I so badly want to love this place, but alas I can't fake it. It has everything I love. Cafeteria style dinner. Simple lay out. And friendly staff any time I've been in. But unfortunately the food has always been a smige less than "o.k.". That said, the side room does have the smallest 3 stool bar that gets it an extra . Absolutely my favorite place to eat in Haverhill. Lived there all my life. When I go in there, it's like I have travelled back in time to the way Haverhill used to be with a larger Greek population. love the atmosphere and seeing the older Haverhill generation meeting over coffee and talking like they did way back when. This place brings back memories The food---AHHHH. The dishes are home made and simple. The kind you would get in a diner. The Greek Omelet is light and fresh (although HUGH) the pancakes are big and the side of hash browns is quite yummy and not too seasoned. Slightly crotchety deli with great house-made food served cafeteria style. It's missing a large table for a group. We went with five and had to split up. The serving of lasagna was almost as big as my head and it came with bread and a super fresh salad. read more

I ordered some food from Uber eats. Just wanted to say kudos to Tony (I think he said on the phone). He was nice enough to call and make sure he had it made as wanted. I really appreciated him taking Tht step to be sure. I told him I didn't want a side. He said well it comes with one. Pick something, may as well. Mashed potatoes? I know this sounds dumb, but the small mashed with gravy was seriously outstanding. Extremely good. Not expected. Ha. This place should get 6 stars. Love their turkey and roast beef. Everything done there is done how it should be. You are crazy if you live near this place and do not go here at least semi regularly. read more

The thing about this place is that they serve full complete dinners, cafeteria style. So, if you want a decent home-cooked meal sort of dinner, this is the place, even if it lacks the ambiance (and high prices) that some of the other places on Restaurant Row have. On Fridays they have a fish chowder, which is filling (add a salad). Breakfasts have large portions, nothing that's going to rock the culinary world, but just honest, consistent, good food. Normally I love going to A-1 Deli. When our regular waitress is there everything runs perfectly - everyone loves her. Tonight she was not there. I should have known when the new waitress was outside smoking and the other was sitting at the bar on her phone. After about 5 minutes the one at the bar came over surprised I was there. The crackers had a bunch of empty wrappers in the bowl. The soup crackers came wet and open. The bread did not come until requested. After we complained, the waitress at the bar got very huffy. Several times she rudely reached across my plate. No manners what so ever. Finally I did not even finish my meal. We decided to leave and will not go back unless we are sure our regular waitress is there. We felt bad for the new waitress and still left her a good tip. The rude waitress is always there but this was the first time we had her. The portions were also smaller than usual which is fine because after that I did not feel like eating. read more

I literally have not been able to bring myself to try much but the Turkey club....for the last 10 years. I've eaten here since I was a kid, and it's delicious. I've tried, off of families or friends plates, different things, but I always get the turkey club pretty much. I think I got the roast beef dinner once.... I love the place though. the people are okay, they aren't the most personable staff, but they've been there for like 40 years each... It's a great deli. Lots of older people eat there. It's a good lunch! They always bring it to your table for you. They have a meager amount of beers but whatever. read more

It wasn't even busy but the guy behind the counter seemed really hurried and wanting us to choose and move on down. We were in Haverhill from out of town to check out a wedding venue and stumbled upon A-1 Deli. Walking in we were warmly welcomed and the guys made suggestions of what might be good to eat for lunch. They sliced fresh roast beef for my fiancé's sandwich and put it on a heavenly looking roll. I ordered a Greek salad and they cooked me fresh chicken to put on top right in front of me. It was delicious, including the authentic Green dressing. Super casual and friendly place and I hope we go back sometime! read more

I've been going to the A-1Deli for let's see, 30 years! Guess it's high time I told them how much I love them! Love the staff, always friendly, happy to see you and they remember me always even if I haven't had a chance to get there for a year or more. But my ultimate fav there is the corn chowda! It can not be beat. I've tried many, even tried to make it myself but just can't ever get it to taste the same. Love you guys! 3.5 stars- Typical greasy spoon no frills diner (great cure for a hangover). If you come here wanting/expecting a cafeteria style greasy-spoon place, this place will not disappoint. HUGE menu, huge portions, tasty food. Really great to go for breakfast (love the hash browns). Pancakes, toast, eggs, sandwiches, they have it all. There is never a shortage of seating... and if you want a fancier environment (with the same food) you can go next door. I'm not sure if it's call something different, but there is a menu and a wait staff vs ordering at the counter, waiting and then seating yourself. read more

