My family has used A Kline for our candy since I was a child. A Kline has always been one of the most essential parts of our holiday traditions. Over the past four years, they have let us down repeatedly. It is heartbreaking to see a once-mighty business decline so completely. The owner should be ashamed of herself. She squandered all the goodwill that others had worked so hard to build over the years. There will no longer be chocolate lollipops on Halloween for the neighborhood kids. There will no longer be a local business filling my family's Christmas fudge order. The once-bright shop is now a dark and dreary place. Most of the candy jars are empty. The shelves are barren. Due to an inept businesswoman, it's time to stick a fork in this once mighty candy shop. Don't ask them for anything. Their apathy towards their customer is alarming. read more

I was sorely disappointed by the barren shelves in this shop today. It looks like they are selling what they have left in stock so they can close this location. The clerk told me they had been waiting for some time to receive a shipment from their other store in Redlands. They also charged me over $1 to use my card, but couldn't take a $100 bill to pay for the chocolates I bought. The chocolates are delicious, but the customer experience needs work. read more

The customer service is over and beyond 5 stars. Their selection of chocolates, candy and display of gift options was also 5 stars. Sadly, the chocolate that I purchased averaged to 3 stars. The dark chocolate almond clusters were delicious. The dark chocolate peanut butter and jelly cups had me wishing I had purchased more. The dark chocolate molasses chips and the toffee brittle was good. I liked the amount and taste of the dark chocolate that surrounded the molasses chips. The dark chocolate honeycomb was very hard. It had the consistency of a jaw breaker. I ate around the honeycomb. The dark chocolate was delicious! It is too bad that I ended up throwing the honeycomb away. I'm too old to eat anything like a jaw breaker. The dark chocolate nougatine was not something I would purchase again. I ended up throwing them away after my first bite. They had a wonderful selection of different types of candies. I liked that it was not self-serve. During this horrible pandemic, it is nice knowing that the only hands that have been in the candy jars are the hands of the sales associates. They also had numerous shelves of gift options like stuffed animals, bags and boxes of pre-packaged candies. I'll be going back here for their dark chocolate peanut butter and jelly cups. Super cute local chocolate shop! I was able to pick up everything I needed for my family's advent calenders in one stop. I even got lucky and was able to pick up licorice-all-sorts (my husband's favorite). The prices are fair for a local candy shop and I always recommend supporting a Mom & Pop. BONUS: I was able to use my cloth bags for the loose candy instead of the plastic sleeves! Because of COVID the cashier measures and handles the candies with gloves, masks are mandatory, and there is distancing markers on the floor. I wanted candy the other day, and there aren't very many candy stores around anymore. However, A Kline is right around the corner from my house. I've passed it a few times, but never had the opportunity to stop it. It's a cute little store, and definitely a place to hit up for chocolates. They have other candy like sour ropes, licorice, and jelly beans. I also saw specialty chocolate letters and chocolate covered Oreos. I ended up getting several items including chocolate covered Gummi bears, they're my favorite candy. Some French delight chocolates for my husband, similar to See's Bordeaux bars. Some milk chocolate honeycomb for my mother, and some dark chocolate English toffee for my husband's mother. Also some truffles. The sales lady was very nice, and helped us out with different sizes, and how to pick out candy that's been handled differently during the pandemic-- basically, you can't help yourself, but they'll definitely get it for you. The candy was so delicious, and much less expensive than I've found out other candy stores. All in all, we'll be going back, even if it's just for the chocolate Gummi bears. read more

I vacillated over how many stars to award this shop. In terms of its store displays, it should get 10 stars..... lots of color, lots of displays all very cute, neat and inviting, especially with all the Easter decorations abounding (when we went). VERY cute. They have an entire wall with gift-type items, too, not just candy. With as much chocolate (and other candy types) as this store has, we only tried a couple of their truffles. I don't know that they were the best that I've tried, but they were good enough. I'd like to try other chocolates that A Kline offers to see what I think of their product, but for now, they get 4 stars for the chocolate quality and flavor. I really loved the appeal of their displays. Nicely laid out for such a very small store. read more

