What a terrific find on the west side of Tybee Island. Because it is off the main beach strip (the east side), there are fewer tourists here. There is ample bicycle parking (the best way to get around the island). Sit out on the huge deck (most of their seating is outdoors) and enjoy some of the finest crab stew around! read more

All the food was very good from the coleslaw to the fish and shrimp, all was great, and the crab cakes, well let add, were some of the best ever. Would give it five stars easily if only based on the food. The service brought down the experience though. Great seafood restaurant, with attractive outdoor seating on the water as well as a small interior area. Extensive menu, tiny parking lot, with a larger lot a block away, and excellent service. The crab stew was full of crab as promised and had a nice creamy flavor. The kids chicken nuggets were a good sized portion nicely seasoned and fried served with fries. I was told this place was amazing. I've never been so disappointed before. Dried out mahi that was cold. Broccoli that was never cooked. The fries were cold and soggy. The crab cakes had giants chunks of celery in them that killed the flavor of the cake. The atmosphere was cool. But the food, overpriced and not even halfway decent. For $160 tab, I've never been so disappointed in my life with restaurant food. I will never recommend AJ's to anyone. read more

Upon walking up to the restaurant, we weren't even sure we were in the right place, it looked like a convenient store. But we walked in anyways due to the high recommendations from friends. We were quickly sat, ordered the crab soup appetizer and our beers. Let me say WOW... the soup was AMAZING and perfect for two to share as an appetizer! It was so full of crab meat and loaded with flavor. We placed our dinner order and before we knew it our food was already in front of us, very quick service. I had the buffalo shrimp. It was perfect. The buffalo was spicy and had a unique flavor and came with ranch and blue cheese dressings. I had the vegetables, just ok, and a caesar salad which was good, well better than good but nothing special. My husband ate the shrimp po boy. The bun wasn't toasted and the shrimp lacked flavor, but the vegetables were very fresh. Turns out there's an active duty military discount which was cool too! There has to be a better place to eat near by. The portions are small and the food was maybe average. The food is on par with food I have eaten at Long John Silvers and that is not a compliment. You know you have made a bad choice on restaurants when you have to send the French Fries back because they were raw in the middle. I had fried shrimp and flounder with hush puppies and fries at $23 a plate. I can't wait to get back to the Motorhome and eat a sandwich. My recommendation is try somewhere else. read more

Let me begin by saying our waiter John was amazing! He was very attentive and super friendly. The restaurant is located in Tybee Island. The place was very homey-as if we were locals. The place had several cats roaming around and the view from the restaurant was great! We even saw pelicans flying around. As for the food, can't complain about anything except for the crab soup-needed to be less liquid and more flavor. Everything else was delicious! Where to begin...? Brought my parents here, we ordered chips and salsa, barbecue sandwich, and a chicken salad sandwich. The chips and salsa were Tostitos store-bought chips with a styrofoam bowl of Tostitos salsa, no joke, this is store-bought Tostitos chips and salsa at a restaurant. The sandwiches came out and they were equally as terrible, the barbecue was like store-bought Lloyd's barbecue that they heat it up in a microwave and put on a bun. The chicken salad was terrible, my dad took one bite and put it down, we left some cash and got the F out of there. What a shame - cool location and great views but this was the shittiest food I had on the entire trip by far. The restaurant was so awesome, it has the feel of a down home little diner but with alcohol and the the drinks are strong, good and in budget so you can't go wrong. Bathrooms were clean! We sat outside on the porch area and the food was amazing!!!!!! The price was on point and I just can not get over this awesome place. We went here for a girls night and it was the best one yet. It's days like today that I'm so grateful to live in this beautiful area called coastal Georgia! We were able to get a dockside table on this overcast, pleasant day, and the gnats were held at bay by the gentle breeze - thankfully! I've eaten here many times, and I almost don't need to look at the menu. Their crab stew was creamy, delicious, and as always, loaded with local blue crab body and claw meat. Honestly, it's some of the best in the Savannah area. My posted picture says it all! Additionally, today I opted for the Buffalo Shrimp appetizer. I enjoyed this app of a dozen fried, buffalo sauce doused shrimp served with your choice of blue cheese or ranch sauce and customary celery garnish. Fortunately for me, the mild heat of the buffalo sauce didn't hide the flavor of the shrimp. If you love super hot buffalo heat this may not be for you. My husband ordered the fried flounder and oyster plate. As usual, he thoroughly enjoyed! There's nothing special about their fries, however. They have a nice selection of local craft beer to domestic and import beer. Plenty of umbrella beach drinks and martinis to choose from as well. I noticed an AJ's Loaded Bloody Mary being served and this cocktail beauty looked like a meal in itself! Please note that this island restaurant gets packed during the heavy tourist season, and unfortunately, the service can get slow - even the cocktails. On another note of advice, I never order bready hoagie seafood sandwiches or Alaskan King Crab at AJ's. read more

