Second time here, pizza is excellent (although mine wasn't very hot). But like last time, service is terrible. I would give 1 star or less for service. Just two of us this time tucked back in by the wall. We couldn't get water refills, no bread brought to our table (all tables around had a basket), wanted cracked pepper, couldn't get attention of any server and gave up. Then when we had to leave I absolutely could not get the servers attention to get the check. I swear they avoid you when they are busy and don't want to turn the table over. I got up to put my jacket on and he finally had to connect with us. It still took forever to get out of there. Similar to other reviews, while the food was okay, the price was very high for what we got. We ordered delivery and all four containers had been placed sideways into two bags, which were left on our porch with the bags completely open. All the sauces had of course drained out into the bag. When I called to inquire, spoke to two people, including one who identified as the owner's daughter. Neither offered anything near an apology for the experience. Both kept insisting the bags were carefully packed and the edges securely closed and delivered right side up, and that the driver must have turned all the food containers on their sides! Believe it or not, there are people who actually know what and how the taste, texture and making of these "wood" fired pizzas are supposed to be. I am one and I certify myself as such based on my culinary knowledge, traveling to Italy/Europe and my many years spent here doing "pizza crawls" throughout Brooklyn, NYC and the boros, to most of the places known for their great pizzas. I've done the so called "best" of pizza in regular, brick oven, coal oven, wood fired, all that runs the good to great pizza gamut. I can tell you each type is similar in some of characteristics to the end result. Epic fail to any pizza making and pizza maker, is when these places stick a pizza inside of an oven that is just NOT HOT ENOUGH degree wise, and there is going to be a true quality and texture issue if not cooked at the right temperatures from start to finish. Much of it is the same concept of placing food into a fryer of oil that is not hot enough temperature wise, the end results are immediately evident in appearance and taste and texture. In pizza, a thin crust (which all of these pizza styles are) should NEVER be soft and doughy which will produce a lacking, floppy pizza when you pick up your slice. This is the FIRST and clear indication of temperature in the oven issue. Undercooked cheese, not fully melted, is the second indication. After that, you can judge ingredient tastes of the sauce, typically crushed plum tomatoes are used, then varies, where a sauce tastes better than another, i.e. one sweeter, one not, one seasoned, one bland, and is since many do not add any seasoning to a sauce to excite it, which can be as simple as a dash of salt, pepper and garlic powder. San Marzano plum tomatoes (sauce) are the norm for these pizzas and if not, you're getting shortchanged as well. This place charges $12 for a 12 inch pie, well, they'd better be using those. First visit and very disappointed by it and will never return as a result. Lost a new customer you could've gained. This place simply failed on all points and I'll predict they won't be in business for that long, in that location, paying that rent, for that space, just for people who enjoy the allure of dining outdoors with BYOB. That can't make the food taste better in my opinion, or maybe a bottle of wine helps you to think it is. So with the pizza ratings both my friend and I give based on our visit there (and how I've read many other reviews stating their entrees were not good and over priced) I think this place is very deficient in their approach to pizza making and/or it is being done and run that way. I will say I didn't see any presence of a person working there over 25 yrs old, where I do assume a restaurant manager would be not such a very young guy, who is all we saw working there during our visit. Who runs the place I wondered? Wait staff were missing for periods of time and the place isn't that big, nor was it that busy. I will say when food and (service) is lackluster consistently, as is here, there will be soon down the road issues. Reading other reviews of this new place, the service was also a featured complaint, besides the pizza and food quality and price point for it. Not hard to see the trend downwards has already started and continues to head down fast. Note that the place only opened earlier in 2015. They need a new approach to things there and train your staff to care and show it and make a pizza right. They need to have someone truly experienced in it to come in and show how to make the proper" wood fired pizza and one in an oven that is truly 900 degrees!! When we left, we noted the fire inside the oven was SO small where we laughed and said that could in no way even be a 900 degree fire! Save your time and money. I can honestly say, compared to this place, I get better and (crispy) pizza from my local pizzeria for much less money and a much bigger pie. Wow. read more

We were so looking forward to trying this restaurant since we heard so many good things. We went for the first time this evening and we quite disappointed. Our appetizer (Mozzarella In Carrozza) was not cooked through. When we said something the waiter looked at us and walked away. There was no apology and it appeared he told the owner and he didn't even come over to our table. Our entree's were tasty, but very over priced and the portions were far from generous considering the price. The service was average and the visual atmosphere was very pleasant. We went here the first week it opened. We were excites to try this new local restaurant. There were 5 of us and we went for lunch. There was no other table when we went in (one or two other tables showed up). We ordered 2 of the pizzas, one was pepperoni and the other was their funghi pizza. They were ok.. nothing special and for being there at lunch they were definitely over-priced. Very small for how much they cost. We also ordered the Ceasar salad app. And that