The sear on the fillet was amazing. Wanted to add that the server Cesar was phenomenal. Looking forward to returning for an excellent dinner. Live music and piano was an amazing addition, the vibes were top notch. I'm a tough critic, and I have not a single complaint. P.S. Try the Butter Cake, you won't regret it. Since we were satisfied during our visit last month, we decided to have my wife's birthday dinner here. Had a 5 p.m. reservation. We didn't get a hard time looking for parking. Ordered again the Shrimp scampi and Crab Cake. Still two of our favorites. 5/5 Also ordered: Calamari - golden brown, crispy crust, and tender meat with Fresno, Tartar, Spicy Aioli sauce. 4/5 Wood Grilled Half Chicken - Smokey flavor but other than that, nothing special. Our least favorite. 3/5 Lobster Arrabbiata - lot of sauce, al dente pasta, and tender lobster meat chunks. Some bites get spicy so be careful. 4/5 Fire Roasted Cheesecake - we don't normally order desserts after our meal but I'm glad we did; this is one of the best cheesecakes that we had! 5/5 Thanks for the free birthday Vanilla gelato, it was delicious. First off, service was excellent 5/5. We were sat in the patio where we could enjoy the live music. However, when the regular music was playing, it was so loud you could not hold a conversation. Now to the main event, the food. $59 for a Seabass filet without any sides. Was it delicious? Yes 10/10. Was it highway robbery? Also yes. Empanadas were child sized. We visited this place for the first time using our AMEX quarterly benefit. I love trying out new places and this one did not disappoint! It's interesting because it says Italian Steakhouse but we were recommended other plates in the menu besides the steak (although I am sure its as good). Our server recommended the Branzino and Lamb Chops for entree; we got a salad and broccolini to share and the shrimp and short rib empanadas as an appetizer. The food was amazing! My husband does not even like fish but he said the Branzino just melted in your mouth. We originally wanted to sit inside (we did have a reservation) but were actually seated outside. The only availability was next to the bar, and although on a normal day we would of accepted, it was just too loud for us and we wanted to share a conversation, plus the seats were not the most comfortable in that area. They did not have availability on the other side of the restaurant, so that was interesting. I will say that the server was amazing and he asked if we were celebrating something, we said our anniversary and he gave us free ice cream. The restaurant is at UTC so parking is (paid) and takes forever to find a spot. It's nice inside however the ambiance spotlights they have aren't pointed well, it shone directly in our face the whole time. Our server was very slow, we barely saw her and we had to ask multiple times for things such as dipping sauce on the side for the fries. We ordered partly based off her recommendations and when we ordered what she recommended we didn't like those items. The Hamachi crudo was delicious (tiny portion). The burrata was ok, don't get me wrong I love burrata but it didn't seem prepared, as in they just placed an $8 burrata on a plate with a slice of toast and sold it for $20+. Onto the main course...not quite sure how you ruin steak but it happened. We ordered the filet medium rare and the ribeye medium. They both came out extremely rare. She sent them back to cook a little longer as the rest of our party ate. About 10 minutes later the food came out again still rare. The ribeye also seemed extremely tough and both steaks were not seasoned well if at all. The roasted beet salad didn't actually have roasted beets and barely had any goat cheese. The lobster roll was ok. Highlight of the meal was the lobster gnocchi and I'd gladly order that again. All in all, multiple hundreds dollars later and we were extremely dissatisfied and still hungry....dont recommend. read more

Amalfi Llama continues to be one of those restaurants that's simply fun to visit. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and seated immediately. Our server was genuinely happy--almost bubbly--and her enthusiasm elevated the entire evening. Great service has a way of setting the tone, and she absolutely did. The house-made focaccia was fantastic. Warm, crusty on the outside, soft in the middle, and served fresh. We'd happily order that again. The short rib empanadas were outstanding--honestly the kind of appetizer you talk about afterward. