    Pork & Shrimp Siu Mai

This is one of your classic Chinese / dim sum mixed restaurants. We ordered from both menus this visit. I do feel their typical Chinese food is better than what they serve for dim sum. Service was good. I'm glad they did check up on us often. The look inside felt like one of those hole in the wall Chinese restaurants with a lot of character. Not bad if you're looking for some dim sum, but wish they had more options on that side.

Food has great wok-hei (heat of the wok). Service was slow. It took forever for the food to come. Ambiance was cute. They served dim sum...that I did not try. Overall, enjoy food.

For a quick dose of Chinese cravings, I'd go here. You will get the basics here especially during jury duty which can be stressful at times. What I like is you can taste it is freshly cooked. Combo is the way to go, like shooting two birds with one shot. Staff was attentive, made sure you're taken cared of. Ambiance-wise, they tried to make you feel the Chinese. For me, it's a homey Chinese place at the same time convenient bar where they have the basics. Can't be diving too much near the courthouse.

Due to the lack of great dim sum options in the Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill/Concord area, I had my eye for a while on this little "café" in Martinez that serves dim sum. But before getting to the food, let's talk about parking. Since the restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Martinez, parking can be a bit tricky. However, if you don't mind walking a few extra blocks, you can usually find free street parking in the nearby residential area. When we walked in, my first impression was that the restaurant felt quite dark and could benefit from a bit more lighting. The ladies who served us were friendly, though, so service-wise I have no complaints. Their dim sum selection was fairly limited--maybe around just 20 items or so. We ordered 7 dishes for variety. Overall, the dim sum was okay. The standouts were the pork siu mai and the custard buns. Normally, shrimp dumplings are my favorite, but I didn't quite love them here. The dumpling skin/wrapper tore apart so easily when we picked it up with our chopsticks--maybe they were steamed too long? I'm not sure. That said, I actually enjoyed the flavor of the shrimp and scallop dumplings, but they had the same wrapper issue, which left me feeling conflicted. Given that there aren't many dim sum options in the area, I was still surprised to see their prices, which were comparable to high-end dim sum places like Koi. So, I think the overall price point felt a bit high for what we got. While there were some areas for improvement during our dim sum brunch, I would still like to give this place at least another try. One item I'm especially curious about is the Peking duck--I've seen photos of it on Yelp, and it looks great. Maybe next time.

Vintage Chinese style restaurant. You feel like you're back in the 1960's. We had a lunch special which included soup and egg rolls. The prawns and vegetables was very good and we opted for chow mein instead of rice. Nice portions and good service!

Was super curious about this place since I used to work close by and I'm glad I finally gave it a try. Their lunch special is extremely affordable at $13 per item on the menu! The dim sum menu was a little pricier than I had hoped but this siumai was really delicious and fresh with huge pieces of shrimp throughout. Was really worth it and I hope to come back and try more of the menu

I've been here on multiple occasions for both dine-in and take-out and the food is always solid! We pretty much only order their dim sum, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but I'm hoping to try more in upcoming visits! They even have a lunch menu on the weekdays that seem like a good deal, is it comes with an entree, soup, egg roll, and rice. Any of their dim sums that include shrimp are great! I especially love the shrimp/scallop, the hargow, and the shrimp/cilantro! The protein inside is big and juicy. The pork bun and sticky rice are decent! Nothing to write home to but hit the spot/satisfy the craving. The fresh bean curd isn't is just okay, probs wouldn't order it again. The service is always friendly.

Long overdue review for Aberdeen Cafe. We first went to Aberdeen last year and have been there half a dozen times now. Aberdeen's menu is a combination of dim sum and Cantonese food. We've probably tried about a third of the menu and everything we have had was solid. This last time, we visited for Saturday lunch and the restaurant was at capacity. It took a long time to get through lunch, so a word of warning if you're in a rush. A few things we like to get: Peking Duck - this is a very good version of this dish and it is the best one we've found at this price in the Bay Area. Skin is extra crispy but meat is bone on so you need to work a little. Instead of thin wrappers, they serve a half duck portion with 6 small steamed buns as default. For dim sum, we've been happy with everything, including Shrimp Dumpling, Bean Curd Skin Roll with Pork and Shrimp, Pan Fried Shrimp and Chive Dumpling, Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf, and Steamed Egg Custard Bun. One thing I am always a sucker for is Scallion Pancakes. Unfortunately, I'm usually disappointed, but they make a good one here.

Wanted to get some dim sum and my regular place was busy, looked up for another place that wasn't too far from me and found Aberdeen Cafe in Martinez. The place is pretty good size that has good seating, you can see the cooks make the food in certain part of the Restuarant. The servers were nice and friendly, looks like family owned. They have some dim sum items and a variety of dishes that are very good like garlic string bean, house chow mein, and the fried calamari. This is one of my fave Chinese spots that I discovered on Yelp.

