A + lock and key is fantastic! They are conveniently located in the Palama Market parking lot so there's almost always lots of free parking. If not on the first level when you come in there's additional parking upstairs. I live in an older building with older locks. I tried going to Walmart and Home Depot to get duplicates of the old house keys but they just don't have the blanks. This place has everything from mailbox keys to car keys to home keys. The service is very fast as there AR usually no other customers. He produced two copies of the key I wanted in less than a minute. This place is cash only so be sure to come in with cash and not $100 bill because he really doesn't like large bills. You get a big smile from him if you put the change and a dollar into his tip jar. I wanted to select some of the nice, colorful patterned keys that were available but I couldn't see well enough so the incredibly nice man took every key that would work and put them on the counter so I could make a selection. We needed to get a spare key made for the apartment so we went to Home Depot figuring they probably had the key we needed. They had a blank that was the same shape as our key and carved a copy out quickly. Unfortunately, when we got back to the apartment, the key wouldn't fit. Apparently the shape of the key was the same but the grooves that run down the spine of the key were different, our key had wider grooves. Were we out of luck? Was this a special key that normal vendors don't have access to the right blanks? The next weekend I searched Yelp and thought A+ Lock & Key looked promising so I headed over. The place is pretty small, just a little hut standing in the corner of the Palama Market parking lot. I get to the counter and with old school Japanese music playing on a small radio, an older Japanese man stands at the counter and nods to me. I tell him my dilemma and he starts saying something but I couldn't really understand because of the heavy accent. "Something, Something, Something, Master, Something, Something." Me, "Huh" "Something, Something, MASTER." He could tell I had no clue what he was saying so he takes my original key and Home Depot duped key and opens a big book with pictures of keys, kinda like a key bible I guess. He takes the duped key and points to a key in the book, then takes the original key and points to another key in the book. Then he says, "Wrong key, right key". "Oh, Ok, can you make the right key?" He sort of grunts, takes the original, turns his back and goes to his work bench. Then like a stealthy ninja or a precision swordsman..."fwip, fwip, fwip". He turns back to me and hands me a new key. That seriously took seconds to make. I paid him (I think it was about $2.75) and went back to the apartment. Like butter the key slid in the door knob and dead bolt and turned effortlessly to unlock. When my 2013 Chevy Cruze FOB buttons were completely worn out, the dealer was going to charge a whopping $200+ to replace it. No thanks! The owner/worker blamed the lock. If at all possible, bring the lock to test the keys before leaving. I've made keys here a number of times before and have never a problem with the KEYS. He's quick and usually there is no line. His customer service skills are lacking to say the least. He doesn't answer questions and tosses the finished key on the counter. I've seen comatose patients with more personality than this guy. He has a wide selection of blanks that the big box store don't carry and his prices are reasonable. I left with my keys and found out that ALL of them did not work correctly. There was a audible click and resistance when turning the key so I had to go back. I brought the lock and presented him with the lock, the original key and the defective keys he had made a few days ago. He tried the keys and stated, " This is a junk lock. The lock is bad." First of all, other than him asking for payment, this is the first time I've heard him talk. It was a BRAND NEW lock; which is why I came to get keys. I told him that I didn't want a refund. I just wanted him to fix the keys. This guy actually used the BAD KEY to make another key for me. I've never seen that before. I brought the original key with me and he uses the bad one... UNBELIEVABLE. He finally fixed the keys but several of them still make a clicking sound when I turn the key and he states, "that's normal." I just shake my head and re-test the keys. One still doesn't work at all so he finally uses the original key and fixes it. If at all possible, I will try to go to another locksmith. I should have gone to, Saltz, but I've never had issues with guy before. Lesson learned. read more

I don't know how many of you will be able to relate, but sometimes I forget my keys. Ok...maybe it's a *little* more than sometimes when it comes to my office keys. But what's a guy to do? Between house keys, car keys, office key set #1, office key set #2, etc., there's just too many damn keys to keep in my pocket. And it's not like us guys carry a purse with us where we can just dump all the contents of our pockets into. So, having said all that, I sometimes un-join my keys and only carry certain sets with me depending on the day. And for the most part this is a pretty sound solution to my problems. The exception, however, is when I find myself needing to make an unexpected stop to my office. So with this dilemma in mind, I'm left with two options: 1) bite the bullet and just carry 10 lbs of keys in my pockets everywhere I go, or 2) be smart and make a copy of the one key in my work sets that I need to get into my office. Decision should be easy, right? And this is where my adventure started. Gather 'round, children, it's story time. Living next door to a major hardware store (rhymes with Pity Hill), I thought this would be a piece of cake. I saunter into the store, make my way to the key shop, and happily asked that the worker please make me a copy of my office key for me. She takes a good look at it, placed it into the machine, and everything's good, right? Ehh! Wrong! "Sorry, sir," she replied, "we don't have this kind of key." Whaaaaaaaaaat?! Slightly dismayed, I thanked her for her time and made my way down to another large store (this one rhymes with Halmart). So I make my way to their key shop and ask if they can help me. And what is their reply? Sorry, we don't carry that kind of key since it's not an everyday common shape. Arghhhhhhhhhhh! Now, I'm a bit annoyed, but hey, it's Sunday and things could be worse. I figure I'll try one more time since I still have one more strike before I strike out. I remember always seeing this small kiosk operation right outside the Makaloa Palama Market, so I head down the road to try my luck, Well, Lady Luck was not on my side as A+ Lock & Key was closed. Sigh, it just wasn't meant to be. The next day, i decided to take a break from work for a bit and went back to A+ to see if my luck would change. Thankfully, I see that the one man operation is up and running and I handed him my key to see if he could make a copy. Without a word, he turns around and looks at his elaborate wall of uncut keys and grabs one off the rack. Now I swear this isn't hyperbole, but from time I reached into my pocket to grab my phone and check in on Yelp, and then reach into my back pocket to grab my wallet, which couldn't have been more than 30 seconds, he was done. HUH?!?!? I probably had a legit dumbfounded look on my face when he handed me the two keys, and it probably only got worse when he told me the key and the service totaled about $3. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I found a key guy for the rest of my life. The only thing that keeps me from giving A+ Lock & Keys 5 stars, and maybe it's petty of me, is the fact that it's not open on the weekend and the parking lot there can be a war zone. But all things being considered A+ Lock & Keys definitely lives up to its name. A+. read more
