Baba Ganoush, Pita Bread, and The Arab Spring

How do you begin to start a Review for probably the most delicious Mediterranean food I've had in the tri-state area. I would like to say in New York City, but this restaurant is located in Hoboken. It's walking distance from the pier. If I walking distance you enjoy 20 minute uphill walks and through college campuses (Stevens U). I loved walking to this place because it helped us feel better about the amount of food that we ordered when we arrived. The service was something to rave about. We had a young girl whose name I'm forgetting now but who was really knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations as to what we should order. As our picture show we ordered the 40 thieves grill mix, the fresh squeezed mint lemonade, and the Arab spring. We ended with Turkish coffee which completed the meal in a beautiful way. Every single item that we ordered was so flavorful and so yummy. Would 100% go back to this establishment!

For the past two years I have been coming here all the time, at least once a week. Here's the full breakdown of my experience: 1. Service The owner will make you feel at home, very jovial and showcasing the classic middle-eastern hospitality I love. And not just with me, I see it ALL the time with everyone who comes in. You have questions about the menu? You have some concerns? Want to talk about the weather? Expect nothing less than a smile and nice conversation. 2. Food I only eat halal so I love coming in here to eat. Not only is the food yummy, but it is also very consistently yummy and you can always count on a satisfying meal. Personally, I'm a sucker for the entrées, which are VERY filling with the rice and salad. I've had just about every one now and always end up with a clean plate. Even the ones I did not have, like some of the lamb, I have had friends try and give great reviews. The sandwiches are also great, especially if you are looking for a smaller meal. I have also ordered some catering for large events, to which Ali Baba went above and beyond in providing every possible thing to make the catering superb. Overall, especially with the lack of Arabic inspired and halal food in Hoboken, Ali Baba has been like a second home to me. I always love speaking with the owner, and when I'm not, I know that he is in the back cooking up great meals. Highly highly highly recommend trying Ali Baba if you are in Hoboken!!!

We've been to Ali Baba a few time different times over the years and the food always hits just right! The serving sizes are massive! My husband and I can easily share an appetizer and entree, but an entree each is too much! The staff is so sweet and kind! I prefer sitting outside versus inside. The outdoor area is adorable but the inside is pretty dark and not as appealing. Hoping for more warm weather to sit outside again!

Awesome spot for casual Mediterranean food! Very large portion sizes and great value, all conveniently located in Hoboken We shared the 40 thieves mixed grill which was mort than enough for two people. The meats were perfectly cooked and deliciously flavored! We also had salad, rice and pita with dips which were all great! Service is friendly and quick. Definitely recommend for a casual date night or night out with friends. This spot would also probably be perfect for take out!

    Half of Beef Gyro

After looking for an acceptable gyro place, my husband and I decided to try this place. We ordered delivery over the phone, but maybe next time would order online as we had to be handed off to another person who could take our order. Food was excellent. We shared the halloumi cheese starter and then enjoyed our beef gyro. Very delicious. Might try dining in next time.

The meze plates were nice, cool and refreshing. The lamb with thick and juicy. They're open later in the evening which is a plus when you're wandering Hoboken starving and looking for some tasty grub that ISN'T bar food!

    Falafel Platter & Sahara Chicken
    Devangi D.

I would give this place 3.5/5 stars. The staff is very friendly and it seems like a very homely restaurant. We ordered the Sahara Chicken and the Falafel platter. However, the food came out way too fast and after tasting it, I started to doubt how fresh it was. The falafel was very tasty, but the hummus on the platter was very sour and didn't taste right. The salad also was kinda sour, they just put a lot of lemon over it and The pita was also chewy and not fresh. The rice with the Sahara chicken was very fragrant and the chicken was very flavorful. The baklava was amazing! They had an extensive dessert menu and as someone who has grown up in Abu Dhabi, I loved that.

