Had lunch with some friends here. TIP - look for the rooftop sign while you are still on the main road (Kaahumanu) because you can't see it from the front if the restaurant. You have to go on some tiny streets that you wouldn't guess there was a restaurant at the end. Service: Hit or miss. Friendly, owner (or Manager?) came by just to say hello. One server wanted to take our order quickly and seemed a bit impatient. Soda order was messed up but no big deal since they came by again quickly. Food came out quickly. Food: very good. You need to ask for the food to be prepared mild or it will be very spicy, per my friend who goes here a lot. We had spring rolls, owner/manager came by to be sure we knew to wrap it in the lettuce leaf, add some vermicelli, and sauce. It was very good, nice and crispy and ingredients were tasty. We also had crispy stir fried noodles (#72) with chicken. Tasty, and the noodles had a nice chewy texture. Crowning glory - the clay pot rice dish with shrimp. Crispy rice from bottom of the pot, tasty sauce, veggies, shrimp - really good. We ordered these three dishes for four of us and there was some left overs. One of our favorite places to go. We've been ordering take out so I'm not sure how inside dining is right now with covid. Service is always good here and the food is always delicious. You can't go wrong. My favorite go to order has been the grilled beef with spring roll. The beef is so tender and cut thin which I love. And who doesn't love spring rolls!? We love Vietnamese food and usually will go to Kihei Plaza area but this Vietnamese restaurant was closed after Covid. Then we found this one and drove a long way to try them out. Thank goodness it didn't disappoint us. As soon as we parked the car, there is a men sitting by the back door told us $5 for parking! What? Then he said just kidding! He took us in and sat us down in a half full restaurant. It wasn't too fancy but very clean with tall ceilings, I like it. They have a good selection of foods in a big menu. They also have a full bar there. We ordered a glass of red wine and my favorite ice coffee, Beef pho combo, grill pork chops, fried spring roll and bitter melon with ground pork in black beans sauce. When the dishes came, omg !! All of them were delicious . The spring rolls were so crispy and yummy! The pork chops were so tasty and the dishes were so big. The beef pho noodles soup was amazing with lots different kinds of meat..The bitter melon dish was so special and I don't get to eat them often because they are so seasonal. 3.5 stars. Food was very good. Hubby got the pho and I got the salmon special. The spices made the salmon taste like salted fish. Texture was perfect. One of the best salmon I've ever tasted. Now the bad, we were seated outside. As soon as the food arrived, a flea landed on the pork spring rolls. All through the meal, we were constantly shooing away flies. Despite our efforts, a fly did land on top of my rice. We both ate as fast as we could. Not an enjoyable dining experience. Will only return for takeout or dining inside, maybe. read more

My bf and I came here during our recent trip to Maui and I'm glad we did, because I'm coming here every time I go to Maui now. We came during lunch time so it wasn't busy and we were seated right away. We ordered the fresh summer rolls, hot and sour fish soup w/ catfish, and chicken curry stew. Summer rolls were summer rolls, but I always enjoy a good summer roll for the veggies and the peanut hoisin sauce. The hot and sour fish soup tasted almost like how my mom makes it at home with the fresh pineapple, veggies, and a TON of catfish. My bf really enjoyed his chicken curry stew, and so did I . I want to go back and try their pho because a gentleman who sat at a table across from us had just finished his pho and told the server that it was the best thing he's ever had (and I assume it was probably his first time trying pho), but that definitely made me put a reminder to come back next time we go to Maui, hehe. read more

A Saigon Cafe was recommended to me by a friend. I popped in one day at lunchtime to order something to bring home to heat up for dinner. I chose the oxtail soup as well as the chicken curry with lemongrass. Both reheated perfectly for my dinner. Chicken lemongrass was pretty spicy but very tasty. The oxtail soup is in a dark broth served with noodles, basil, scallions and was also Yummy. The place was pretty crowded at lunchtime although I could have gotten a seat had I wanted one. And the service was super friendly and welcoming. Just another place I'll be paying another visit to as they have an extensive menu and there are many things on it I would like to try! read more

