We came here to celebrate my boyfriend's parents' 60th birthdays and really enjoyed the food, service, and ambiance! It is a really beautiful view when you come here during sunset. And the outdoor dining is nice and covered. Definitely bring a light jacket, but they also have outdoor heaters that they'll turn on for you. Their food is tasty. We all got first courses and second courses and some of us had desserts - everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal! I really liked both the melon and burrata appetizer I had as well as my rack of lamb entree. The melon was nice and sweet with the burrata. I wish it could've had a little more burrata though, but the truth is I always wish I can have a little more burrata! The lamb was cooked perfectly and I loved that it tasted meaty. My fiance and I came here for my birthday dinner, we had booked one of the rooms at the hotel for the weekend. We had heard amazing things about this restaurant, so we wanted to give it a try, versus driving out from the hotel into town... First, we were sat at a very awkward table with only a booth and no chairs across. Our booth was in the corner facing the servers stations, and there was a very bright light above it making us feel like we had a spotlight. The waitress was not very warm and seemed quite rushed even though there were only two other tables inside with a full wait staff. Normally for a restaurant of this caliber and price, you would expect top service. Secondly, our order was rang up incorrectly, they brought us out the wrong appetizer. We ordered burratta and they brought duck pate. Usually if food is brought to your table by mistake, they offer it to the guests, but the waitress came and took it back to the kitchen (maybe for the staff to eat it?). Which is fine, we didn't order it, but it was a bit surprising. Even more surprising, she charged us for it on our bill, we had to bring it to her attention and she then took it off without apologies. My fiancé's water was empty for the majority of the dinner. In the beginning of the dinner, the waitress said happy birthday. At the end, she brought us a dessert menu and asked if we would like anything. We went ahead and ordered the cake, because it did not seem like the restaurant was going to do anything. Then after we order and receive the cake, the waitress brings out the free birthday dessert. We would not have ordered the cake if we knew, it seemed like a way to just rack up our bill. from bringing the wrong appetizers then taking it, mistakenly charging us for it, empty water glasses, not checking on us, the awkward table in an almost empty restaurant, and having us order a dessert before providing the complimentary one, it was just not what we expected. My martini was horrible, and unfortunately, the duck that was served to me was so overdone that it was grey in color and hard to cut thru. I think my overall experience took two hours just because of how long it took for them to come to my table for the next course to be delivered. I also waited 20 minutes to get my check. Unbelievable. Our server is really knowledgeable about the whole menu (both wine and food), but I felt like he oversold us...originally I was gonna get the cheese course as my main course as I wasn't really hungry, but he said everything was portioned so we could have a 3-course meal and still leave the restaurant comfortably, so I ended up ordering lamb chops and split the cheese course with my hubby. Everything was delicious but I had so much food that I def didn't leave comfortably, and we ended up with a bigger check. We came for our anniversary to watch the sunset and i must say everything was amazing from the service, everyone was nice, sweet and soft spoken, the area was very pleasant with nice low lit lights, heaters on the patio and great seating all around. The food was superb, letting us split the first course into 2 sets of portion for me and my partner. The kanpachi was tender and meaty with a nice warm broth to keep it flavorful and the lamb rack was tender and paired well the ju and eggplant. Additionally the chef gave us a complimentary sun chips on the house was to our surprise very very good and light. We only came here for breakfast. Not inexpensive, but it was some of the most unique experiential breakfasts, in a beautiful dining room, overlooking the Torrey Pines Lodge's pool and golf course. Along with five star service, you're paying for all of the above. The Ancient Grain Bowl, poached eggs on ancient grains, with broccolini and fresh shiitake mushrooms was beyond heavenly. The bowl with poached eggs, spinach, and pine nuts amongst other things was exquisite. The bacon, coffee, etc also were divine. The only fail were the croissants. Hommage Bakehouse, just down the hill, blows their pastry supplier out of the water. Service was every superlative that you can come up with. Beautiful places are nice. I ordered the chicken pate, which was mediocre, it is better from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's! My