Needed a place to study that opened early in the morning and I came upon this gem. I was genuinely expecting a standard coffee place but I didn't realize that they're a non-profit thats helping spread awareness to human trafficking! I also did not know that they would have people come in to speak on the issue and I found it insightful. For those interested, I believe they will have these talks every 4th Friday of every month :) Aside from that, the baristas were very nice! The seating inside is super cozy and comfy and I also liked that there's a lot of outlets where I could plug my devices in. For my drink I ordered an iced Sweet Toff. A 2nd Cup is not just a good place for some caffeine, but it's a nice setting for some group studying, remote working, and nice place to relax. It's undoubtedly casual with a hipstery feel that is reminiscent of something that would be in Austin or Portland. The name is also appropo since I can never get out of here without ordering at least two cups of something. The interior is nice with a bit of a warehouse vibe but lots of natural lighting and a good amount of seating from sofas to communal tables and even covered outdoor seating. Parking isn't a problem and there's It's usually nice and quiet, which makes it a really ideal place to hit the ground running with some laptop action. The fairly fast WiFi is an added plus. Another thumbs up is their affordable prices which are around $5 or less. In the inflated world of coffee and foodflation, this is always a thumbs up. Ironically I end up ordering their most expensive drinks, which are mainly their house favorites ($5.50). The secret squirrel, mochanut, sweet toff,and white mocha, which are all a solid option. Their matcha latte ($5) and lemonade ($3) are refreshing and easy to order on any of our warmest days. Service has also been among their strong suits. They've been efficient with orders, good to point people out to where bathrooms, WiFi passwords, and focusing on their mission of ending human trafficking. Why am I just now discovering their Phoenix Smoothie? It's amazing and I crave it all the time now. Reasonable pricing, super fresh and they make it quick. Love the atmosphere here, I am able to come work, it's quiet and comfortable. You do have to pay for a drink in order to get their wifi password.. only downside, BUT support them! I was visiting my family and wandered into the local shop in the neighborhood. I love a good cup of coffee but love the mission of this place: a non-profit cause to end human trafficking! Hell yes, you have my support! The staff is attentive and friendly. I went in the mid-morning hours so the shop was not packed. The parking lot is small though so I had to park on the street and walk in. I picked up my coffee to go but wished I had longer to stay. It's a great space for working ( as a few were) or catching up with friends over a cup of coffee. The coffee was great too! I got the Sweet Toff and it was delicious. Shoutout to this Black & Female owned coffee shop. I always appreciate supporting places that have a deeper mission, which they are big advocates for human trafficking and helping those in need. I enjoyed my time here with my friend. Lots of open space for seating and not feeling crammed if you want to get some work done. There is a wide variety of baked goods, coffee drinks, tea alternatives, & light bites as well. I love that they have vegan and gluten free options (yayyy). The staff was really helpful with accomodating my food restrictions so that I could eat something. You can get their yogurt fruit bowl sans yogurt, for example, which included fruit they have in season. I also tried their tacos where you can build your own and they have a lot of toppings to choose from. The music was great and they even had a kids "play" area. The parking lot is quite small but you can park along the side of the building. I would highly recommend this spot if you don't want something too overcrowded and can be productive while enjoying delicious treats. read more

This coffee shop has been on bookmark list and happy I I finally made it in. It's very big for a coffee shop with lots of tables. I should have asked if they have wifi available. As I walked in I was greeted and asked how my morning was going, but not in a automatic way. It was in a genuine way that felt nice. After looking over the menu I picked the Secret Squirrel coffee that was really good. It was a mild smooth coffee. My only complaint is that there is only a standard size available. I couldn't turn down a fresh croissant and I'm so happy I got one. It was fluffy and light with a a nice outer crust. A 2nd was a wonderful coffee shop when it was located on 11th - great coffee for a good cause. Unfortunately Wolf Property Mgt bought their building and raised the rent threefold, forcing all of the tenants to find more economic pastures. Now a Starbucks sits where 2nd used to be. Relocating to Fulton on the upper Eastside, I was hoping A 2nd would survive. Unfortunately the coffee service is now mediocre, and they no longer sell food. Today I was the only patron at 9am in what would normally be a packed shop on a Saturday. I hope they turn things around. read more

Houston is one of the largest hubs for human trafficking in the nation. A Second Cup is Houston's nonprofit coffee shop working to end human trafficking. Their mission is fantastic, and their ability to subtly educate, partner and provide is nothing less than impressive. Walking in, you're greeted with local products, and from that point every detail, from the interior decor and interactive tools in the shop, to the awareness events (including virtual and in person survivor led support groups, safety planning and more) tell a story. Oh, and the coffee is damn good too. For anyone working to kick their "corporate green mermaid" habit by supporting local coffee shops with strong missions, this is your spot! read more

I definitely support this store's mission, so having to give it a poor review isn't the most comfortable thing, but I didn't have a great visit. Three issues: First, the americano I ordered was initially prepared poorly, being lukewarm, overly full (i.e. I couldn't remove the lid without creating a mess), and weak (possibly under-extracted, and/or possibly over-diluted). After a few sips, I asked for it to be remade; the second one was much better, though still not one of the better americanos I've had in Houston. Then I got a croissant, and it was waaaay too buttery. I know that for many people there's no such thing as "too buttery", but one's hands really shouldn't be slick with grease after eating a croissant. Third, a half hour into my visit, and about an hour before closing, they started cleaning the floors with a detergent that I found chemically offensive (I have asthma, so am super conscious about such things). At this point, I couldn't stay. All of that out of the way, I will acknowledge that the service I received was warm and friendly, the space itself is welcoming, and the free infused water is a nice touch. A cute coffee shop that's super spacious for studying and parking is easy! I ordered a iced vanilla latte which had a great flavor and is a great place to get some work done. It does get busy during peak times, but I did not have trouble finding a seat. I learned that they are also a non-profit which is amazing and they also sell an assortment of jewelry, candles, and other small accessories at the front of the shop. Stopped by for coffee and wanted to get the avocado toast. Unfortunately they don't have the kitchen up and running yet (as of 10/16/23) so we couldn't order from the food menu. Just bakery items available. I still got a small mocha latte with oat milk and it was really good! Sweet enough without adding more sugar. I didn't try any bakery items but they looked really good! The service was polite and timely. Inside has tons of information and resources regarding human trafficking and I enjoy that getting coffee here helps a good cause. Above all else, they have a lot of programs for victims of labor trafficking including teaching them important working skills. Also, if you ever order food from their kitchen, most of it comes from another skills-teaching venture. As far as a study place, it's overall on the quiet to medium noise range. The place is just huge so feels like there's lots of options for seating. There's enough outlets but might have to use an extension cord-- no biggie. Lots of parking available outside. My only real complaint is that the seating isn't the most comfortable with mostly middle school desk style chairs. All in all, you need to visit this place at least once, especially if you like to work outside of your home/office. read more

Why 5 stars? Because it was great cold brew for a good cause. --- --- --- My time here was incredibly brief, but very satisfying. I normally prefer nitro, but if that's not available, I go with cold brew. That's what I did here, and to be honest, it was shockingly great. Definitely one of the smoothest cold brew's I've ever had. We also ordered some cookies - a chocolate chip, a peanut butter and one with almond in the center. All of them were great and my only regret is that I had to share and they were not all for me.
