A-1 delivers large filling portions of flavorful food at a low, low cost. We ordered the beef & lamb shawarma entree & the 1/2 chicken. Both came with rice, pita, a cucumber tomato & herb salad and your choice of sauce. My to go order was so big that they stapled the box closed! I was impressed. My husband and i both had leftovers which never happens. I was surprised to see some Egyptian drinks in the fridge and indulged in an apple malt beverage that tasted like non-alcoholic apple beer. Super tasty! Service was also great. The owner even gave us samples of pita chips and hummus. Both were delicious! I think they make the hummus there. We'll definitely come back to try more apps. I got a A-1 Mixed Appetizer with a lamb kabab sandwich with three falafel. They also include on of their incredibly spicy stuffed eggplants. Everything was delicious: the lamb nicely seared and juicy served with excellent pickled onions and garlics sauce; the oval shaped falafel was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, very herbaceous. I ordered those because I wanted some texture and crunch, but the mixed appetizer also included baked pita chips, which were real nice My only complaint is that menu said salad but they included stuffed grape leaves which I'm not a fan of. This place is not the same. I have been eating here since they first opened and have loved their Egyptian foods a lot. Lately though the food is not the same. I recently ordered a hawashe and instead of the great oregano / parsley taste that it used to have, it was sobbing in oil and tasted like burned ketchup! The shish taouk (chicken kabob) on pita was served as small pieces of chopped chicken that looked more like shawarma then taouk and there was no tomato, onion or lettuce. The so called garlic sauce now tasted like salt water. It is a shame but this once great spot has suffered over the ownership / management changes and is no longer anything like the amazing place it used to be. read more

Loved the food! Simple, unpretentious family owned restaurant that serves all array of Egyptian specialty food. We've tried beef liver, mombar & feteer all these items were very delicious! They also serve food to go. The only draw back was a long wait time for the order. And the interior definitely needs some updates. Otherwise food is good. read more

It is great for a family of four and I love how everything is fresh and that the food is always hot! Hawawshe it's a pain to wait for but is every bit of worth it in the end this is one of my favorite things to eat from this place! Be sure to order two because when your finished with one You'll want another! The Shawarma sandwiches are tough one to boot again the food is alway hot and fresh I like the amount of salad and dressing to this sandwich it really hits the spot. A hole in the wall place with excellent food! I came into Bayonne for a cruise out of port liberty and after a day of travel I just wanted something hot and easy. I had their chicken shawarma with fries and it was excellent. Fresh pita too! Their place is small so sitting room is very limited. But I had dinner at 6pm on a Friday and I could find a table. But plan accordingly. Tip: if you're not into a bit of a wait for them to make it fresh, just order take out. Otherwise this is an excellent place to stop. read more

I ordered the kofta and my husband ordered the mixed shawarma and my God, he wont stop talking about it. The food is five stars! Service was swift and the place wasn't too crowded. I've been missing this type of food in Bayonne since Princessa was destroyed in 2016. Finally we have an option for delicious, inexpensive Egyptian outlet. It's located in the old Wok & Roll but it's a much better option! It's now bright, clean and very well-lit. First, the people who work there are beyond friendly and the service is great. That's a big plus in my book. We have ordered from here twice and on Tuesday my husband & I decided to go sit & eat. The place is small with not a lot of tables but it was great to see the food & be able to speak to the server about it. We had the A-1 mixed appetizer platter consisting of all 5 appetizers. Everything was delicious but my husband really loved the moussaka. Their hummus is spectacular. When we ordered at home we had falafel (great, not dry at all) and chicken shawarma. The tahini really made it all come together. When we ate at A-1, I ordered a lamb kebab wrap and my husband ordered the lamb kebab platter. This was in addition to the A-1 Mixed platter of appetizers, so you can imagine we had a lot of food left over. The lamb was juicy, not dry at all, and my husband said his rice was nicely seasoned. The pita was fresh and soft. This place is going to be on our regular take-out rotation. read more

