FIVE STARS. Let me start with the fact that we were going to the Rusty Pelican first. Last minute changed our minds to go to A Fish Called Avalon due to the menu because we wanted to try the octopus and seafood paella. We were seated on the patio and there was a live artist which was so great and made the atmosphere so fun (on a wednesday at that!) Alejandro was our server and gave us the best service we have had in a very long time. Was attentive and made sure we were enjoying every course even up until we ordered after dinner drinks (espresso martinis, SO GOOD HERE) and made sure they were exactly how we liked them. 10/10 recommend coming here as the atmosphere is wonderful and the service was AMAZING. My girlfriend and I were visiting from San Diego for my birthday. We enjoyed Avalon so much that we went twice during our stay in Miami. We were just walking in ocean drive and we were attracted by the music and the look of the restaurant. The drinks were excellent and the quality of the food superb; however, the presentation of it could be improved for some dishes. Our server, Marvin, was very prepared and knowledgeable. The Italian manager even checked in on us many times. We will definitely come back next time in Miami and we recommend it to everyone. read more

Service wasn't upscale like their food. Our server had a bit of a language barrier but the food was really good. It was our first night in Miami and obviously I looked on the help community for suggestions. This place had pretty good ratings and I'd have to agree. We ordered the pan seared scallops and octopus to start- both cooked to perfection! I usually don't care for octopus but this place did a great job. We made a reservation here on a Friday night. The place has beautiful outdoor seating with live acoustic music. Great if you're feeling fancy! I ordered the macadamia encrusted snapper and David had the seafood risotto. My snapper came with a spinach risotto. I thought the snapper was fine, the fish itself was a little bland and the Macademia crust didn't have much flavor. But the spinach risotto was a showstopper.In my opinion it actually tasted better than David's seafood risotto! I could've had a whole dish of that spinach risotto. Overall, 4/5. Love, love love! What a fab restaurant. Everything from the service to the ambience. We dined outside in the warm even air, relaxing to pleasant live music. The band was phenomenal. Every food item we got was exceptional. I have to say, their octopus and calamari is probably the best & freshest I've ever had. The preparation was just amaze. That is saying a lot, as I have traveled all over the world and dined at countless numbers of restaurants. I say well done my friends! Our entrees were spectacular. I think this place was really a 3.5. The drinks were really good. The service was not bad but the poor server was struggling to keep up with all the tables he had. Maybe the auto 20% tip had something to do with it. Anyway the grilled octopus was phenomenal, firm but tender with great flavor. Shared the seafood paella. The seafood itself was very good but the lobster was a bit over cooked and rubbery. And didn't catch from the menu that it's not a traditional paella with rice but with orzo. So it was pretty soupy in texture. When I questioned it with the server he explained this but to be honest was a bit disappointed since was expecting some saffron rice. Came here to celebrate my boyfriends birthday last month. I found this spot on Yelp and was excited to try it out. As expected it is very crowded in the area due to it being on Ocean Drive, but that was not an issue for us. Luckily, they had a valet spot right at the front so we parked there. There was nothing valet about it since we basically had to park our own car and hunt the valet guy down to make sure they didn't tow our car. When we arrive the hostess tells us to wait a few because they did not have any tables ready. That was not an issue although we had reservations. When we finally sit, we are greeted by Vladisla and he was amazing! We placed our drink orders and I decided to try one of his recommendations which was the lollipop mojito. It was really delicious! They did not have much of a bar, but for what we wanted it was fine. For appetizers we ordered the mussels, 12 oysters, and the stone crabs. Let me just saw the mussels were the best I have EVER had in my life. Absolutely delicious. The broth they came with was just spectacular. They were steamed in champagne, chervil leaves, lime zest, lots of garlic and cream. What a flavor profile! The oysters were fresh and so good as well. They didn't have any grit at all! As for the stone crabs, my boyfriend really enjoyed them. For the entrees my boyfriend had the sake & tarragon glazed lobster tails and I had the filet mignon. The lobster tails were served with leek