This was the worst meal I have paid for in my entire 66 years. At the cost of forty dollars, I and my husband received: a dry tasteless piece of "blackened" mahi served at less than room temperature, a small side of carrots that were cold ( this was described by waiter as a vegetable medley), and a tasteless cold hushpuppy. Service was slow. I'm assuming the relaxed atmosphere, on the dock, is a draw to locals. We were seated in the exit area, not even on the dock. Food was good, the staff at the bar, where we were sat, were very nice. We got there about 8:30pm, and they barely let us in, we had to wait to be seated at the bar even though the place wasn't full, and there were several tables open that just weren't cleaned when we were sat at the bar. A friend had recommended this place to me as he had visited Tybee a lot as a kid, he said it was the best seafood on the island, however there didn't seem to be that much seafood on the menu for this to be a seafood type place. I got the scallops and they were good and a decent size, my other friends for a caprese salad and the seafood soup, both said that they were alright. I don't know if it was just because they were about to close or what but it was like they started prepping to close before we ever even got there. Again the staff was friendly and the food was good, but for it to be a Saturday night, on a tourist island in the beginning of June, they were ready to close at 8:30, it just seems incongruous to me. If you're looking for a place with a lot of seafood options I would suggest looking at other places, but this is a good restaurant, just maybe go for early bird hours. read more

This place is definitely a cool spot for a beer, but the food left a lot to be desired; you're definitely paying for the view. We ordered a blackened Mahi Po-Boy ($15)and a combo plate with fried oysters/flounder/a couple of hush-puppies ($19). My Mahi was super dry, while the combo plate came with 2 small pieces of flounder and 4 fried oysters. The food took quite some time to come out, but they had a warning stating it could take up to 45 minutes right on the menu so we weren't too surprised. Our server was very nice and even brought us out to-go drinks. All in all, it's a very cool tucked away spot for a beer, but I don't think I'd come back for the food. read more

We visited AJ's for the first time since the pandemic began. Our prior visit was pretty good that we recalled. So we decide to visit again, this time we were extremely disappointed. The soup was cold, the fish that we had was warm and tasteless. Did not taste blackened or grilled. Everything was subpar, way subpar! But to top it off my wife ordered the "super" bloody mary. Yes it was loaded with all kinds of stuff but that did not make it good. It had no taste at all, I don't even believe there was alcohol in it. My wife feels "it" after one bloody mary and she felt nothing. Way overpriced even if the food was average which it was not. Quite a shame we wasted our Saturday evening here. We will not be going back! Should have went to the gourmet hot dog place! The only good part of our experience was getting a Rita's Water Ice on our way back home! read more

This is really hard to understand as it is a seafood restaurant. The fries had been cooked sometime earlier so were less than lukewarm, greasy and limp. The coleslaw had obviously been made a while ago as the purple cabbage was bleeding into the rest of the slaw; it was flavored as sugar water. The lady behind us complained about her shrimp and grits, so I guess I wouldn't recommend that either. After 70 bucks, I returned home hungry. read more

Many people boast about how this is the best place to watch the sunset (I personally disagree) but if you want to do that, you'd better make a reservation early in the day. I've only been lucky enough to have food from here one time and I wasn't too impressed for a restaurant that seems to have some of the best reviews on the island. Trying to get a table here for a small group is already hard so I can only imagine the struggles a large family goes through. The restaurant itself is somewhat small, and there's little to no parking. A wait time for a group of 3-4 during dinner rush in the summer can be up to 2 hours. And if there's even the slightest chance for rain, they close the outside deck, making the wait so much longer. I'd recommend just coming here for lunch if you're desperate to try. The food -- nothing special. I had fried oysters and for the price, I excepted a little more food than I got. The hush puppies were decent though. read more

The mashed potatoes were only partially mashed - I like lumpy mashed potatoes but these had large chunks and came out of the kitchen cold. This is a great little seafood spot if you are on Tybee Island. We stopped in for lunch on a rainy holiday weekend. Our server was attentive, and the food came out quickly. We started off with the spinach and artichoke dip. A-J's version is a bit different than what you are used to. They deep fry flour tortillas and sprinkle them with seasoning. The dip is extremely cheesy and light on the artichokes and spinach. Perfect for a cheese lover. I got the fried shrimp platter as my entree. You get a dozen shrimp and a side item (fries for me) for a reasonable price. The remoulade sauce is very good so I ate it on everything - shrimp, fries, and the hush puppies. Fortunately, they have plenty of the remoulade sauce so I didn't feel bad using so many containers. Parking is a bit sparse out front (only 5 or so spots), but they have more parking down the street. We arrived during a downpour and were fortunate enough to grab a spot right in front of the entrance. Enjoy your meal on the covered patio if you can - it was great sitting semi-outside in the rain with the water under your feet. read more

The Crab Stew was creamy and very flavourful with lots of crab meat YUM... The Fried Founder was cooked to perfection with a light and crispy crust.. We got seated right away nice table outside on the deck. Got some hush puppies to start very good and not greasy. Salads were very fresh and generous in size. Can sub for a side with dinner for a few bucks more. I had the special ribeye steak which was excellent. Well cooked and seasoned and the veggies were excellent. My wife had the bacon wrapped crab meat stuffed shrimp which were delicious according to her. We then sat out on the deck a bit longer enjoying the live music they had for the evening.