salad was average. Our children ordered fish, which didn't come until we were all finished eating whatever we had in front of us! I just cannot believe the the negative experience we had at what used to be one of the best restaurants in San Diego! I must admit I was initially not so enthusiastic about hotel dining but you won't be disappointed at this fine dining establishment in the Lodge at Torrey Pines. Service and food are on point and they are doing some contemporary twists on the food despite the traditional but charming digs. I started with a salad since my initial choice of appetizer was unavailable. The scallops followed. Others at the table had steak, duck, a vegetarian root party entree. Desserts included a cheese course, a wine poached pear and a donut bread pudding. Not a single miss! I will note that one of the highlights is the bread service. Do not pass up trying the thyme biscuit or event the sour dough or multigrain. They are simply delicious. Service was good if not super sophisticated. Perhaps it's still a reflection of the staffing challenges with Covid. But all in all this is a really wonderful dining experience. Took my mom her for her birthday. It's been a few years since I've last been. Service was excellent. Couldn't ask for anything more. They were on point with checking up on us and refilling glasses. For starters, we had the apple salad. Fresh greens and texture with the addition of the apples and pecans. For mains my mom has the crispy skin sable fish and I the ribeye. I requested my ribeye to be cooked medium rare, and for my liking it was a too rare. Overall fine as it was only the middle pieces I didn't eat. It's topped with bone marrow butter and served with root veggies boulangere, which I really liked. The sable fish looked really good and my mom enjoyed it. For desserts we got the pear galette and sticky toffee pudding. The sticky toffee pudding came with persimmon gelato and a few slices of persimmon. It was a good flavor addition to the dessert. There were a few compliments of the house. Some cooked greens, didn't catch the type but similar to spinach. We enjoyed a memorable dinner at A.R. Valentien last night. The sunset was phenomenal from the outdoor terrace. The building itself boasts gorgeous wood architecture and the decor is incredibly classy. I have only two concerns over the entire 3 hours that we were there which earns them five stars in my book. 1. We arrived at 7:15 for a 7:15 reservation and were not seated until about 7:28. 2. I ordered the Dolce Late Harvest by Far Niente for dessert. The menu lists it as 2013 vintage for $36 but the bottle that was poured read 2016. The receipt was $36 dollars for the glass even though 2013 and 2016 Dolce are certainly different price points. Slightly concerning. We began with champagne while we waited for our table to be ready and were helped by Hannah who was wonderful. Once seated we were treated to a chef's gift, gazpacho with lobster and cilantro in a small glass. Bread service came around with 3 different types to choose from. I highly recommend the corn bread. Our first dish was the artisanal cheese plate which comes with all four cheeses listed on the menu. All the cheeses were fantastic and there was just enough accoutrements. We then shared the Eggplant Tart which was surprisingly tasty. The accompanying salad seemed out of place as the bitterness of the spinach distracted from the rest of the dish. For mains we had the Lamb, Duck and roasted beets. The lamb was cooked medium rare with a nice crust and was great overall. The rest of the plate consisting of greens and a lentil base was delicious too. My fiancés duck confit was exactly what you are looking for when you order it. Crispy on the outside and so flavorful and tender on the inside. The roasted beets were a hit with us. We received a 2nd chefs gift of delicious squash with garlic and shallots. We enjoyed En Route pinot noir throughout the meal and it paired beautifully with everything. While we were finishing up our mains Paul, the advanced sommelier, came over and checked in with us. He was great to talk with and ended up giving us each a pretty hefty pour of some delicious cab on the house. Thanks Paul! For dessert we enjoyed what we could of their blackberry croulant (I think) for we were very full. They sent out a 3rd chefs gift which was 2 donut balls and 2 marshmallow cubes. We enjoyed the 20 yr tawny and dolce late harvest, both so good. Then espresso to cap off. Our waiter Connor did an excellent job along with the support staff who crumbed our table several times and frequently topped our wine and water glasses. I stopped by A.R. inside the beautiful Lodge at Torrey Pines. The restaurant is elegant, but cozy with a sophisticated flair. Their locally-inspired menu is constantly changing, with a focus on California fish and game. I began with a citrus salad and it was alright. It came with a wedge of mild cheese, lettuce, cabbage, nuts and oranges. There wasn't quite