So I ordered the Shanghai Chicken Chow Mein and was a little let down. When you took a bite, it tasted like most Chow Meins Ive had in the past but there was something about the after taste that just tasted off. Like I definitely could taste like there might have been the usual of soy sauce, dark mushroom soy sauce, oyster sauce mixture which Im all about. But there was something that just seemed off. We also ordered some Spicy Wontons and Xiao Long Baos that were just ok. The one thing that was super tasty were the Lumpia and I wasn't even expecting that to me on the menu. I'm not sure if I would order here again after going to a lot of similar places in the area but if you can't cross the bridge or make the trek to Elk Grove, I suppose this is decent. read more

First timer here. Honestly it was pretty decent. The shiumai stole the show. It tasted so fresh and you can taste all the ingredients. Texture was firm but not chewy. I also got the beef rolls (deep fried roll). It was a little overpowering with the cilantro and I was a little surprised of the cold beef. With a little sauce that they provide on the table, it was pretty good. I also got the shrimp chow mein to compliment everything. Flavor is strong and tasty. Didn't like the red onions but the noodles and shrimp were great. The tables were clean and staff were very friendly. 3/28/24 A pleasant meal today with my sweetheart. Out first time back to this area since the Covid plague and it is nice to see the new stores that have opened. This includes 88 Bao Bao. Some photos and notes from our visit for your perusal. PHOTO #.... 1. An 11 mile drive plus bridge toll to get here. A modest looking shop in a nice strip mall area in Vallejo. Parking is fairly easy in the large parking lot. The Grand Entrance. 2. A small busy place, you order and pay at the counter before you take a number to place the table you choose. I have an aversion to crowds and lines and I almost did an about face. Glad I didn't. 3. We find a table next to a window where you can watch food prep. The kitchen and employees look clean and serious. Occasionally you see fire come up from frying food burning off alcohol. 4, 5. The Chicken Egg Fried rice arrives. We dig in so fast our forks are a blur. The food is hot. The chicken is moist. The rice has that deliciousness thing that makes your tongue scream for more. My wife liked it but thought it's a bit too oily. You tell me what you think. 6. Condiments are on the tables. The wife asked a server for salt which was not on the tables and he promptly brought some back from the kitchen. 7,8. Pork Xiaolong Bao arrives about twenty minutes after the fried rice. They are filled with piping hot meat and broth. Be careful not to eat before they cool down a bit. These are very delicious to me. The wife says she has had a little bit better in the Philippines. I had those in the Philippines as well and I say it's a toss up. You be the judge. 9,10. There is one - choose your own gender - - restroom in the back past the storage racks. It is well stocked and clean but for some bits tissue that need a broom. 11. If you have food left to take home, the restaurant wisely has stacked serve yourself To Go containers near the cashier. Pro Tip - There is no chili oil there so plan ahead. 12. We pretty much polished everything off and are satisfied. We are taking a container of rice home. 13. I was very excited to see this place open up in Vallejo. I really really enjoyed Asian cuisine of all ethnicities. My son really really likes dumplings so I thought I'd go grab some and we'll try it . I walked in this place one week and it was super busy. The day we walked in to order dinner was no different. It was a Friday evening. It was kids hanging out in the plaza. It was families inside dining. We ordered the egg, fried rice and shrimp dumplings, as well as the fried pork buns for my daughter and son. The rice was 100% hit and I enjoyed the shrimp dumplings which I took half home and fried the next day and I was still happy with them . The questionable item was the fried pork bun- which I don't think my kids understood what they were ordering. My son did liked them and the garlic sauce that is on the table is divine. It's been a long time coming but Vallejo finally has a dimsum spot! This place doesn't have the typical dimsum carts or extended menu that one might find at a more "authentic" restaurant but what they do serve hits the spot and they have all the basics. We had the pork soup dumplings, bbq pork steamed buns, egg fried rice and the beef rolls. We enjoyed it all. The egg fried rice had red onions which was different but still delicious. I never had beef rolls before but it was great, the cilantro gave it a distinct flavor. The soup inside the dumplings was plentiful. There is hot chilli oil and some sort of vinegar/soy sauce that is on every table. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the dishes! read more

What a great addition to Vallejo area. Very authentic Dim Sum and more. The service was very prompt and we were able to score a table in a full restaurant. supremely disappointing. the bbq pork bun had a meatball. it did not have bbq pork and there was not even a hint of 5 spice to even give the illusion that it was bbq pork. the potstickers were not pan fried - just pale and doughy. they were stuffed with the same meat as the bun. the shrimp dumplings looked ok but the dumpling was overly-thick and and a bit soggy. the filling made it further evident that they had been resteamed too long. the spring rolls looked promising until i cut into one. they were filled with nothing but a sparse bit of soggy cabbage and faint shreds that hinted that a minuscule amount of cooked to death pieces of carrot and scallion had been mixed with the cabbage. everything was bland, no 5 spice, no ginger, no sesame oil. no finely minced veg for texture. read more

