We went to a fish called Avalon based upon a recommendation of a friend and the restaurant did not disappoint. Located right across from the beach in a either a hotel or used what was part of the hotel as props. Food was delicious. Really enjoyed the paella for two. The lobster was sweet and succulent; as good if not better than I have had in New England (ma and me). Recommend for couples night out or higher end family occasion. read more

Sorry....very poor experience for us! Waited in bar for a table outside. Bartenders were great and my husband and I had a drink and appetizer. Waited about half hour but that's ok we were going to have table outside. Finally hostess came and got us and walked us outside and around the corner of building to the last table on the side of the building. My husband had to sit and face the parking garages and sat in an area that is a narrow walkway. Waited 20 minutes before we were even brought water, then finally waiter comes over. He took our appetizer order (oysters). We waited another 15-20 minutes when he finally comes back and asks how we are doing?.....I said well....we are not ordering entrees and we would really like to get our oysters. Finally get our oysters....if that's what you call them....they should be named "worlds smallest oysters"...couple of shells looked empty they were so small!....then waited again for waiter, finally he came to table, we asked for bill...that took another 10 minutes. Upon leaving we did tell hostess....to tell the manager.....those tables on the side of your restaurant are "forgotten tables" and you should not even have those as tables!...very poor!....we were very disappointed, upset and hungry!!!....overpriced and underserved! read more

Surprisingly disappointing. The Crab legs were very fishy tasting and the lobster tails were chewy and did not seem fresh either. $130 bill with only water to drink was painful. I have eaten at A Fish Called Avalon many times over the years and I have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious and the portions are quite generous. For Miami Beach, you really value for your money. One thing I also like is they can be quite accommodating. Our first time back in over a year. We are giving this visit two stars only because the food was excellent. But to say that the service was abysmal is a complement. Drinks were slow in arriving. Food came out in haphazard order. Silverware were cleared along with the plates from the appetizers but we had to grab fresh silverware from an adjacent table when the entrees were served. A second round of drinks were ordered but we had to remind the server to find them and bring them to the table. The manager fluttered around but never stopped at our table to check-in. We were not offered dessert or coffee. We were a group of seven and were sitting inside where it was about half empty. If an 18% service charge was not added to the tab we probably would not have left a tip. There are plenty of places to eat in South Beach so next time we are entertaining friends from out-of-town it will not be at his restaurant. read more

I am not really a seafood fan per se, but this restaurant was a recommendation from a friend and I was absolutely blown away. This friend was a former employee of the company and raved about the chef and so he set us up and the executive chef took really great care of us. We got a chance to try a bit of the appetizers and some main course samples and though all delicious, my favorites were the Mediterranean Octopus, Bang Bang Shrimp, and Seared Scallops! This place was recommended to me by the concierge at the Marriott. I was served by a gentleman named Gane (pronounced gon-yay). The service in this restaurant led by this man was impeccable. I ordered his recommendations on the 3-course meal (4 courses if you include the complimentary hummus with bread) which were all in line with what I was contemplating. I started with a grilled octopus over a vinaigrette salad with squid ink and onions. This was definitely a highlight of the meal and was well worth the nine dollar up charge. Then I had a whole fish entrée which was a very delicate and flavorful Mediterranean sea bass. The final course was a fantastic key lime pie that was topped with flower petals. It was fragrant and beautiful and tasty. The restaurant is located on the southern end of the strip on Ocean and seventh. Maybe that's why it wasn't crowded. I am glad I didn't let that impact my decision. This was truly a great meal! read more

