Hello - Once again we are very pleased with the people and the service we have received from A1 Appliance Repair!. We have had at least three appliance related problems over the past three years. Each time we have not hesitated to contact A1. The most recent involved our LG Refrigerator / Freezer. Despite our best efforts we could not resolve the problem . We contacted A1 and they said they could be at our house by 5. They called ahead and told us that they could be there early. We had just moved into a rental with extremely outdated appliances and found out that our oven was not working as expected. It took around 8 minutes for the oven to turn on, was making our place smell like gas, and was not properly heating up. Our landlord called the company to send out a technician, and they sent Bernie. I am confused by the negative reviews. They were highly recommended on Next Door. I called at noon on Friday; Edgar showed up 3 hrs later, right when he said he would. Fixed the drain on my 14 yr old freezer/fridge. I thought the charge was reasonable. I feel that they gave exceptional service. Called them to repair my built-in oven, they said they could get a part that would take care of the problem, after first fiddling around with it a few times and then finally when the part arrived and they installed it, the oven did not work, wouldn't get into the 400 degree range. They all had Russian accents and were very slow. They did not give me a refund for the expensive part. I finally got a new oven from Lowe's. They could at least have told me honestly it couldn't be fixed. Do not recommend them at all to anyone. They are also very slow and don't show up for appointments, no explanation. read more

The igniter on my oven died the day after Thanksgiving - and I still had SO many Christmas cookies to bake! I called A1 and they were able to schedule an appointment for me that same week. Bernie arrived within the appointed time slot and was able to quickly diagnose the issue. He had a replacement part in his truck, and in less than an hour start to finish I had a fully working oven again. He was very clear in communicating to me the cost for the service call as well as the additional cost for the repair, and was able to answer my (probably dumb) questions about the problem as well. I bought a used refrigerator (not a good idea) which stopped working a few weeks after we got it. I called to get it repaired. The owner said they needed to first diagnose the problem ($85) then they would give me an estimate to fix it. The technician came out and told me he had diagnosed the problem and it would be a total of $170. The technician spent around 30 minutes at my house. After a day it was sort of working then within a few more days it was not working at all. I called again but no one responded. Total waste of time/money. read more

Completely incompetent Yesterday, (June 18, 2018), I had an appointment scheduled with "Bernie" for between 12 and 3. He never showed up, never called to explain why he was late or to reschedule. More than 2 hours later (after 5), he tried to call me. I tried to call A1 multiple times today (the next day), but the phone just rings - no answer, no answering machine/service. This is clearly a sad excuse for a legitimate business. I am so delighted to give my highest recommendation to A-1. They are in fact A M A Z I N G! I bought a lovely mobile home in San Vicente but it has needed renovations. One of the things I thought I might need to replace was the obviously original double wall electric oven by O'Keefe & Merritt in the kitchen. The door in the top oven was slightly askew, and three different people I asked (two contractors and one handyman) all said to just use the latch when I wanted to bake. I've been cooking for decades and I know the latch is used for self cleaning,, not baking. At this point frustration set in. I didn't know what to do because I wasn't sure if the oven was safe to use and I wasn't going to trust a non-expert's word on something that had to do with safety. After a couple of days of intense googling, I found A-1 here in Santa Barbara. I called. The vintage appliance repair's owner was courteous, knowledgeable, and came out this afternoon to look at it. He looked it over carefully, tweaked a few things, checked the various dials and temperatures, and said it was actually in perfect condition. The oven is from 1978, same as the home, and it has almost never been used. It is in fact close to brand new, the best he has ever seen. The door that wouldn't close was likely due to it being open and someone bumping or falling lightly against it. But that has been fixed, and I have essentially a new oven for $85! And I promised him I wouldn't get rid of it. Uncommunicative and/or unresponsive handymen (or, worse, those who tell you things they really don't know about) can be very discouraging. My Wolf oven/range needed a diagnosis because the oven part stopped working. The A-1 repairman who came said it was a problem with the voltage getting to the oven, but that he was not capable of moving the unit from the wall in order to check whether that was a problem with the stove's electrical unit, the socket or somewhere else. He said replacing the electrical control unit would be pricy and difficult and he'd get back to me about an estimate on that, and he didn't. Overall, it was such a poor diagnosis that I have had to book a different company to come and really tell me something solid. My recommendation is -- Don't use this company for high end appliances at least. Maybe they'd be ok for standard appliances? read more