was very good. Also, they allegedly have gluten free pizza (that was not available when we went but it was on the menu). The major issue that I have with this is, if you truly cannot have gluten do not order this pizza. They cook it in the same brick oven as the others. So there is co-mingling. We ordered a few other items. But nothing that was a major WOW...and for being that it was lunch it cost us over $100 (with tip)...I know people think that just because this is Towaco, prices should be higher...but that's insane! I've been dining here for years now and I've never been disappointed. Each time I order something different, rotating between pizzas and entrees, and whatever I order becomes my new favorite menu item. It's just all delicious. The service has also always been positive for me. The servers are friendly and they make an effort to have a conversation with you instead of simply taking the orders, the food comes out quickly, and any modification I've requested has been correct. I've been here a few times now, and very happy to have proper wood oven pizza close by in Montville. The pizza here tasty and is pretty close to authentic Neapolitan style. This means a few things: 1. They are personal size. 2. They are well done and will have some blackened char spots on them. This is part of what makes them tasty. 3. They use real mozzarella cheese and not the industrial grated cheese that comes in 50 pound bags. If you are going in expecting something similar to the typical NJ pizzeria, or something from a nationwide chain (shame on you), you might be disappointed. This is a step up and more like a nice meal. I still get pizza from the local takeout when I want something quick and cheap on a Friday after work, but I go here when I want something better. I've only really had the pizza so I can't comment on the entrees. I'm a bit of a purist so I only get the margherita, but I've tasted a few others and they were good. I did have a bread pudding for dessert the other day which was fantastic. The only grumble I have is that when they first opened they would sprinkle the pizza with a little bit of grainy sea salt which was really tasty. This seems to have stopped. read more

Have been here at least once a week since this place has opened. The owner and wait staff recognize us and make us feel welcome every time. This is not your typical pizza joint. You can't order by the slice, but you won't be disappointed by their gourmet pies. It's a BYO and a desperate need for this town that does not have quality restaurants. Went with another person, we byob so i can't comment on the drinks or prices. I did ask for ice and it was clean and cold, if that helps. Ordered the calamari, which I thought had the right amount of crispness. We also shared the house salad. This was delicious. Kinda wished I hadn't shared it. We went with the pizza with fried eggplant. I am not a fan of eggplant but this tasted good. I like brick oven pizza so this was right down my alley. The service was great. The waiter came over a few times and was responsive to our needs. My only issue was that we ate outside, which does have a nice atmosphere and there is some nice music playing. My issue was there were bugs, that like to bite, they didn't go after our food, they went after our legs. My date had several welts on her legs and I did as well. They didn't show up until the pizza came out so thankfully we weren't too taken back. When we first noticed that a pizza place was coming to Towaco we were excited. Having lived there since 1970 and not having a local pizzeria was something new to the area! The first day it opened we stopped to order a pizza. To our surprise there pizza is 12" personal pizza's. Since we are big eaters I knew 1 would not be enough. We ordered a Margherita with chicken and a New Yorker. Both were good but we were disappointed with the toppings. Love the concept of the wood fired pizza but we are traditional pizza eaters. Being originally from the east coast I love broccoli rabe, and living on the west coast I never get to eat it. I saw the pie on the menu and that was the reason we tried the restaurant. What a disappointment. The broccoli rabe pizza was flavorless. The broccoli rabe tasted like nothing, the sausage tasted like nothing, and combined on the ricotta the whole pizza tasted like nothing. Surprising the margherita was quite tasty. Essentially I ordered it as the safest bet for my daughter. She didn't like it, but she doesn't like anything, but I did. I recently stopped in for a quick meal and wow was I impressed. The food came out quick, hot and was absolutely fantastic. I've had other really great Neapolitan like pizza before but this place is hands down the best I've had thus far. You can really tell they're serious about their emphasis on fresh natural ingredients. It should be obvious from the upscale atmosphere in the restaurant that the food your getting will be equally upscale in both quality and taste. The service was great as well. The staff was friendly, attentive and quick. Upscale and quick normally don't go hand in hand but 900 and the staff really nail this concept down. Bravo. First time there. Excellent caprese salad. Very good fried calamari, excellent marinara sauce. The pizza is the real deal. They use 00 Caputo flour making such a tender light and delicious crust. Margherita with mozzarella di buffala was outstanding, only wish there was a little more basil on the pie, but outstanding nonetheless. The New Yorker pizza was absolutely delicious and scrumptious. The server was very friendly and attentive, and the owner very personable. The only changes I would recommend is for the calamari to be dusted instead of breaded. Very good pizza, with top notch ingredients. The staff was very nice and receptive to suggestions the only fault we found is that the crust needed another minute which they took to heart and were very appreciative of the suggestion. I have had a dinner and 2 times pizza short rib pizza and shrimp scampi pizza and have absolutely loved everything I have eaten. We turned up within half hour and were given a not warm welcome, told there were people ahead of us waiting and it would be 20 mins.
