Didn't get the best tailoring job on a bridesmaid dress but they were nice about it. $55 & 3 days later, the tailor had taken in the sides as well as shortened the straps on my dress but didn't take it in as much as I thought we had discussed so it was loose & the straps were shortened at different lengths so the dress hung crooked on my body. They offered to fix it but timeline wouldn't work for me so I took it as is. I'm giving 3 stars cuz they were very nice but the tailoring job was closer to 1.5 stars. My boyfriend and I took a pair of his suit slacks here to get them slimmed. The pant legs were way too wide and long, and the skilled tailors at A-1 turned them into perfectly-fitting slacks. The entire service cost $22 which, to be completely honest, I have no idea if that's a good price or not. However, the guys working here are skilled and extremely friendly. I love the tailor here! I originally chose it because it was near where I worked, but now I'll keep going even though I changed jobs. First, I brought in a bridesmaid's dress that like all dresses of that type was very ill fitting (and two sizes too large) and he very nicely showed me two ways he could alter it - one that was more precise and one that was CHEAPER - and left the decision to me. As I was already spending a lot of money, I was grateful not be forced to pay more. Second, I found the dress I wanted for the rehearsal dinner the day before I was supposed to leave town and needed the straps altered. I asked if he could do them in that short turn around and not only did he have it ready in time, his work was so good that no one knew it had been altered unless I told them. I love this place. I've had two dresses for a couple years that I haven't been wearing much because the styles were a bit dated. I brought them to A-1 Tailor and he re-made the dresses for me - added straps on a strapless dress, made a flat hem instead of a bubble hem, and shortened the dress a little. Changed the straps on the other dress, made the skirt of the dress less full and removed a set of enormous pockets. I feel like I have two brand new dresses and I love them! Great service! I came here because I run a lot of errands in downtown Evanston and was looking for a good tailor nearby to fix a broken dress zipper. The owner was VERY nice! When I came back to pick up my dress (just under a week),I surprised to find out that he remembered me. He only charged me $7 and even took a break from hemming someone's pants to grab my dress instead of having me wait until he was done. Best Tailor I've been to by far. Wafa is very nice, professional, and accomodating. He always does a fantastic job on all of the pieces I bring in. Once when my friend was visiting from Australia, during one of our shopping sprees, I convinced her to by the larger size of a trench coat she wanted (the next size down was just a bit snug), I told her I had a great tailor, but she was afraid the price would be prohibitive. Still I convinced her to just go in and check. She couldn't believe how reasonable the cost, and how accomodating Wafa (sp?) was. He completed the coat in just a few days so she could have it in time for her flight home. Wafa is a genius! You know how your Paige/Seven/True Religion jeans wear out in the seat, and no matter what you try to patch them, they just look like you uh, patched them??? Wafa can fix them!! For less than $15. And you can't even see his work! He's resurrected about half a dozen pairs of jeans in our house, saving us hundreds of dollars on replacements. I've been taking my alterations to him for over 15 years - pants, formal gowns, blouses, zipper replacements and more. Everything has always been PERFECT. Went to this gentleman to get some suit pants quickly tailored for a wedding. I waited too long and was now under the gun to get them done so my SO wouldn't get mad at me for procrastinating. Let me tell you, this guy came through! Took the pants in Thurs morning to be hemmed AND taken out at the waist (yeah, ate too much over the winter too), and he had them back to me by Friday afternoon! Rush job and all, the price was very reasonable and excellent quality of work. Super nice guy too! Will definitely be taking all future tailoring to him. I needed a suit tailored to be ready by Friday. I walked in at 2pm on Thursday, this request is something most tailors would have laughed at, but he told me it would be ok and he would let out the waist, thighs and jacket waist as well as shorten the sleeves by Friday at 1. That's a lot of work to be done on such short notice, he did it all and did an excellent job, it is now the best fitted suit I own. The price is reasonable and the service was great! The latest was repairing a tear on the seam on the side of my son's high tech winter jacket: it was so well done we literally couldn't tell where the tear had been. Without a doubt, A-1 is as good as advertised. My better half has been bringing her pants here to be hemmed for a little over a year now. She has yet to find anything to complain about, granted hemming pants is not the hardest thing for a tailor to do. So why not give Wafa a real test? I had an ill-fitting double-vented suit jacket (it was too long, too broad in the shoulders and needed taken in at the waist). I brought it in, tried it on, and proceeded to discuss the finer details. Wafa took the time to break it down and told me outright that the alterations may exceed the cost of the coat (it did not). That's the sort of candor I appreciate. When I got the coat back, it fit and was proportioned perfectly and looked like it had been custom-made (in some ways it had been). Based on my internet research, all the fixes Wafa made were considered extremely risky unless performed by an expert. Need I say more? The quality of work is definitely worth the price, which is totally reasonable to begin with. read more

Everything I buy is too long, including the sleeves on a jacket I loved. They were very detailed, had zippers on them (not as hideous as it sounds) and I figured I'd have to have all the coolness lopped off to fit my arms. Not so, said A-1 Tailors -- they would take the coolness and just move it up on the arm. There'd be a faint line in the tweed fabric, could i live with that?
