A group of us went in the other day, and WOW! Our server / waitress Shea I think her name was I hope I am right, really made the meal spectacular from start to finish! She was not only hilarious and personable, but extremely attentive and made sure our meals were perfect and our cups were always full. She brought our meals out and gave each person their plate they ordered and was very attentive. We joked about pretending we were at home and she was our server and she was cooking. I used to be a waitress back in the day and she is great at pre bussing and making sure everything is nice and tidy. We didn't want to leave so we ordered dessert! The warm greeting and friendly service are everything at this verrrry dark and dated outpost, one of a large nationwide restaurant chain that's heavily concentrated in the Northeast. We ordered a couple of appetizers which both came out of a freezer and the world's sweetest Mango iced tea that stopped being refreshing after the second sip ("May I have some water, please?") Everyone was super friendly. Lots of regulars. I had the Carnitas Mac and Cheese and it was perfect. Carnitas had great flavor, cheesy, and the macaroni wasn't mushy. BBQ sauce is cheap and too sweet as well, no smoke. . Not nearly enough cheese on the Nachos and the fresh guacamole the menu claims is frozen not to mention there is no fresh cilantro....also listed on the menu. A sprinkle of tomatoes and jalapeños was a joke as well. Worst Nachos ever. There was once upon a time when low quality and low cost chains had a niche customer, but are fading fast with this one leading the way. The food has steadily gone down hill in the last several years and now I have to steer my food selections to avoid the things that are awful. I have always loved the 99 however the experience I just had in portsmouth nh was more than disappointing. the manager charged my card three times and refused to remove the additional charges. she was aggressive in her approach , basically chasing me to my car and did not explain the situation what so ever which was a issue with their card reader. the waiter was a sweet kid who looked honestly upset over the error. it easily could have been resolved with a less aggressive approach, disappointing. read more

Our server was great but the haddock I was served was under cooked. it was sent back to cook longer but came back still raw. putting fish under a heat lamp doesn't cook it! Couldn't eat the fish and was still charged for the full meal. Very disappointing and the lack of a manager attention was concerning. read more

The food and service is as expected for this type of restaurant. I was pleased with their COVID-19 safety measures in place. The restaurant didn't feel over crowded and the same server came to our table for all things (manager didn't come by, same person serves us our food, etc-- only one staff member interacted for this visit). Sometimes people enjoy having a manager check on the table or someone else may bring the meal when it's ready but in these times I feel it's important to have one server and minimize the number of people interacting, so this was appreciated. The restroom has a capacity limit sign and had plenty of soap and paper towels. I hate to write this on a one-time experience but dinner tonight was horrible. My daughter took me out for a birthday dinner . We sat there for almost an hour before we even got our meal. I ordered the short rib tacos with a side of rice, the rice was absolutely disgusting. I told the waitress I can make a soft ball and stick it to the wall and she says oh sorry. Had dinner this past Sunday. After waiting for about 25 minutes to be seated, we were stunned to see so many empty booths when we were brought in - perhaps they were short of help. Our waitress was very friendly, but for some odd reason, never wrote any of our orders down in a pad. Needless to say, some were screwed up and some items were missing when she brought them out. She did the right thing by not charging us for one of the meals (thank you!). My mother and I went to the 99 last night for dinner and the service was ridiculously slow. She ordered the Pub-Steak sandwich and was not told that there was no Au Jous sauce. This is the only reason she orders this sandwich and would have ordered something else. When they brought the food out the server told us that it was the waitresses first night and that there was nothing they could do about the sandwich. We weren't really convinced it was her first night but this still isn't an excuse. We asked the waitress for a refill of our drinks and after 20 minutes we had to ask the server and then it still took much longer. The waitress also kept talking to me like a kid even though I paid for the meal. It's like she assumed my mom was going to be paying. She judged me by my appearance. My grandfather was in the restaurant business for years and actually helped design the original concept for the 99 restaurant. This is part of why we like going there as it reminds us of him. We won't be going back to the 99 anytime soon because of this experience. read more

