DISAPPOINTING FOOD AND WASTE OF MONEY. Unfortunately, this has not been an isolated experience. On numerous occasions, the food has been poor quality, including chicken that was so tough and overcooked that it was difficult to chew. I kept returning, thinking perhaps I had just been over critical or caught them on a bad night. However, the food I received last night was simply unacceptable and should never had served. The Crab Rangoon was extremely dark, almost burnt, and so hard that it was nearly impossible to chew. 1 star. Absolutely disgusting experience at China Star. The food was bad enough on its own. The chicken had a weird spongy texture and tasted awful. Neither my wife nor I could enjoy our meal. What completely ruined the experience was watching an employee handle our yum yum sauce. She stuck her bare finger directly into the sauce while filling the container. No gloves. After contaminating it, she still attempted to give it to us and asked if we wanted it anyway. I don't care if hands were washed afterward--the finger was already in the food. The fact that anyone thought it was acceptable to serve it after that is beyond me. Basic food safety and sanitation should not be optional. Watching an employee put their finger into food that is about to be handed to a customer is something I never expected to see in a restaurant. We have seen this place go through several people operating it over the last 10 or so years. The original people who ran it when we came to the area were probably the best of the lot. In reality, I have no idea how or why the health department has not closed this place. Having been involved in the food service industry in years past, I am pretty fussy about food handling. Storage, prep space, cooking & holding temps. This place has been far short of minimum. On one occasion we stopped in to grab a lunch special, this was when we learned the woman with the young child was no longer there. From the front counter we could see into the kitchen, where they had a large pile of raw chicken on the table they were taking from to make up assorted dishes in different woks. It was a hot day and there were flies in the place there is no way I could trust the food coming out of this place, we did not order food and have never been back. I really think the town & county should work on trying to get some new food establishments & grocery into the area. We have a massive lack of eateries, especially in regarding variety. Between Ashland City & Pleasant View (Cheatham County), there is probably over 2 dozen Mexican restaurants, but only 3 that were reasonably good, only 1 considered to be close to authentic. We have 2 bar & grills, a few chain pizza shops and a few bad attempts at a pizza shop here and a potentialy good choice aside from the weird hours they are open, the usual fast food offenders, Hardees, Burger King, McDonald's, we did just recently see a Waffle House open. We have an old H.G. Hill (they did a partial remodel about 2yrs ago), an old Food Lion, and a really old Save-A-Lot grocery store... There are a couple of saving graces... New to town and while we were unpacking we decided to grab some Chinese. This was the place closest to us. My husband's go to is always general tso. I went with crab Rangoon and pork lo mein. My husband didn't like the general tso. He said the one back home was better. I tried a bite of his. It was ok but nothing memorable. The crab Rangoon tasted stale. It wasn't good. Flavor was weird. Probably the worst I've ever had. Didn't realize how bad it could be. The lo mein looked like it would be delicious but it was pretty bland and lacking any kind of flavor. It was kind of dry. After 15 years or more eating here we are done. Quality has gone way down and I honestly don't trust the food. The broccoli was not trimmed to as it used to be, there was a lot of stalk. But, the thing that made us say never again was the crab Rangoon bin have never tasted anything like it. It was grease soaked, overdone, the cream cheese was bitter, salty and grainy. I was so hungry today and all I kept thinking about is Chinese food. I passed many Chinese places coming from Clarksville to get to Pegram. I've tried this food before and it was just okay, but today, it was fantastic. I knew that they opened at 10:30 today and it was around 10:40 when I try to open the door and it's locked. But the OPEN sign was on, so I called and they answered. I ordered the hibachi egg fried rice that came w/an egg roll. Today my egg roll was perfect! My rice was delicious and not overly salty. But the man who was running things, he unlocked the door several times(he turned the key, but it never unlocked until the 3rd time) not realizing it wasn't unlocking. Hey we all make mistakes. The portions were large. The food was good. Price was easy on the wallet. Didn't give a full five stars only because the tables and chairs inside could use replacing. Going to step up on a soap box for a second. I have enjoyed the food in China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Middle East, Mexico as well as most of the US. This would include $200 a plate venues to (my personal favorites) street vendors using newspapers and cardboard to cook the food. Honestly there isn't as much variance in the quality of the food as one would think. Folks need to consider the big picture here. This is a tiny town far from the big city restaurants and prices. No award winning restauranteurs are going to relocate from their fancy expensive Nashville venue to serve the refined palates of Ashland City, Tennessee. They would be out of business from locals complaining about the prices or exotic foods that does not catch on. Consider this: Someone from another country has taken a huge risk with what ever cash they have and decided to try to make it in this small town. They don't look like you or hardly speak much of the language, but put their hearts into their work and investment. There is something to be admired here. Ok, getting down from my soap box, taking a breather :) The lady at the front is NOT rude, just speaks little English outside what is takes to take an order of food. She will not usually sit around and have small talk with you, she is very busy. The people in the surrounding businesses should take note of her hustle and work ethic. They make the food fresh and hot in front of you, sometimes making you wait 