3/30/25 - After a weekend like we had, no one was trying to cook. My cousin was the first to mention that she was craving Dim Sum. That sounded so good!!! I told her that I had Dim Sum the weekend before for lunch and it was good!!! Well, her daughter had to run an errand and offered to pick up our dinner. When you are young it doesn't take you long to do things, she was back in no time. While she was gone she added more dishes to what we ordered, so we had the royal spread. I really wanted to like this location because it is close to home. The other ones are the same quality. The dumplings were just ok. I usually order the pork XLB and the sticky rice dumpling with mushroom; this time the beef noodle soup. I think the soup was good because it was bland. Noodles were more stiff. The dumpings tasted bland and under steamed. What saves this place is easily getting the vinegar and garlic sauces at each table. Service was fast and staff was cordial. Quality Dim sum in Vallejo has been non existent for essentially more than 10 years. I'm happy to report this place has brought it and I hope it's here to stay! Offering up classic dim sum at a reasonable price, we decided to order takeout. Everything was well made and made to order from what I could tell. But I will say the food comes out fast so don't be discouraged if they don't have available seating. The turn around is quick and we got our food within minutes of ordering. Some must get dishes would be the pan fried pork buns and regular pork xiao long baos. Out running errands, and I was searching for something new for lunch. Discovering this place was a BIG WIN this afternoon. The food is great! I had Vegetable Shanghai Chowmein, noodles cooked perfectly. Flavorful and not too oily. (Could have used a few more vegetables, but it's a good dish.) Apparently their Orange Chicken was too new to be on the menu. Seeing their paper sign, I leaned in to try that. It's a sweet orange flavor with chicken cooked perfectly tender. The leek/pork/shrimp dumplings are like a steamed potsticker with a supple wrapper and a wonderful flavor-packed filling. And the Bao - the BBQ Pork Bun - was delightful. The dough was soft and fresh. And the filling was flavorful, with tender diced pork in their Bao sauce. The ONLY complaint I have about the food is that the Bao has too much dough and not nearly enough filling. (Please, just add a little more!) I ordered from the counter. It was my first time there and I said so. The woman taking my order was friendly enough, but by shoving the menu at me without explaining the process, made me ask step-by-step for the details about the ordering/service process. "I order here and you'll bring it to me? Or I have to come get it and bring it to my table?" Please, just welcome each customer in. Invite them to look at the menu. Tell them about the size of the dishes, and make recommendations. If I've never been here, I want to know that I've made the right choice. I didn't know until I got the food. There's no sense of pride or ownership in being customer facing. Training might be warranted here. The physical space (ambiance) is like a small diner. There are, perhaps, six tables. They seem set up for the to-go orders. That said, they will bring your food to your table if you order in (I found that out by asking). While they're not hostile, they're just not welcoming. The space isn't exactly a place to sit and enjoy your food. It's a place to eat and then get on with your day. I'm glad I took mine to go. Overall, great food. It's a tiny place that has never looked very inviting for dining in. We ordered take out the other night and let's just say I was glad I wasn't very hungry. There were three sauces with no explanation that all spilled on the way. The potstickers were off, filled with a flavorless, gelatinous mound and extra liquid. The doughy part was too thick and steamed with a slight pan sear at the end that prevented it from developing the bite in was looking for. The potstickers sauce was flavorless. The other two sauces seemed to be vinegar and a chili oil. My husband got the buns and third dish, the two most commonly ordered items according to their website. I needed a restaurant for takeout. After a search, I decided to try 88 Bao Bao in Vallejo, mainly because of the reviews and the fact that I love Dim Sum. We were all happy with my decision. I ordered BBQ pork Bao, soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, shrimp fried rice, chicken chow mein, garlic green beans, and cucumber salad. With the exception of the BBQ pork bao, everything was quite good. The dumplings had both a good flavor plus the proper texture. The fried rice was good. The chow mein was very good, and not too oily. The green beens were cooked just right, not too oily, and had a good flavor, and the cucumber salad was a great way to end the meal. My only complaint was the BBQ pork bao. It was a little too sweet for my taste, and the bun had a slightly off putting flavor as well as just the wrong texture. All-in-all, though, the food was quite good. The restaurant itself is fine. It was busy, with most of the tables occupied when I was there. Clean, well lit, and the service was friendly. Parking is super easy since it's located in a large shopping plaza near Ulta, Bath and Body Works, DSW, etc. The store front is a bit small. I like how you are able to watch the chefs cooking. The food is all made to order. We ordered the pork XLB, fried shrimp rolls, steamed pork buns, and pan fried pork buns. Every item came out hot and delicious. It was almost too much for two people. The last item to come out was the pan fried pork buns. My personal favorite was the shrimp rolls and the steamed bbq pork buns. The shrimp was fried to perfection without the heavy taste of oil. This is a frequent to go place for my family. Last Friday night, we had shrimp fried rice, XLB, and siomai. All are the best. There's lots and large shrimps on the fried rice. Each grain is separated, the peas and carrots were cooked perfectly. It's a fried rice that Uncle Roger would be happy. XLB has a small soup inside and eaten as a whole. It's an experience on its own. The siomai is legit with pork and shrimp, with no fillers. I'm not great at describing the taste, but dimsum is hard to do. I don't know another dimsum specialist around the area. So for Vallejo, it's 88 bao bao. I used to go to Vacaville to eat here, so happy they have a store close by. read more

Pork chow mein was good- I was expecting bbq pork but it was more of a pork belly. Pork Xialong bao was good, the bao was pretty thick, a bit too thick but it was tasty. Pork bun was good. Beef roll I did not care for. There was a spice in it that I do not like, I think 5 spice. This was the only item we did not like and did not take to bring home. The service was fast and friendly. The silverware was small and given spoons that were was matched. One was a wonton soup spoon and the other was more of a serving soup spoon. No biggie, just random.
