As a large group we were disappointed in this place. For a large group ordering is a mess. Bc there's just one sheet of paper and food is just plopped on the table and servers don't tell us what it is. The nine of us were really disappointed in this meal. As our sliced meats came almost an hour after our soups served. And veggies basically came 5 min before that. Half our meal was missing sliced meats and veggies. We ordered mussels clams and oysters and we never saw any of it despite complaining. We ended up getting the oysters very last about 1.5 hours into our meal. Requests to refill waters was ignored and for 9 of us only 7 water provided! It was really weird service and maybe bc it was a large group they didn't care bc they automatically add the tip to the bill. I'll avoid this place. Service and portions have gone significantly down and the entire experience was ruined based on how the food was served. There shouldn't be such a long wait in-between meat/veggies and seafood. Me and my wife used to go here a lot, it used to be her favourite place till last night when we didn't have good service and I didn't tip because of that so one of the young workers there decided to come up and start making a huge deal about me not tipping and was talking crap about me and my wife. The reason I know that is because I had my phone on translate and when I walked out they were talking about my wife in their language calling her names and more. This is a great place for newbies to go for hotpot. It is clean, and the staff are really good at explaining on how the menu works and what the protocal is for hot pot. They also kept checking on us and seeing that our water glasses are full. The other thing that I like about this place is that each person gets individaul pots so there is no need to argue with your spouse on which one to try. Basically you pick a broth (some are plain Jane and some are super spicy) and then you pick which things you would like to cook in your broth. Keep in mind it is not all you can eat, so these prices can sneak up if you get greedy and order a bunch of things. I find myself, that 2 meats, one dumpling or tofu and one veggie is enough. Full disclosure: My experience with hot pot has been minimal up to this point. I've been a handful of times but somehow never felt as if I'd really gotten into it. So when I decided to visit 97 Hot Pot I was feeling admittedly intimidated and as if I would surely be "doing it wrong." But how else can we learn if we don't try? Hot pot is of Chinese origins where a literal "hot pot" of flavourful broth is brought to a boil and left simmering for the duration of the meal. Raw ingredients, such as meat and vegetables, are placed into the simmering broth and cooked. It's actually very similar to the Swiss concept of fondue. When 97 Hot Pot appeared on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list as a Favourite Comfort Food, I knew that it was time for me to finally dig into this beloved cuisine. 97 Hot Pot is located on 97th Street in Chinatown (the name is not a coincidence) in McCauley. It's hard to miss the distinctive signage with red stripes and yellow lettering right on the corner. Inside, the large open dining room is filled with rows and rows of tables - the dining capacity is huge. The most notable aspect of the space is that each and every table is outfitted with a heating element at every seat. These special tables facilitate the entire hot pot experience. The walls are mint green and there are some cute Chinese decorations here and there. The menu is extensive and can feel overwhelming, with many different sections of food and seemingly one hundred options. To add to this, there is also a piece of paper and a pen on each table which is to be used to mark down your selections. This part is actually quite fun! The food is considered all-you-can-eat and for $32.95 you are free to feast until your heart is content for a maximum of two hours. The appetizer section (which isn't hot pot) is also included in this price - if you want to order 12 spring rolls, you can. I feel that this is actually quite an amazing deal given the absolute multitude of options. However, to avoid food wastage you will be charged extra if you order a ton of food that you don't intend to eat. The first thing to figure out is your soup base. This decision is key because the broth is the most important part of the entire meal. Each person gets to pick their own, because again, each person has their very own element right in front of them. There are at least 15 types to choose from, from Chinese herbal, to thousand egg and tofu, to aweto blossom. (I didn't know what half of these were either.) I decided to go for the Tom Yum Kung ($2.00 extra) because I enjoy a bit of spice. Although the Szechuan Spicy Chicken was a near second. It took no time at all before the bubbling pots of broth