It's 95 degrees today (a Sunday), and our heat pump wasn't working. We're on A.P. Mathews' maintenance plan, so I called them, and Paul showed up in under 90 minutes. He's been showing up for us every six months for years, and I'm always happy to see him, but wow, was I happy today when he'd fixed the problem and the AC was working again, free of charge! AP Methews asks for customer reviews on their company website link to Google! AP Mathews HVAC work is very much a mixed bag. Installed a new HVAC system for me in Oct. 2020. Some of the new HVAC system worked and some of it did not work at all, and as of 9/6/24, 4 years later AP Mathews is still working on part of my HVAC to make it work as it should have worked in Oct. 2020. AP Mathews does NOT do any quality control at the end of the job, they just pack up and leave and wait for the customer to call in service requests. During these 4 years I had them back about a dozen times to fix multiple installation &/or service problems, and sometimes multiple times for the same installation &/or service problems. AP Mathews HVAC work is SLOPPY AND UNSKILLED. Trouble shooting never ends at AP Mathews. The straw that broke the camel's back, 4 years and 3 service calls to trouble shoot and repair a disconnected air duct. AP Mathews service & office management is just "catch as catch can". Office manager (Gerry) uses "post it notes" to manage by and the service tech's laugh at her for it. One star is well deserved. read more

Overall, I was not completely satisfied with this business. My outside heat pump was making a God awful noise and I chose A.P. Mathews based on their awesome Yelp reviews. I called and the soonest they could get me in was 2 days later-- no big deal. They put me down for the first visit of the day, which was quoted to me as between 8:00-9:00 a.m. I waited, waited, waited... finally about 9:30 I decided to call and make sure I had the right day and time. I was told my technician was held up at another job and would be by after... I thought I was told I was the first appointment of the day? Okay.... Guy finally came out after 12:00 p.m. (so much for being the first appointment of the day!) and assessed the problem, which was pretty much what I knew it would be. Good thing I had this taken care of on my day off from work. In the process of fixing said issue, he managed to break the knob to the outdoor power switch and had to replace it, resulting in an extra charge for the part, as well as an additional hour charge for service. After all was said and done, I began to notice that my outdoor unit was very loud since the pump was replaced. It was so loud I could hear it from three floors above the unit, not to mention we live in a townhouse so our neighbors can probably hear it also. We thought maybe the new pump was more powerful than the old and that's what was making the noise? Or maybe it needed time to settle? Now, I'm not certified in this area but I noticed that the new set up included wires that were zip-tied to the top grate of the unit. Every time the unit runs, the zipties vibrate and make a very, very loud noise. I remedied the problem myself by placing 2 heavy bricks on top of the unit because I don't feel like waiting around and being charged a ridiculous service charge for someone to come fix it. Again, not completely satisfied or impressed with this company. read more

I can't say enough great things about these guys. My system needed to be recharged 2 years ago and the guy came out and explained to me the problem, recharged the system at a very reasonable price and explained to me that if it happened again soon, I would need a new system. A year later the fan in my system starting making a crazy banging/thudding sound and I had to turn the blower off. I called to request an appointment since I had a good experience with them in the past and the technician walked me through the possible issue on the phone (my filter had collapsed because I put it in the wrong way) and got sucked into the blower. He suggested how I could get all the wire and filter out over the phone so they didn't have to send anyone out - at no charge. Who does that!! Excellent service. I would recommend these folks to anyone who needs them and will surely be calling them if I need additional AC service in the future! read more

This company is great. They were clean and wore booties at the door and then put tarps down on all our flooring. They replaced our heat pump and handler. The handler was in the attic. It was an all day job. It was done well at a fair price. Their warranty is also two years. Everyone else I called was only one year. read more

I absolutely recommend A.P. Mathews Heating & Air-conditioning for their expert service and integrity!! I received excellent service from Matt E who serviced my AC today!! My AC quit working over the weekend. The issue that Matt identified was a capacitor that had failed, resulting in the AC fan not functioning. He replaced the capacitor and checked out my AC and heating units, assuring me that my Trane system is in great shape, in spite of its age. My Trane units (heating & AC) were installed in about 2004. - Matt informed me that the model I have has top grade components and that the AC works with latest standard freon. He also assessed that my units are in good shape. - My bottom line... Matt did not try and sell me new units!! This is in contrast to my experience last summer when Blue Dot, whom I had been working with, came to expect my AC & heating units and identified major problems, told me that my AC was not compatible with the current standard freon, and very strongly pushed towards me purchasing an entire new system. I did not trust the Blue Dot technician and wisely decided to not be influenced by his sales pressure. I feel so blessed to have decided to work with A.T. Mathews, and signed up for a yearly maintenance contract with them today! read more