I really like this little independent boutique - Consistently good truffles, wonderful and super helpful staff - though that's not the reason I keep coming here. I stop by here twice a month to keep my candy jar at home stocked, and I've made a habit of bringing my mother a box of truffles at the start of each month. My little ritual starts with entering the store, and announcing my presence to the staff. I'll tell them I'd like to get a box of a dozen milk chocolate truffles - and I ask them to walk me through the options of what is currently available, which are new, different, and such. More recently, they introduced a truffle based with a cinnamon spice - based on a Mexican chocolate - which was absolutely divine. I made sure to get three. After the box of truffles is completed, I get their assistance in getting the super heavy glass jars of chocolate kept on the right side of the store as you enter. These 15 pound jars of chocolate carry just about everything you can think of - I go for the same thing every time - half a pound of the Dutch Mints, half a pound of the Irish Creme cordials, and half a pound of the Bourbon cordials. Yummm. Yeah, its a pound and a half of chocolate - and I go through it in a month - yet somehow I manage to keep my 180 pound weight. I think the exercising for two hours a day thing helps with that... The staff rings me up - they're always so pleasant, asking me how I am; how my mother is (amazed they remember her, considering she hasn't been in with me for a year!), and I pay. $4 for a little bag of gummy worms and swedish fish? So overpriced! Some of their chocolates in the display case looked good but their bulk candy sucks. It's all in big jars that you have to awkwardly carry up to the counter to have them weigh out. What a pain. As much as I love to support local shops, I'd rather just go to the drugstore next time and buy pre-packaged candy.. unless of course I'm looking for some handmade chocolates then maybe I'll give this place another try. This chocolate store has every candy dipped in chocolate--something I very much appreciate. My favorite is definitely chocolate gummy bears. Let the chocolate melt off the little bear in your mouth, thinking he might get away with his life, then bite into the bear! Haha! They have all of their candies displayed in glass barrels on shelves, and you bring the ones you want to the front of the store and say how much you would like by weight. This is nice because how much money you have in your wallet can control how fat you get (I am usually pretty broke). They also do truffle-y stuff, sugar free stuff, and massive valentine hearts and gift baskets. Lots of holiday themed baskets and candy. I came here the other day and asked what kinds of beans they used to make their chocolates. The girl at the cashier didn't know. So I asked her what kind(s) of base chocolate they use to make their final product, and she would not tell me because it was "a secret". Then there was an awkward silence, and I almost left. But I felt bad because I really wanted to try their chocolates and I like supporting small businesses. So I gave it a chance and gave them the benefit of the doubt. I got their truffles and enjoyed them a lot. This is where I struggle a little with giving the place stars, because I feel like the product is good, but the store layout and the customer service training could use a makeover. You see... being fully aware of what a prick I can be when it comes to chocolate making, I was expecting A Kline to be a luxury type of boutique chocolatier. I mean... they claimed they make their own chocolates (as discussed with the cashier), but I didn't see any chocolate making equipment in the store. It also didn't help that the cashier didn't know what cocoa beans they used, because it suggested they had limited knowledge of the flavor nuances between a criollo, trinitario or forastero bean. Not only that, but most chocolatiers I've been to are never shy to mention what base chocolates they use (because even if they gave that away, the proportions make it different). After all is said and done, I do think they have a reasonably good product. It is very yummy and creamy. But I think with boutique chocolatiers, cashiers have to act like experts to educate the customer about the nuances in their product (much like how a sommelier helps customers understand wines). That would show their passion for their product, and get the customer interested. Chocolates: 4 Chocolate packaging: 3.5 Decor: 2.5 Customer Service: 3 I do think A Kline reminds me of a mom & pops "gourmet" chocolate place you'd find in Solvang. If that's what they were going for, then they accomplished their goal (it'd make sense considering it IS in Claremont... aka suburban white retirement Presbyterian neighborhood). But if their goal was to build a luxury brand image for themselves, there is still a long way to go. read more