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Two of us ordered the prime rib dip. Normally I wouldn't order a sandwich at a restaurant like this, but I have a weakness for a great prime rib dip, and this one absolutely delivered. It was loaded with real chunks of prime rib, perfectly cooked, and every bite was excellent. The salmon was also very good. The only feedback from the person who ordered it was that it could have used just a touch more seasoning to really make the flavors pop. The cacio e pepe with steak added as the protein was simply out of this world. If you're debating what to order, put this high on your list. As an added bonus, there was a singer performing in the lounge. He sounded so good throughout the restaurant that all four of us eventually wandered over just to see who was performing. The calamari had tartar and spicy aioli on the side, and it was decently crispy. We ordered some drinks, and the standouts were the lychee martini and purple orchid. For entrees: -Lobster arrabbiata which had lobster and spicy tomato on spaghetti: This was a good size, and the flavors were on point. -Positano pizza: This had soppressata, finocchiona, and hot honey. Came on a Saturday afternoon for lunch at the bar. The restaurant was pretty dead as was the bar. The bartender was very attentive and made an excellent tequila espresso martini. The food was delicious, if not just a tad pricey. We ordered the whole branzino to share and it was delicious, along with a crab cake. It was so well balanced. Overall we liked the food, bartender and decor, but I think if the music was more upbeat they would have more people at lunch. Let's start by saying am thankful they were open until 10pm July 4th! Also, the place had decent vibe even though there were only a few of us dining being it's the 4th and most people were celebrating still. This place is purported to be Italian and Brazillian. Wood fired grillers in the kitchen. Saw they had a ribeye at $78 for a 16 oz so it lured me. Am a bit finicky with steaks but hey, it's wood fired so I was in! Ordered smashed potato with that steak and also had a Ceasar for starters. The salad came and it was decent but it left me wanting a bit more regarding its taste, but I thought, ok. Ceasar. No biggie. Then the steak came. Wifey mentioned it looked flat like somebody ran over it. I enjoy thicker cut steaks and this looked like about 1/2 inch steak. Taste was no big deal. I think i would have done better to have gone to Norms or even better. Outback Steakhouse because that's where how I felt about the steak. And our bill wasn't that cheap! The mashed wasn't bad tho. I'm a big fan of Amalfi Llama and it continues to impress even for take out. We ordered the lobster roll ($37.99) and the Almafi burger (24.99) and the items were very thoughtfully packaged in a tamper proof bag. Surprisingly everything was still hot when we took out everything the eat at home. While value is not the strong suit of Amalfi Llama the taste and quality of food are the strong suits. I think the lobster roll is a new monthly guilty pleasure. It was so buttery and delicious. The burger - which I've gotten several times continues to impress with its quality and cohesion. The truffle fries were a great compliment to both dishes. It's conveniently located at a very popular an accessible part of UTC which is another win for convenience. read more

Went here today for lunch with my sweet neighbor and friend Aida. We had a super fun time together and very interesting and lively chat. The service was, as usual, great! We had the best server who was very attentive and we hardly had to ask for anything. I had spinach salad with chicken and Aida had a caesar salad. Live music on one side and we sat on the other but could hear the girl on the piano singing. We ordered an app, an entree, a side, 2 glasses of wine, a still water bottle and a sparkling water bottle. Food was good, but nothing spectacular for the price. Granted we know we were in La jolla so you pay their prices. Our waiter, Valentine was very good and efficient and tried his best to "upsale" us but we were good with our choices. Had a great lunch at Amalfi Llama! The Hamachi Crudo was probably one of my favorite dishes of the day - really, really good. It was light and refreshing, with a subtle yuzu undertone that brightened the whole dish without overpowering the fish. The Truffle Pizza had a great mushroom-forward flavor with a nice garlic accent. It felt very light, which I appreciated, though I personally wish the crust had a bit more crisp and char. For mains, the Ribeye was excellent! Well seasoned, tender, and full of flavor. Definitely my preferred steak of the day. I'd highly recommend pairing it with the Trio Dip, which was a surprisingly great addition and complemented the steak really well. The New York Steak was also good, with solid beefy flavor, but didn't stand