Come foe the drinks, maybe a snack, but come during the warmer months, as I'm sure the patio opens up and it's a much better scene. Wait staff could be a bit more engaging. I felt like messages were being sent to me to visit here. The night before, at dinner at a nearby restaurant with local friends, one of them was drinking a Liar's Bench beer which he let me sample. It wasn't my preferred type of beer, but I found it tasty and refreshing. The next morning at breakfast at a restaurant in town, there were small signs on the table for their beers. So that afternoon, I went to Liar's Bench for lunch. I appreciate the messages the universe had sent me. Apart from a challenge getting parking at lunchtime, with several spots in the lot reserved for nearby Murray's Plumbing, there's much to like about Liar's Bench (and that's no lie). The beer selection is varied enough that I was able to get a very satisfying flight. My local friend had suggested I order whatever was the chef's special of the day (which today was a specialty burger), but we instead opted for the BBQ platter for 2, with a large amount of pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, and Texas toast. We sat at the bar and had great service and conversation. I can see why this is a popular lunch destination. Another bonus for me is that Liar's Bench is the closest brewery to a hotel at which I often stay when I'm in Portsmouth, making this a new destination for me when I'm in the area. read more

Was in Portsmouth to buy a new car and stopped here for a beer and a bite for a quick dinner and it hit all the marks. Very friendly, kind and quick service, chill and casual space to hang, and solid brews and food. I had the burnt end dog which was tasty -- snappy and lots of flavor, but it was a bit smaller than expected so I also got some savory pretzel bites that came out nice and hot with mustard and pub cheese. We were really looking for some darker beer but it seems it's just not the season for that so I had the Oktoberfest. Twice, because it went down so easy It was the perfect day for a cold beer out on the patio. Loved the hops plant out there and the serve yourself cold water. Service was a little of inside outside. Great menu! Everything looked good. We ordered the hummus/pita and the pork schnitzel sandwich. So good. Got a little train action going by too out beyond the fence The only comment is that there is not a lot of parking. This is a kind of small brew house with food. I enjoyed the beer and the flight of 4 samples of your choice is only 10 dollars. The food is hot dog and burger type food. I enjoyed the soft pretzel bites. The Chicago dog was good but in fact was not in any way a Chicago dog and 9 dollars was way too much for. A generic hot dog on a bun. But I know it's the beer people go for and for that i would say yes it's worth a stop and to know you could drink a flight of 8 beers off the list for 20 dollars is a bargain. A group of us stopped in Liars Bench for lunch after hiking Mt Major, so we were starving! The interior is your usual warehouse-y brewery, but the outside ambiance is great. Beautiful plants and flowers surround the courtyard. I am always so impressed when I find a brewery that also has an awesome kitchen. I ordered the potato salad and falafel and WOW! The potato salad was vinegary and delicious, and the falafel is one of the best I've had. Everyone in our group raved about their meal, including the Rachel, the hoagie italiano, and the chopped cheese. As I was looking through places I hadn't reviewed yet, I was shocked to see that I had not reviewed Liars Bench! This brewery is one of my local go-tos in town. More and more breweries are expanding and changing their brand, but Liars Bench has and remains true to its authentic self. Located in an old plumbing supply warehouse, they have kept that grungy, hipster vibe on the inside with old historical artifacts, and they even have an outside space with various picnic tables, barrel tables, etc. Looking for some snacks to munch on while you sip on some craft brews? Liars also serves a variety of elevated pub food ranging from hot dogs, dips, and sandwiches. All items are made in house and are great accompaniments to their beer selections. Service from staff is always spot on, too! As far as their beers, some of my favorite ones that they always have on tap are "Love Duck", which is a pale ale, and "Young Upstart" which is a maltier IPA. However, my absolute favorite is 1/2 Cab which is a Tart Saison with Cabernet Franc Grapes. It's salty, tart, and absolutely one of my favorite beers of all time. Had a great experience at this little brewery. We came on a Friday afternoon before the rush began. Our waitress said it starts getting busy around 4:30. Seating is outdoor only at the moment with plenty of space for distancing especially at the time of day we came. We had a late lunch and the food was delicious. Really good takeout experience! Their queso dip is delicious, and they give a generous amount of tortilla chips. The Ginger Soy Tofu Sliders were fresh, tasty, and unique. Very filling but cute at the same time! I wish they used a different chip company, as I try not to support Lays products. The Banana Puddin' dessert was exceptional. It was filling, not overly sickening sweet, and the cookie on top was crisp and fresh.