arrived and were placed on the elements before us. The pots are sunken into the table which makes it easier to avoid touching hot surfaces. Each person also has a small control panel to manage the heat in their pot - turning it up to 5 results in a hard rolling boil, while a 2 or 3 seemed to maintain a nice amount of simmer. I liked that each person gets to choose their own broth and it's not a sharing situation for everyone at the table - not everyone has the same tastes! On the other hand, the entire experience felt extremely communal and sharing a meal like this with others seemed to play a major role in the overall feast. It didn't take me long to notice that the menu has marked some of the items as "chef's recommendations." As someone who didn't exactly know what I was doing, I used this as a helpful guide. My general rule of thumb is to order at least one item from each section. The menu includes; meat & poultry, fresh meat and seafood mash, seafood, tofu & noodles, meatballs, and vegetables. As I mentioned earlier, there are cold plates, appetizers, and dessert as well but I personally didn't see how I would have any extra room to eat any of those things. We went though the entire menu (which took some time!) and checked off each of the items that appealed to us on our piece of paper. We ordered at least 25 different items. Our server took our paper away and the chorus of food items began to arrive in no time at all. A trolley cart was placed at the end of our table to house the extra plates that there wasn't any room for. Another aspect of note is that there is a sauce bar at the back of the room that must be visited. Here, you are able to fill little trays with various sauces and toppings which you can use with the rest of your meal. I loaded up on chopped peanuts, OX sauce, sesame sauce, and sriracha. Where to begin??! Well. It all begins and ends with the broth. As with all Asian broth-based soups, the broth is king. The broth is where the magic happens. I'm not sure why I would have expected any less, but the Tom Yum Kung broth was an absolute dream. Big, bold depth of flavour with the perfect amount of heat. I tried hot pot years ago and this was our first time trying it again! I appreciated how helpful and kind the servers were. Excellent explanations and help as we needed it! The restaurant is clean and comfortable. I love that each seat has their own hot pot station. We brought my son and his bestie. We tried a number of things and that was so fun. I like ordering a bit at a time. Reading previous reviews we were cautious in amounts we ordered but for us, we could have ordered more initially. However you can always get more so no big deal! We came in on a Friday night so it was busy!! Everyone was working hard but we did have to wait for a lot of things and it seemed like there was a mix up with broths and who had what at tables. They are comparable to the other hot pot competitors and their prices are on the lower end. Food is what is expected at a typical hot pot restaurant. A good selection of broths and items to choose from. I would recommend to order at least some of these items if you've never tried hot pot before: sliced lamb, sliced beef, sliced pork belly, baby bok choy and fish mash. They wont disappoint. If you want a lot of veggies, pick the assorted veggie item. It gives you a gigantic amount of veggies. They have a lunch special of 6 items for $18 dollars that's a good deal. If you are ordering noodles I would recommend you split one order between two people as they come in huge portions. My husband told me his curry was a bit too spicy but that's his own fault as he ordered curry when he can't handle spice. Decided to try out 97 Hot Pot to celebrate my 9 year old niece's birthday this past weekend thanks to the lovely recommendations of fellow Yelpers! This was my second go at Hot Pot and most definitely a success! The staff here were friendly, helpful, and totally patient with us. Glad we made our rather large group reservation for 5pm because by 6pm the restaurant was packed! It really was delicious and everyone in the family found items they loved and all agreed they would most definitely come back again. Highlights for me include the squid (cook it less than a minute or it will be rubbery), pork wontons (with chili oil and garlic), and the mussels! Next time, I'm totally going to try some of the mashems but we were STUFFED. Kids loved the long plain donuts that are good to then dip in sugar. The sauce bar had tons of options though I would like crushed peanuts or a fairly plain peanut sauce as an option. I love the sides available on the dinner menu - the kim chi, the pickled veggies (to die for - carrots and a white veg), seaweed salad, Hmm... I could go for a big bowl right now! 97 Hot Pot is easy to spot. Just look for the red and yellow bright sign. I've only been once previously