Nestled within the five story functionalist utopia of Germantown's bland buildings, one thing breaks through the cookie cutter nature of the area. That, of course, is some solid Chinese food. This Germantown location of Steam Boys is the first one to have opened in 2019, kicking off this small group of restaurants into high gear. The group of five friends who traveled through China to find the best recipes established this much needed establishment to introduce Nashville to proper Chinese food. Dishes like soup dumplings and seafood noodle soup are all around solid. The noodle soup is quite flavorful and the seafood I tasted quite fresh. The soup dumplings aren't necessarily to rave for, but still solid. Staff are accommodating and easy to interact with. Steam Boys is delicious! I tried the Pan Seared Pork & Shrimp Dumplings, Cucumber Salad, and the Strawberry Milk Tea. We arrived around 6 to an empty restaurant. Although the atmosphere is fast casual, we were directed to sit down and received table service. The dumplings arrived quickly and were perfectly crispy. I would have enjoyed a wider variety of dipping options, but the provided sauce was a good pairing. read more

Ok so I just got late to this party so yeah, ready it with my fresh and excited belly eyes, k? K! Wow! This is delicious. There jk, but seriously, everything they have it's good. You can't go wrong at all. I believe the $3.50 extra to have the boa seared is not really worth it. Have it for sure but have them steamed 1st so you can see the real difference. The Hot dumplings bowl is great but it's the later killer so enjoy it at the moment (evil laugh). For the location, this location is as usual around town, parking sucks but they do have paid parking and some free parallel parking for those who can. I also ordered the Xiao long bao (soup dumplings) (4*). They were actually under-seasoned and almost bland. I appreciate the work that went 8th them to make, but they needed more flavor. Once I added a sauce, they were good. Service was good. They were helpful, friendly, and mostly fast. Remember the soup dumplings take at least 15 minutes. So be aware. read more

Took myself on a solo date here and I loved it. My favorite thing I got were the pork and shrimp dumplings. They were flavorful, warm and comforting. I also got the steamed bao and the seared bao. I personally liked the seared bao better as they were a better size to eat. The steamed bao were pretty big and mostly dough so I didn't get to finish it. Parking can be hard to find here, there are some street spaces but the spaces nearby are pay to park with PMC. Server was nice and because I was there by myself and not a lot of people were there I was able to get my food fairly quickly. read more

HOT AND STEAMY | no one would think to find soup dumplings in Nashville, Tennessee of all cities - so I was pretty excited to find them at Steam Boys while I was craving them. I had low expectations so I wasn't super disappointed with what we got. $9.50 for 5 steamed soup dumplings is a bit steep (especially when I ordered them in 2022...) but overall they aren't bad. They're individually steamed in mini foil tins, which is kind a nice touch since it catches any stray soup leaks. The hot dumpling bowl wasn't as spicy as I would have hoped but it did hit the spot. The Juicy Pork Seared Baos were ok but not memorable. Everything was a-ok. I actually did stop by another location again this year for just the soup dumplings - while they're not the best I've ever had, they do satisfy the craving! read more

Steam Boys was alright. I had this for lunch. The food takes a little while to come out, so you have to wait around a bit which doesn't really fit the food hall vibes of the place. I got steamed pork (1), seared beef (2), and pork&shrimp dumplings. The steamed pork was great, but the seared beef wasn't that interesting. The dumplings were also just alright. Admittedly, I've never been to their restaurant. But-they did cater an event at my building and I've got to say these are some of the best dumplings I've ever had outside of Asia. Flavorful, perfect texture, great mouth feel (important with dumplings-not too mushy, not too doughy). They're American sized (HUGE) and the flavor is incredible. I was full with two. I'll definitely be checking out their restaurant as soon as I can. If the storefront is anything like their food, I can't wait. So good! So tasty! read more

