A 2nd Cup is not an ordinary coffee shop. It is also a federal nonprofit organization to help spread awareness and end human trafficking in Houston, apparently one of the most intense regions of human trafficking according to the Department of Justice. Because of their mission and cause, I highly rate this coffee shop and applaud their passion to help others rather than help their own business. Besides that, this is a rather larger coffee shop compared to most others inside the loop. Though still on weekdays, tables can still be completely filled. The atmosphere is good for either a study environment (not too loud music or talking) or a chill place to catch up with a friend over coffee. The seating can be uncomfortable depending on which chair you're using as there are not cushions on the seats. I noticed the white round looking ones are more comfortable, while some others do not have backs. This could be seen as good or bad depending on the person, I know some people prefer uncomfortable seating because it helps them focus better while studying (not me though!). There also seems to be plenty of outlets, I noticed some power strips around the middle tables area, which is also a plus for studying. The coffee itself, if you recognize the similarity of the taste, that is because they use the coffee beans from Boomtown, which uses local and ethically sourced coffee farms (another plus). So you can get the Boomtown coffee taste without the smell of cigars! I ordered the mocha while my boyfriend ordered a chai. Although it was just average tasting, I can see myself coming back here often. read more

Great place to grab a cup of coffee and study or get some work done. The place was pretty big and they had a great selection of drinks. There was plenty of seating but it did get busy by the time we left that people were waiting to grab our table. They also have items for sale such as jewelry and shirts. Everyone was friendly and I will for sure return. read more

The large interior space, ample natural lighting, private parking lot, decors, AND the cause that this coffee shop stands for, make this place a solid 5 stars in my book. 10 if possible. The flat white was solid. My friend who got orange juice said it was a bit tart and loved her trail mix. This place is quaint, the energy is amazing!! I'm a picky eater and don't care to really try new things... the young lady at the register was helpful and made delicious recommendations! The chef cooked our food to perfection, the homemade jam was a win for me. I love grape and normally won't use jelly if it's not grape.. but their berry jam is made in house!! A 2nd Cup is an open lay out coffee spot with plenty of seating and outlets. If you want to have a group meeting or work time, this is an excellent space for collaboration! They have creative and tasty coffee options. I have tried their seasonal flavors like lavender and pumpkin. They did not disappoint. I regularly get their Coconut Coffee one or their mint one. I also love that 2nd Cup is connected and invested in the community. They support several local organizations and sometimes have free yoga! Awesome spot! read more

Honestly I love this place and its food and drinks are pretty good, but I think the ambience isn't quite what I need for intense studying. It has a very relaxed hipster warehouse vibe, great for creative outlets, writing, music, some casual studying and work, but I find that it doesn't give me the intensity I need for final exams (LOL, yea I'm looking for something pretty niche, so this may place may be perfect for you!) Drinks: I've gone through a couple of the specialty drinks and I've settled on my favorite, the Chai Fritz! It's chai latte with two shots of espresso. I love the chai flavor, it's sweet without being overkill without any bitter undertones with strange flavors, and the caffeine boost really helps me stay focused longer. Dessert: Omg, I tried their chocolate chip cookie recently and I am in love. At first I was skeptical because the cookies look hard, but they're actually quite soft on the inside with gooey melted chocolate (even though the cookie isn't warmed!) with crunchy edges. I liked this place. I checked out the Yelp page (as I always do) before I went. Nice, semi-quiet, comfortable atmosphere. I'm not really into the fact that they use cafeteria-style cups for cold brew coffee but it has a good flavor. Make sure to add the egg and bacon to the avocado toast; it was just what I needed for brunch/lunch. I was able to go during the week and it wasn't too busy or crowded. Overall, definitely a place I would go back to. read more

Order: triple shot latte in a for here cup (mind half the patrons inside had proper in-house latte cups) The barista makes latte in a to-go cup (no latte art). When we kindly ask, and reiterate the order was for here, barista proceeds to dump the contents currently in my to-go cup in to a in-house latte cup. Unacceptable for an establishment whose main revenue stream comes from coffee, especially when I can go to a restaurant that offers lattes and can accomplish the same. No 2nd cup for me. read more