I did some research before deciding where we should have dinner while vacationing in South Beach. We decided on A Fish Called Avalon one night. Even though we knew we were headed here, we appreciated not being stalked with their menu as we approached the restaurant (unlike the rest of the restaurants on the strip). We arrived without a reservation and were seated instantly at an outdoor dining table (which we wanted). Our server was Orlando and he was excellent. He had tons of personality, was polite and friendly, kept our drinks full and was patient was we looked over the menu. We decided to split an appetizer, a salad and an entree. He offered to split everything on separate plates for us which was fantastic so we didn't have to ration it out once it arrived at the table. First of all, they serve warm, toasty bread with butter and fresh hummus. The butter was melty from the heat so it spread on the bread nice and evenly! The hummus was some of the best I've ever had. Delicious! Appetizer: Bang Bang Shrimp- I was expecting something similar to Bonefish Grill's shrimp. It was nothing like theirs but it was very delicious. Only three shrimp are served, however. Salad: Chopped Greek Salad. Again, very yummy! Nice dressing to salad ratio. Fresh feta. Lots of peppers. Yum. Entree: Two Whole Lobsters. This is where the train went off the track. I guess we should have known that two whole lobsters for $42.00 was too good to be true. I am not exaggerating when I say it was gross. The worst lobster we've ever had in our lives. And we are lobster girls! It was so bad that we don't know if we'll ever be compelled to eat lobster again. The melted butter couldn't even save it...and that wasn't a tasty dipping sauce, either. I couldn't even order seafood for the rest of the trip because I was so grossed out. I feel bad being so harsh because it was one of the better meals we had on our trip (aside from the lobster) but it was just so, so bad. I feel like maybe it wasn't fresh or just simply wasn't good anymore and shouldn't have been served. The server didn't even notice we hated it because we had two other people taking care of us while he was at a large table that was just seated. (Not his fault, I just think maybe he would have noticed or commented when he saw we didn't eat any of it). Dessert: I needed dessert IMMEDIATELY to get the nasty ocean taste out of my mouth. We split the key lime pie. It was good. Very tart. Nice combination with a raspberry sauce that accompanied it. Overall I enjoyed this restaurant. Like I said, I believe that it's the best, classiest restaurant on the strip...a shining star amongst a bunch of tourist traps. It still had a prime spot for people watching but had better ambiance and better food. There was great team work and when our server was busy, other people helped us so we weren't waiting. Excellent choice! I started out with the shrimp with curry sauce laying on a bed of yogurt. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the fierce flavors meshed so well together! For my entree, I had the macadamia crusted snapper with a spinach risotto. This was the best tasting snapper I've ever had. The fish was rich in flavor and the macadamia crust complimented the snapper well. Finally, the dessert! I had the chocolate lava cake and it was good, but definitely not the best I've had. The cake was too gooey and the raspberry sauce was a bit too tart for me. Overall, this was a great choice for dinner! The service was superb and the food will be forever engraved in my taste buds. Came here on a Wednesday night and the place was packed! Definitely a hot spot to be in Miami. The service was exception and the food was delicious! We ordered the scallops appetizer, tarragon, miso glazed sea bass and salmon.And then key lime pie for dessert. Everything was fantastic! Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for great seafood and service! The only complaint is the place is a little outdated (bathrooms, etc), so I recommend sitting outside if you can! read more

We were in town for one night only. We wanted a seafood restaurant, kid friendly, with the full Miami experience. Our hotel concierge Marjorie recommended A Fish Called Avalon. Let me say she hit the ball out for the park. This was exactly what we wanted. The food and drinks were amazing . They had live music but not to loud, it was just perfect. The service was OUTSTANDING, Marvin and Hugo out did themselves. They were polite, helpful, and made our experience that much better. Delicious food, lovely ambiance! Located in the heart of South Beach right at the beachfront, a friend made a reservation here. We arrived early and were seated fast. We ordered a few dishes such as Mediterranean platter, chicken with a side of asparagus, and some pastas from the kids' menu. The food was so good!!! Grilled asparagus as a side was so yummy I couldn't have enough. The platter was delicious too, and the kids pasta was so good I ordered one for myself. Our friends were also inclined to order for themselves. Kids' portions were huge. Service was slow, nothing to write home about. But the overall ambiance was good and bathrooms clean. Went there for July 4 dinner and of course it was crowded and a bit loud, but that's to be expected. The food is excellent. Starting with the bread and the hummus like dip, which was too good to let sit there while we ate. The bang bang shrimp were perfectly cooked and the yogurt sauce was delicious. You wanted to eat it by itself if nothing else. The paella (with an orzo twist and not saffron-ey) was just delicious too with a lot of seafood and all perfectly prepared. The wine list is a little oddly put together in my mind, missing many moderately priced choices you might expect. But the prices overall were good values for what they had. read more