It is pretty clear to me that the repair guy installed at least some used parts on my dryer. He did not leave the replaced ones so I suspect he is going to use the better ones of these on other repairs. He tried to avoid replacing the drive belt on mine despite the bid to replace it. When I insisted on the belt being replaced it went to his truck land sorted through a bunch of loose belts to find one that fit so I think it was also used. His estimate was $200 to $250 do replace all belts and materials on this obvious diagnosis. The parts cost $33 on line. He was at my home for less than 1 hour and insisted he should get the higher price despite there being absolutely no complication in the job. read more

Disappointing experience. I called with a refrigerator issue and the service guy was able to come by first thing in the morning on the following day. He was able to diagnose the issue and quoted a repair price of $400. I called back 3 times to confirm that the part was being ordered and when it could be installed. They kept saying they would get back to me and didn't. I ended up ordering the part on Amazon ($125), watching some YouTube videos, and repairing myself. So I basically paid $65 for a 15 minute service appointment to diagnose the issue - not a complete waste but not the end to end service I was hoping for. read more

The owner came to my 1974 mobile home by the beach on his way home from a long working day and fixed my old original gas heater. I had another company tell me that it was impossible to get it working again, but they could replace it for thousands of dollars and I'd have to replace my A/C too!! He arrived promptly and was able to diagnose and fix the problem quickly and effectively. He was friendly and knowledgeable and was kind enough to educate me about how a dryer works. He showed me the inside of my dryer and what the problem was. He even took off the front of my washer and checked that out, as it had been making a noise and advised me what to do, just as a courtesy. I discovered our dishwasher had a small leak (about 1-2 table spoons whenever it drained the water out, which occurred several times each washing cycle). It was clearly coming from a cheap plastic piece attached to a large, black, metal thing. The dishwasher is a cheap GE model; an in-kind, brand-new replacement would cost about $300-$350 (plus installation). Knowing it was such a bargain price model, I was hesitant to spend a lot of cash to figure out what was wrong with it, knowing that in all likelihood any repair would be a substantial cost of a brand new machine. I called 2 appliance repair places (a local one in Goleta, and A-1 in Santa Barbara). The Goleta company is just a few blocks from where I live and they wanted a $70 fee to come to my house and take a look, even though the result would most likely be to tell me that it would be cheaper to get a new one than to repair it, and that this fee would not be applied towards any repairs. I asked if they would just take a look at a photo that I could provide via email and they flat-out refused. To get any information from them, it was going to cost me $70. The second place I called was A-1 in Santa Barbara. I apologize that I don't remember the person's name, but over the phone, he was able to describe to me what I was seeing (the plastic piece is the diverter control valve and the big black thing is the pump). He confirmed my suspicion that, unfortunately, the plastic piece cannot be detached from the pump and therefore I would have to replace the entire pump, which would run at least $300 (he offered to give me a precise quote if I wanted to provide the model number, etc.) and would likely be far more than it was worth. His advice was to get a new machine. Not wanting to give up on a repair just yet, I asked if he would take a look at a photo that I could send via text or email and he agreed. He got back to me the next day to confirm his earlier blind, over-the-phone diagnosis. He also said his service fee to come out and look at it in person is $40 or $45 (I forget which). Compared to my local appliance repair company just down the street, A-1 saved me from wasting $70 to learn that I need to get a new machine, and A-1 recommended a course of action that steered me away from giving them work. To me, there is no better sign of an honest company than one that will actively recommend that they NOT do work. 5 stars! read more