for dinner ($26.95/person) but enjoyed it thoroughly. The fam jam wanted something different to eat so I suggested we go for hot pot. Best of all, it's only $11.95/person for lunch! The interior is clean with white on white on white (walls/flooring) and super soft chairs for you to eat in comfort. The place was really busy for a Sunday afternoon and there was even a small lineup throughout our meal. Guess the lunch deal is just too good to miss. The menu is straightforward. Front page is hot pot and back page is pho/other noodle soups (WHAAAAAT?) How it works. Pick your soup base (5 options), entrees/dishes (25 options) which include a variety of sliced meat, handmade mashes, balls, dumplings and noodles and lastly, you get a nice mixed bowl of vegetables. I had no clue 97 Hot Pot had pho and BBH but several people were ordering them. Now I'm curious how they stack up? I'll never know though. Why come to a hot pot place for anything other than hot pot? Step 1. Pick soup broth. I went with the tom yum kung, which was slightly spicy. My sis's looked spicier (Szechuan spicy chicken). Step 2. Pick 5 dishes. I went with sliced chicken, Korean squid tentacles, pork wontons and sliced pork. I also picked Chinese lai fun noodles but my sis's glass noodles looked better. Oh well, there's always next time. Step 3. Mixed vegetable bowl. A nice variety of brocolli, enoki mushroom, corn, tomato, carrot, green cabbage and some other Asian greens. Nice. Step 4. Eat. We were stuffed by the time we finished all of our food. This is how hot pot should be. Five items is the perfect amount to fill you up without over stuffing yourself (a la AYCE dinner style). Even at 730 when we left, it was still fairly empty. My guess, Liuyishou down the street. This is an AYCE hot pot, so make sure to bring your appetite! We tried half/half broth. I had the curry/chicken, and my husband had mushroom/chicken. I found the mushroom broth to be the best. The meat and veggie selections were great, but we didn't get everything we ordered and had to get it with the next order. For me, I found the sauce station to be lacking. I visited 97 Hot Pot earlier this week with a mild hangover in tow. A friend and I had hoped to go to another place in Chinatown for lunch, but it was closed, so no grease for us. Neither of us had tried 97 Hot Pot before, and we admitted to each other we'd been avoiding it somewhat because we thought it would just be soup. Oh, how wrong we were! We needed a bit of hand holding, this being our first time at a hot pot restaurant, but we quickly got the swing of things. First, you pick a soup base (friend got regular chicken, and I got the nice and spicy Sichuan chicken). Second, you pick five items to add to it (this is at lunch; at dinner, it's all you can eat, with a ton more offerings and a heftier price tag). You simply fill out your sheet of paper with your choices and give it to the server. While you're waiting for them to assemble your order in the back, you hop up and get condiments from a well-stocked sauce bar (mutual favourites were the chive sauce, the sesame sauce, and the ginger sauce). Since you do the cooking at the table, everything is brought out raw (and in some cases, frozen). And boy, was it quick. My soup base had real spices and chilies floating in it, and I would have happily eaten it on its own because it was so delicious. I also got sliced chicken, meat and cabbage dumplings, pork wontons, shrimp, and udon noodles--and veggies like enoki and button mushrooms, broccoli, and cabbage come without you even having to order them. I had a blast cooking everything right at the table, and when you run low on cooking liquid, a staff member with a pitcher will top you off with some more! By the time I left, I was stuffed to the gills and had completely forgotten I was hungover. Edmonton's on the cusp of Spring, but on days like today where there's still snow on the ground, I crave something warm and filling. What better way to curb those cravings than hot pot! 97 Hot Pot is the newest individual-style hot pot in our central Chinatown. Other competitors, Asian Express Hot Pot (the original individual hot pot go-to place) and Urban Shabu (owned by Urban China) are within walking distance, so what makes 97 Hot Pot different? I got a chance to find out with my coworkers last week... all 18 of us. Makes hot pot all the more exciting when you have such a large group of people! With 12 different soup bases to choose from, it matches Urban Shabu's selections. As with the other hot pots, the soup bases cost an additional $2, unless you get the plain chicken broth, which is free. You can also try two soup bases with a half-half divider for an additional $2 as well! Menu items are listed also listed on the laminated spread, although your traditional order by quantity paper is also available to order from. Your sauces and toppings