We have been eating at 88 Kitchen for years. (Mainly because it's the closest Chinese buffet.) Overall the food is good. I agree with one review about the humidity of the restaurant. That place is always like a jungle! And too often the restroom smells like the sewer is backed up. The hibachi is great though, lol. Sometimes though the meat can look a little on the old side and the shrimp can often can have a fishy taste. What prompted my review today though was the experience from our most recent visit. 88 has serve-yourself ice cream. You know the kind, that sits down in the cooler that you have to be in it up to your elbow to get any. On this trip, I got to watch as a child (about 5 or 6 y/o) grabbed the scoop, took some ice cream....lick the scoop...then put it back. This happened about 4 or 5 times. I watched in horror, until I finally went to whom I've always assumed is the owner/manager of the place. I told her what was happening. He was still doing it as she turned the corner and took the scoop away. I went back to my table in hopes that I would see her remove said container and bring out a fresh one. But no. The only response was to slice a few layers off the top (with that same scoop btw) and put the scoop back in it's holder. Of course after she walked away...the kid came back for seconds. read more

We there last night and had a horrible experience. This place is dirty and disgusting. First of all the bathrooms were dirty toilet full of feces and the papers the dispenser broken and NO wash soap. Second of all the customer service was horrible went almost the entire dinner with no service for drinks. Third roaches crawling on the floor too. Went to fix my second plate then in the corner of my eye I saw something running across the floor. I looked to see 3 roaches!! Never felt so disgusted! First and foremost I want to say that the first time we came here it was great, everyone was nice and courteous. However the second time we decided to come here it was an extremely disappointing experience. We came to eat here at around 11:30 am, they had just opened at 10 am so it wasn't very busy at all. We sat down to eat and the selection of the buffet itself didn't look very fresh which was strange because they had just opened. I was also confused seeing beef tacos on a chinese buffet. Well we gave it a chance anyway and that was a huge mistake! My husband got some sushi which is one of his favorite things to get and some fried chicken wings. The fish on the sushi was obviously old and not fresh because it was clearly dried along the edges, so dry like it had been sitting out a couple of days. One of the sashimi pieces that he ate he spit right back out and it almost made him gag because the fish didn't taste fresh. To top it off the chicken wings were not cooked properly either. My husband requested if they could make him some beef and broccoli being that they had none on the buffet and that's all he wanted after the sushi experience, well our waitress proceeded to tell us what was on the buffet is all they had available. Beef and peppers is not the same as beef with broccoli, she said she would ask but she knew they couldn't do it. My husband said forget about it, if it was that big of an issue. I would also like to add the lack of professionalism of the wait staff. It is incredibly rude and inappropriate to make racist remarks about people and their culture where customers can clearly hear what you are saying. Especially when you are the race that is being talked about. Very inappropriate! When the manager came to sit a table we explained to her everything that had happened and she proceeds to start yelling at us telling us that nobody ever complains about the food and maybe we just don't like it. I would have thought that being the manager she would be more understanding of the situation as well as professional. I was appalled at the behavior. I don't even want to give it 1 star. This is the worst place to eat that I can think of. The restaurant was so hot it was hard to eat. Most of the pans were empty. I was scared that I might get sick. Did try to ask about heat and was told that the Hot Bar puts off so much heat, the Air Conditioner could not keep up. Heart palpitations, dehydration, severe vomiting , fever, among other things. This was not funny in the least, I was deathly ill. Used to be ok, now it's terrible. Walked in tonight after checking dinner prices on their website. My first impression upon entering was an overwhelming smell of mothballs. My husband said maybe they had just put chemicals in the wall fountain so we got a table and sat down with our kids. Both he and I and a few of our kids had food that we set aside because it tasted a little off (an egg roll, several shrimp, a chicken leg, etc..). When our bill arrived it was a little more than twenty dollars higher than I expected based on their prices published on the website. When I questioned it, the cashier said that their prices had gone up; he showed me on a take out menu where the prices had been changed by hand; I noticed that the changed process were for adult dinners only, the kids prices had not been altered. I pointed out that we hadn't been given a menu and showed him the web prices but he just shrugged and offered me $5 off. He said he hadn't gotten around to changing all the prices yet and that he needed to call the website to have those prices changed, too. He also pointed out a sign at the register that started that a 12% tip would automatically be added to groups of 8 or more. The sign is easily overlooked on the way to the "please wait to be seated" area. As we were leaving, my kids pointed out that the "moat" area smelled like an outhouse; sure enough, it did. I was in love with this place when it first opened. And I admit they do have some of the better food. But it is hit and miss. Every time I go I know it is a gamble. Went with a friend on a Sunday took 2 small children. The only reason I mention this is because when we walked out the door to leave, we had homeless people who aggressively asked us for money. Mentioned we had nice clothes and car we could give a dollar to at least. Right at the front door! We felt uneasy and it will be the last time I go unless my son or husband is with me. It's a shame they allow that on there property. I would give money to a needy person usually. But this was one of those times I felt very nervous and knew better than to pull my wallet out. I'm searching for a new place to enjoy a Chinese Buffet and Koi has gone down hill so I guess I'll be going without. Horrible place. On a trip last week we had the pleasure of being served uncleaned,unpeeled fried shrimp. When we brought this to the attention of the manager they told us the shrimp are fine and that the shells are good for you to eat. Then they asked if we had found any bugs in our food. NO discount no anything except horrible food and worse service. I dont know what third world country they are from but they can have all the shrimp shells they want. I ate at 88 Kitchen yesterday 4-19-10 for lunch with about 30 church of Christ ministers. The food was good but it must have been very dirty. the health score was still 42. If only I had read these reviews first! If only I had looked at the score before eating. They have it posted but you probably won't see it until you're on your way out. I will not be eating there any more. I could serve a meal in an outhouse and get a better health score than 42! Don't let these people get away with this - it is disgusting. read more