Unethical, sneaky charging, and HORRIBLE food delivery. - tried charging me $28 for two rice platters. When I asked for the breakdown it was 7.50 for each then $11 for the extra white sauces and hot sauces I asked for - delivery took 1hr, 4 minutes - delivery woman walked up to my door with with the platter box sideways in the bag with the food spilled out - I asked why would she carry it like that she said that it was how they made it ?????? Horrible service, does not deserve to serve food in this town. read more

Wanted to give something new a shot, since we always wind up ordering from the same 3-4 places in town, so I walked up the block to A1 Grill. Food is reasonably priced and tasted great. Portion sizes were more than sizable (had some left over for dinner). I've only had a few items from the menu, but I would strongly recommend the mixed shawarma entree. It comes with so much food, an extra cup of sauce, and a small salad. Also, I tried the Mumbar (something I'd not seen on any menus around Bayonne) and was pleasantly surprised by it. We usually get a couple platters (comes with meat, rice, pita and salad), as well as the baba ganoush, hummus and half roasted chicken. The meat is usually a little on the drier side and nothing is spicy but everything is cooked fresh an flavored well. Highly addictive and affordable. A-1 is my go to spot for a falafel and hummus. I usually get the falafel sandwich (there is a hint of lemon which takes it to another level), babaganouj (smoky eggplant dip is flavor insanity in a bowl) and a side salad (their salad is so light and seasoned perfectly with onions and spices...love that!!) Unsanitary, terrible service, dishonest! A1 Grill is an experience from hell, The place is quite unsanitary; filthy would be the appropriate adjective. Philip served a foul smelling, old, reheated food that was quite dry. He was also defensive and had a overall bad attitude. A previous experience was also bad, he overcharged and dismissed the complaint claiming that "there was extra!" therefore his gouging was justifiable! Dishonest! Should you decide to brave food poisoning @A1Grill, make sure that you check your receipt 'cause you may be overpaying for it. read more

Really good authentic Egyptian eats. Had beef and chicken shawarma platters--both had a decent amount of meat and rice. Meats were well flavored. Tahina sauce was very smooth and delicious. This place is a hit for Bayonne. I'm not totally familiar with Egyptian cuisine and the guy made me feel comfortable explaining things to me. Always a plus when the staff is kind. Makes the food taste better. :) Fav so far is the lamb shawarma. It's healthier than many of the other options we have when we order out. I visited Bayone NJ one day in the summer 2019, arriving hungry for lunch. I was driving alone (I'm a senior citizen from Philly) and I was in the mood for a hot dog or deli sandwich. I cruised the main shopping street and quickly discovered that most of the businesses were international-themed. I saw the sign for A-1 Grill, and I figured this would be the place where I could get an American-style lunch. I was wrong. The menu featured things like Baba Ghanouj and Chicken Shawarma. However, the place looked clean and bright and welcoming, similar to a small diner. Something told me this was a good place. Abandoning my lunch cravings, I ordered a Falafel platter. It was excellent. I ordered it To Go because I wanted to eat lunch at a nearby waterfront park. In the round covered foil dish there were 6 round patties of falafel, a nice salad of crispy veggies, a good portion of pita bread, a bed of moist rice, and a white sauce in a small container. All very tasty and well-prepared. It cost about $7.95 and the portion was large. Besides the good food, I like the way I was treated in this restaurant and I liked what I saw of the quiet, hard-working staff. It was just one brief visit, but I like the A-1 Grill and will visit again when in Bayonne. read more

This place is receiving 1 star because of customer service. They gave me a receipt with a total that is untrue (they decided to "round up" to even of $15 even though it was less- not much but principal of honesty to customers) and they did not put anywhere on the receipt a delivery charge of $1 to Bayonne. When I called to ask why the receipt was more money (I wanted to make sure I tipped the driver and she didn't get shorted) the man was rude, said "all his customers know about the delivery charge" and he hung up on me. In the past they changed what they serve with their dishes several times. The food is decent, but to be treated so rudely is unacceptable. I asked nicely, and a simple apology and explanation would have gone a long way. They just lost 15 plus customers at an office building. read more
