The story of how we ended up here is hilarious. My fiancé told me he wanted to knock on the janitor's closet to say hi to the janitor because he knows him. So we stood outside this random door for about a minute while he knocked again, and I finally said, "Babe, can we just come back tomorrow and say hi to the janitor then?" I had absolutely zero idea it was a speakeasy. When they opened the door I was shocked! This speakeasy is such a fun find in Eugene. It is super moody and dark inside in the best way, and the atmosphere feels very hidden and intentional. We tried a bunch of the small plates and every single one was delicious. We celebrated my husband's birthday with a quick staycation trip from Portland to Eugene. We decided to slip into 86 Speakeasy in The Gordon Hotel before dinner. The hotel is adorable, even featuring a little art center. The speakeasy entrance is a unique experience - you walk down a hallway to a "Janitor" door, flip a switch to announce yourself, and then provide the password you received via text before your reservation tieme. Getting into this place is the coolest part. You have to have a reservation and the password changes every night. They send you the instructions and it's so incredibly fun! While they do serve food, it's more of an appetizer fare. It seems to be a bit complicated too because there's one bartender in the place so it seems like a lot to manage. The drink list seems to have a lot of spirit-forward options and I tend to prefer drinks on the sweet side. The space is relatively quiet and we seemed yo catch the bartender on a bad night. He seemed to be less than thrilled about his work and it was hard to not overhear him complaining. After one drink - we decided to head out because it felt awkward. He did share that if you don't have a reservation, you may be able to slip him a $20 to get in even without a password. read more

Really disappointed by how bad this place has gotten. Took over 5 min to have the door answered. The bartender was either drunk or high, and literally knocked over a drink he was making. The drinks are $14+ but the bases they use are standard wells (you're not even getting standard quality gin or bourbon in the drink you order off the menu). The bar was soaking wet, not a single cocktail napkin in sight. Also, your "reservation" is supposed to be for 75 minutes. The place was half empty and yet they closed us out at 60 minutes. Been here once before right after it opened and it was a lot of fun. Now it's just overpriced nonsense. Having been to speakeasys around the country, this experience was pathetic. Worse than a standard cocktail bar. You're better off making cocktails at home--even if you're inexperienced, it will be better the drink the bartender here threw together and had to remake because he spill it all over himself. **two stars because they do have a solid selection of liquor. I would've liked more garlic flavor. And more bread. I ordered some at an extra charge, but they gave us crostinis instead. The crostinis were way too hard/crunchy for the sauce. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. It was fun to have to provide a password to get in. The décor reflects the period of a speakeasy - low lights, dark colors, small space and lovely glassware. We sat at the bar and were served very elegant and delicious cocktails by a very friendly bar person. S/he/They were attentive to our needs and offered complete explanations about the various cocktail ingredients as well as other recommendations on particular liquors and why they were chosen for certain cocktails. FYI - This is not a place to get a dinner, the menu is appetizers. The only criticisms I have for 86 Speakeasy are simple: 1. They did not inform us that our visit with them was limited to 1.5 hours. when we wanted to order an additional appetizer, that was when we were told we would not have enough time. When letting them know we had no idea about this, I was told it was stated on the website. I rechecked and could not find that info. 2. One appetizer we ordered clearly stated it was accompanied by grilled vegetables, which was what attracted me to order it. When it came, the vegetables were raw and included cucumbers. (I would probably never grill cucumbers!) When I checked with the barperson, I was told that this item always came with the raw ones and after doublechecking the menu, s/he/they agreed about the description. So, I was disappointed. While nothing spectacular happens inside the room itself, it is overall just a fun experience. Giving the password through the tiny slot and being let in is cool. The inside is small, quiet, and feels very exclusive. The two bartenders working were friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations. We didn't order any food inside but we did eat dinner at the Gordon Tavern beforehand and it is the same food that the tavern serves, just a smaller selection. After hearing so much about this place, we decided to check it out. It's a fun concept to reserve online, wait for your password to arrive the day of reservation and then find the door marked Janitor in the lobby of the Gordon Hotel. Flip the switch at the door, and a little cutout in the door will be openen and you provide the password, and you are IN.... Fun! The speakeasy is small with about 10 bar stools and 10 tables. We were seated at the bar which was perfect since we just came in for a drink. Nice prohibition era cocktail choices like Manhattan, Sazerac, Aviator etc. The bartender was very nice and friendly and mixed an awesome cocktail! Gorgeous glassware and a beautiful decor makes for a fun time, despite the cocktail being on the small-ish side and pricey. I am glad we did not come for dinner since the food choices are limited to appetizers only. It is worth checking them out if you have never been! read more