out as much as the ribeye. I'd especially recommend ordering it with the trio dip for extra flavor. Trio dip comes with a Serrano salsa, chimichurri, and a béarnaise sauce. For me the chimichurri was the best with the steak, then the serrano- bright and fresh, not spicy. The bearnaise was still good but I felt like not for me with steak. But The Broccolini was another standout side. It had a bright, slightly acidic sauce with just a touch of heat, not too spicy and paired beautifully with the steak. The Shrimp Scampi was good, though a bit different from what I expected. The sauce leaned creamier than a traditional scampi, and it included sun-dried tomatoes. Still, it was flavorful and came with a generous amount of shrimp. Service was also excellent! Staff changed plates between courses and paced everything nicely, which made the meal feel thoughtful and elevated. I recommend sitting outside if you can, the plants and decor really elevate and make a nice experience. read more

Came here with the family for a Father's Day dinner. It's in the UTC mall so plenty of available parking even on a Saturday night. We were nicely greeted at the host stand and immediately seated (we had a reservation, recommended). There are some tables outside, but we chose to dine indoors. The ambiance here is low light and romantic. The restaurant is divided into a bar area and a dining area. There is an open kitchen where you can view the South American style barbecue grill. We were seated close to the bar area, and the music was a bit loud but seemed to be turned down to an acceptable level. The cuisine here is Italian with influences of South American BBQ and was across the board excellent. We chose calamari, tuna tartare and empanadas for starters. The calamari included some deep-fried vegetables including red jalapeno slices that made it special. The short rib empanadas and tuna tartare were excellent as well. For main courses, two of us guys had steaks and the ladies split a rack of lamb, which was perfect for two smaller people. All of the meats were sliced and presented perfectly. In steakhouse style we ordered some grilled mushrooms (fabulous) as well as pureed potatoes and grilled asparagus. We were too sated for dessert and there was no tiramisu on the menu so we passed. For drinks we did wines by the glass and some specialty cocktails. The wines were served at the proper temperature and the cocktails were very good. There was a live artist playing but unfortunately once she was on break, the background music was quite loud and we had a hard time hearing each other. A look at the menu reveals very expensive options and you'll be paying La Jolla prices. We enjoyed a bottle of wine to share which paired nicely especially with the branzino. The branzino was cooked beautifully and had great flavor but did not come with any sides and was priced at $59. The half chicken was also delicious and cooked perfect but also not cheap.The pasta and pizza were just okay and I would skip those. The pasta could have used more lobster and there was nothing special about the pasta or sauce used. We also got a beet salad to pair with the fish which was also very good. We had great service from start to finish and they were very attentive. For dessert, we ordered a cheesecake which was disappointing. It was rather very eggy and lacked a traditional cheesecake texture you would expect. My boyfriend was craving spaghetti and we wanted to try a new restaurant that we've never been to at UTC on a Thursday night. It was either the Amalfi Llama or another restaurant (forgot the name of it) a but we were literally lured in because of the live music!!! There was piano and angelic singing that literally was like the song of the sirens. It was pretty late, they were going to close in 45 minutes but we were able to seat ourselves at the bar. They have reverse happy hour starting at 9pm until close every day which was a nice surprise!! We opted for a drink each, I got the non-alcoholic Elderflower Spritz and my boyfriend got the Passion Fruit cocktail. We started off with 6 Raw Oysters, Tuna Tartar, and Beef Short Rib Empanadas, and ordered the Spaghetti as an entree. The drinks came out first, mine was light and refreshing, and my boyfriend's was tart and def more alc forward than I had expected. The oysters were tiny but deep, I literally hadn't ever had one shaped like it! They didn't end up shucking them all the way probably because it was close to closing, but they were still delicious. It came with horseradish, pickled onions in red vinegar, cocktail sauce, and lemon. We enjoyed them, and actually ended up using the vinegar on the Tuna Tartare because it was salty and heavy and needed