In my opinion, this is a good company.  I think it is a great size because it is small enough to be personal, but large enough to do bigger jobs quickly.  They were able to bring a big enough crew to my house to have my AC installed in less than a day when another company said that it might even take two days.  It is small enough that it seems like the owner is able to chat on the phone about any questions and come out to fix a hard problem.  Paul is not affraid to get his hands dirty or take after hour calls.  I recently called Paul about an unrelated heater question that he was willing to help me over the phone on a Sunday morning.  I really appreciated all his time. read more

What is your worst fear when it comes to living in the DC Metro area during the Summer months of July and August? Ask a dozen people this question and I'll bet many responses revolve around air conditioning and staying cool. It's one of my favorite luxuries that I take for granted until it's not available. I often think about how our ancestors did it Summer after Summer with only a shade tree, how did they keep cool enough to make it day to day during the dog days of ... So it was with panic when I heard the vibrations and squealing of the blower motor in our home's air conditioning system, contemplating how we would make it several days without air conditioning if there wasn't cool air blowing from the vents in my home. I did a quick Yelp search and .... and .... nothing. No one had reviewed any heating and air conditioning contractors in/around my hometown of Crofton. So I did the next best thing. I checked Angieslist.com and paid for one months subscription to search for a contractor. Why did I do this you ask? Well, when was the last time you found a friendly, competent, ethical, on-time contractor to work on your house? I've not found one and neither had any of my neighbors. I've had too many clunky experiences with contractors to want to take a risk with a situation as important as this one. So the top rated AC contractor in the Crofton area on Angieslist was AP Mathews. I called them on a Friday morning, they could not come that day, but had an opening on Saturday. We waited at home Saturday for the tech. to arrive between 10 to noon. He arrived at 10:30 and was completed by Noon. The blower motor was going bad (duh, it was vibrating the vents it was so loud) so it was lucky that we heard it failing before it failed, they don't always do that, otherwise we would have been without AC for a day or so until they could get out to help us. Paul was nice and professional and didn't mind answering all the questions from my 4 year old; what are you doing, why are you doing it, when will you be done, do you have any pets, are are all those tools in your truck? and on and on. We eventually had to send her outside to play. $340, more than half of which was for the new blower motor, the rest was his installation labor. I would definitely recommend them. I plan to contract with them again whenever we need gas, heating or A/C repairs or system changes in the coming years. When it comes to cool air in July in DC ... a few hundred bucks seems like bubble gum money compared to not having A/C. read more

Brief background: We used to use Blue Dot. They caused more damage to our furnace than they fixed, charged an arm and a leg to come out and fix things when the heat went out, and usually failed to fix it long-term despite that. So,after searching Angie's List we decided to switch to AP Mathews. They fixed the damage that occurred throughout BD's supposed maintenance of our furnace. They did our maintenance this year. Shortly after we started using the furnace this year, it started going out sporadically. AP Mathews' folks were wonderful about coming out same-day when the furnace went out. It took them a couple of visits because the part that was going only acted up sporadically, but they found it and replaced it. Not only did they not charge us really high fees for every visit the way BD did---since they had done the maintenance and were concerned that we were having trouble afterward, they only charged us for the replacement part. They were extremely responsive the whole way through, they never once gave us the impression they felt in any way put out by having to come out repeatedly (again, contrasted with BD), they worked hard to fix our problem, and our furnace has worked perfectly since that last visit. They were also very pleasant to deal with. We couldn't be happier. read more