I enjoy coming here with my husband in the morning to get their lattes. It's a nice, clean, modern shop and it's a good place to study. I love the fact that they also work alongside all of the organizations that help others. Their staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Always delicious and honestly, how could you not come here knowing that your money goes to the important cause of human trafficking? It doesn't get any better then knowing your money helps the city of Houston who has the largest number of human trafficking in the nation which means mostly sex trafficking. read more

A great coffee house in The Heights area of Houston. Food is a little pricey, but I also have to acknowledge how polite and friendly the staff are. They are also very helpful when trying to decide what you want. Next time I go there I'm gong to have to try the chocolate chip cookies I hear they're pretty good. Even with how much seating this facility has it's almost always near full whenever I walk in. And almost always the noise is still kept at a minimum for such a packed coffee shop. It's nice. As for my options I went in and got some Cold Brew, along with their avocado and toast. The cashier asked me if I would like to add either bacon or fried egg to it and in my excitement of hearing about breakfast food (because I love breakfast food) my stomach answered her for me and yelled out "both." That's probably why my bill for just a coffee and some toast ended up being $16. Something still hard for me to justify. To any sane human being I would think that's grounds for at least a one star deduction but my stomach tends to make financially reckless food decisions before my brain could process. It really wasn't their fault I could've said no. But I don't say no to breakfast food. No regrets, it was delicious and basically an entire meal in itself. read more

I'm not much of a coffee drinker, so this review is meant for the tea and study environment alone. Their tea selection is limited, but I don't mind it so much since my top priority when coming here is to get work done. I always stay for extended amounts of time, so I'm constantly asking for water refills, yet the employees never seem to be bothered by this. This place also makes studying easy. There are large windows, so there's tons of room for natural light. It is very spacious and there are plenty of multi-outlets placed on the floor. For a small fee, you can also print, which is awesome. Lastly, I like that they're working towards a very prevalent issue in our community: human trafficking. It feels nice to be able to come to a space with such positive energy and know that your money is going to a great cause. Highly recommend! read more

Needed a place to study for finals, and this place really wowed me! Lots of natural light, lots of seating, very quiet. Advocates for human trafficking awareness which I think is great! First time here and I was immediately impressed at the size of the cafe. It's huge! I was expecting a small little cafe like usual. It reminded me of the cafeteria in elementary school, very open with a makeshift moveable room divider. Since it was our first time here I wanted to try one of their signature lattes. Typically I'm a double espresso/americano type of person, but I was in the mood for something sweet. I ordered their "secret squirrel latte, which was a combination of Amaretto and hazelnut. This has become my favorite coffee shop in houston. The employees are generally very nice and helpful. Always eager to answer any questions I may have, and point me in the right direction. I've never had a bad drink here, it's always been very well made. My partner and I had some pastries today for the first time. They were very wonderful. I also was able to indulge in some of their handmade items that sit in the front of the store. I bought this candle for $14. It smells wonderfully. I've been exploring several coffee shops in Houston and this one is definitely the best one for studying so far. There is a lot of seating and outlets available. Coffee is reasonably priced and there is a big parking lot. I got an oat milk chai latte for about $5.50. Outdoor seating is also available. And on top of all that, it's for a good cause! This cafe is a nonprofit supporting human trafficking awareness. Definitely coming back for more study sessions and to try the chicken panini that caught my eye on the menu. read more

I first want to give a shout out to the owners of this establishment. Houston has a major problem with Covid 19. With many not following recommended guidelines of the CDC, cases continue to rise. I was very happy to see that the entire coffee shop was closed down to dine in customers. Everyone was wearing a mask and the cashier wiped down every surface after every customer. I felt very safe and I thank you for keeping my safety and health a top priority. Now on to the coffee. I order a cappuccino and it was perfect. The coffee is smooth and they followed the correct portions for milk. I typically find coffee shops serving me lattes instead of cappuccinos because they do not property measure portions. The coffee was great tasting and smooth. No need for sugar. I also ordered an egg and potato taco and it was very delicious. Nothing over processed or fake about it. I also appreciate the normal portion size :) Will def be back soon read more

