Why 5 stars? Because it was great cold brew for a good cause. --- --- --- My time here was incredibly brief, but very satisfying. I normally prefer nitro, but if that's not available, I go with cold brew. That's what I did here, and to be honest, it was shockingly great. Definitely one of the smoothest cold brew's I've ever had. We also ordered some cookies - a chocolate chip, a peanut butter and one with almond in the center. All of them were great and my only regret is that I had to share and they were not all for me. I've been meaning to review this place for a while. Great coffee, wonderful cause, excellent baristas. You cannot go wrong with a latte from here--the espresso is flavorful and the baristas know what they're doing. It's a great change in pace from corporate coffee shops. The staff is very kind. The shop itself is very spacious, natural lighting is a plus. Easily a place I would consider relaxing or working on writing or drawing. It's nice and quiet, too. This place rates high with this coffee snob's taste, for sure. I don't go easy on coffee spots, but this place has great coffee and a great cause. I've been coming here since 2018, and this place should be on the shortlist of Houston coffeeshops. The interior is cute, great for study and meetups alike. Coffee is a solid sell, very competitive with other offerings in town. The baristas are very friendly and it's clear that they love what they do. Absolutely love this coffee spot! I've never had a bad coffee here, both pre and during pandemic. I love that they have a little bar beside the pick up area with sugar, cinnamon, cups of water, etc. The staff is also super friendly and helpful if you ever need a recommendation. They also have a little merchandise section with t-shirts, jewelry, bags, and other cute items to buy. This place has both plenty of parking spots and plenty of seating inside-- I've never had an issue finding a good spot. Any organization that truly lives their mission is a WIN in my book. Even though this is only my 2nd time there... I am always recommending as a must-go coffee shop. My first time was pre-COVID so I arrived with my backpack in tow to do some work. But of course (for very good reason) the indoor seating is replaced with covered outdoor seating - so my shoulder got no relief, but I ain't trippin! I visited today (in the midst of Texas just foregoing all rules of engagement - shutting off power and water) and they were open with FREE COFFEE, FREE SOUP, FREE CHOCOLATES! I mean - just awesome. And again, because TX is just on another wave, there was drinkable and potable water available for anyone who needs. If you don't know, a 2nd cup exits to eradicate human trafficking (through awareness, action and survivor support). They do this SO well - you come in for coffee and get educated - YES! Everywhere you look you are reminded of their mission. So I'll be doing a Round 2 but needed to leave this here. You are able to see the true measure of an establishment (in this case) in times of crisis, and A 2nd Cup comes all the way through. I can't even believe this place is here in a neighborhood I grew up in. It's still wild to me to see coffee shops/cafes like this pop up in Northside, but I love it because I am a coffee nut! I ordered a flavored (the flavor combo is escaping me right now. Sweet Toff maybe?) iced latte, and it was so delicious! So much so that I debated going back hours later for another one. I had a nice conversation with the cute barista. The service was great. Ambiance was chill. Parking is challenging, so be aware of that. If you have a dual cab pickup truck with a trailer, this lot may not be the best parking option for you. Perhaps park on the side street as to not inconvenience everyone else in the lot. She also gave me a 10% off coupon to enjoy--cant wait to use it because I did not utilize it yesterday. I met up with my now colleague and old professor/coordinator for breakfast/coffee. I enjoyed the veggie taco and a macchiato while my colleague enjoyed avocado toast and an iced coffee. The ambiance is very chill and there were many individuals there studying and/chatting. The food was really, really good. I will definitely return. I love the cause and I appreciated the cleanliness. One of my favorite coffee shops in Houston. They seriously have it all. They have ideals (they support the fight against sex trafficking), they have multiple plugs (perfect for studying), they have an actual parking lot near by, amazing coffee (I really liked the secret squirrel!), and they host cool events (cooking, yoga, dancing classes) in a separate room from time to time! It's also not too loud when they do host, I was there when everyone was trying to ballroom dance in the other room but I was still able to study. During finals week, it can get pretty crowded though so keep that in mind. Oh and if you don't have a printer, there is one inside that you can connect to! read more

This is a lovely place to sit and read, study, drink coffee (or not), meet with friends (or colleagues), work on something requiring intense (or not-so intense) concentration, in peace. I was warmly welcomed by not only the space but also the baristas at the coffee bar. They allowed me to take my time in ordering and signed me up for a rewards program (yay!). I was impressed with the efficiency of their service, the quality of their coffees, and the overall atmosphere of the coffee shop. I first ordered a Minty Mocha with almond milk, and it was fantastic. The barista even made some fun art on my coffee, which made me smile. I was so impressed with how productive I was in my first hour at 2nd cup that I barely noticed I'd finished drinking my cup of MM! Obviously, I was going to live up to the name of the shop and get a 2nd cup. This time, I opted for a soy latte - also heavenly. The patrons are amazingly kind and were willing to watch my things while I either got up up to use the bathroom or order a 2nd cup. It's the fasting-growing criminal industry in the world, with Houston ranking #2 in the country. Given how big an issue human trafficking is, one would think that there would be a push to stop human trafficking, especially in a city as large as Houston. So why isn't there? Why do so many stay silent? Aside from being a billion-dollar industry, people remain silent out of fear. Fear of becoming a target, fear of retaliation, fear of embarrassment, fear of reality. I could go on and on, but you get the point- people remain silent out of fear. A 2nd Cup, established in 2012, is a local coffee shop in Lindale Park, located in Houston's Near Northside. However, A 2nd Cup isn't just another little coffee shop or café. No, it's more than a café. It's coffee with