Garlic edamame
Caren F.

When I first came in, we were welcoming with a warm greeting. It was a Monday evening so it wasn't that busy at first, so we were able to get seated quickly. This is more of a self-ordering type of place. There's a pad where you can place your orders of the dumplings. I will say that I was impressed by the photos. As you can see from my photos, we ordered edamame, shrimp and leeks dumplings and some noodles. We wanted garlic edamame, but they didn't have it. They were pretty accommodating. They just put raw chopped garlic on our edamame, which was usually at places they would sautéed with the edamame. The dumplings are pretty good and I think my favorite was the noodles. Very tasty. Oh, we also ordered the sesame balls which were pretty good. The service overall was OK again because this is a place where you have to order. You really can't go wrong cause you're the one who's placing the order. He actually get your own in the front. They do bring me the food not quite sure if the 20% of the gratuity was worth it. However, I'm making the assumption that these are college students who are working here so I didn't mind giving the gratuity to help them out In terms of the place, it's pretty clean. Will they come here again? Maybe if I do we'll definitely update.

When I heard 88 BaoBao opened a new location in Davis, because we had good experiences with 88 BaoBao in the South Bay, while normally Yang Kee Dumpling is our go-to whenever we visit Davis, we had to give 88 BaoBao a chance to compete with Yang Kee. This location is pretty much self served, you order food using the iPad and the staff will bring them to the table. The inside of the restaurant is fairly tight, probably mainly serving takeout orders. To make the story short: 88 BaoBao did not meet our expectations. The taste of food were not on par with the other location, while the price of the dishes seem over priced. I think we'll stay with Yang Kee Dumpling.

TLDR: Convenient location, easy ordering, and solid Asian food at reasonable prices. The beef rolls were surprisingly really good. -------- This spot is located in the same plaza as Trader Joe's, which makes it very convenient to get to. When my friends and I visited, it was pretty busy, but the setup made things move smoothly. You can either dine in or order to go. For to go orders, there is a small kiosk area where you wait. If you dine in, which is what I chose, there are tablets at the table that let you place your order directly without waiting for a server. You also get your own cold water or tea from the pitchers near the to go kiosk. After you're done eating, you pay at the front register. I ordered three dishes. The beef rolls were easily the best of the three. The dough was nicely crisped, and the beef had a rich umami flavor that really stood out. The egg fried rice was simple and nothing particularly special, but it was still well seasoned and satisfying. The sesame chicken could have been a bit crispier, but the flavor was great and still enjoyable overall. Overall, this is a solid Asian food option in Davis with reasonable prices. I would definitely come back, especially for the beef rolls.

We were a little hungry and just wanted a little snack. We ordered some steam pork buns. The restaurant was filled with people eating at tables. The place is not very big, but there is a good number of tables. You order your food at the tablet at the table or there is a to go kiosk by the door. There was someone using the to go kiosk when we walked. We waited for like minute and the person at the counter helped us with our order. It was nice we didn't have to wait long to place our order. The steamed bun was nice and hot when we got our bag. Tasted pretty good. We would love to come back to try out some of the other items on the menu. The place was clean, had good service, and from the one item we tried. It was pretty good.

We are a frequent shopper in Davis and thought of checking out this place for lunch. The food was great and delicious. Some of the food was delicious and some of it was just ok. I always order green beans whenever we go to bao restaurant and I loved it. It is so tasty and has the right crunch. The service was great. We were seated right away and were attended by a staff that explained to us the concept of ordering from a menu. I loved that it is almost contactless visit. The place was quaint and clean. It seems that visitors are there to eat and leave not to hang oso you'll be seated right away.

Black garlic ramen - I order this a lot and have to say the broth flavor on this was top tier. Lots of roasted garlic cloves as well. Delicious ramen! Not over board in black pepper which I feel like happens a lot with ramen. Perfectly cooked soft egg and yummy corn! Also got the wontons in chili oil which were fabulous! My husband was worried about spice but I love it and I am happy to share it was not over the top spicy. Great flavor. Also got the pork xiaolong bao ( soup dumplings) so yummy! Albeit insanely hot and steamy. But once cooled off we inhaled them. I also appreciate the free green tea ice tea and the nice table garnish of garlic sauce, vinegar and chili paste. Also loved the soup dumpling spoons to keep from making a mess.

Beef Roll

Tried the Shanghai Shrimp Chowmein, Beef Roll, and the leek, pork, and shrimp dumplings. Overall, the eating experience was okay because the dishes were SO oily and the the oil that they used for the beef roll tasted a bit old. The Chowmein lacked flavor or "wok hei" which was not impressive. The beef roll lacked the cilantro (?) and the beef was dry and there was hardly any hoisin sauce (like a streak LOL). The overall beef roll was underwhelming, oily, skinny, and dry. The dumplings had such a thick skin but was actually juicy- not bad. The best part of the meal was the chili oil which had a Sichuan spice and paired well with the vinegar. The interior is small which had about 7 tables. And there is a kiosk to order. Service was good.