It's very expensive but the chocolate is not that good. The only reason they get two stars is that their homemade caramel is delicious. However, the chocolate itself is borderline chalky and is less appealing to eat than a pack of Dove chocolates from your local grocery store. I was very disappointed in the quality of chocolate here. I got a large milk chocolate peanut butter cup, a sea salt caramel, a piece of English toffee and a lollipop for my daughter- these four small items cost me $9!!! Granted, the lollipop was $3.25, but $5.75 for three pieces of candy? That's ridiculous, even for Claremont standards. The sea salt caramel was tasty but I could tell that the chocolate was not that fresh; the peanut butter cup was barely edible, as the chocolate was also not very fresh or of high quality; the toffee was again okay and in no way impressive. All in all, the quality of ingredients seem to be lacking a lot, as if they are using cheap chocolate and ingredients and still charging crazy-high prices. I prefer to support small businesses and have been trying to do that since the economy tanked but I will not support A. Kline because they just don't have a good product. Sees candy is so far above this place, so I suggest you head there instead- at least you can get a half pound of fresh, high-quality candy at Sees. Another thing that I noticed right when I walked into the store was that flooring was carpet and that kind of grossed me out for some reason. Cheap, dark-green carpeting in a place that's supposed to be a high-end chocolatier is not going to score points for ambiance, that's for sure. read more

This is a cute little place that also has other nick nacks that you can buy for graduations, mother and father's day, and so forth. My friend wanted me to try the chocolate covered banana and it was good but was after the banana started to defrost so did the chocolate. The pink lemonade sour belts are a must purchase. Most of the candy is in jars. You carry the jar up to the counter to get it. I got my candy by the dollar. The employees were friendly, which made for a great shopping experience. Ashley, who helped me, was patient as I purchased all my items. I've been here a several times and have also received A-Kline chocolates as gifts on a couple verrrrrry happy occasions and the chocolate is just phenomenal! The store layout is cute and I've always received impeccable customer service on my visits. It's usually been a blonde girl at the counter and she's very sweet and helpful, especially if you're shopping for gifts (which you should do here because you can't go wrong with a box of these!). Without a doubt, the red velvet fudge is the greatest fudge that was ever invented/will ever exist. Salted Carmels---to die for (I would literally commit felonious acts if someone were standing in the way of my salted Carmels). Actually, every truffle I've tried here is delicious. Their turtle-type candies are out of this world because the nuts are always fresh and--the major ingredient--their home-made caramel ties it all together. It is a small shop with a small town feel. I noticed there hasn't been any recent reviews. well anyways, I was looking for a place that had sugar free chocolate for my grandma who's a diabetic. I've seen other places but they would have a very small selection. this place has a nice variety of sugar free chocolates and from what I heard from my grandma, she loved them! wasn't sure if she's like them so we went with half a pound. I will be returning for valentine's day and other special occasions and probably will be getting the pound next time! lol but its a very nice clean small little place, the girl who had helped us was very sweet. they have a nice selection of candy some I've never heard of, and they have premade packages of candy or do what I did and make your own. it's like a smaller version of sees candies but with better sugar free options!! read more

I have buying chocolate at A Kline Chocolatier since 1986 when Alene Kline still owned the store. She took great pride in her confections and it was by far the best in all the L.A. area. I meet a friend for lunch in the Claremont Village once a year and afterward we stroll the area, visiting our old favorites, including A Kline. We were here a year ago and I had bought a dark chocolate haystack; the memory of the deep flavor of the cocoa and the sweet, tender coconut remained. I was so excited! Today I was especially interested in going for some dark chocolate for my husband's birthday tomorrow. I bought a box of assorted dark chocolate and nuts with several of the haystacks, but was horrified after my first bite. The dark chocolate no longer had that deep, rich flavor but was incredibly sweet with an artificial, powdery aftertaste. I could not taste any coconut, but whatever it was it tasted old. I had purchased a box and a couple pieces for myself while we walked the village. I was looking at the peanut butter cups and asked the (very nice) girl there if there was any gluten in them. She said she didn't know but would check the ingredients on the peanut butter label. When she returned she informed us of the ingredients: peanuts, sugar, oil, and high fructose corn syrup. I was shocked and asked what kind of peanut butter it was and she said, "Just a generic brand." Whaat? They're using cheap, artificial ingredients and charging high prices. I remember what chocolate here used to taste like and I am hugely disappointed to find A Kline Chocolatier is now just as bad as the cheap candy (you really can't call it chocolate) you find in drugstores. See's Candies are far better than what we had today! I eat a traditional diet and eating sugar is a special treat. I would never waste the calories, or my money, here again! read more