We had a lovely dinner here on our last night of vacation. They had splendid service all night and a very kind waiter who adored our 2 kids. We had beautiful stone crabs with house made mustard. The manager came over to tell me the stone crab special and we tried them as an appetizer. Had dinner at Joe's two nights earlier and crabs were just as good here. So good, we ordered another round of jumbos and decided to split the rib eye with my wife. Steak was perfect and the waiter had them cut the steak in pieces so that my wife and I could share. Perfect. My daughter ate so much of my steak that I had to eat her kids meal pasta Alfredo and it was delicious too. Haha. As a final touch the waiter made sure that I knew that gratuity was already added so I wouldn't make a mistake and add more. Very classy gesture and classy place. Highly recommend. read more

Who knew there was good food on Ocean? Buried between the cheesy bars and tourist trap restaurants is this little gem. I've been here many times and they food has always been amazing, and everyone I've taken there has agreed. If you're looking for great seafood on the beach, this place is it. The only downside is that sitting outside, while nice, will subject you to the chaos of Ocean drive and the super loud and obnoxious cars driving by every few minutes blaring music that will rattle your dinner plates. read more

I had a lovely dinner last Friday with a dear friend of mine at A Fish Called Avalon. We decided to eat inside because of the heat. Like many restaurants I would suspect in Miami it is quite noisy. It's a busy vibrant city. There was a big birthday in the main dining room which made it harder to have a conversation even with the person sitting next to you. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for a quite intimate dinner. I am not a big seafood fan but the menu was lovely and my friend likes that fare and therefore gave this restaurant a try. For appetizers my friend had crab cakes and I had the lobster bisque. I found the soup to be one of the best I have ever had for a bisque. My companion found her crab cakes a bit salty. For our main courses my friend had the Jumbo Shrimp Scampi Provencal and I had the Seafood Risotto. My server, Luis, was very accommodating with modifying the seafood in my risotto. I believe my friend is not a big lover of salt as she found her entrée too salty as well but she ate every bite! My risotto was fabulous. This restaurant was so generous with the portions. A Fish Called Avalon not only serves you delicious quality food but also doesn't give you French restaurant portions!! Worth every penny. I have to note service was perfection. Luis was our server. He was fabulous. All interactions were just great. Luis recommended a bottle of wine for us in line with our budget that was yummy. We had passed on the dessert because once again we had had plenty of food but Luis wouldn't let that stop us from trying the vanilla crème brulee because I had mentioned that I do "survey" them around the world. He provided it complimentary. I hope he doesn't get in trouble for this here but it did make us a fan of the restaurant and we will recommend it to all of our friends!! I have to also mention a young gentlemen who was a server there...I forgot his name (He is going to audio engineering school in Arizona soon) but when I mentioned we needed a taxi he walked me and my friend out to the street and got a cab for us!! Who does that? He is leaving for school and didn't have to do that...speaks to the quality of people they hire. Lastly, everything served looked absolutely gorgeous. Presentation was exceptional. great location obviously, i like the fact that they have seating not on the street level, and they don't try to "grab" customers on the street the food itself was only ok i don't know, it still surprises me that Chicago has better seafood restaurants than florida what the heck?! you guys are supposed to have an abundant supply of seafood and the dishes are still so uninspired?! we started with deep fried seafood (calamari, bay scallops etc) plate and stone crab the misto fritto needs more seasoning but the stone crab was good i had the seared ahi tuna.... its very average bf had snapper, good but nothing special service is friendly and you can't beat live music read more

After we were rejected at Area 31 (not their fault), we decided to check out the scene on Ocean Drive. Yelpers gave Avalon good recommendations and I actually think I ate here once before. We sat outside and enjoyed the free street theater. Had the stone crab claws for an appetizer (expensive as hell, but good), followed by the miso-glazed sea bass recommended by our server. Very well done and the service was good. Extra points to our server for pointing out the added gratuity after I tipped another 20%; not many servers would be that honest. read more

I was very exciting to visit this restaurant since the restaurant name is catchy and the reviews seem promising, but I seriously don't think this restaurant deserves overall 4 stars. Is it the portion size? the ambiance? Compared to all the other restaurants on Ocean Drive, I don't think the ambiance is any better than the others along the strip. The food was pretty mediocre, I didn't feel like the portions were enough to justify for the $30+ entrees. I do have to say the portions are huge, but I also felt that the server should've done his job of giving us a fair warning about the size of the entrees. For the price, definitely will not recommend this to anyone. read more