enough of the mild dressing so it felt like only eating leafy vegetables and not much else. I had the crab-crusted swordfish as my main course. My server explained to another table that this was one of A. R.'s signature dishes. The crab really didn't make much of an appearance. If there was any, it was ground too much into the breadcrumbs so as to be unnoticed. The fish came with a basic white butter sauce, and some undercooked fingerling potatoes. The dish also came with slices of lemon that were sliced horizontally so you couldn't really squeeze them. It felt a bit... clumsy. On the plus side, the dish came with two large swordfish filets so two people could split it comfortably. I wasn't really feeling too hungry and just had an espresso and some free small treats to finish my meal. While I didn't find the food special, I was blown away by the excellent service. My server Connor was friendly and passionate, always coming by to offer bread and water with a smile. The other servers were also very friendly and they offered a free amuse bouche. I want to love this restaurant, but there are just too many misses. The staff is attentive, service is provided by a team of wait staff. Drinks are brought to the table quickly, they have an excellent selection of wine (En Route) and cocktails (Old fashioned). Our server was friendly and verbose but rushed and constantly upselling additional sides, multiple entrees. Every dish was extremely rich and heavy. We were honestly full after sharing just the appetizer. I asked for the pasta without the crab and was served pasta with crab. When I mentioned it to Ted he just smiled and hurried along. We also asked they not split the entree (onto two plates) and it came on two plates. The dishes all had robust flavors but almost overpowering, and both my partner and I woke up at 3am with terrible stomach aches wishing we had a more fresh meal. The view is wonderful, but the booths face the window tables so we had to stare at another couple eating the whole time, which was awkward. With the reviews and ratings online, my family and I opted to drive the 30min from downtown to dine at AR Valentien. The views are picturesque along the way, and the service was very friendly. A mosquito tried to dine with us inside but we quickly squashed that idea. Our server Maria and her colleagues were attentive, informative, and patient as we decided what to order. The bread they brought out was warm, initially, but it tasted stale. The spring Angel hair pasta was light and tasty, but the veal cheeks were tender and flavorful. The cheese plate was a disappointment, as the fruit was too sweet and the starch they served was best described as a burnt piece of something that dreamed of being a cracker. The ribeye was tasty and cooked just right, and the scallops were flavorful, except the dashi broth was hard to eat the scallops with. It feels odd to use a knife and fork to cut a scallop swimming in dashi (one could argue that means it's a touch overdone). And for dessert, we ordered the blueberry orange crème brulee and were hugely disappointed. It should be called a custard tart with canned oranges and blueberries (because that's what it tastes like). The pastry chef sent some cinnamon sugar donuts and toffee popcorn, but they were utterly forgettable at that point. Tip: Park in the garage. Although there are gates, there's no ticket or cost. Or you can valet! My take away: the view is beautiful. Get the veal cheeks! Skip the cmere brûlée. Ask for a spoon with the scallops, and unless you're just in love with cheesy sweetness, skip the cheese plate. read more

We used to love to come for lunch in the wintertime pre-Covid. As of a couple months ago, AR is open again for lunch so we had to go! The chefs have turned over (but the head chef still runs the show), and the menu is new - but the best part is a) they kept the really popular dishes and b) they introduced new ones that are just as great. And as the table next to us found out to their surprise - there is a secret-ish menu, you can get anything from the Torrey Pines Grill... including the Drugstore Burger. The gentleman that got it raved about it to his wife. :) We had the charcuterie, the cauliflower, I had the lamb meatballs. Everyone loved their first course. Second was Pan Roasted Halibut. Our waiter recommended it and I have to say (as a fish liker but maybe not lover) it has to be one of the best things on this menu. One other had the smoked trout from the apps section and loved it. Croissant Bread Pudding and Chocolate Caramel tart were really good desserts. I threw my fork on the table after trying the Croissant and family knows that means OMG. We definitely all noticed and agreed that the menu has been kicked up a notch. Service is excellent - I always forget to mention it with them because it is so transparent. Nice patio with heat lamps overlooking the pool better than the interior which is a bit wooden and dated. Italian chocolate cake is good but I would not order it again. Fries good, they offer sweet potato fries too. The Grill has a $20 shrimp cocktail I would like to try. Parking is free in the Lodge garage which is a bit tight and dimly lit. Seating comfortable. TL;DR: Came here for Mother's Day dinner. Hard no. Bad food. Kitchen oversalted everything. Ignored by staff. Will never return. The long version. We arrived 15 minutes before our reserved time. The girl at the podium said to have a seat and they'll call us in 15 minutes. 