You make a reservation online and get a text with the password and then there's a whole little ritual where you go the "Janitor's Closet". The bartender was friendly and sassy. The hostesses were friendly and attentive. We got some tasty calamari with our drinks and enjoyed ourselves and the atmosphere. I got a vodka cocktail, and a second one that was a variation on a Negroni. To begin with, the "process" of getting into the establishment, while some might accuse as being gimmicky, is a great deal of fun. Finding the janitor's closet, ringing the bell, providing the password through a slot in the door, and being welcomed into a perfectly 20's-esque interior is nothing short of thrilling. Background music and the conversation of others blended together in the small room to create an atmosphere that was energetic but not frenetic. The mixologist at the bar was absolutely amazing--she respected our preferences and crafted three STUNNING zero-proof drinks of which we enjoyed every single sip. (The NA espresso martini was a surprise hit!) Although we did not enjoy any of the food from the menu of small bites, I found myself licking my lips as I watched plates of snacks and slider sandwiches sail by...next time I visit (and there WILL be a next time!) I so dislike leaving poor reviews but I have to be honest when necessary. 1 star for the kind bartender 1 star for her offering us a drink on the house Beware the Tock reservation system. I made a resy for 10pm on a Tuesday in the summer. Got a confirmation text, was charged $3 to hold our spot, etc. My hubby and I show up right on time and ring the bell once (as mentioned on the site)...we wait about 6 minutes and ring again. After 15 minutes, we ring a 3rd time (not sure it's a bell at all) and I eventually head to the front desk. The gal starts to help me, then pauses and helps a guy needing a charger...okay? And then goes to see why the bar isn't opening their door for us. Eventually a gal opens the speakeasy door and comes out to chat with us. She claims our reservation is for 9:30 and that they were busy washing dishes and didn't answer the door. Um...I have a reservation for 10. She proceeds to fight with me about the time (even though I have an email) and then even begins to blame me for what is going on. UNbelievable. Like I couldn't believe it was happening. I could say more things but it was highly uncomfortable and just a downright crap experience. I told her we were celebrating our anniversary and just wanted to get a drink. I couldn't believe I was arguing with a short woman holding an iPad about when MY reservation was. (Please teach your hosts about customer service. It's embarrassing.) Eventually I asked if we could just get a drink and she went back and took her time asking the bartender. Then she finally opened the door and ushered us in. No kind words, never apologized. Music was off and had to be turned back on for us. No chance to say the password, no chance to experience a little speakeasy magic. Just an absurdly rude hostess and a door held open so we could spend money we didn't even want to spend at this point. Well, the shining star was the bartender who covered one of our drinks because she "didn't know what kind of attitude the hostess gave us" with a wink. Fun place to feel special in. Get the password before you go or you'll be left standing at the janitors closet door; it is a speakeasy. I'm fairly certain our group had one of everything on the small plate menu, sometimes two! Everything was wonderful, especially the calamari. The cocktail list is nifty; prohibition style recipes. Ok, so the idea of a speakeasy is super fun. 86 is super tiny, and has a great selection of whisky, bourbon, scotch, cognac. This is inside the Gordon hotel. You have to go to the lounge host to get the password for the janitor closet. Then you have to give the password to the "janitor" to get it. The atmosphere is dark, almost gothic. Cool chandeliers and feels swanky. The service from the bartender, and the host were spot on. The bartender even came out to show me the bottle of the gin I ordered for my Martini to let me know it was local. And unique. The server was a bit distracted, and not attentive. We ran out of drinks and had to flag down the host to get another ordered. She left four menus on our little table too. When we ordered, I asked the server what the cheeses and meats were on the cheese plate and she actually said, "I don't know, and I'd have to leave and go to the restaurant to find out" with the tone like it would be ludicrous to have to do that. I said, ok, please do that. And she did, but seemed surprised that I'd make her do that. We ended up ordering the cheese plate and it was beautiful. The cheeses were very basic and commodity, but, everything else was super yummy. At the end of the day, it was pleasant and tasty. Just a little surprised by the server. Especially in such a small place. We will return! With the hopes that we can sit at the bar instead of a table. One tip, make a reservation! read more

After making a reservation online it was easy to get in. Typically a speakeasy has excellent service, attention to detail and the whole nine yards. It just wasn't there. It seemed the staff lacked training/experience. After ordering the hummus plate, they did not bring plates or silverware or napkins. We were not checked on frequently enough for us to ask for them (although we should have to ask), and when we finally did, we were already halfway done with our plate. And when we asked for plates, they brought two, however, when we ask for silverware, we were only brought one set. Really? The most popular drink on the menu, according to our waitress, was something along the lines of beautiful fool. It was OK, it tasted more like lemon juice than anything else. Nothing special, other than the fact that it was a pretty drink. Two people came and asked us for drink orders. It just seems is not well managed and the staff to have full control on the floor. At a place like this not only drinks have to be on point, but so should the service. Otherwise you're just at another typical bar.