5 stars for the vision behind this coffee joint, and for the passion the volunteers and founders of this organization put into 2nd cup. The place is non-profit and their baristas are all volunteers - their goal is to raise awareness and to raise funds in efforts to eliminate human trafficking in Houston. I dropped by this place on a Sunday morning after hearing about this place from Yelp. I actually had to drive by multiple times before I saw it, as it's actually connected to a church and there is no real sign except for a foldable chalkboard sign on the sidewalk. It's connected to a church called Vineyard in case you have trouble locating it - there's actually no affiliation, but the staff was telling me that the church donated that space to them free of charge and they are one of their big donors. This is just their temporary location until they raise enough money to find a permanent home. It was a bit noisy on a Sunday afternoon as the after-church crowd poured into the place...but I guess thats actually a good thing as that means more business for them :) There are plenty of tables and electric outlets...and a couple of couches. If you're bored or taking a break, you can also peruse a lot of the very nice displays they have up, as well as catch up on events that 2nd Cup or their sponsors host throughout the weeks and months. An awesome place to grab a great drink and support a worthy cause! read more

Found my new coffee place! We had the Secret Squirrel and the Chai Fritz. Loved both of them!!!! Not only is their coffee super tasty, but they are a non-profit coffee shop aimed at raising awareness and funds, cup by cup, for local organizations that fight against human trafficking. This place is spacious and beautifully designed. There is a bulletin board in the center of their huge shop with clipboards that allows you to understand what they and other organizations are fighting for. There is even a tear sheet that allows you to get involved and participate in the many organizations and events around town. read more

I absolutely love the concept of this place. It is super spacious with great lighting and my favorite part was to discover the shower in the restroom. The barista was super helpful. There were a lot of options to choose from but I stuck to my original choice of latte. The place is huge and roomy with PLENTY of places to sit. Even though it was very crowded when I got there on a RAINY Sunday evening, I was able to secure a spot to myself. It was there that I realized that this coffee shop not only has good service/ambiance/coffee but they are a great coffee ship whose main objective is to bring awareness to ending human trafficking. Nice coffee shop, good parking and lots of space to spread out. The outlets are not easy to find in connection with the table. The description states it offers vegan options but that is only on the WEEKEND! If you want some good coffee and easy atmosphere its a cool place to try. Not a fave but it will do if you need it to. read more

Probably the largest coffee shop in Houston. The walls are plastered with what seems to be propaganda, but it's really just the owners sharing their passion about prevention and educating customers about certain human-based crimes. It's hard not to notice or read at least one of the signs on the walls. They had a nice selection of 7 specialty coffee choices (made either hot or iced) and I ended up ordering the popular secret squirrel, hot. I wanted to love it since I enjoy amaretto flavor, but I only tasted hazelnut. I liked the space and seating though, so next time I'll choose either the mocha nut or the iced matcha latte. read more

A cozy and spacious coffee shop. This was in my bookmarks for sometime, finally gave it a try. It's near Ruggles Green and Dacapos. On a Saturday morning, it wasn't very crowded. I had the large sofa to myself. I ordered the Red Barron raspberry mocha and a veggie pita pocket. Honestly, the coffee flavor wasn't that exciting. My friend ordered mint mocha and that was really good! The veggie pita was alright. Their snickerdoodle cookies caught my attention from the display. Helen explores Houston coffee shops, Stop #2: A 2nd cup. Service (4/5): The barista was very helpful and aided be towards the drink I was looking for. Ambiance (4/5): This coffee shop definitely has a warehouse/ chill vibe. I really do appreciate the good number of tables and outlets they provide. Very good to do some work and catch up with friends. Chai Fritz (3/5): One of their specialty coffees, but it is basically a dirty chai latte. Good consistency and tasted good. My friend and I ended up staying for like an hour or two just catching up over coffee. The one thing that stuck out the most though was the actual story behind the coffee shop. A 2nd cup was established in 2012 as a non-profit coffee shop where all proceeds go to putting/showing awareness of human trafficking issues in Houston. Their lattes are amazing! I am not usually a sweet coffee person, but if I'm in the mood for a sweet drink, I like to get their Red Baron, which is Raspberry. Their food menu looks great, but I've never had any. The atmosphere is more study heavy than social. They also have different community events and info on their store. If I am not mistaken their mission is to prevent and raise awareness of human trafficking. read more

Pretty cool place, I've never been to one like it. It has an industrial feel to it with high ceilings. Along the walls, are different stats/info about sex trafficking, how to join the fight, etc. The girl at the register also informed me of who & what 'A 2nd Cup' is and stands for. I came in on a Saturday morning and the place had a great crowd. Plenty of seating, plenty of tables and plenty of parking. I ordered an iced caramel latte with a white chocolate macademia cookie. The macademia cookie was one of the best homemade cookies I've had. Yummmyyy. My coffee was decent. Not much of kick to it and mostly felt like I was drinking milk. Great place to meet up with people. The tables are great and with the high ceilings and size of the shop, it's a great meeting space. read more

