If you have a German car and don't know about A&B German Car Care, you're missing out. I've been going to Mike since around 2014 or 2015, and I'm pretty sure he's touched more than a few dozen of our cars over the years. That kind of history doesn't happen unless someone is doing things right. Mike is a genius when it comes to these cars. He knows exactly what he's looking at, gets straight to the problem, and explains things in a way that actually makes sense. More importantly, he's transparent. No games, no upselling, just real information and real solutions. Before I found Mike, I was going to another shop near Sac State. Had a DISA valve issue and within a few months something didn't feel right. Brought it to Mike and found out they had charged me for OEM but installed aftermarket. I inherited an older (2003) BMW 325i and suspected it had some fairly major problems - oil leak(s) and so on. Since it was inherited, I knew pretty much nothing about it or its history. Given this situation along with the fact that it was a brand I was unfamiliar with, I knew I needed to find an honest shop that specialized in German cars. I asked around and heard good things about A & B German Car Care. My overall goal with the car was to sell it... and I explained that to them. To me, that meant I wanted to get it thoroughly checked out to identify any major problems... triage and address them... and wrap it up. I didn't want any heroic efforts, and I didn't want to dump a ton of money into a car that I intended to sell ASAP. They understood, and went to work... got back to me with their initial assessment quickly and gave a solid recommendation based on my goals. I typically don't write reviews, but I am compelled to share my recent experience with A&B German Car Care (automotive repair shop), which has been the worst I've ever had. The AC in my son's 2006 Mini Cooper stopped blowing cold air, so I searched for a nearby place to get it fixed and found A&B German Car Care in Rocklin, which had high ratings. On July 12, I scheduled an appointment, and following the diagnosis, I was told that the compressor needed to be replaced due to damage. The job cost was estimated to be around $1500, and I agreed to proceed. However, after the compressor was replaced, the issue persisted. The Shop then wanted to charge $1200 to replace the "fan" and an additional $1500 to replace the condenser. In summary, they were asking for over $4k to fix something that another shop was able to do for $1500 within two days. Furthermore, the car was in and out of the shop for over the course of three weeks. During this time, my husband called the Shop close to 20 times, but most of the time, we received the same response: "We don't know what's wrong with the AC; we're working on it." The lack of communication was astounding. At the end of the third week, when they attempted to change the condenser, my patience with them was " running low". My husband asked to be reimbursed . The mechanic replaced all the changed parts and installed the old ones, and we took the car somewhere else. I documented every call with the date, time, and notes of the conversation because I was considering contacting the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). In conclusion, I would advise others to save their money and go elsewhere for automotive repairs. They either didn't know what they were doing or were trying to overcharge for their poor service. It felt as though they were attempting to take advantage of the situation. I would NEVER recommend them to anyone. read more

I was calling around trying to find a shop to work on my wife's 79 VW bus. Garrett called me back immediately and politely informed me that his shop doesn't work on air-cooled vehicles that old. But he recommended another shop for me that does. I told him that calling me back was huge because he took the time out of his busy day to call a "non-customer" back to tell them "NO". Had my car for 3 weeks and still not able to figure out what was wrong with it. Had it towed to another shop and they had it running in 2 days. I called to get some restitution for being charged over $600 for a new battery, spark plugs, and intake boot. Mike the owner stood by his charges and would not provide any relief. What an awful experience. I brought a car here for a pre purchase inspection (PPI). Talking to the shop Friday about my Monday appointment, I asked what time they would need it so I could decide if I should wait or find a ride home. They told me it needed to be there by 9:00am but had no ETA, or even general window, of when it would be done. I called around 1:00pm and they hadn't even touched it. Why did I need to be there by 9:00am? Finally, at 4:00pm, I got a call it was done and had to figure out how to get back there within the hour since they closed at 5:00pm and the car needed to be gone. Nice to see they have zero appreciation for customers' time and only worry about their own. Next, they told me the vehicle (2002 BMW 325ci Convertible) had an inoperable power top, yet it's a manual top version. Both were available as an option in this year and any BMW VIN decoder would tell you this as well as the fact that there is only one button to release the top versus the standard two that are