I had a Ramen bowl, which was a sodium kick in the gut. My son had dumplings which looked very good. I think that's the route I would go next time. Again service is limited because they take your order and that's about it. I don't think they are used to having people sit in the restaurant as most of the food seems to go through Uber eats. It's a pretty cool hangout spot. We had to pay for parking since we couldn't find any street parking for this spot, but the pay for parking wasn't a far walk at all. It was my first time here, but you pretty much just take a seat if you're going to dine in, or walk up to the counter if you want to place a to go order. The tech time wasn't bad at all. The pork and shrimp boiled dumplings wasn't bad, but I liked the pan seared ones better. The soup dumplings wasn't bad, either... but kind of questionable since the meat inside those ones were kind of still pink. We still ate them, though and was fine lol. Those pretty much had the soup inside the dumpling. I really liked the sauce for my boiled and pan seared dumplings. a they did pretty good on their sauce for that. Service was pretty good, too. Before flying home my friends and I stopped by Steam Boys for a quick lunch. Surprisingly it was quite empty for a Monday. We ordered the following to share. Seafood Noodles (medium): Spicy! I usual can handle the heat but this was actually too spicy for me that mad me cough quite a bit. There was a good amount of seafood but the noodles were way to soft for my liking. Juicy Pork Steam Bao: We wanted the seared one but accidentally order the regular. It was juicy but nothing special. Pan Seared Pork and Shrimp Dumpling: Ohhh! These were SO good! So juicy, flavorful and tasty! These were 5/5 for me. XLB: Not enough soup and they were stuck to the aluminum tins. Would pass on these. Hot Dumpling Bowl: The sauce was ok, it was spicy but didn't stand out. Overall, the food was decent. Service was fast! We were very excited to try this place. I have traveled a lot across Asia (Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc) so I consider myself fairly familiar with Asian cuisine. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the customer service. The place was empty shortly after the primary lunch period. We weren't acknowledged when we walked in. Having never been here before, we were unfamiliar with the menu and process. The cashier came off as annoyed we were there, zero personality. We ordered and the food came out and just wasn't good. Between the four of us we ordered 4 items and we all shared. Everything was disappointing. Seemed to be overlooked or way to spicy. Just not impressed at all. Nice interior decor, I guess. We had a great meal! Our favorite was the chicken and cabbage dumpling. The soup dumplings were also fantastic but we wish they offered a version without pork. Cucumber salad was delish but hard to share since it's one long spiral. The other dumpling we had was amazing too- a chili oil one with a high heart level. Not terrible but could use some work. I was really looking forward to the bao bun but it was more bun than meat. I prefer the meat ground so you can take the sauce in the bao bun, but that's just preference. The meatball had good flavor but some sauce would've been better. I didn't think I was going to be the biggest fan for the beef bao but it ended up being my favorite item we ordered. I will say that the food arrives super oily. To be honest, I don't think I've ever had Chinese dumplings except on a buffet, way back when Chinese buffets were a thing. The closest thing I've had to them is the Korean version, called mandoo. So when my coworker asked me to go, I had him answer 20 questions of what they were, what he thought of them, and how delicious they were. It wasn't until I arrived at Steam Boys that I recognized the place (he didn't know it was Steam Boys, he just called it "a Chinese dumpling place"). I've heard of the name before, maybe in passing but I never thought to go there. The menu is really simple. They have an assortment of bao (buns) and dumplings. The bao are bigger and come in 1-2 pieces. Dumplings come anywhere from 7-8. You can get them steamed or seared. There is also a soup dumpling on the menu. If you're not feeling it, you can get a noodle bowl. I opted for the seared juicy pork bao and steamed pork and cabbage dumplings. The pork used in both is the same (signature pork). Both come with dipping sauces (the seared bao had a Sriracha-like sauce and the steamed had a soy sauce-based sauce). Both dumplings were really good and tasted similar but I personally prefer the steamed version better than seared. The steamed version just tastes "lighter" but honestly, it was the filling that makes the dish. Savory, earthy, and chock full of that delicious pork flavor, I wish I had gotten more... And that's why this review gives Steam Boys 3 stars. Those 2 dishes combined cost me $15.75. That's really expensive for leaving me so hungry, I was thinking what could I eat as a snack to fill me up. For a weekday lunch, you can get the same 2 dishes as a lunch combo for $13.95. Still though, it's too expensive for what you get. There is a promotion on Tuesday that has all you can eat dumplings, but I'm not sure what the fine print is. I'd really have to be craving dumplings to come back any other day than Tuesday for the AYCE. Otherwise, it's way too expensive. It's too bad, because the dumplings are amazing. read more

Went to the Germantown location for dinner and it was pretty dead, though it seemed maybe their take out was popular. After parking 3 blocks away, it was very confusing for us first-timers if we were supposed to seat ourselves, wait to be seated, or order at the counter - took the staff a while to help us figure it out. Once we were seated, the server was really friendly and helpful. We tried a black tea with boba that was delicious! For food, we got a seared bao that was yummy, then soup dumplings which were fine and the beef noodle soup which was so bland we couldn't even finish it. The front half of the dining room was being used for storage - massive boxes of toilet paper and paper towels were stacked up by our table which didn't feel very professional. Not really the ambiance we wanted for a date night, but if you prefer a really casual vibe at a reasonable price point this is your place. read more
