did it myself. Joe and his crew will show you the removed parts and how/where they malfunctioned, so you can be relieved that you had the correct work done for the right reasons. Also a general good "vibe" from the man and his crew. Polite, explained everything in terms one can understand, and thorough. Only minor glitch was one of my credit cards didn't swipe his machine well but another one did. Common at small businesses so no problem. I like that he stuck to his estimate, his promised timeline, and he was able to pull in the parts early the same day. I hate it when I have to drop off a vehicle and they need to keep it a couple days because they don't have the part (stealerships that's YOU!). Other minor glitch is that the Yelp page says 808 Safety does state safety inspections, but they don't. Not yet anyway, but I think they are awaiting approval from state bureaucracy. Overall the good things far far outweighed the two minor things. I highly recommend 808 Safety, he will be the first mechanic I query for future repairs, and looks like Joe/808 Safety will be my family's go-to from now on. Time will tell if the repair sticks, but I have high hopes of that as of right now and am happy with the service I got from 808 Safety and Joe and his crew. 808 Safety and Joe are excellent.