I got the Garlic Chicken Entree because it was recommended to me and enjoyed it very much! It came in a huge rectangular platter with rice, grilled onions, and salad. Salad comes with the standard iceberg lettuce (I think?) and purple lettuce, with red onions, olives, tomatoes, with a respectable little block of feta cheese. The chicken was not bad, and it came with some sauces (garlic, takiti -idk if I spelled that correctly- and barbecue sauce). The star of the dish was the rice! So fragrant, delicious, and a bit sweet. But the thing that I absolutely LOVED from this place was the pita bread. We got the Baba Ganush and it came with warm, soft, chewy pita bread. It was so so so good. We tried to get the pita bread we couldn't finish and I accidentally dropped it :( Prices are satisfactory, but I think it's a bit expensive for Middle Eastern/Turkish food. 4/5 delicious food, but a bit pricey.

My BF said this is one of the best lamb gyro's he has ever has in his life! The hummus and grape leaves also delicious. Ibrahim is very friendly and welcoming. Cute, cozy, intimate. Perfect for a date.

I ventured out to Hoboken to visit one of my besties and we decided to visit Ali Baba. Neither of us has been there before so we were eager to give it a try. This spot is BYOB too so that definitely didn't hurt. We walked in - no reservation needed - and treated ourselves to the vino we brought (thanks, Mel!). Our waitress brought out complimentary pita and dip. We wanted to try a few things so we settled on sharing the 40 Thieves Mix Grill (grilled chicken, lamb kabob, beef gyro, kufta, rice) which was a very decent amount of food and super flavorful. I am not a big lamb person, but I did like the way it was prepared here so I made the exception. We had a ton of leftovers which I can appreciate, too. I may have seen my friend sneak a little snacky from these later in the night lol The overall ambiance was casual and I could see this being a good take out place. One weird thing that I wasn't expecting - we asked for water and just assumed they'd bring us glasses of it, but we instead were brought Poland Spring bottles which we were obviously charged for later on. If we had known they'd charge us for bottles of water, we would have just brought our own. May be something to keep in mind if you plan on coming here. Bring your own alcoholic beverages, but bring something to hydrate with too.

Do they have gluten friendly options?

Hi! We have rice platters, salad options, hummus & baba ganoush, and kebab dishes that are all gluten free. However our bread (sandwiches) are not. Have a good day!

This small, intimate, and bustling Palestinian spot in Chelsea delivers in a big way. Yes, it is crowded, but that only adds to the vibrant, cozy atmosphere of this charming location. The food, however, is the real star--everything was excellent. We ordered a spread of appetizers to share: the Hummus, creamy Baba Ganoush, flavorful Muhammara, and the spicy Chili and Garlic Shrimp were standouts, along with the unique Cauliflower Fritters and Majaddara Croquette. For the main course, the Musakhan (sumac chicken) was succulent and aromatic, while the Makloubeh and rice were perfectly executed comfort food. We ended the night with Cheesecake and a rich Flourless Chocolate Cake, both of which were fantastic. While the service was a bit spotty and the staff seemed overwhelmed at times, the quality of the food and the warm, authentic atmosphere made it a night to remember. Verdict: Highly recommended for intimate gatherings. We will definitely return to Qanoon!

It is on the smaller side, with around 15 tables, creating a cozy atmosphere with warm wood finishes and natural design elements, and there's a television. I met a friend for dinner, and we shared several dishes. We started with the mocktail of the day, a frozen watermelon drink ($12), served in a pint glass and it was very refreshing and not too sweet (didn't taste like any sugar was added). For appetizers, we ordered the hummus ($12) and baba ganoush ($12), both served with pita. The hummus was good, with whole chickpeas mixed in for added texture, but the baba ganoush was very good. We also ordered a gluten-free option, a side of crudités ($7). Next, we tried the baked feta ($19), served with thin slices of peach. While the combination of flavors worked well, the portion was small for the price. For our main course, we shared the Kofa, Palestinian meatballs baked with cauliflower, onion, tomatoes, and tahini sauce ($38). The dish was enjoyable and very flavorful, and the tahini sauce well-complemented the meatballs well, but the portion size felt small given the price. The service was attentive throughout the meal. We had several questions about gluten-free options, and our server took the time to double-check each dish we asked about, which was appreciated. The pacing between courses was also well timed. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and appreciated the cozy atmosphere, attentive service, and thoughtful accommodation of dietary restrictions. The restaurant was quiet enough for easy conversation. While the food was well prepared and flavorful, the portions felt small considering the prices.

