Some larger banquet tables have the spinning Lazy Susan to facilitate sharing food. Fujian Fried Rice was satisfying. It's fried rice topped with a gravy of diced mushrooms, green onion, chicken, and shrimp. I was surprised that the fried rice was yellow in color. The Braised Seafood With Tofu In Clay Pot was mostly braised soft tofu with a few shrimp, a few halved black shiitake mushrooms, some calamari, and bay scallops. Sauce was a bit too salty, but the leftovers were easy to adjust at home by adding water and eating with white rice. Tasty Kitchen is located in Downtown Davis on the corner of F St and 4th St. You will need to find street parking or a nearby parking lot. During my visit to Naya Dessert Cafe last month, I remember walking by this corner and thinking the food smelled super good. Since Farmer's Market parking was crazy, we decided to dine in here, party of 3, before attending an evening concert at the Mondavi Center. Hong Kong Milk Tea was a little watered down but came in a sealed boba cup even for dine-in. Hot tea pot also was good. The salt and pepper ribs were great, just the right amount of jalapeno. The general chicken was also the right amount of sweet and heat. The steamed fish with black bean sauce and veggies was also very good. Steamed rice on the side. It was Thanksgiving day and my husband had come with me to my weekly shift at the California Raptor Center. We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal. read more

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has passed and I am late on my reviews but after enjoying my nieces orchestra concert we had a family dinner at Tasty Kitchen! We were thoroughly surprised that we liked all the dishes we ordered! Just check-out my pictures and you'll see what I mean! We especially loved the orange chicken, the house special fried rice and the fried chicken wings! I'm a soup person and the broth for the wor wonton soup and the wontons themselves were so yummy 10/10 would recommend! On being seated, a teapot and cups were brought to our table. I tasted a sip of the tea and didn't bother with any more as it tasted like soap. I don't know if it was the variety of the tea, but I think not. I like most teas. After tasting liquid soap when I was in nursery school, I haven't liked soap. Due to dietary restrictions, there wasn't much on the menu for me to order. My friend from China recommended the Empress Chicken. She said it's boiled in a broth for a long time. When the waiter came to take our order, she ordered in Chinese. I ordered in English and he warned me that the Empress Chicken was served cold and recommended the Soy Sauce Chicken. I went with his recommendation. It apparently was a whole chicken thigh, but cut in pieces with shards of bone in each piece. It was hard to eat. It tasted fine but was difficult to eat and daintily remove the bones from my mouth. I guess I made a bad choice. The restaurant is rather large. There are tables and booths. Wow! I'm surprised I never wrote a review for this place after eating here a bajillion times during undergrad and occasionally coming back when passing by Davis, lol. So, I'd always eat some other beef dish offered here lol. For today, I got some sizzling beef with bell peppers. And of course, I can't remember the name. I thought the dish was okay, but a tad salty. The egg chow fun was okay too, but had an overwhelming taste of turmeric (I'm guessing it's turmeric because of the yellow tint), which threw me off. Shrimps were bouncy and had a good chew, and the egg gravy was nice and thick. I wished the noodles weren't so firm. Service was okay. You'll get a slight discount paying in cash! Is it bad to base my review entirely on one dish? Because this is one of the few restaurants I've been able to find outside of the Bay Area that has two sauce fried rice. My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. The egg flower soup at Tasty Kitchen Davis has been one of my all time favorite dishes for six years now. The batch I ordered today was so good that I figured I should leave a review. This soup comforts me like no other. I get it on a nearly biweekly basis. The fresh heirloom tomatoes and snap peas are always so tender, and the broth is never too salty, but still flavorful and nourishing. The egg is always the perfect texture. Eons ago this place was the Silver Dragon that we go to a lot. Now it is Tasty Kitchen and my first time trying this place. As soon as you walk in they sit you right away and give you hot tea. No extra cost for the tea. They take your order right away and the food comes out fast. Not a long wait. For my first visit, ordered the Salty Fish Chicken Fried Rice and half order of the Hand Shredded Chicken with Jellyfish, seventh in my chicken series trying different chicken dishes from different places. The hand shredded chicken is a cold dish but full of flavor and for me is the perfect accompaniment to the fried rice. I will definitely order the chicken dish again next time with family. The portions are generous that I had to take some home. The place is bright with glass windows throughout the restaurant. The