15-20 minutes. It is usually piping-hot and pretty darn tasty. Now to ME, this is a welcome change over the standard Chinese buffet chains with boringly safe selections that litter Nashville. This is a tiny store from with 2-3 tables l, primarily meant to be a take-out restaurant. Hint: Don't bring your family to sit and eat here, there probably won't be a place to sit. The portions are quite large, and you will not leave hungry. The prices are average if not somewhat cheap actually. Do not hesitate to walk in order food, watch the magic of them flipping around the steaming ingredients while hearing them yell and argue in their native tongues. This restaurant was one of two Chinese places in the area. I usually got food from the other one because it was closer. Now the other place has closed and that left this place the only game in town for Chinese food. We have always gotten food here carry out. They do have a small dining room but I have never seen folks eating here so I would guess most of their business is carry out. Of the 3-4 times we have gotten food here it has always been good. They have also been in business for a at least 12 years so they must do well. I have a friend that has gotten food from China Stars and always had good things to say about the place. It is not my favorite Chinese restaurant in the greater Nashville area but it is better than most. I am sure my wife and I will continue to get food from here. If you have not tried the place be sure to. We have eaten about 7-8 different menu items and so far the Hot & Sour Soup was very good and the Generally Tso's Chicken was pretty good as well. I would guess this is a family business as the folks running the place and working here are all Chinese and we really don't have many Chinese residents in Ashland City. Consider this for take-out only, the ambiance in the small space is not conducive to enjoying food. In February the small space is cold, loud, and badly lit with cold fluorescents. No question it's real Chinese, at least cooked by real Chinese - all conversation behind the counter is clearly (loudly) Chinese. I sampled the egg rolls, fried dumplings, and hot & sour soup. The fried dumplings were excellent and it was a big order I think there were 10 in there with a nice sauce. Very satisfying. The eggroll was... edible. Not great but not awful. I ate it but I wasn't smiling. The hot and sour soup was just plain awful. I order hot and sour soup everywhere and it's hard to mess it up but this stuff was just gelatinous and flavorless. One spoonful and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it. If I had to put a name to the flavor, let me see... it would be lima bean. Yes, bland pasty lima beans. If you happen to look at some of these reviews and see only 1 star, those reviewers are either just spoiled brats, or they only gave New China Stars one chance to serve them. I've lived here nearly 15 years and I like to think that I am a connoisseur of Americanized Chinese food. When my family moved here I was disappointed that I had to leave my home in Ohio because in Findlay they had one of the best Chinese places I'd ever known, oddly enough called "New China". I did not think I would ever find another great place to eat like that one. But thank God I have and it is New China Stars!! You cannot ask for a more friendly crew serving you. It is obvious they love their work. The food is great here, NOT disgusting and bland like I've read in a few other reviews. Usually when you are the only place in town, quality tends to suffer. BUT NOT HERE!!! My favorite things to eat here are the Chicken and Mixed Veggies. I like the breaded chicken they serve here and every time I've asked, they have replaced the chicken they normally serve with this item with the breaded chicken you normally get with Sweet and Sour...and with a SMILE to boot. Other items I enjoy are the Orange Chicken, General Tsos, and the Spare Ribs. Give New China Stars a chance. Ordered from here a couple times and it's been ok. I decided to try something different from my usual order and ordered Kung Pao Chicken. Based on my previous orders which were passable, i decided to try their Kung Pao chicken which is a personal favorite. Being the only Chinese restaurant in the area I was really hoping to be impressed.. I LOVE Chinese and got it about once a week before I moved out here. The food here is honestly disgusting or bland, depending on what you order.. I'm very disappointed because I could live off general tsos, orange chicken, and crab Rangoon but this place can't do any of that right. Honestly, the best Chinese we've had in and around Nashville. The lunch specials provide a lot of food at a good price: $6.00. The fried rice has nice texture and flavor. The General Tso chicken was fresh and hot. The flavor developed into a well-rounded flavor once it cooled down. The egg rolls actually tasted good and weren't over powered by five spice so you could actually taste the filling inside. The Mongolian beef rivals any quality Mongolian beef we've had any place else so be sure to try it. We're glad we finally stopped in to check it out. We will definitely be back! read more

Pretty good tasting Chinese food, basic menu items. Their lunch special is a good portion size with an egg roll and a soda for less than $6 each, really good value. It isn't anything fancy, and I tried not to pay attention to how dingy and dirty everything was. Had it been more presentable and cleaner, might have given 5 stars. This used to be a pretty decent restaurant. About a year or so back it changed hands. Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, the change was not for the better. Many of their meals have gone down hill. Sometimes it seems like what they charge doesn't add up to their menu. Of course, I could be mistaken. When I called to tell them about a poor experience I had with a meal I purchased, their attitude was just rather ambivalent. Horrible food!! This used to be a really good Chinese Takeout place....had heard it changed hands and now the food is really bad. The crab Rangoon was so salty and the filling was so nasty could not eat past the one. The dumplings were wet and soggy and the Lo mein very salty. How sad that this was once a thriving family-owned restaurant is now a really awful pit. Telling everyone to buy take out in Nashville before coming home to Ashland City.