something citrus-y to brighten it up. So if y'all order the Tuna Tartar, either ask for lemons or use the red vinegar from the oysters to drizzle on top. The Empanadas were a miss. Meat inside was seasoned well and good, but the puff pastry didn't have any taste. It might have been better executed as 2 empanadas so it's more filling to dough ratio, the Chimichurri Sauce also didn't add much, so I'd def pass on this. Unfortunately, the server forgot to put in our order for Spaghetti so they graciously gave us 2 $20 giftcards to come back. Came back for Happy Hour on the Monday following and in order to have access to the Happy Hour menu you have to sit at the bar. We ordered a couple of pizzas (the Salsiccia and Truffle & Mushroom), Calamari, Shishito Peppers, and Oysters. I liked the Truffle and Mushroom Pizza better than the Salsiccia. The olives threw me off for the Salsiccia. But they do give you fresh grated parmesan which was a nice touch! The Calamari and Shishito Peppers were decent, nothing special. So out of the Happy Hour menu, I'd recommend ordering the Oysters, Tuna Tartar (using the red vinegar from the Oysters), and the drinks. read more

We were given the option of dining inside or outside and we opted for inside. Dimly lit but not too dark, with many tables and booths available. Our server Danny was great! Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout was definitely the ribeye that was cooked to perfection! We got medium rare and they even offered to cut up our steak for us. The only small issue we had was how soft almost overcooked our pasta dish was. We got the capellini and the noodles were a bit on the mushy / soggy side. Besides that, everything else was delectable. We decided to dine here on Saturday evening to celebrate my mom's bday. I made a reservation for 5:30 but we ended up getting seated at 5 because my folks were hangry. The four of us sat in a spacious booth and ordered the shrimp appetizer and a crab cake to share. The seven shrimp in the app were well-cooked, and served in a flavorful & lightly fiery sauce. The crab cake was generously portioned & very tasty. The remoulade that accompanied it was not even needed because the cake itself was that delicious & perfectly cooked. We also ordered a focaccia & it was quite tasty & it partnered well with the fiery sauce from the shrimp. Then the entrees.... My mom and auntie shared the filet & the mushroom risotto and they raved about it. They said the filet was juicy & although it was more medium rare than the medium they requested, they just gobbled it up. I tried the risotto & it was good. Mildly flavored. My dad's shrimp scampi was a little weird. It was not in a typical white wine, garlic, lemon & butter scampi sauce, it was much creamier & cheesier & overly sauced. It was also light on the pasta. He ate it, but if I had ordered it, I may have sent it back. My frutti di mare pasta was good. Nothing to rave about, but tasty and a generous portion. I took 1/2 home. My dad and I tried a smoked apricot sour, and it was smooth, and an easy-drinking whisky cocktail Cesar was our waiter and he took good care of us. He dealt with our many special requests kindly, and overall, was very professional and courteous. Thank you, Cesar! I'm happy to pay more (or even top dollar) for a dining experience that is exquisite and/or consists of expertly prepared items in some way, but the Amalfi Llama's prices seem to be inflated primarily due to their steakhouse moniker and the UTC location, and not because of the fine quality of their food. Parking is free for the first hour in the UTC lot, and $2 for subsequent hours. Overall verdict: this steakhouse has upscale aspirations & in many ways, it delivers. The classy interior, live music & great service are all highlights. However, very high prices, and some food that doesn't quite meet the mark takes some of the shine off of the Amalfi Llama. Fantastic experience tonight for a coworker happy hour turned dinner with a group of 9. The staff was flexible when we arrived and told them we didn't necessarily want a table but to hang in the bar area and take advantage of happy hour. They were super cool about it and the service was amazing. Rodrigo brought all of the aloha to our group. He was very communicative and on top of things. Even when a large party (20+ on the patio) was getting ready to place their orders in the kitchen, he made sure to come by and let us know so we didn't get stuck waiting behind their wave of orders. Happy hour menu had lots of options and we ordered almost everything. Shishitos, short rib empanadas, tuna tartare, 2 flatbreads (both Devine; the mushroom truffle and one with hot honey and cured meat). All great.
