Barstow saved the day for us in a huge way. We had a broken heater, and the part we needed was apparently not being made any more. We had tried another HVAC company who tried 4 times to order the part, but kept getting an after-market replacement that didn't fix. That company was great, but said we needed to replace the whole unit ($10K). Barstow ordered the part after I told them the story, and even though they were very specific, they also received the after-market part. However, Greg from Barstow came to our house, took the old part out, brought it to the supply warehouse himself, and rooted around until he found the right piece (mislabeled, of course). We had a $20,000 system installed in March. From the very beginning we were getting no air flow in the upstairs. We called for service 4 times and they came out with no solution each time. The last time the technician suggested getting our ducts checked. We had another company come out and in less than 5 minutes they found the problem. The main line from the furnace/compressor was not hooked up in the attic. It took them another 5 minutes to fix this. We blew cold air all summer into basically dead space. Now the upstairs is comfortable as expected. I can't believe that the Barstow team did not find such an obvious problem. read more

Barstow and Sons was great until they SOLD LAST SUMMER (2025)- they are now serviced by F.H. Furr, owned by Apex Service Partners. They provide mediocre service at best. Extremely disappointing as the old Barstow never communicated this to me when I bought a new system with a two-year service package in 2025. Now I'm stuck with F.H. Furr - they don't even provide a new filter with their maintenance service! I find the Barstow website deceptive as it describes Barstow the way it used to be. I can no longer recommend them. Heat pump crashed after 15 years of good service. Due to pandemic supply shortage and heavy workload the earliest other companies could install a replacement system was 3 to 4 weeks. Given that the weather had just turned warm and was promising to become hot that was not a prospect we welcomed. Barstow understood the situation and found a system at one of the supply houses they use. They put together a crew that was willing to work on Saturday and installed a new heat pump and air handler less than 24 hours after we called them. Their work was prompt, professional, and fairly priced. They cleaned up after themselves and answered all of the questions that we had about the new system. I would highly recommend Barstow to anyone in the Annapolis area! read more

TL;DR: Barstow and Sons' owner is incredibly professional and takes great pride in his company's work. Happy to rate 5/5. After renting for a few years, I contacted the apartment owner about some HVAC issues I had noticed. Turns out the roof unit needed to be replaced, and the owner contracted with Barstow and Sons. On the promised morning the team showed up early, immediately craned on the new unit and removed the old. I understand they even took care of street permits for the crane. Apartment owner was present in the unit while I was at work, but I received a text that by the afternoon everything was in place and heat was operational (and it was!). Fast forward a few months and, Maryland weather being what it is, we went from snowing on Saturday to 85 degrees on Wednesday. I switched the thermostat to AC and...nothing. No cooling air - not even neutral air. Puzzled, I switched it back to heat and...still nothing. Told the apartment owner, who gave me permission to contact Barstow and Sons directly to schedule an inspection. They set me up for a Saturday appointment. Saturday morning the tech arrived (again, right on time). He found a blown transformer, troubleshot, but blew a second transformer (and the only spare he had in his van). Tech said that because the warehouse is closed on the weekend, they'll have to come out again. Not ideal, but after being on ships for years, I also understand any install can have hiccups. Tech left after about an hour and I was preparing to run some errands when I received a phonecall from the owner of Barstow and Sons. He said he received his tech's report, but as the owner lived nearby and they had recently done a fresh install, he was willing to come out to make sure the unit was fixed that day. Owner arrived in the promised half-hour, troubleshot from scratch (and identified a separate issue), replaced the transformer, and then also inspected the roof unit. My A/C has been working for weeks. I probably would have rated Barstow and Sons 5/5 after the initial install, 4/5 after the first tech, and 6/5 after the owner batted clean up. I would love to give them a 5 simply because Jay was very friendly and knowledgeable and resolved my issue. HOWEVER, this was after Jeremy was my initial tech and caused more issues to my unit. Jeremy was rude, ignored my concerns and said my thermostat was the cause of the issue. He did not have a thermostat handy so said he will come back another day. He also refused to look at the heating until in my attic and said all he had to do was check out the outside. If anyone ever gets Jeremy please ask for another tech. Excellent service by Taylor Windmiller! Our a/c us wasn't working. We just bought our first home and during the inspections had the unit check by another company and we were told it was " all clean and in great condition". After Taylor checked out our unit he found out that our outer and inner coil was caked with about a half an inch of dirt. He even took time to show us and he took a video of the inside coil for us. These guys really helped me out in a time of despair when less than 24 hours after closing as a first time home buyer, my AC (condensation) was leaking into the kitchen. They came out and fixed various parts of piping that had been patched in a very stupid way by previous owners, at first weren't sure of a solution to issues architecturally with the way the condensation line was set up - but then came out again and were able to figure out a solution. It really put me at ease as a new home owner when nobody else in the process (inspector, realtor, etc.) was helping me - particularly when the issue wasn't found yet was visible, and not disclosed. Very nice, friendly people / unlike another local vendor that was an HMS contractor that was always in the worst mood and didn't want to provide and suggestions for solution. I solicited nearly twenty bids to replace my two HVAC units and Barstow submitted a very complete and competitive offer. Unfortunately, I chose the lowest bidder and got what I paid for - sloppy work, two gas leaks, and a new A/C that stopped working after two weeks. Multiple repair reps from BGE Home claimed "the install was one of the worst hack jobs they had ever seen." I quickly called Barstow's owner Chuck to see if he could get the work up to code. Chuck said "no problem" and had a crew on it in a matter of days. The crew was timely, polite, professional, clean, and very knowledgeable. Thanks Ben, Steve and Logan!! I'm glad to see other folks' reviews that were happy with their service, because I certainly am not. I've had three problems this summer with my AC unit and as far as I can tell, the cause of the follow-up repairs is the lack of attention to detail during previous visits. Repair 1: Motor on external unit is burnt out; replaced with new motor. Repair 2: Tech that installed new motor on first repair didn't tighten down the grounding wire; 3 days without AC during heat-wave because of a loose wire. Repair 3: The fan on the external unit has COMPLETELY FALLEN OFF of the motor's drive shaft. I'm usually not one to review companies poorly if I'm not satisfied, but as you can imagine, I'm quite upset with this level of repair service. If they call me back today and come fix it, I'll update my review. read more