Coming through town and stopped in to get something to eat in my motel. After getting to hotel, find there was nothing to eat with. Called the restaurant to complain and got a response of "you didn't ask for any. Then she says "ok, what would you want me to do"? I asked to speak to the manager and was put on hold. 8 or 9 minutes later, they hung up the phone. Corporate WILL hear from me. Next day went to the restaurant and spoke to the manager. My family and I Walked in and sat down immediately, my waiter was Andrew, he was probably my favorite part of the entire dinner. He was very quick on his feet and made sure we had everything we needed, he was very sweet & genuine, thank you Andrew! The food was amazing! For and app we shared was the buffalo chicken dip, it was beyond delicious! I couldn't stop snacking, haha. Which made me super full, so when it came time for the all-star burger i ordered, I could only eat a few bites! (I saved it for lunch the next day). I also subbed the fries with mashed potatoes and the coleslaw with steamed carrots, I was more than pleased. My stepmom got a free desert with her meal and she asked for key lime, which they were unfortunately out of, however they were happy to substitute it with vanilla ice cream even though it wasn't on the list of free deserts that came with her meal (which she asked for). Wow. Terry was an awesome server. He was prompt with food, refills and to go bags. We never had to ask for anything. Service was professional and courteous. Food was surprising good. Not a fan of this restaurant but I had absolutely nothing to complain about this time. Fabulous job all around. Food was timed perfectly and made to order. The jumpin crab soup was spicy and had lots of crab. Very flavorful. The balsamic grilled chicken Was very large. 2 breasts grilled to perfection and the sides were tasty. The peanut butter petite was a nice finish to a good meal. We're not local, but used to be. So, when we are in the area, we try to stop here to eat, because they have, historically, provided good, quality food. They are consistently good. Unfortunately, they removed some of our favorite items from the menu, but this forced us to try new items. They still have the best honey mustard EVER! I wish I could take a bucket home with me. When I was growing up the 99 became a staple in family dining. When you didn't want pizza or friendly's, you went to the 99. An iconic memory filled with laughter and good times with my family. I don't live in the area anymore so I really miss the 99. After a recent trip back to NH, my dad wanted to take me out to eat to somewhere "nicer". Remembering how much we used to love the 99 I suggested we try there. We didn't have to wait as we had missed the Friday night rush. Our server was Megan and she was fantastic. I had the grilled turkey tips, bacon Gouda Mac n cheese and carrots (I love a restaurant that serves just carrots!). My dad ordered a steak. Our meals were hot, fresh tasting and delicious. Everything we loved about the 99 still stands. I don't think I have ever had a bad meal here. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are great. Yummy yummy yummy. From out of town and saw this chain everywhere so we decided to give it a try. They give free popcorn as soon as you're seated. My food was pretty darn good, sautéed shrimp with rice and bell peppers. Shrimp weren't overcooked. Nicely portioned food. And service was pretty fast. They seem to stay crowded however we had no wait. Would definitely return! read more

We go here every week for the prime rib, soooo yummy and mostly always cooked perfectly. Kyle is a great waiter, very friendly, we always know we'll get taken care of when we have him. This picture of the Turkey tips is very deceiving! I was recently at the 99 in Portsmouth, NH with friends. Their meals were good. Mine was not. I usually get the Turkey tips with sides. So instead of deciding on something different, I knew that it would be a good choice. It was not. I usually get about 8 tips and it is a take home. There were 2 skewers which was new. The amount of turkey on each skewer equaled about 2 usual tips. It was dry and sliver of pieces. The sides were good. I would not recommend this until you see it served at a table and can be guaranteed that it is going to be a worthwhile meal. read more

food was good until i saw a bug in my nieces food. her and her mom shared a plate of steak, chicken, and mashed potatoes. a little before halfway finished she noticed a bug crawling on her food. and a dead one in her honey mustard. my niece is 8 months old and had been crying until the food came to the table. she now had the food taken because we weren't gonna feed her that food after seeing bugs alive and dead in it. the manager did take that meal off our tab and gave us $15 dollar gift card. but it shows that the kitchen clearly isn't clean. it wasn't the waitresses fault so we apologized for even having to talk to her manager and still tipped but i wouldn't ever go here again. i will say for mine and my boyfriends food it was good. he got the buffalo chicken wrap and i got the 8 OZ sirloin steak. the only fault with mine is it was made well done instead of medium rare. but considering how overcooked it was it was still good and fairly juicy so i can't complain too much read more

Always been a fan of the nines. The Portsmouth location is nice. Could be a little cleaner...maybe even updated a little. The place always seems to have a good crowd without being too busy. The bartenders are decent although they could be a little friendlier. All in all, it's decent. read more