25 minutes later, we're still waiting. DH asks if our table is ready. Response? "Sorry, please come this way." Why did she say "sorry" if there was no reason to be sorry about? Seems someone was too busy talking (or maybe doing nothing) and lost track of time. This was just the beginning of our dinner and we hadn't even been seated yet. Our server never introduced himself to us, I had to look at his name tag to see what his name was. He only told us that he was one of the bartenders and that we were lucky to have him so he could make our drinks to our exact specifications. No thanks, we don't drink alcohol. Food ordered, bread arrived. Complimentary amuse bouche. Wow, so nice, right? So far, so good. First course was the angel hair pasta with Dungeness crab. Crab was great. Pasta was great. Sauce was nothing but salt and cream. When the server came by to ask how our food was, I said the sauce was VERY salty. Rather than offering to remake it to my liking, he just says, "hmm, salty? I'll tell the kitchen." I asked him to please tell them to go easy on the salt for my second course. I see him leave behind the swinging door. I eat my pasta because it was so expensive and I'm not about to waste food or money. But it sure would've been nice to put something in my mouth that actually tasted pleasant! Second course arrives. Looks delicious. Cooked well. Again, nothing but salt in the sauce. Whoever was in charge of the sauce was too heavy handed with the salt. By now, my entire mouth tasted of nothing but salt. My tongue felt like it was going to start shriveling soon. I could distinguish the texture was well cooked. I kept waiting for the server to come ask how the food was so I could tell him about it but he didn't come. During my waiting period, the manager walks right past our table and went to another table of 10+ people and wished them a happy Mother's Day, how was the food, etc., the regular chit chat the restaurant manager does. I thought, surely, we'll get our turn next and I can voice this to him so he can do something about it! I really don't want to keep eating salty food! Nope. He just kept moving on. I really felt a racial bias. That table was all white/Caucasian and we were not. It's Mother's Day. I mean, do you think we were eating there just for the heck of it? I would've liked to have someone come wish me a happy Mother's Day! I also would've liked to have had the chance to let them fix the salty food situation. And because it looked like we were insignificant guests at this fine dining establishment, I continued eating my salty food and never drank so much water at a meal EVER. Our glasses were empty and when the server eventually came around, the first thing I asked for was water. He nearly jumped because he hadn't realized our glasses needed refills. Wow, thanks for paying attention to your table, Mr. Server.... So again, I told him the food is too salty. I fully expected him to offer to correct it. But no. Just "oh, so sorry, I'll let the kitchen know." If he was telling the kitchen, they didn't make any adjustments. He says he's just the messenger and that he was afraid he'd get yelled at and acted scared of providing this feedback to the kitchen. Well, it turns out that he was completely insincere about telling the kitchen! I was so unhappy that when dessert course started, I didn't want to order anything. The pastry chefs were offering complimentary desserts. When I asked if he'd said anything and asked if he'd gotten in trouble with the kitchen, he admitted to NOT TELLING THEM ABOUT THE SALT!!!!!!! I ate all that salt and didn't get the chance to tell someone who could've done something about it, as if that "someone" would've even come to check on us. Wow. What a disappointment! This place is far beyond overrated. I leave this review in the hopes that someone else reading this doesn't fall victim to the same outcome as I did. The corn with the scallops and the ribeye steak were too salty. The two amouse bouche offerings of shrimp on a tortilla chip and artichoke hearts were not enjoyable. Great food, amazing service, and a lovely ambience This place has it all and I would 100% come back. I came with a party of 5 for a friend's birthday and was seated immediately, as we had a reservation. The staff was super friendly and provided very good service. The food was delicious and they even gave us complimentary dishes, as well as complimentary dessert for my friend's birthday. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it for a nice meal on special occasions. read more