Yep, nothing is more scary than being in an area where you don't know solid utility companies and you need a major upgrade to your home appliances. I Yelp'd AP Matthews this summer when I needed a new hvac system in my town home. They were the cheapest of three quotes I received on the replacement of an air conditioner and an air handler. Even better, they did a high efficiency unit for cheaper than the quote of a lower end model offered by others. Work started, they were clean, efficient, friendly, and responsive. Of course things do go wrong when they spend a week in your house, a couple calibration trips, flexible scheduling and workers that didn't seem to mind my dog put these guys in my call back contacts. In fact, I have called then back, for a hot water heater replacement. The owner, Paul is a stand-up guy from what I can tell. Very willing to make things right, even was nice enough to give a solid crash course on the system multiple times. Having been in The military for several years you know it is easy to stumble upon some bad service providers, ap Matthews is outstanding and we appreciate the comfort the new system provides. BEWARE, They are not deserving of 1 star! Hated Paul's demeanor when he came to my home. I had another technician working on the unit. When Paul arrived, he called and I notified him someone else was on site diagnosing the problem. I mentioned that he was welcome to come in to take a look at the unit to offer recommendations on a replacement. He was totally disrespectful and very unprofessional!! Paul took pictures of the units inside and outside. Refused to put shoe covers on when re-entering my home and walked straight through without regard to my request. Did not make eye contact when he conversed with me. Talked while walking away with his back towards me. No recommendations were provided. I've yet to hear from him to this day!! After a few difficult calls to other Mechanical/HVAC contractors, we finally got through to Gerry at AP Mathews HVAC to help us out! Being in the Property Management industry, I was hoping to make an easy call for a condenser fan replacement, however all others seemed reluctant to help because it meant dealing with a residential property. I called on 8/1/16 and Gerry coordinated for repairs the very same day! We have 2 pets and endured a long, hot weekend without AC, so that was such a relief. Then, Dave arrived and saved the day! After a few days of no AC it took awhile for things to resume back to normal, but he was so helpful. Quite the professional and so knowledgeable about our repair needs. Found Matt online with a Google search and read all the positive reviews. We are in the process of buying a "new to us" home which had original HVAC units when the home was built back in 2005/2006. We had Matt come out to do an independent inspection of the HVAC units to supplement the normal inspection of a home purchase. Being that the units were original and had 13/14 years on their life's clock, Matt had an opportunity to "upsale" the HVAC system with scare tactics and recommend new replacements especially when we haven't even bought the home yet. He took a honest approach and gave a true picture of the aging systems which did not include a whole new system be installed. He gave us an idea of what to expect out of the system after we bought the home and knows the value of a long relationship with a home owner. This was refreshing since my past experience with "Big Box" local HVAC companies which tell you that you need unnecessary repairs, Matt treated our home as his own. Knowing that he would keep the systems running without the "need to replace" language. I intend to have Matt has my "I have a guy" with my HVAC today and well into tomorrow... read more

I really hate to write bad reviews, but I feel that the company should know how disappointed I am. I picked them because of the Yelp reviews, so I figured it was fitting that there should be some balance to all the great reviews. Our smart thermostat went dead on a Sunday. I told them that there was some water in our crawlspace (where the thermostat interface unit was.. and likely the culprit.. there had been heavy storms recently). They said they didn't want to send someone out on a Sunday to muck through water. Fair enough. I said I'd see about getting it drained as much as I could. Did that Sunday and Monday. Went out of town for a few days, but sent an email with info on the crawlspace, the interface unit (including a link to the PDF manual with the wiring diagram), etc. Said we'd be back on Thursday and it would be great if someone could come out Thursday or Friday. Got back Thursday, contacted them about someone coming out Friday. Told them there was some new water in the crawlspace (more storms) and I'd drain it some more. Talked to them again on Friday morning, let them know it was still damp, but no significant standing water. A tiny bit near the entrance, but not bad once inside. Dave, probably the one mentioned in other glowing reviews, showed up right on time (appoint between 1pm and 3pm), so that was nice. Took a look at things and proclaimed the crawlspace "wet" and that he didn't want to go down there. After conferring with his boss, they agreed that he shouldn't go down there. I couldn't have given more advance notice on it being wet, but I did all I could to get as much water out as possible. The tech who (Ken from Bay Heating and Cooling!) ultimately fixed our problem, had no issues with the damp. He put a paper dropcloth down and it barely had any wet showing through. Still, I tipped him well for his troubles. Now, all of that would have been only annoying if A.P. Mathews had followed up and helped us but we were told that they'd get back to us later that day with a new plan. Nothing for an hour or so... so I called in. Told again that they would confer and get back to us. A few hours later and it's past 6pm and now into after hours/weekend hours/holiday hours so we ended up paying extra to Bay Heating (worth it, but would have been nice to have gotten a response from A.P. Heating before rates got more expensive. That was all on Friday. It's now Sunday and I still haven't gotten a call back. I appreciate that Dave showed up on time and was courteous and sympathetic. And I understood his reasons for not wanting to get wet. But given that they had almost a week's notice about the situation, I'm very unimpressed at their ability to prepare for things. I'm also not happy about being ghosted and basically left to hang with no response or solution to our problem. I also hate that I feel it necessary to write this review. But I'm pretty upset by the service. read more