This place is not bad. It seems the price is very similar to other ramen shops in Davis. However the quality is mid. Tho I ordered a black garlic ramen, what I got was not the same as black garlic ramen from other reputable ramen shops. The only saving grace is that the portion is big enough to share. Instead of the dumplings, we ordered the bbq pork buns. That's an interesting take. Get ramen and dumplings/SLBs/BBQPB at the same locale. This is many Asian restaurants rolled into one. For that it can be both good or bad. They are either Jack of all Trades or Master of None. The verdict is still out. I guess you need to risk it all for yourself. Service is ok. Ambiance is better than expected. Average C for Chinese Cuisine with Ramen

It's in the place formerly known as the U-Mall, across the Mendocino Farms which you can see from the road (Russell Blvd.). Food- nice and hot. Reasonably seasoned, although "it isn't like SF" (sorry you didn't get in to Cal) we get it. The wrappers on the XLB seemed a bit thick, I must admit. Service- the internet was down when we got there but it looks like you order at the table via tablet and they bring it out to you. Ambiance- nothing too crazy. They're doing what lots of folks are doing now with the clear wall to the kitchen so you can see what's being made. First try, will come back again.

Nice restaurant near UC Davis, walking distance from Yosemite dorm and Ulta.We are greeted by friendly staff and seated right away,Ordering is easy since they have the tablet in each table.Food is well prepared and delicious,we enjoyed the crab and pork xiaolong bao, steak is sliced very thin and well seasoned.Prices are reasonable and the food are shareable.

Another addition to the budding Davis Collection! I was fortunate to beat the dinner crowd on a Friday because both their parking and dine-in spaces are limited. You place your order yourself with the tablet at your table, and then pay your bill at the counter afterward. You can also grab water and ice tea yourself in the corner near the entrance. We ordered xiaolongbao, shaomai, beef rolls, wonton in chili oil, and the shrimp rice noodle. For a fast-causal restaurant, the food is decent, but nothing to write home about. The meal will fill you up, but leave you wanting for more. Might stop by for a quick meal when I'm craving dim sum but probably won't go out of my way.

Came here to try the new restaurants by TJs. We finally picked Baobao simply because of the menu variety. They have pork buns, dumplings, noodles, fried rice and the yummy ramen. We had the tonkotsu and black garlic ramen. It was so delicious and flavorful. The meat is so tender and the egg was cooked to perfection. The broth has the umami flavor. The pork buns as well as the red bean buns were also on point. The bun was so fluffy and cakey. The fillings were heavenly although I wished they had more fillings. Lumpia was divine! Very well seasoned. Vegetable Chow mein was savory. Did I mention the servings were VERY generous? Everything was served fresh. Jiang ( might misspelled her name) was so warm and friendly. She was attentive and patient with us. She answered all our questions and explained the dishes. The bao takes 15 minutes to prepare as they are made fresh. The other guy server was also nice and checked on us. Place is small but clean. Lots of people ordering take out. I highly recommend this place. I will be going back for more.

Din Tai Fung but much more affordable and, dare I say, tasty! I believe 88 Bao Bao might be the best dimsum place in Davis! The restaurant was packed and my boyfriend and I had to wait 15 minutes for a table. We ordered from a kiosk and our food took around 15 minutes to arrive. The wontons in chili oil were amazing. The fried rice could have used a bit more flavor but we just added their garlic and chili oil. The chasu pork buns were delicious!! The cucumber matched the pork very well and the buns were so soft and fluffy. Finally, the xiaolong bao is a staple- definitely can't go wrong with those. In total, we were very satisfied with such a filling meal. I find myself craving those pork buns.

I ordered 2 simple items for takeout, which they said would be ready around 8:20pm. On my way over, I received a call from the restaurant that they didn't have the noodle for the noodle dish I ordered, so I gave them the green light to substitute for a different rice noodle. The pickup time was now 8:35. When I arrived, it was bright out, the restaurant was loud, and the waiting area was standing room only. I ended up waiting so long that the sun set, the waiting area emptied, half the dining tables cleared, the NBA game ended, the kitchen closed, and staff started cleaning! The front desk person seemed concerned that my order wasn't ready so she checked on my order a couple times. She assured me the noodles were done and it was only the egg tarts that we were waiting for. (Maybe the hens were still hatching the eggs?!!) Considering I ordered online and even waited before driving over, it was ridiculous to still wait an hour for 2 items. I even watched people come in to get seated, order and eat during my time there. I was about to cancel my order to get a refund -- and forego eating dinner altogether because waiting so long there had made me lose my appetite. It seemed obvious there was a mess up somewhere because it was only my order that was not ready. But then someone brought out my bag. The food was honestly just okay. The egg tarts were a 7/10 and dry chow fun was a 4/10. The experience was a 0/10. I can't recommend it. It could've been a fluke experience but the manager could have handled it better. My order should have been comped for taking ONE HOUR longer than it was supposed to be ready.

Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. I went from a thin top to a medium weight sweater. We arrived in Davis I grabbed my jacket to pair with my sweater. Today was a day spent exploring Davis to see the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts (CCACA). What a great Conference. We come each year for this Conference and explore Davis every time we are here. After exploring the first building of the show it was coming on time to eat. We looked around the current shopping center and my husband didn't see anything he was craving. He said we'll go more into town and look for a noodle place. He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked.
