tl;dr Super legit…read morecabane a sucre experience! --- We actually mainly came here because we couldn't get a spot for Au Pied de Cochon's sugaring season, but wow! this place is super legit! Being dumb foreigners (Americans), we had no idea that we only need to travel about half a day's drive north from NYC to experience true culture shock. This establishment serves a traditional cabane a sucre meal (extravagant Quebecois shared meal in the winter heavy on meats). They have a mini hiking path actually behind the establishment, so since we were a bit early for the reservation we opted to take a little hike on the snowy path, which was actually pretty fun. It leads to a hill where there is a small shack displaying the giant cauldron that they used in the past to boil maple syrup. Now sufficiently hungry post-hike, we headed back down to the restaurant. What was quite surprising (or maybe just to us?) is that this place is actually very well populated with locals. We literally counted perhaps two tables during the whole evening (within our range of vision) who appeared to be tourists. To be honest, we haven't ventured many times in our travels to Montreal outside of city limits, so it was quite surprising to find that most of the waitstaff have trouble speaking English. Our original waitress, upon realizing that we actually parler anglais, had to scramble and find her colleague who could speak English to be our waiter for the night. Hey, it's totally cool and I wish this kind of language diversity existed in the US!! The meal itself was super filling in the cabane tradition. They have three tiers of pricing (basically with increasing amounts of courses). We opted for the highest tier just because we are tourists lol and it came with enough food to feed a family of 4 (as expected). Packed about 3 aluminum containers at the end of the night, but we tried our best to finish the salad and all the vegetables to make up for the copious amount of meat haha. Great selection of locally-pressed ciders to accompany the meal. They'll give you the check for you to pay at the register (which is quite typical at these cabanes we realized...), located in a gift shop area in the middle of the store where you can also buy things like local maple syrup. After paying, we realized that there were a lot of people hiking to a shack in the back and that there was actually a line out the door. Since we weren't sure what the line was for, we just got in line and realized that they were making tire sur la neige (maple taffy on snow!!). Quite literally there's a snow trench where they pour boiled maple syrup onto -- the syrup congeals into taffy upon hitting the ice, and then you can roll it onto a stick as a sticky candy. Super cool!! Definitely don't miss this -- the locals were very amused to see we were so excited by the experience. Overall, a very fun (and filling!) cultural dinner! Highly recommended. We usually end up there sometime between 11am and 1pm on a weekend day and naturally there is always a line (and the parking lot gets busy). Fortunately they started using a buzzer system to alert you when your order is ready, but be prepared to wait, longer than you would think for a fast food-type place along the side of the highway (usually 10-15 minutes). I suppose if you think of it more as a very casual restaurant (with no waiter service...), then the wait time is more acceptable. Though I usually get some all dressed steamies (classic steamed hot dog and bun, dressed with relish, mustard, onions/cabbage coleslaw) and a classic poutine (both excellent - the poutine is made using thick cut fries, doused in gravy, but with a good ratio of curds to fries), they have a number of other menu items, including a bevy of homemade desserts. The last time I was there, I decided to try their lasagna, which was part of a daily special that came with a drink, soup, and dessert. I chose the vegetable soup - full of veggies, hearty and tasty. The lasagna was actually amazing - loaded with so much melted browned cheese, served pipping hot with garlic bread on the side. Homemade meat sauce inside and I am pretty sure there was pepperoni scattered on the top, right under the cheese... and you can see in my photo that there was some green peppers on it - the effect was kind of like eating an all dressed pizza lasagna. I loved it. I chose a square of homemade carrot cake for the dessert, and fortunately they let me take it to go, but then I promptly left it on the table, oops. I like that there is a lot of seating outside, as well as a small playground - a great rest stop for kids. Cleanliness of bathrooms inside is hit and miss - women's one is usually fine, but not the men's. Cash or debit only, no credit. Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for some classic Québecois fast food!

The food came out pretty quickly but it looked like it took longer to cook because of how fresh it all looked and smelled! The goat salad was delicious! The right amount of everything. The escargot was also delicious and very cheesy. I've had escargot several times but this was probably my favorite version. The french onion soup was also good as well and the green onion was a nice addition. Brigitte was an excellent host. She made sure we were able to access an English menu, changed the tv for us, and accommodated our every need, including finding a bag for our to go when she found out we were walking. 10/10 recommend!

I ordered garlic butter spaghetti and was not really a fan. This is not really on them, it is more me realizing I am not a fan of this type of spaghetti. I think other people at my table had their own complaints with the food such as the spaghetti being thinner than they expected. Or that one person ordered lasagna and it had pepperoni in it. They thought it was strange that anything outside of pizza has pepperoni. I didn't bat an eye for what was in it but felt it should be included.

While their dessert flip through menu serves up false hope. Started with French onion soup that oozed with cheese on the top and and even at the bottom of the soup. Not bad, but the onions weren't caramelized so the soup didn't have much depth. I ordered the spaghetti meatballs (12.50) and it was basically the super sized version of those canned Chef Boyardee pasta meals from the texture of the meatballs to the texture of the spaghetti. The house spaghetti (12.25) included spaghetti with mushrooms, peppers, and pepperoni in their meat sauce, which I think my fellow diners got a better meal. We shared the cream fudge cake which is vanilla cake with cream fudge, glaze, toffee, and a cream puff. The description and picture sounded and looked divine. Much to my disappointment the cake wasn't as pretty, overly sweet (this is coming from someone who loves desserts and sweets) and the cream puff was very sad. Service was aggressive in French but played off in good humor. Booth seating inside the restaurant and table seating in what I would call the patio area.

Happened upon it thanks to recommendations from our awesome CM Risa (who told Mariko, who told me, who told... U get the picture) because it happens to be right in primo hiking and camping territory right off the highway (117-N). (Like literally RIGHT off the highway: SLAM ON YOUR BREAKS! OH NO, YOU MISSED IT! OH MAN, HAFTA GO BACK AROUND! ...and it is SO worth it, so do go back around if you miss it lol.) This seems to be a little family run spot. Son is definitely the best at providing friendly, sweet service, Dad's not terrible but not super bubbly or anything and Mom ...well she's a weird one, but it seems like once she recognizes you service becomes sweet and very attentive all of the sudden, so bonus points when you come often! And luckily the food is just so damn good that finding excuses to come back is really not an issue. Price is quite expensive for a little road side truck stop, but the quality and love put into this food makes it worth every penny spent so I can't even remove a star for that. There's one tiny bathroom which is not ideal, but does the trick. There's outdoor seating and 'indoor seating' (screened in dining area). And also a kyoot space for kids to play (swing set). This place is quiet at the beginning of the season, but gets busier as summer goes along. We were always in and out within 10-15 minutes, though.