service is great with them packing the leftovers for you. The waiter was fast and kind, and the work staff really gave off a family-vibe. The inside just felt homey. I remember visiting this old location back when it was Silver Dragon (RIP) but today was surprisingly my first trip to Tasty Kitchen after all these years. I arrived around 1 PM on a Saturday and found just a few other people inside. The restaurant was much cooler than outside's 100+ degree weather. Upon entering, I noticed a few staff members near the front of the restaurant, and one immediately greeted me. I asked for a table for one and he gave me a window seat near the front. I had looked at the menu online before but was pleasantly surprised to learn they have a lunch special menu available on the weekends - something a lot of Chinese restaurants don't offer and something I didn't see online. Considering this offered diverse and affordable options, I opted to go with the General Chicken lunch special, a side of egg rolls, and a Diet Coke to drink. The server came back within a few moments, took my order, and promptly brought back a Diet Coke with a straw. They also brought a kettle of tea while I was perusing the menu. I definitely appreciated the gesture, but with the hot weather, I didn't have more than a few sips of the hot tea. The food came out quickly and was piping hot. In usual style, I ate immediately and got a few extra hot bites in before I let it cool. That's how you know it's fresh! The egg rolls came as a set of four egg rolls, which were on the smaller side, and included a side of sweet chili sauce. They were fine but nothing too exciting - just an easy appetizer. I would try another appetizer next time, but what these had going for them were that they were the cheapest appetizer on the menu. Onto the lunch special! The menu didn't note what came with the special, but it was the entree + an order of white rice. There's nothing wrong with white rice but it would be nice if it was mentioned and there were perhaps options to upgrade to fried rice or chow mein. That said, the portions were plentiful and I definitely appreciated that for the price (only $9.50 - such a deal!) The General Chicken was tasty. Like the egg rolls, piping hot, so I needed to wait a bit to eat. It was extra saucy, which is always welcome, though I found it to be a little less on the spicy side and maybe sweeter than other iterations I've had. Not bad at all, though! I think General Chicken is one of those dishes that's up to the interpretation of the chef, too, so I think it's nice to get a little variety. I ate about half of entree and all of the egg rolls, and figured I could save the other half for later. One of the best employees noticed me and brought over a bill while another stopped over with a box. He scooped my meal into the box, closed it, and bagged it for me! Not used to that, but I have to commend the service here. While that was going on, another employee took my check and rang me up. Super fast and efficient service! It was a good visit and one to definitely consider for affordability - especially on weekends when places don't often have lunch specials. My bf went up to ask about our order and one of the employees had an attitude. He brought out our soup and didn't say anything else. Slowly our items came out one by one. Bbq pork over white rice - my bf's favorite. He said it was just as good as he remembered it when we ate here as students Hot and sour soup - a bit too sour for my liking. Tastes different from your typical hot and sour soup Yee fu noodles with leek - way too much sesame oil and tasted very greasy. Felt a little sick after eating a plate of the noodles. Food is okay but the customer service and wait time needs improvement. Also, Yelp check in for lemon iced tea is no longer accepted. Even after 4 years, I love knowing that I can come back and still order my favorite dishes from here. Food - sizzling steak cubes in honey: tastes just as great as it did 4 years ago! Comes on a sizzling stone plate, and the flavor is really packed into each bite. One maaaaajor grievance is that there was SO much fat; like some pieces were all fat and no meat that i felt like I ordered sizzling fat cubes with honey. (4/5) - hot and sour soup: I haven't had hot and sour soup this good since I was like 12!! I loved how thick the soup was, how genuinely hot it was, how genuinely sour it was, and how it wasn't mostly bamboo. Good portions of silken tofu (the best kind of tofu!!), the black mushroom(?), and thinly sliced bamboo. Great portion size for ~$10 (5/5) - shrimp chow fun (wet): alright ... so ... yes, I read the menu, and yes, I saw that it said there's two types: wet and dry. No, I didn't clarify that I wanted the dry chow fun because I wrongly assumed it would come dry. [insert noises of sadness here.] The chow fun noodle was okay, but the sauce was like thick egg flower soup dumped on some dry chow fun noodles. Bland, definitely not what I expected. Ate with the beef cubes, felt a little better. (NA/5 because that was my fault, so how can you rate something that you're just too uncultured to enjoy?)