are located on the back wall, all nicely labelled. I liked the fact that a lot of the liquid sauces were in bottles versus bowls or containers like other places. Soy sauce is in the gigantic tap dispenser which was clever. I honestly think the key to good hot pot is your sauce mixture, especially if you choose the plain chicken broth like I usually do! My mixture of choice: oyster sauce, sesame sauce, red chili, garlic, cilantro, green onions, and soy sauce until the consistency is looser for dipping. Ever since I've mastered this, I've never tried anything else! Lots of items to order from, and remember it's all you can eat! There's a small sign at each table with buttons that you can ring for service. Meat plates come with 5 slices, which takes the guess work out of how many plates to order. Unlike other places, our orders came out correctly, albeit some were slight delays but that was probably because there were 18 of us. It seemed to be general consensus that the quality of meat cuts were a lot better than both Asian Express Hot Pot and Urban Shabu. I always love seafood mashes, a housemade mash that you can portion out into your soup to make balls! The only downside: the ventilation. Much like Asian Express, the ventilation is minimal and is evident on their windows, thick with condensation! Remember to wear your hot pot clothes and don't make plans after dinner! Head home and shower! Service was excellent and the space is quite large with room to move around tables. It's like having fondue but you cook your food with soup and not oil and there is a two-hour time limit. We arrived on a Sunday night around 5:45 and the place was full except two tables. Each diner gets their own "hot pot" of chicken broth unless you want a different type of broth such as tom yum, you may need to pay an extra $2. Then you go through the large menu selection and mark off what you want. We've never been here before so it was hard to know how much you get for "1" or "2" so we just winged it. There were different types of meat like sliced lamb, beef, pork, meatballs, seafood, chinese vegetables, tofu, wontons and noodles. They also had cooked food choices such as green onion cake and spring rolls which were delicious. They have a "sauce-making" station where there are different items to make your own sauce like soy sauce, hoisin sauce, fish sauce, minced garlic, chopped green onion, chili oil, etc. Lots of staff are working so they come around quickly to clear any empty plates and refill your broth. For such a popular restaurant I expected to see dozens of raving reviews! Anyway, I had never been to a hot pot restaurant until I came here a couple nights ago with my boyfriend. I wasn't sure what to expect. Basically, you create your own pot of soup on the table top! There are a dozen broths to choose from! I chose ginseng chicken broth (cost extra) while my boyfriend had regular chicken broth (free). There is a list of ingredients you choose from that can be added to your hot pot- numerous vegetables, seafood, meats and noodles. And you can add as much as you want! For our appetizers we had green onion cake, Chinese donut, Vietnamese egg rolls, pickled vegetables, spicy cucumbers and seaweed salad! I can't remember all the ingredients I put in my soup, but it was the bomb diggity since I got to choose what went in it! This place is so delicious and fun... the selection of broths and meats are amazing. I am a big fan now of going with a basic broth (chicken or coconut) and using the condiment bar to flavour my broth to my liking with ginger, garlic, cilantro, hot peppers and chilli sauce. The slower process of cooking your food in your hot pot makes for a fun, social meal experience. The all you can eat dinner is a lot of food...for beginners the lunch specials is less than half the price and more than enough food... 5 meat/ dumpling/ noodle choices and a large bowl of vegetables is more than enough to fill you up. 97 Hot Pot is definitely one of my favourite spots in Edmonton! read more

I was pretty impressed with this place. The reviews are very good, but having had hot pot several times I figure it might be too good to be true and it's a matter of Edmonton having very few hot pot places. The place wasn't insanely busy at around 6pm on a Wednesday, and it never really reached the point of busy-ness the 2 hours I was here. I also like the fact the hot pots are individual, as it prevents different broth flavours from spilling to the other side. I had the mushroom and truffle broth, which was very good. Items I ordered included sirloin beef, ground pork, squid mash, cuttlefish, octopus, cuttlefish balls, beef balls, lobster balls, golden mushrooms, and beef tripe. I really liked every single one of them, especially the sirloin beef and squid mash. I would probably have ordered more of the mashes if I was still hungry. Service could be