part of all power top models. Upon bringing this to their attention, they quickly back peddled and said the top had been "converted" from a power top to manual. Umm, unlikely. Just admit you were wrong. Confidence that they know what they're doing... decreasing quickly. They diagnosed an oil leak on the car, yet gave several very different options on where it was coming from. Um, you're getting paid to be specific. Anyone can see oil on the underside of the engine and guess a ton of random places it could be coming from. Why are you getting paid for this? Finally, the front desk person (Terrence?) who was generally rude and quite pompous the entire time, went ahead and gave his opinion about what the car was worth (about half of its actual value). Glad to see the front desk lackey here is now taking it upon himself to become a vehicle pricing expert with no qualifications or experience. How do I know? Because I've been a vehicle valuator, and trained dozens of successful vehicle valuators, for the largest used car dealership in the country for nearly 10 years. All in all, I have little confidence this shop completed a good PPI nor do I have any confidence they care about their customers in general. Rather, they are one of few Euro indie shops in the area and people probably have few choices besides the dealer which is the only reason they have been as "successful" as they have been. Stick to being mechanics and stop giving your uninformed and unqualified opinion about vehicle values. Also, at least pretend like you appreciate your customers and their time and quit acting like the epitome of BMW drivers. read more

After being frustrated with the service at a local Audi dealer, I asked around and received a referral to A&B. Spoke with Garrett and let him know what was going on (defroster not functioning). I brought my car in and dropped it off, they were able to get it fixed within the timeline I needed and had excellent communication the entire time. This repair required work behind the dash and I was worried about squeaks/rattling following the repair but everything is perfect. I was having a hard time finding a shop to take my VW to since the warranty ran out. I had major problems so I asked around and A&B german car care came highly recommended. I went by the shop to check it out and spoke to G . Je assured me they could take care of my issues. The shop was busy but extremely clean . I also spoke with Mike (I think he is the owner) and he made me feel like family. I didnt feel rushed or under educated at all. There is a little bit of a wait to get in but it was well worth it. Yup. He's great until you get too comfortable then he starts to rip you off. For someone who has been in the biz for so long, problems should start to sound familiar with cars. In the beginning of our relationship, he pinpointed the problem right away. As years passed, it became..."I don't know. We'll have to look at it closer." In the end, he supposedly fixed something worth $900. 2 weeks later, the same problem occurred. He then said oh yeah that only cost $250. What?!? He never apologized. He never offered to return my money. Instead, he took more money. In the end, I got smarter. I contacted the dealership. I told them the problem I've been having. Life savers! We are loyal customers for life! We had been loyal customers to another Rocklin/Roseville auto shop for years. We have 4 cars two of which are Jetta's. In October the other shop said we had blown a head gasket and subsequently charged us $2200 for work they said was required. Fast forward to December, when we took our other Jetta in because the cooling liquid was low. That other Rocklin/Roseville shop said it also needed a new head gasket but this time was going to cost "a minimum of $3200" with no explanation on why same car 2 years newer would cost more 2 months later. Insult to injury the other shop charged us $290 to do the diagnosis. So we took it to A&B German Auto. This honest shop not only ran tests and told us that there was nothing wrong with our car but waived the $75 testing fee. These guys have earned their Karma for the year and a customer for life. Not only did he fix my car, but called and offered to do the necessary routine service on it, as it was due - had not even thought of that and more than a fair deal since he had already fixed my car's transmission. We have a 2010 BMW X5 4.8i. The check engine light came on so we brought it to Roseville BMW. There was an oil leak and Roseville BMW quoted us almost $5K to repair the issue. My wife was ready to sell the car, but luckily I found Mike at A&B German Car Care. He got the car fixed within a few days for about a quarter of the price that we were quoted at the dealership. I had my car serviced four times at A&B, so I feel my review is not an isolated incident. Each time I took my car here, more mechanical issues mysteriously pops up. I just had my control arm bushings done by my previous mechanic (he had to relocate to Southern California). A&B told me it needed to be replaced because the previous install was not done correctly and it was "falling apart". I asked how long could I drive it. A&B said it will cause damage to my control arm if I waited too long. About a week later I was back to get the