a cause. Their goal is to raise awareness of human trafficking issues in Houston- and to develop resources that help create a second chance for survivors. Talk about business with a purpose! Since 2015, A 2nd Cup has served and educated over 100,000 Houstonians and have held over 400 human trafficking awareness events. They've spent hundreds of hours working alongside allies to engage the public to take action, and they've given over $112,000 in financial and in-kind donations to allies who serve survivors. They also recently began training survivors in the culinary industry through their new program, Brazen Table. These actions are a testimony to their commitment of achieving their mission to Educate, Partner, and Provide. A 2nd Cup creates a space for awareness, conversation, and empowerment. They collaborate with allies and strengthen their numbers while investing in short- and long-term survivor aftercare. Personally, I love supporting local. I eat and shop local every chance I get. I don't mind paying a little more because I know how valuable my business is to small business owners in my community. However, with a business such as A 2nd Cup, I'm more motivated to give them my business because I see how loud this small business is trying to speak. Our values of community, empowerment, care, inclusion, and action are aligned so it only makes sense that I support them in their mission. A 2nd Cup offers an open and welcoming environment where one can go to work, study, or simply hang out. Delicious food and great coffee!! My boyfriend and I shared our usual flat white with whole milk. The barista at the register mistook "whole" for "oat" but the coffee was great nonetheless! A 2nd cup has plenty of tables and extension cords all around so you have access to plugs. They play music, but not unbearably loud that you can't focus. They offer specialty lattes such as the red Barron (raspberry & mocha), chai fritz (chai & double espresso), Andy's mint mocha (mint & mocha), and secret squirrel (hazelnut & amaretto). For all the vegans and lactose intolerant people out there, they have almond, coconut, and oat milk. They're syrups are house-made with fair trade sugar and chocolate! I'm addition to drinks, they offer breakfast all day, sandwiches/paninis for lunch, and pastries (scones, muffins, croissants, cookies) to snack on. There are vegan and vegetarian options as well. The vegan option is the avocado toast. Vegetarians can enjoy the veggie taco and caress panini. I chose the iced sweet toff latte with oat milk. It wasn't too sweet, and I would order it again. I loved that they don't automatically add a plastic lid or straw, therefore reducing our plastic use. If you need one, they will provide them. There are metal straws on sale for $2.5 as well. They have the best almond cappuccino with coffee art in town! Intelligentsia coffee is my fav but this comes close. I've found very few places that can make the almond foam so thick as here. The drip isn't very good, so if you're looking for great drip coffee, I wouldn't recommend here. The food also isn't that great. It mostly seems pre-made. I'm not even sure if they have a real kitchen. The tables were rearranged to offer more seating which is nice because it was always really hard to find seating. I still think this is a great place with awesome, sweet drinks, some good espresso, and good pastries. It just needs better drip in my opinion. I think A 2nd Cup deserves a 4.5. They have one of the best spaces to work, good hours, a great mission, decent parking, and some of the best sweeter coffee drinks. For all you coffee connoisseurs who also love supporting an incredible cause, look no further to A 2nd Cup. This place should be on every Houstonian's coffeehouse list. Not only you are getting great quality coffee, you are also raising awareness to end human trafficking -sexual exploitation and forced labor - which Houston is sadly one of the biggest hubs in the United States. The I-10 corridor is one of the most heavily trafficked in the country. That's why every time you use their space, you are met with this awareness that we do live in a broken world, where over 30 million people worldwide are caught in the evil throes of illegal human trafficking. That is bigger than the entire population of Texas (20.9 million). But at the same time, just buy buying a bag (or cup) of coffee you know you are actively taking small steps that lead to bigger steps, which can transform our world. And ultimately even buying a bag of coffee could be a protest against the evil and injustice, and a plead and a prayer for God to restore things the way they ought to be. I really recommend just buying a bag of whole bean coffee because they give you a free cold brew or Americano. Great way to try out their coffee, especially since you're going to throw down $4-5 for a latte anyway (am I right?) They had roasted a Costa Rica coffee, but I actually chose the Colombian Coffee that's proudly roasted by Boomtown Coffee for the 2nd Cup. These benefit anti trafficking efforts and also support the Brazen Table, a 2nd Cup vocational training program for trafficking survivors. We absolutely love the full bodied, nutty taste of the Colombian coffee. So good. You can also try their food options like their avocado toast. Another boost for a 2nd Cup is that they have plenty of parking and a ton of open space for studying. It's so open and comfortable with couches near the wall or long wooden earthy tables to share with another person. Solid place! And for a solid cause. read more

Pastries looked good as well. If it was not for the staff, this place would be solid 4 star for me. All hand made items from woman who have been sex trafficked. Bonus. Check out Elijah Rising by the way. 5) Free sex trafficking information discussions and free yoga classes! Check their schedule. 6) Rewards program. Dislike: 1) They don't have Splenda (I have to bring it with me). 2) Being world conscious they serve coffee in paper cups (hence more trash). Both times I've visited, I've gotten an iced latte with oat milk and English toffee syrup (which is amazing - just sweet enough, with enough coffee flavor without being too strong). I've gotten the avocado toast and the veggie breakfast tacos, both of which were very good. In addition, A 2nd Cup is a great study spot. They have free WiFi, plenty of outlets, and lots of seating, and the noise level is generally very reasonable. Another plus is the fact that they have a reasonably sized parking lot (a major problem with a lot of Houston coffeeshops). The overall vibes are also great - I love all of the natural lighting! Finally, I love knowing that, when I come here, my money is going to a good cause!