I don't get some of the negative and bitter reviews here...my experience was they were friendly, quick, and attentive. The food was good, HUGE portions. It's a deli people, not a 5-star restaurant. And for a deli they have a HUGE selection! Tons of specials and freshly made, hot fries. Very affordable as well. They have been in business since 1980, I asked what I think was one of the owners. My wife and I came here to eat for the first time and it was an awesome experience. We ordered the ruben sandwich and chicken parm with two meat balls and ravioli. Last time I went to this place I wasn't happy but I tried it again last week and was very happy that I did. My husband lived his Yankee pot roast dinner and I enjoyed the eggplant parm sub on a really nice sub roll. The prices aren't cheap but not too bad, I will definitely be back! read more

My boyfriend and I used to come here every Sunday after our early morning runs. Very cheap with large portions! The breakfast is very tasty and super fast...it comes out within minutes, or sometimes as your about to sit down. Huge portions and tasty home cooked meals. Meatloaf, corned beef, chicken, cuts of roast beef and other home style meals at a great price and there is always leftovers for lunch the next day. I like the cafeteria style of ordering. you can walk up and see most of the food and then make your choice. There are always a bunch of great sides that come with any meal. The GF and I both get a meal and a soda for around $22 and that is also lunch the next day. Very nice job A-1 !! read more

I don't generally like giving 5 stars, as there should always be room for improvement, right? The A-1 is what it is. Passing by, you might think it's just another greasy spoon, right on the sidewalk of a downtown street. But...you can find it busy from breakfast through lunch, it's all that good. Even so, the counter servers and cooks move the line as fast as you can imagine. The dinners are right in front of you...corned beef and cabbage, roast chicken, beef, ham. Really most anything you can think of, all with more than a serving of real mashed potatoes with gravy and vegetable. I've gotten the 2-for-1 takeout dinners, and they're always quick to point out you're getting just as much food with this deal, but to be honest, the mound of mashed is noticeably more than you'll find on a plate. And day after day, the food is always the same -- A-1. Hot, tender, and delicious. I've gotten takeout breakfast sandwiches on toasted English, bagels and cream cheese, and hot dogs or Ruebens, and it's all been fantastic. You always walk away from paying, knowing you've gotten exactly what you expected, because it is what it is. A-1. read more

Hands down our favorite breakfast spot in the Merrimack valley! The food is always consistent and the omelets are massive and delicious. Defiantly come here with a big appetite. The omelets are DEFINATLY big enough to split with two people if you choose to. The cooks are the same guys and are always friendly. It is a deli style dinner meaning you go to the counter and order and then they bring the food to your table. I always get the veggie omelet with cheese and a grilled English muffin. Delish! You will not regret coming here if your looking for a nice old fashioned breakfast. read more

The staff is so friendly and full of personality! Good basic food at a fair price. My only complaint is the cost of a cup of coffee and slice of cake... $7.00! I returned the cake to the cooler and just got the coffee because I felt guilty they had just put on a fresh pot for me. Now I know restaurants make their money on deserts but for $5.00 I want a good sized slice, not the tiny sliver that was on that plate. I thought maybe the cashier was joking. I LOVE with all my heart the A1 deli. The calm chowder was my grandma and moms favorite. I love the turkey or corn beef dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy and mixed veggies. Love the desserts they have waiting to be picked up and bought, and the yummy baklava by the cash register is my all time favorite. You can't go wrong with the A1 deli, i have never tried breakfast but have heard good things. I love their meat dinners though, so flavorful and goes down nice and satisfying. They've been in business for many years remember going their when I was a kid. I get flashback memories of coming here with my grandma :) I love this place and I hope they never close. read more