better in terms of not missing orders, as more than once we had to reorder some of our items. We also had to call someone over consistently to refill our broths. As with most hotpot places this is always a super fun style of eating. It's a really social way to have dinner and takes a while from start to finish so don't plan to be somewhere straight after. This place has a massive range of vegetables and meats to add to your pot, and unlimited broth refills. They have a few vegan soup varieties and lots of vegetarian proteins if you are that way inclined. If you are a meat eater there are plenty of options there too and obviously it's unlimited as to how much you can order for the one price. Been here for lunch twice and it's great food and price! For $11.95, I got to choose from 5 broths, 5 items, and a big bowl of vegetables. The broths are chicken, egg & tofu, tom yum, spicy chicken, and a mushroom one. The 5 items are quite varied including fish filet, fish balls, shrimp, mussels, thinly sliced pork, chicken, or beef, tofu, udon, rice, or vermicelli noodles, rice, wontons, and more. There aren't too many cooked items and no sliced lamb (although you can order it and pay extra) to choose for the lunch items, so likely more for dinner. After I filled out my order on the paper, they brought out the bowl of vegetables. I like the variety with lettuce, one big carrot, mushrooms, broccoli, and piece of corn on the cob. The first time they also gave me a quarter of a tomato but not the second time. While we waited for the rest of our food, we went to mix our concoction of sauces. They do a pretty good to keep the sauces filled but the last time the bowl of cilantro was empty. Soy sauce must be a popular choice as they have a large dispenser for it. I like how there's a great selection including soy, oyster, sesame, XO, and chili sauces. The tofu broth came out quickly and each person got their own pot which is great. The temperature controls are just under the table top and easy to control and work well. I turned it up to 3 on the control and my broth was boiling in little time. The broth had a few pieces of tofu in it. The meats, seafood, and noodles arrived soon after. They gave me a bowl of noodles and I was impressed at the portion size. I ordered fish, tofu, chicken, and shrimp. I cooked a handful of noodles and mixed in the other food and vegetables. With the sauce, it tasted delicious. Came here for a friend's birthday. It wasn't too bad but they didn't have peanut sauce . The plates are smaller when you order the meat as well. Otherwise not bad. Soup bases cost money $2 unless you choose their generic chicken one . read more

I'd give this place a 5-star rating for food quality, taste variety, staff attentiveness....all except for their prices. The food's fabulous, and the hot pot genre is wonderfully social and slow-foodey, but we were quite surprised at the $30 tab per adult, plus an extra couple of bucks if you want a soup base other than standard chicken. The price makes it maybe a twice-a-year event with friends, but not a weekly or even monthly family experience. The owners must make a killing! read more

I had previously written a review for 97 hot pot however most recently had discovered that their lunch special had increased in price. Also, item size had decreased and service had become minimal - hence the decrease from 4/5 to 3/5. Overall I still love hot pot though! read more

All around excellent experience! Very interactive and delicious meal. I came here not knowing what I was getting myself into....and I am definitely glad I decided to try hot pot. I came here with a group of friends. We reserved a table but it seemed unnecessary. We went around 6 pm on a Friday and the restaurant wasn't busy until at least 730 pm. The staff were very helpful with explaining how hot pot worked, since we all seemed perplexed. You choose a base broth and what you would like to cook in the broth. The options are staggering. Everything from fish balls, to sweet potatoes to eggs are available. You then need to head up to a seasoning station and grab whatever you think will enhance your broth. After a short while your sever brings the uncooked food and then you cook the food as you please. Be aware that they provide you with an ample amount of whatever you order and you can ask for more.....so don't order every second thing on the menu (a mistake my whole party made which lead to us drown in plates of food). read more

We have tried 3 different hot pot restaurants lately but always return here. While their evening menu seems a bit expensive (we've never gone), their lunchtime menu is very satisfying. The reason we return here instead of the others is: 1) The choice of broths 2) The vegetables are included and are always fresh, crisp, and a good variety 3) They have a very good selection of "soup" items, and condiments.