For Mother's Day, my brothers and I brought our mom here, and we were pleasantly surprised! S E R V I C E: There is street parking, and we got very lucky finding a spot right in front. We were seated right away, and everyone was very kind. The restaurant inside was spacious and decor was simple. Our food came in a timely manner, and we didn't feel rushed or anything like that. F O O D: We ordered shrimp dumplings, siu mai, pork ribs, sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf Dim Sum, Chicken Feet in Black Bean Sauce Dim Sum, Chicken Chow Mein, and Garlic Bok Choy. My family dominated the pork ribs and chicken feet, while I really enjoyed the flavors of the chow mein and bok choy. O V E R A L L: I wouldn't mind coming back if I'm in town again! The prices were manageable and of course, the food was amazing.

Food cold, chow mein flavorless, egg roll mushy inside told me that how it's supposed to be. I have never had an egg roll mushy insides. Service terrible. Waited 40 minutes at lunch, here before everyone came in. Made excuses. Worst chinese food. Its on the level of those fast food buffet bars for cheap. But this food is expensive! For low grade tasting food and service Don't even bother, you will be super disappointed and irritated like myself

THIS IS THE BEST Dim Sum I've had since New York. I was out running errands. I don't live in town, so finding Dim Sum while out was great. Honestly, I was a little skeptical because of the name - a Chinese restaurant named Aberdeen Cafe? The reviews were good, so I thought I'd give it a try. Oh... My... Goodness!!! I enjoyed a bowl of hot and sour soup that had so much flavor! What a great start! Then, turnip cakes. Perfection - not oily, just great texture and again, great flavor. The Shrimp and Scallop dumplings were packed full. The Fried Shrimp and Chive dumplings were my favorite. And the Shrimp dumpling with cilantro was awesome, as well. I brought a lot of it home along with some pork & shrimp siu mai. Wow. So good, it's worth a special trip!!!

Great Chinese & dim sum in one. Such a treat to go everything . One of my favorite restaurants

Aberdeen Cafe Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Aberdeen Cafe

How on earth is a Chinese restaurant named for a Scottish city? There has to be a good story there. I do remember eating at an Indian restaurant whose owners had strong Glaswegian (from Glasgow in Scotland) accents.

It's a burb in Hong Kong.

    Can you order to go?

Yes. I even saw doordashers picking up orders.

    Do you provide outdoor seating?

No. Go to the nearby park or sit on the curb and eat Chinese from a take out box.

Are they on a delivery service platform?

Only Door Dash, and Aberdeen deprioritizes these orders. The dasher waited 2.5 hours to have the food ready.

I've heard of Yi Ji Chang Fen but only tried it today. I've eaten so much dim sum in my lifetime, so my standard for dim sum may be higher. We came around 5PM on a Saturday and there wasn't anyone really there. It could be because dim sum feels more like a morning or lunch thing, or it could just be because we were there for a very early dinner. Between our party, we shared: - Marinated Chicken and Mushroom Rice Roll - Stuffed Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf - Steamed Chicken Feet w/ Black Bean Sauce - Black Gold Egg Custard Buns - Chicken Feet with Herbs - Dry Style Beef Chow Fun And one Honey Lemon Tea for me. The honey lemon tea was a comfort for the cold day. Maybe a bit too much honey, but still good for the throat during the dry season. The chow fun came first and surprisingly it was not bad. There was a bit of 'wok hey' there and it stands out as one of the better dishes we had. As for the rice roll - I wanted to try something less conventional and I've never seen chicken in rice rolls, so I thought it would be interesting to try. It was quite disappointing though. Their rice roll was bigger than normal in width so with rice rolls being a struggle to pick up already, the bigger size made it an even bigger struggle. Everything just slipped out of the rice roll and it wasn't evenly wrapped. There were some bunched up layers on the edges. I think the chicken just didn't pair that well either and it was lacking in ingredients. Maybe the more conventional rice rolls would be better. For the two types of chicken feet, I normally like the one in herbal soup. If made well, the chicken feet has a nice flavor to it. For Yi Fen's herbal chicken feet, their portion was pretty good, but flavor was less prominent. I enjoyed the chicken feet in black bean sauce more because the flavor was better. Lastly, for the stuffed sticky rice and black gold egg custard buns, I suspect that these are not made in-house, but rather store-bought. The sticky rice lacked ingredients and the rice was a little harder than if made fresh. And the perfectly shaped black buns with a golden brush stroke on top (which I've seen all over the internet) seemed too elevated-looking compared to everything else. I'm not the biggest fan of molten lava buns, but they came out nicely. I didn't have any, but the molten lava custard was pretty runny. All in all, an okay experience. Service was a bit lacking. I don't recommend the dim sum dishes, but if I happen to want congee, I may give this place another go. Apart from the dim sum and rice rolls, the noodles I glimpsed from other customers looked not bad. I wonder if other locations are better.