Deserves lower than one star?? One of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. Most of the food trays were empty, what wasnt empty was hardened and dried to the pan. The staff was all sitting around eating dinner at their own tables, not helping the customers. To get something off the hibachi grill I had to disturb a latino man (yes the hibachi cook was latino, not asian) from his dinner and he wasnt happy about it at all. Finally sat down with some food and there was hair in the food from the hibachi grill. At that point I gave up and tried to speak with a manager but he wouldnt come talk to me directly, only spoke with me through the cashier, in asian, and told her to offer me 20 percent off. They are pushy about keeping the plates off the table and need to be a bit less aggressive in that area. During the check out process, the cashier just threw the receipts at me and turned her back to me as I was signing while on the phone and didn't acknowledge me during the process. My family and I have been to Kitchen 88 numerous times and each time it got worse! However, tonight was the final straw. The wait staff was worse than usual. They never came to give refills nor to clean the table of used plates; my daughter finally got up and placed the dirty dishes on one of the empty clean tables. It's amazing how fast they came and cleared that table. But the real icing on the cake were these kids who kept running around everyone's' booths and the food islands. When it was brought to the staff's attention (who saw it all), nothing was done ... even when they were told that these same kids were using their spoons to continuously eat out of the ice cream bins. After some patrons saw this, they asked for their tickets and left. Not once did management or the staff attempt to remove the bins that the kids had eaten out of. My family and I vowed that we'd NEVER come back to this restaurant again!! read more

Im giving it two stars to hope that this doesnt get filtered. Well, first off we went there during lunch and they were dead. with that said, most of the food had been sitting out for a while. the one item-peppered steak that was just put out was delicious, but everything else was horrible. most of the food was hard, overcooked, and looked hours old. the staff was typical of chinese places and i cant complain. It did kinda feel like i was in some sort of front store as all the people in here looked very ghetto. i had a coupon that i didnt know was expired since i just got it in the mail. they dont take american express, which is all i had, my girlfriend had to pay. the outside looks nice, but inside looks cheap and trashy. i work as a line cook in a major establishment and i understand that you dont want to just throw food out, but they do have hold times that need to be followed simply for safety. i didnt know about there health scores until after i ate there and i wouldnt have if i knew beforehand. where i work if you get less than 95, were all in trouble and quality control comes from the head department in orlando. just to help some people that dont know about asian buffets, koi is the best place i can say i have ever been. the outside looks old, but inside is amazing. the best food i have ever had other than my own, the staff is spot on, they sell beer-always a plus, and the selection is get this- bigger than 88. all there food is fresh and there is always a hibachi chef standing in position. there sushi, i dont even know what half of them are, but theres at least 50 different types. some reviews are from over a year ago for both of these places, i just felt the need to update them. read more

My husband and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED- yes, LOVED going there, but after the last time I'm not sure if we'll be back. The main reason we went was for the hibachi cook, my husband and I went to lunch there yesterday for lunch to find that they've replaced the regular cook. We decided to give the new cook a try, so we got our ingredients, and told him the sauces we wanted, my husband wanted the spicy sauce and teriyaki, but the cook decided to put soy sauce as well without saying anything to us, and I wanted a little bit of garlic and a lot of teriyaki sauce, well he put about a tablespoon of garlic and maybe a teaspoon of teriyaki sauce also added soy sauce to mine without saying anything as well and when we got to our table and started eating, we noticed that the meat was just enough cooked so as not to be raw but the vegetables were still practically raw, after that I didn't get anything from that part of the buffet, but my husband did, and told him specifically no soy sauce that he didnt like it, so the cook started arguing that e put it in the other and that my husband liked it. So, my husband began to tell him that no, he didnt like it, so the cook just decided to leave my husband's food to burn and not touch it, so the other guy had to finish it. We've never really had any issues going to this place, we always went here when we wanted Chinese food, but we won't be back unless they change this disrespectful cook who acts like he knows exactly what everyone likes. read more