potato mash and Asian style green beans. They were delicious. My steak was cooked perfectly and was served with a side of truffled sweet potato mash. That sweet potato mash was just phenominal. I could not get enough of it!!! For dessert, we had to try their signature pecan crusted pecan pie which has won awards. It was really good, but we couldn't finish it because we were stuffed. To to conclude, the meal was delightful and the servers were very attentive. Came here on a Saturday evening to celebrate a special occasion, table was ready, reservation was easy to make andddd our server added the final touches to make our dinner even more special. Tried the octopus and crab cake as a starter, both were decent... had the paella as the entree, also ok... to be honest I think the best meal here is the fish, i can't remember what type but I know they do a whole fried fish and deep down I regret not getting that. Don't make the same mistake I made! Go for that fish! Not sure if I went too late so kitchen wasn't on point or maybe i just had reeeeeeally high expectations of this place because of all the reviews I had seen. I would say paella was full of seafood, just not the most authentic paella for me. And I'm a huge fan of crab cake so this one I had just wasn't hitting the right spots for me/a bit fishy aftertaste. We ate here on Tuesday evening and it was one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. A friend had recommended the paella, and it didn't disappoint. Easily the best I have ever had! The macadamia encrusted snapper entree was also exceptional. We sampled the calamari and octopus appetizers, which were both cooked perfectly, and the presentation of the octopus was a work of art. The seared ahi and Chilean sea bass entrees were also very good. For dessert we had the key lime pie and bananas foster, which were very good. Our server, Alejandro, provided excellent service. SO disappointed. It's probably the nicest restaurant on the South Beach strip, but it was still not great, and poorly organized. We had a reservation for over a month, but still didn't get seated for nearly an HOUR after we arrived. Once we were actually seated, the service was great and fast--the manager even came over to make sure everything was good. But the food was just meh. I got the escargot and crab knuckles and they were both fine...but nothing else on the menu even looked good. The drink list was also super disappointing...they were all super sugary and not very good, so I just ended up drinking wine. Definitely wouldn't come back. read more

Food was good. This was on Friday night before the Sunday Super Bowl. It was crazyy busy on the street in front of the restaurant. Very loud they set us in front of their performing musicians. We requested to be moved away from them and away from the street so we could talk and hear each other. They told us all the seats were for people that had requested seating in that area. They eventually moved us up there after much consternation. All evening that we were there about two hours in total 50% of the tables sat empty. Oh well they did do the right thing. Food was as I said good. Not over the top. For seafood, location, price and reviews I did expect a bit better. Good place to have a fancy dinner along the South Beach strip. I had the macadamia crusted snapper & spinach risotto - flame. The seared scallops were delicious and came with fresh greens and salty panchetta. Totally recommend both of these! There was plenty of outdoor seating (and live music!!) available when I visited on a Thursday night, but indoor might have been a bit more pleasant considering the heavy heat and humidity that September Miami is known for. I think this is on the ground floor of the Avalon hotel, too- so if you're staying there, this is a good spot to eat without having to walk more than a handful of steps from your hotel room. The only thing that kept this from being a 5-star experience was the somewhat discordant service - my server, Alejandro, was kind and attentive but a bit busy! He checked in with me regularly but I placed my order with the host and my food was brought/water refilled by another server. Their ceviche platter and all of our apps were to die for however, all of our steaks were overdone, then raw in the middle the second time around. I would think so, especially at the price point we paid for a 3 course meal for 8 people. As well, mentioning that your chef won an award for "steaks" actually makes the situation even worse, because that means he should know how to cook a decent steak. Finally, I love your restaurant. The patio is gorgeous and that's why our family decided to come and join you that evening; However, I was let down this time and I can and should express that because now it gives you the opportunity to correct it. Down from palm beach county