Over the last couple years I've been trying to start it earlier and earlier during the holidays so that I don't feel horrible after Jan 1st. I realize Im getting older and I just want to eat more healthy meals at home in general. Because of that, I decided to stop making like 95% I used to make. Orange Chicken and Beef Chow Fun was part of that list This meal was supposed to be one of the last times I ate this meal and while it wasn't bad, I definitely felt just a tad disappointed with the quality. First off, respect for using thighs for the chicken. I feel like chicken breasts are doable but I feel like ultimately chicken thighs are the way to go for Orange Chicken. I really think that chicken breasts should just be reserved for something like Lemon Chicken. I also like that they give you a good amount of chicken too. A tiny more than I normally expect. Or at least thats how it felt. The flavor wasn't bad either but I the texture wasn't the best. Lots of the breading on the pieces were coming off easily which isn't the end of the world but it just felt like a single fried was used instead of a double fry for extra crispy. Not saying that happened but thats just what it felt like. It could have also been that it was sitting at the restaurant longer than usual. Im guessing it was the latter since I ordered DoorDash. I also ordered the Beef Chow Fun. It was fine but just overall found the sauce lacking. Same deal with the Potstickers. The texture was fine but flavor was just ok. I was really excited to try these too since it seemed like a favorite in town. But they were just ok imo. I honestly just felt like a lot of food just was rushed a little. The interesting thing though is this place also does sushi too so Im curious if their Japanese part of the menu maybe better than their Chinese side? Or Vise versa. Hard to say but I do want to try them again soon.

Clean and roomy. Steamed dumplings (pork) were tasty. The skin can be slightly thinner though. Cold noodles and pig ears were tasty too. Will come again to try other items.

This is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the area, or at least it's our #1 favorite. The…read moreone thing that really stands out the most to us is their Sichuan Beef Stew Noodle Soup, which I've praised so many times in my previous reviews so I'm not gonna repeat myself so that I don't sound like a broken record, but it's just so good! Another thing we ordered when we visited this restaurant yesterday was the Sichuan Cumin Beef. I honestly forgot how much we liked this dish. The way they cooked it yesterday was incredible. Every bite was packed with flavor (savory, very cumin-y and spicy!) , and even the veggies were fully infused with it. It went perfectly with steamed rice. I want to give a warning though, because this dish was extremely spicy, which I personally loved. I liked it so much that I ended up ordering another one to go so I could keep eating it at home over the next few days, lol. I also want to give a shout out to the guy who was basically single-handedly running the restaurant yesterday. He saw us walk in carrying a car seat and offered us a high chair, but he flipped it upside down so we could safely place the car seat on it. Such a simple back but genius. On top of that, he was super friendly the entire time. The restaurant was pretty empty, which is pretty normal for this restaurant whenever we visit it, although they seem to get a lot of takeout orders - happy for them. The empty restaurant actually worked out perfectly for us since we had a baby with us, haha. Overall, it was a really good dining experience, and I'd definitely keep coming back whenever I'm in the area.

While he was working incredibly hard, it's unfair to both the staff and the customers to have a "one-man show" during dinner rush. We waited 30 minutes for drinks and a full hour for food--which is nearly impossible when you have a hungry toddler with you. We ordered a non-spicy dish (lotus root) for our toddler, but it arrived spicy anyway. Since we couldn't wait another hour for a remake, she ended up just eating white rice. To top it off, our beef tripe and blood in hot pot broth dish arrived without the blood. When we finally flagged Rambo down, he explained they intentionally exclude it because some customers find it "smelly." As a Chinese customer who specifically ordered the dish for the blood, I found this frustrating and deceptive. If an ingredient is being removed from a titled dish, guests must be notified upfront. We enjoyed the flavors of the spicy tan tan noodles, lotus root, black pepper lamb, and ma-po tofu, but the management needs to hire more weekend staff. We'll stick to takeout from now on.

The waitstaff is pleasant and explained how the pricing worked. We were worried cuz we thought we might overlap into dinner prices which started at 3:30 (17.99) but she said as long as we didn't eat the dinner items we were fine. They had sushi and chinese food so not much more you could ask for. There's a wide variety for honestly, it's not bad bot it's not great either. It's about quantity not quality so if you want a lot of food and am not picky then you'd prolly like it! Most items were a bit bland and just a little off. For example, the sushi rice could use a little more rice wine, the shrimp could have used a little salt and pepper and been a bit crispier. I ate a bunch of sushi cuz who can resist? Bit the tastiest items were the onion rings (reminded me of Jack in the Box), the fried chicken wings (who doesn't love fried chicken wings?) and surprisingly the garlic string beans and chow mein. The place is large and the people nice. Lots of people coming in to eat so it's a popular spot. I don't think you'd ever have to wait for a table. Would I eat here again? Maybe cuz the price is reasonable and there are a few items I enjoyed.

I love all the soups here, the sticky rice in the pineapple was delicious as well as the shrimps. Sushis were not bad. I also enjoyed the soft serve ice cream and pastries. Overall, I would come back again.