In general, stick with the mezzes…read more Recommended: Artichoke, cauliflower Good: Skirt Steak, hummus, desserts Wouldn't recommend: Pappardelle, tahdig, soup dumplings I went to this pretty tasty and dimly lit Levant/Israeli spot a while back with a group. The service was friendly and gave good recommendations to those who wanted them, knowing the menu well as well as allergens. In general, I would recommend the mezze/small plates much more than the entrees. To drink, I had a Matos, with rye, rosemary Aperol, amaro Noveis, and lemon for $18. It was a creative and tasty cocktail with both the Noveis and rosemary adding a unique herbal flavor. Someone else enjoyed a mocktail, the $10 Yarok with cucumber, fresh ginger, and lime. From the mezzes I sampled, the best was the Artichoke for $17, with pistachio labneh, preserved lemon relish, and dukkah. The portion was large, and the artichokes were well-cooked with a soft texture. Otherwise, there was some nuttiness from the labneh and dukkah, and some sourness from the relish. I would recommend it heavily. Also very tasty was the $19 Cauliflower with chermoula, scallion, pickled raisins, and almonds. I much prefer spots that roast cauliflower enough to burn it slightly but not too much, and they did it perfectly here. Otherwise, there was a mild sourness from the chermoula, while the rest of the ingredients added crunch and a bit of sweetness. The Hummus for $17, with green schug, chickpeas, and pita, was good. It was smooth and silky, but I wish the tahina flavor were a bit stronger. I liked the addition of the schug, which added an herbal heat to it. The worst of the mezze and the worst dish overall were the Yemenite Soup Dumplings with beef and hilbeh for $19. This came with four large pieces, with the dumplings more resembling a Georgian khinkali in terms of thickness, which made them very doughy. While the soup was tasty, there wasn't that much of it. I wouldn't recommend this at all. My main dish was the alright $34 Pappardelle with mushrooms, sweet onion tahini, and bread crumbs. The pasta was a bit soft for my liking, and I found it a bit too sweet overall. The mushrooms had some good earthiness, but I wouldn't recommend this much. I also wouldn't recommend the Tahdig Rice, with saffron, pistachio, and barberries. The side is $16 and is listed for two, which is accurate based on size, but the flavor is lacking. The Persian rice side had a mix of textures, with some of it having the trademark crispiness, but there weren't that many toppings. Unless you're getting a dish with a sauce, I wouldn't bother. I tried a bit of the much better Skirt Steak for $38, with adobo dry rub, leek puree, mashwi salad, and potato chip. This dish had a fun presentation, and the skirt steak was perfectly cooked medium rare with a nicely seasoned rub. The chip was a fun concept and added a bit of crunch. In terms of others, someone else enjoyed the $37 Brick Chicken For dessert, some people ordered the Malawah Churros and the Almond Malabi. Both were $14 and were enjoyed. I was pretty full at that point, so I didn't have a bite of the former, while the latter had a pleasant rosewater flavor. They both seemed decent with a good enough portion. If I had the artichoke and steak, I'd probably give this spot a 5. However, it's too inconsistent with a couple of dishes that both the group and I disliked.

This is officially my new go to spot and I'm going to be telling everyone about it. I got there right at our reservation time, but the uptown trains had completely stopped and my friend had to walk all the way from Canal St to the East Village. It took her about 30 minutes to get there (), but the staff were so kind about it. They never made me feel uncomfortable or pressured to order while I waited, which I really appreciated. I did end up ordering a couple things so there would be food on the table when she arrived. We got the za'atar fries and the falafel with tahini and pita. Delishhhh For our mains, my friend got the chicken kebab which looked fantastic, and I got the veggie couscous bowl. It was unbelievable. It tasted exactly like the couscous my mom and safta made when I was growing up, even down to the broth being served with it. Eating it honestly made me feel like I was six years old again. This was one of my favorite meals as a kid and I haven't had it like that in so long, so I was so happy to find a place that does it this well. The vegetables were perfect with zucchini, butternut squash, cauliflower, and chickpeas, and I loved the addition of raisins and onions. Everything was also really reasonably priced for what you get. The energy in the restaurant was great and I loved that they have hooks for coats so you're not crammed at the table with jackets and bags. Overall just such a fantastic experience.