Barstow & Sons installed a new heating and A/C system for us on 5/9/20 after or ancient HVAC died two days before. I experienced nothing but excellent service from the office manager to the technician to the installation crew. Due to the seasonally cold temperatures, Chuck Easton, the company president, rounded up a crew to install the new system on a SATURDAY, which is not a normal installation day. The owner personally came out on Friday to ensure he would have all materials for a Saturday installation since most suppliers would be closed on Saturdays. The owner personally led the installation team. I was totally satisfied with my experience with Barstow & Sons and would readily use them again and recommend them to others. read more

Does not stand behind their work. American Home Shield sent them, so we had to use them but they will not be allowed in my home again. My heat broke in January and AHS sent Barstow to fix it. AC was working and heat was not. Barstow replaced heater control board and I asked if AC was still working. I was told because it was below 50 degrees it could not be tested. Friday I turned on my AC for the first time and the compressor came on but the blower didn't come on. The same blower that was working last summer, the same blower that's works ok for the heat, and the same blower I asked about when they fixed the heat. AHS wants to charge me again because its been more than 60 days. I called Barstow to see if they would stand behind their work and they gave me nothing but excuses. (Your an AHS customer and we cant come out unless they dispatch us) I told them if they would come out and verify it wasn't their issue, I would pay them directly. This time the excuse was I would "get better pricing from AHS". Which excuse do you want to use? Pick one and stay with it! She then then told me that I should open a ticked with AHS and they would come out at that time. I told her that was already done but a different company was being dispatched. Hmmmm, has AHS had other unhappy Barstow customers and that's why their not using them again?? AVOID at all costs. read more

Fantastic customer service and communication. Recently I had to have my AC looked at ... Obviously not something anyone ever wants to have done, and in the current heat wave waiting is not what you want to do (currently it is in the 95-100's). I called Barstow and late the same afternoon Mike and Craig (I think that was their names) showed up with the right parts to fix my issue on their truck and a smile on their faces while they worked. They were able to get me up and running in about 30 minutes, working like a pit crew from a car racing team. They seemed great...at first...on the phone. My home warranty company sent them out. They came out and did a patch job on the ground wires from my AC instead of replacing them. I understood that. They charged me to clean my AC coils which I understood since my warranty company didn't cover that. They said that would solve my problem. They left without checking to see that my AC was actually blowing out cold air. I called them back to tell them my AC was NOT fixed but was told that the person I needed to speak to was on the other line and would need to call me back. Hours later I call again and that person has now "stepped out of the office". They never call me back. I call my home warranty company and tell them what is going on and they call Barstow and get the same run around. Talk about crappy customer service! At least speak to the customer when they tell you that the job wasn't done. read more

When I needed a repair on my A/C, these folks saved me literally thousands over other estimates, determining the problem very quickly. A few years later, my heater went out, so I called Barstow and Sons again. They looked me up in the system and found that Gregory Jones had been the technician to help me previously, and asked if I'd like him to return. He came over, diagnosed the problem in short order, explaining it very clearly and concisely. The service was surprisingly affordable, and he even replaced my air filter just for good measure. Our furnace quit working Saturday night and we got Barstow and Sons to come out on Tuesday morning. I looked up the reviews here on Yelp and was encouraged that they were a good company. Our tech was Jeremy and though I had read a bad review about him, and was concerned, he turned out to be great! He was on time, and knew what the problem was right away. He said that he had to go get the part and would be back in 30 minutes. I was doubtful about it, but I was WRONG. Not only did he come right back, but it was under 30 minutes. He replaced it and got everything working. We could not be happier with his service. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who needs service! read more

My issue turned out to be minor ( clogged drain causing water to overflow) but the technician, who is also the business owner offered to do a checkup on the system while he was there to see make the service call worth it for me.