bushings done. Fast forward ten weeks later, my sunroof wouldn't close so I thought I established a good enough relationship with this shop that they might be able to help me. For almost $300 they closed (not fix) the sunroof, it was not a full close, there was about 1/4 inch gap. Still I paid thinking I was building a good relation with this shop. I was surprised at checkout because they told me my control arm needed to be replaced. First, I only paid to close the sunroof, and find out they are creeping around my car for whatever reasons. Second, I replaced the bushings like A&B recommended and now I have to replace the control arm too??? Yes, it was my fault that I took my car here to begin with and it was my fault again that I took it back for the replacement of my control arm. Fast forward another 18 months (and less than 10,000 miles later), I have to replace both bushings again. My current mechanic showed me the parts, and says that it is not less than 2 years old (he suggested much older than 2 years old). I'll leave the readers to make their own conclusions. I spent more than $1,500+ between the four visits. The bushings and control arm was about $700, which I strongly believe was never replaced. I paid for $300 for a half-closed sunroof. A thousand questionable dollars spent. I did not bother to come back and complain, because they probably would only suggest to bring my car back (which is something I vow to never do again). If I didn't take my car to another mechanic, I would not have known how much A&B was draining my wallet. If you are a current A&B customer, I recommend getting a second and third opinion before authorizing any work on your car. If you're a new customer, look on Yelp and call at least a couple of shops so you can price compare, etc. I hope this review helps all parties involved. read more

I've been bringing my e46 BMW 3 Series here for years for everything from general maintenance to strange electrical problems that I had no idea how to fix. These guys are extremely honest, explain exactly what needs to be fixed and what is not an immediate priority (they don't waste your money!), and their nighttime drop box makes it really easy for people who work during the day to find a time to drop their car off. Not to mention their prices are extremely fair, and they've even done some minor work for me for no charge at all! I went to the Audi dealership to get some repairs done on my 2014 Audi Q5 TDI. There were some concerns they brought up and wanted to charge me over $5,000 in repairs. I asked a friend to make a recommendation, and he hands down stated A&B. I've been there 3-4 times now, with routing maintenance, fixes to some of my suspension, and even checking on an annoyingly loud high-frequency noise at certain speeds and loads (acceleration/deceleration). After doing some diagnosing, they weren't really able to come up with a problem, but aided in trying to help figure it out on their own as well. Some research found that it was a failing rear differential. They couldn't find one without dipping into my life savings and buying a new one. We found one at a local wrecking yard, and they installed it within 1 day. They also balanced my tires and found a taco-style dent in one of my rear rims, and made sure it was counterbalanced to reduce vibration on the freeway. These guys took care of my care, knowing that it was my baby, and made sure it was treated like it was their own. One of the techs had the exact same TDI as I do, which is kind of rare. Knowing my care was in the right hands was all I needed, and I'll continue to go back as long as I have this car!! read more

I was a little apprehensive selecting a shop for my FIRST German car for its FIRST service (I've been a Lexus guy for 10 years) and was a sure I was going to have to resort to the dealer.... I did some research and asked around. I called A&B to "interview" the shop not twice but 3 times and finally booked my appointment. What I found was a shop where the owner has established a business everyone would be proud to frequent. Mike clearly has a passion for what he does and more importantly, he has instilled a sense of responsibility and pride with his already talented staff. Long story short, if you're going to buy a high end car, you're going to need people you can trust to make sure it's properly maintained. And if you're going to invest that much (not just monetarily) in a vehicle make sure that the people maintaining it have enough passion, dilligence and education to make sure its done right. Mike (and team) are serious pros and he lives up to his credentials (BMW/Dinan). I went in because a spark plug had worked loose and caused havoc; threading the socket, melted / disintegrated the coil pack and boot and even melted the outside of the wiring harness. It did not look pretty! Mike had me back up and running in less than a day sounding as good as new for a little over $500 (avoiding a costly cylinder head replacement). I got status updates texted to me and photos of the damage emailed plus dropped off and picked up after. I could not have lucked out more finding Mike/A & B German after the traumatic drive the previous evening. I would even consider driving up from the bay area to get work done here. read more
