I had been meaning to give the Columbia Inn in Montville a try for a while since friends of mine mentioned that pizza aficionado Dave Portnoy had awarded their exceptional thin crust pizza an 8.7 back in 2020. Even though my usual dining companion and I don't enjoy pizza - due to my lactose intolerance (more on that later) - we finally stopped in for dinner on a recent Saturday night. The restaurant occupies a historic building built in the 1870s that once served as Montville town hall and later became a tavern and inn catering to travelers making their way through northern New Jersey along US Route 202 and the Morris Canal. Today, the Columbia Inn offers diners a great neighborhood pub atmosphere with a lively bar scene and an adjacent dining room that can accommodate larger parties in a casual, family-friendly dining experience. Overall, our food was terrific. My dining companion really enjoyed her St. Peter's fish ($28), a flaky white fish topped with minced garlic, diced tomato with arugula, and a light tomato sauce alongside mashed potatoes and mashed carrots. I ordered the Chicken Scarpariello ($28) -- a very robust sauté of chicken, Italian sausage, and sweet and spicy peppers in a bold, tangy white wine and vinegar sauce -- also served with the mashed potatoes and mashed carrots. Both of us thought our entreés were genuinely delicious. However, we hit a plot twist. Navigating an Italian menu with lactose intolerance is already an extreme sport, but the description of the Scarpariello in the menu looked totally safe. Enter a creative sous chef, who apparently likes to improvise a little off-script. A few bites in, I realized my chicken was secretly wearing a cozy blanket of melted cheese hidden just underneath the sauce. I strive to be the lowest-maintenance diner on the planet and will happily eat around almost anything (while deferring my criticism to a Yelp review) to avoid sending a plate back to the kitchen. I was fully prepared to operationally pick off the cheese and soldier on, but our server, Yuri, caught my look of mild betrayal and swooped in like an absolute hero. He refused to let me suffer through a cheese-scraping mission, insisted on taking my dish back to the kitchen, and had a fresh, dairy-free version out to me in record time and offered his sincere apologies for the snafu. Major credit to Yuri for handling it like a total rockstar. I'm deducting half a star for the stealth cheese surprise and rounding down to 4 stars, but thanks to Yuri's legendary service and the fantastic food, we had a great night and will definitely be back! PRO TIP: The chef seems to enjoy freelancing and dishes may be served with slight variations from the menu descriptions. This has the potential to cause problems for people with food allergies -- so be sure to make your server aware of any specific requests when ordering. read more

Long time coming. Finally tried the Columbia Inn for dinner. My original game plan was to order a pizza with a side of muscles but my wife had other ideas. She wasn't feelin pizza and went with the Schiaffone Bolognese which was on the specials menu. The pasta was a little overcooked. The sauce was meaty but it was on the left side of bland. It could have used some heat. Overall it was just alright. I ended up going for Polo Parmigiana. It was pretty much what one would expect to get from the corner pizzeria. The chicken cutlets were a bit too thin which made them a little dry. Not terrible, but I expected a little better. The plate was dressed up with two dollops of mashed potatoes. White and sweet. Our server was very attentive especially given that the place was jammed to capacity. The main dining area is pleasant and homey. I will more than likely dine at the Columbia Inn again soon to try the pizza. Stay tuned. read more

I came here on a Tuesday with a friend for half off pizza and it was a slight disappointment than my previous visits. Their thin crust pizza is a staple here and so delicious but this time we were here, the pizza was really burnt. It wasn't just ours. Most of the pizza we saw for people around the bar were burnt. Columbia Inn is a great family restaurant to share a meal with your loved ones. I liked the aesthetic of the restaurant and they have plenty of parking. They serve thin crush pizza and Italian food. I came here last night to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were seated in a long table to accommodate my friend's large group of friends. The service was fantastic and attentive. It was a busy Saturday night dinner time but my large group of friends and I were still well taken care of. We were a large group of friends (18 people). We all ordered different food options. About half of us ordered pizza. I tried the grandma hot honey pizza and it was delicious. I also ordered the fresh mozzarella hot appetizer it was supposed to be like the fried mozzarella sticks but in my opinion it wasn't like a mozzarella stick. They were still yummy but it didn't have the bread crumb bread that I am used to seeing in mozzarella sticks. I ordered myself a cocktail and their small bites of pita chips and bread were fresh. We also bought an ice cream cake to eat together as a group and the restaurant took care of slicing the cake and passing it out to my friends and I. 10/10 Italian restaurant recommendation in Montville, NJ. read more

Situated on Route 202, the road George Washington traveled on his way to Morristown, it became an ideal location for an inn once the Morris Canal was constructed in the late 1800's. We're regulars at Columbia's bar and keep coming back for the exceptional service. Every bartender here is attentive, professional, and engaged--a refreshing change from the typical bar experience where staff are often distracted by their phones or each other. They notice when new guests arrive and make everyone feel welcome. The thin crust pizza is consistently excellent and never disappoints. However, the kitchen's execution on other dishes can be hit-or-miss. We've had the penne vodka range from outstanding--rich and perfectly seasoned--to disappointing with a bland, watery sauce. The salads are generally reliable and well-prepared. If the kitchen could match the bar staff's consistency, this would easily be a five-star establishment. The outstanding service and great pizza keep us coming back, but we're hoping for more reliability across the full menu. read more

Once again, Barstool's One Bite Pizza Reviews have led me to another local pizza spot. Columbia Inn is a small bar/restaurant off one of Montville's main roads. We were seated quickly and given menus. I was here for pizza. I got a plain cheese pie and the shrimp scampi pie. Both were super thin. I could have easily eaten either pie completely on my own. The cheese pie was saucy, with the cheese well toasted. The shrimp scampi pie reminded me of a white pizza, except with shrimp. Great pizza overall Pizza score: 8.9 read more

Called at 6pm on a Saturday for a last minute reservation and they were able to seat us outside at 6:45 which was very nice. The outdoor covered patio area is so pretty with a lot of beautiful flowers. Service was fast and very friendly and our waiter Bobby was great.