Too often, businesses try to combine hipster products with charitable giving, without providing significant value. I am thrilled to say that this is not the case with A 2nd Cup! This super cute coffee shop has a large space (especially for the Heights) where you can relax and get work done (or study, or watercolor, as I saw some people doing one day). The coffee is delicious! As are the freshly baked goods (hello crispy edges on the pumpkin bread - yum). Staff is always really friendly. I'm totally happy to frequent A 2nd Cup and recommend it to all my friends. Because let's face it...if I'm paying for coffee, it ought to be delicious AND helping out with a local cause (human trafficking). Definitely check this place out! Superior to the other coffee shops in the area, plus spacious parking. Really, I like everything about it. read more

Established in 2011.

We are a non-profit coffee shop doing our part to end human-trafficking in our city. Our mission: EDUCATE: To provide an avenue for awareness of the issue of human-trafficking in Houston. FUND: To be a money-making engine to fund after-care solutions for survivors, including housing, mentoring, tutoring, job-skills, and other necessary skills for reintegration into society. PARTNER: To work alongside other anti-trafficking organizations to raise awareness, generate interest, and engage the public to take action in anti-trafficking initiatives.

Meet the Business Owner: Erica R.

Erica Raggett - Founder Erica Raggett graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a Bachelors of Science in Ecology and Systematic Biology and a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science. After learning about the disparity of education between social classes, she decided to pursue educational equity through working with Teach For America, a national non-profit organization aimed at closing the education gap in America. She has worked at YES College Prep, a system of charter schools committed to ensuring that every student, despite their zip code, goes to college. At YES College Prep she has worked as a teacher, District Science Content Specialist and Dean of Instruction. She has also spent much of her time mentoring at-risk girls. She has volunteered with Redeemed Ministries as the Mentor Coordinator, coordinating mentors for survivors of human-trafficking. Erica is dedicated to ensuring that A 2nd Cup become a major hub of anti-trafficking education and action

It was warm, crispy and delicious! Karak tea ($5) - This milk tea drink was made with aromatic spices, primarily cardamom, cloves, ginger and cloves. I was happy to see they used whole milk instead of evaporated milk. The drink was incredibly rich and creamy and tasted great. Turkish delight ($18 / lb.) - This was extremely fresh, soft and chewy, made with cornstarch, sugar, nuts. Some of the varieties I tried had chocolate and/or fruits. The baklava here was fresh made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and held together with some honey. The nut offerings here included, almonds, walnuts, peanuts and a few more. Overall I was impressed with everything they offered here with the exception of the nuts, which I thought were just ok. I'd definitely return if I was in the area.

We also saw different kinds of siopao and planned to come back later to buy some before heading back to San Antonio. It tasted more like a regular white chocolate chip cookie with purple coloring and didn't really have much ube flavor. I also tried the chicken empanada. There seemed to be caramelized sugar in the outside of the pastry, which probably added to the sweetness. I still like it, though it was definitely sweeter than what I'm used to. Red Ribbon's chicken empanada is still my favorite. Later that day before leaving Houston, we came back for the siopao we planned to take home. We finally decided to just buy a couple pieces for ourselves, heat them up in the bakery, and try them fresh. When we saw the price for a four-pack, we were honestly disappointed. It felt expensive for the size. The siopao wasn't huge, and while I like the dough, there wasn't much chicken filling inside. For the portion, taste, and quality, it felt overpriced. Overall, it's probably not worth making another trip back for us. We did enjoy the cassava ube suman, and I like the chicken empanada, but not enough to drive all the way to Houston just for those. If I live nearby, I might come back to try other baked goods, but based on this visit, I'm not sure the rest would impress my palate. I still give them credit for cleanliness and customer service, although we did notice fruit flies on one of the shelves and reported it. The staff was friendly, and the bakery itself was welcoming. At the end of the day, since they're a bakery, the expectation is great-tasting, quality, mouthwatering Filipino breads, pastries ", and kakanin. While some items were enjoyable, overall it just didn't quite live up to the hype for us.