for a very special event, an engagement. As a celebration, we came to Avalon. My first time on the strip. Its unique. We were promptly seated and waited on with out delay. Drinks were ordered, mojito was my choice. Probably the best muddle ive ever had, actually the first mojito ive ever had. Really tasty, yeah, id fo it again. Other choices were a Moscow mule, prosecco, and a lollipop mojito. All slurped empty. Second round, dome local craft brews. Good. We went bang bang shrimp and crab cake for apps. Tasty, small portions, but they were apps. Very good. Oh I overlooked the fresh bread starter, warm crisp and soft. Tasty. The main courses were lobster, rib eye and macadamia crusted snapper. All the plates were cleaned. I had the snapper. Very very good, it was served in a sauce that added to it. Rosotto was the side, creamy and so good. I did get tastes of the lobster, perfect. If you're stuck in Miami Beach, that's okay. Amidst all the bad food and marginal service, is a place you can actually have a great meal and great service. A Fish called Avalon was excellent. The service was wonderful, right down to the owner of the restaurant making his rounds to speak with us for the night. And the food was fresh and well prepared and the presentation was beautiful. We had a date night appetizers, each one making my smile bigger and brighter. We ordered the tuna tartar, which was perfectly prepared. It had a sweet sauce over it that I didnt think I'd like, but paired with the tuna, it was pretty good. This dish was refreshing. We also had the grilled octupus. What an amazing dish! The octupus was cooked to perfection. It was served over a bed of salad, which really helped to balance the flavors. Moving on, we ordered the scallops and the Escargot. The scallops were...Wow! Those were sweet and melted in your mouth like butter. It was served over a bed of salad and bacon. Everything is better with bacon! The Escargot were a fun dish! It was my first time having snails and I enjoyed every moment right down to dipping the bread deep into the buttery goodness on the plate. We ordered the lobster bisque as well. They separated the bowls since we were sharing. That was really nice, especially once I tasted it. I wouldn't have wanted to share my bowl after putting such succulent deliciousness in my mouth. It was perfect. To finish our night, we ordered the creme brulee. I am never excited about this anymore since I can make it as well at home, but when they brought this out, I was Sooooo excited! My eyes lit up! Not only was the presentation out of this world, but the way they prepared it gave me a new appreciation for creme brulee. It was a edible bowl with a scoop of creme with a bit of the burnt sugar still on top. I don't want to ruin it...just order it! You will be glad you did. It's still a loud area. We sat outside, so it was even louder, but our musician was great and we loved people watching...such characters walking by. Fantastic! Exactly what I wanted for a 15 year wedding anniversary dinner. Not only right on the beach but Security was there so we had no concerns about our personal items. It was about $400 for the five of us but completely worth it. Between the Paella and the kids filet mignon it was superb. From the doorman to the personalize service it's worth every penny. This restaurant was an elegant and sophisticated dining experience on Ocean Drive. From the moment we walked up to the Art Deco Hotel we were warmly greeted by the hostess. They were setting up our table so we were escorted to the bar. The drinks were phenomenal. I had the Sunrise On Ocean Drive, which was not too fruity with a spicy ginger finish. My boyfriend had the Lollipop Mojito; definitively a must when your exploring Ocean Drive. We started with the Spanish Octopus and the spicy tuna tartare. Both were so delicious!!! The kimchee in the tuna tartar gives the dish a more asian vibe and the octopus charred and had a lemon-y vinaigrette that was classic but amazing! The server also suggested we try the Bang Bang shrimp which they are famous for. It was a lovely curry-flavored dish with a yummy yogurt sauce , which we soaked up all of our crustinis in! For entrees we ordered the crab crusted grouper, fantastic, and the saffron risotto, also very delicious. I especially loved the crab topping over the grouper and the butter sauce was so incredible! Finally we finished with the key lime pie- what can I say, it's award-winning for a reason. I loved that it was just-right in tangyness and the pecancrust was the perfect finish! It truly was an amazing experience including the dim lighting of the room to the Art Deco touches in the decor , the music was not too loud but enough that you could enjoy it. The staff was so on point as well-Volker our server was so attentive, a pleasure to speak to and of course always