I have called On A.P. Mathews twice in the past in regard to my central a/c. One call was was repair as a/c wasn't working in the heat of July and the second was an annual inspection & trouble shooting a loud return air vent. In both cases this family owned business responded promptly, courteously & competently. The service was completed successfully and at a reasonable cost. I was very impressed that the owner, made a point to personally drop by, to look at the problem with the loud blower, while the technicians was inspecting the system. The owner spent about 40 minutes assessing the problem and offer a simple solution that helped reduce the noise coming from the vent. He also offered a way the venting could be enhanced to improve filtration and reduce the noise further for about $600. I was pleased with the no cost remedy he offered and decided to wait & see before modifying the return vent. I was never charged for the owners time. Based on the above, I would highly recommend A.P. Matthews for service & repair of HAVC systems for the reasons mentioned. read more

3 days after the blizzard my gas furnace stops working. I called AP Mathews, since the company who installed my system in 2012 no longer do furnaces, and the lady who answered the phone was SO nice. She tried to help me trouble shoot my problem. When it became apparent that I couldn't fix it, she was able to send someone out to my home a couple hours later mind you, the roads are still bad!). Matt came out and fixed my problem quickly! He also informed me that it is probably still under warranty and suggested I get the part replaced since it will probably happen again (a stuck gas valve). I've had them come out before, every time I am amazed at their ability to fit me in, and they leave me feeling comfortable having them service my Heat pump again. I have had others, who I never called again after one encounter, A.P. Mathews is by far the best out there. After their last visit I decided I would replace my current Heat Pump, they worked with my price range, made sure I was comfortable with what they were to install (Giving me model numbers and links to the manufactures website), came on time, and installed my new system in a reasonable amount of time. A. P Matthews came to fix our air conditioner (heat pump). The showed us where it was leaking and put Freon in and it worked for about 3 weeks. We called them back and they explained that our unit was leaking outside as well as the air carrier. (They did not charge us when they came the second time. We believed them since we have lived in our home for 29 years. Paul (owner) came and looked at our entire system and gave us an estimate to replace it. We felt it was a good offer and we had them install a new unit. Jimmy and the other two men working with him installed the new system. They worked all day replacing the heat pump and the entire unit in our attic...even our attic fan. We cannot say enough good things about how professional they were. It was extremely hot but they knew what they were doing and worked efficiently and were very careful about keeping all our carpets covered so nothing would get dirty. We have used other companies before but A.P. Matthews is by far the best!! We highly recommend them! read more

Cannot say enough good things about AP Mathews. 1) Paul the owner seems like a really nice and reasonable guy 2) Gerry (sp.) the organizer is great and actually calls you back. Very sweet and personable woman 3) Matt the technician who worked on my HVAC was knowledgeable, thorough, and honest I had family over for Thanksgiving and noticed that the HVAC was running for a while and never seemed to properly heat the house, so I figured it was low on refrigerant. I called around and decided to go with AP Mathews based on the Yelp reviews and I am so glad I did. Calling and making the appointment with Gerry was a breeze and she was super flexible. Matt the tech arrived and from the start I felt like he was a trustworthy guy. He checked out the inside unit and he discovered that the heat coil was on all of the time drawing 10 Amps--even if the whole system was off! Yikes! Pain in the wallet in terms of electricity... He and Paul did a great job figuring out that the coil pack fried itself as was stuck in the on position drawing all those Amps--coils were a tangled up mess. They installed a new coil pack and Matt even noticed that the last installer (warranty work) who wired the thermostat missed a wire which enabled my emergency heat. (Uggghh... Another reason why it is so hard to find a good company like AP Mathews) With problem number 1 down, Matt checked the refrigerant--it was almost empty! There is a leak somewhere. They did a high pressure leak test using nitrogen and found the leak. Matt fixed the leak and recharged the system with refrigerant and I am back in business with nice hot air! The hvac does not seem to work as hard and the house is much more comfortable. Will save me on the electric bill I hope. Could not be happier with Matt or AP Mathews. :) If you want honest work done--give them a call, you won't be sorry. read more