checking on our drinks- PS they carry local beers, we had the MIA Mega mix and the Miami Weiss. The macadamia crusted snapper was a little on the smaller size than I expected but it was delicious. They were pretty good but the calamari and the tiramisu were eh. The drink I had wasn't my favorite - can't remember the name & we had fly's fall in and die in my drink. Everyone knows the location, so let's skip that. Service is very friendly but it doesn't seem like they really know much about the drinks, food or the chef. From what I know this restaurant won some awards so it would be helpful if servers and hosts knew that and were able to make some recommendations. Although, everyone was very friendly. I liked the fact their drinks were not overpriced. $14 each is not bad for Ocean Drive where it's hard to find anything for less than $20. Food was really good. Their Paella was one of the best meals I've had in South Beach. Enough for two people. You can't go wrong with that. I wish upscale restaurant like A Fish Called Avalon had at least "normal" restrooms. I think it would make a big difference for the whole experience. A Fish Called Avalon (AFCA) provided me with one of the best dining experiences I've had...anywhere... in recent memory. For my wife's birthday, my daughters and her spent the night pub crawling on South Beach, and staying the evening at the Avalon Hotel, where AFCA is located. I came to pick them up the next day, and we decided we'd get her a birthday dinner at AFCA before heading home. Everything went right. Reservations were easy to obtain. The charming hostess, who has her hands full with a podium right on the Ocean Drive sidewalk, graciously seated us at an outdoor terrace table overlooking the scene at 7th and Ocean...great people watching show, and the late April weather was PERF! As soon as we were seated, we were immediately treated to delicious warm bread, with cheese and a wonderfully garlicky hummus. Our waiter, Victor, was super competent. If you were to Google "professional waiter" you'd probably see his picture. His service was very attentive, but not in an obsequious way. Soon, we had our drinks in hand....I especially appreciated that they had a locally brewed beer (Havana Lager from Concrete Beach...delicious). The perfect atmospherics were enhanced by 2 live musicians playing laid-back Latin rhythms at just the right volume. Next came the fantastic apps. Creamy lobster bisque, as fine as any I've ever experienced. "Huge" Jumbo Shrimp cocktail, in the classic style. The seared diver scallops....OK, these are THEE best scallops I've ever had! Nice and big, and served with a heavenly triumvirate of sauteed Brussels sprouts, Pancetta (diced pork belly) and citrus mousseline ( hollandaise sauce, only with citrus and whipped cream folded in). Sooooo good! Last, but not least, of the apps was the ceviche tasting. This is a selection of scallops, shrimp, and fish ceviche with Peruvian potatoes, served on a 4 compartment plate...very delish! On to the entrees: I had the saffron seafood risotto. The risotto was very smooth and creamy. It was liberally topped with a scallop, clams, shrimp, calamari, mussels, fish and really fresh roasted tomatoes. One daughter had the sesame seared ahi tuna. You get a generous amount of tuna, perfectly seared, with a nice trio of ginger, soy, and wasabi. Mom and the other daughter shared the orzo seafood paella. Orzo is actually rice-shaped pasta; paella purists might scoff at rice not being used, but I found it to be deliciously pleasing to the palate. It comes chocked full of Maine lobster, shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, calamari and spinach and moistened in a hearty saffron-roasted tomato broth. I really enjoyed this version of paella. This dish for two does cost $87, but it is huuuge and everyone at the table got a chance to share! At this point, we were stuffed, but being that we had a birthday at the table, I felt we should get something. So, I clandestinely approached the manager of AFCA, Pascal, and let him know it was my wife's birthday. Mind you, all evening, I'd been observing Pascal busily going from table to table, to ensure that everyone was happy and things were running smoothly. Yet, he took the time to personally bring out a slice of Key Lime Pie (very delicious BTW) topped with a Happy Birthday sign and 4 spoons....very nice touch! The bill for 4 glasses of wine, a beer, a Grey Goose cocktail, 4 apps, 3 entrees, auto-gratuity, and state & local taxes, came to $424.00 This is a little steep (at least for me) but I felt for the level of service, quality of food, and the atmosphere, it was worth it! I'd definitely suggest AFCA for a special occasion dinner. For out-of-town visitors willing to spend the money, AFCA will really deliver the definitive South Beach dining experience. read more