A Saigon Cafe is usually our last stop ( besides Krispy Kreme & Longs) during our recent weekend trip to Maui. This biz was recommended by a wonderful Yelp friend ( Lien V., if she recommends something I know its good, thank you!) Our first visit was back in Feb. of 2020 and we had to get the shrimp pops on sugar cane ( which was recommended) & the chicken pho! The food was so yummy and love the chicken was so tender! During this recent visit (9/2021), I had to make a stop for the shrimp pops! Noticed price has increase from the first visit but understandable due to pandemic. The friendly gentleman ( noticed him during our first visit) checked our vax card and Identification and got our temperature checked upon entering. I noticed the tables had plastic coverings for safety. I got the shrimp pops (21.95) and duck noodle soup this visit. What is shrimp pops, its shrimp on sugar cane and comes with bun hoi ( steamed rice noodle, I've never had bun hoi for the longest time, my mom use to make this but its really hard work to make) It sure brought back childhood memories. I don't think I can find any business back on Oahu that has bun hoi or shrimp pops. The order comes with rice paper and you make your own Vietnamese rolls ( burritos) I love the bean sprout it is super thin. I need this bean sprouts back on Oahu! We had fun making our own rolls, allow extra time and some work. Everything about this dish was super tasty, even the fish sauce! I had to ask for satay sauce which add the nice spice to our meals. The duck noodle soup ($21.95) a little pricey for this dish had a lot of flavor in the soup, the egg noodle was cooked nice and firm with a huge piece of duck, the duck wasn't as tender and was hard to chew. Despite that we enjoyed it. All in all, we enjoyed both our visits here and def. can't wait to be back. I want to try all different items but the shrimp pops is a must! Great tasty Vietnamese comfort food! & just in case you can't find A Saigon Cafe, it is tucked/hidden in back of apartment complex. The food here was slipping away into tasteless oblivion but has thankfully returned to flavor town. They're just as busy as ever but at opening time (10am) on a Saturday, I had the place all to myself for lunch. Definitely doing that more often. FOOD: Oxtail Vietnamese Soup - $17.95 I have found my new favorite noodle soup dish here! I'm a ramen fanatic but the highlight of this dish was definitely the generous amount of tender oxtail and deliciously beefy broth as opposed to the minute amount of rice noodles. The broth was served hot, flavored with a kiss of sweetness and spice with the perfect amount of salt and seasonings. A plate of fresh bean sprouts and basil came to the side. Highly recommended. My wife and I went to the beach at Paia and were hungry. Vietnamese is my favorite cuisine so we eat it often. Today we went to A Saigon Cafe. I had the special pho (all meats and offal) and my wife had a vermicelli noodle salad with grilled beef (no grilled pork option on the menu-surprisingly). My pho was properly proportioned and appeared as it should have been. However, the broth, which is what great pho is all about, was not good. It was cloudy, which was a bad first sign, as great pho broth is always strained, and it didn't have good flavor; no depth of flavor. The dish was also served without fresh jalapeños. I was disappointed. My wife's salad appeared at first glance to be properly proportioned, with all expected ingredients in the bowl. However, when my wife mixed it al up with the fresh basil and bean sprouts, she noticed there was less meat than expected, the noodles were all chopped up, instead of the normal full size, and the dressing sauce was completely devoid of rice vinegar, so it tasted funky. She usually eats 3/4 of her salad and I finish it off, so when she pushed her bowl over to me with a crinkled nose, I knew something was off. The flavor was just strange without the proper sauce. As part of my wife's dish she also got two chopped up deep-fried egg rolls. Again, they didn't serve the dish with the proper sauce, so the flavor was off. Also, the rolls were clearly previously frozen as they were mush inside. A disappointing dining experience. read more

It's the same building and the same bartenders. Some of the staff are different but the main thing is the cook in the way they cook is different and it appears to be more like Cantonese Chinese food then Vietnamese style food. The clay hot pot I had was good and it did come with a it came with good mushrooms and a decent sauce over chicken.. we had a big bitter melon dish, which the only the only protein they offered with it was a pork source which we declined. That dish was definitely better under the former owners.. they still practice some Covid precautions which is a favorable thing and it's a nice looking place with adequate parking. This type of restaurant seems to be being squeezed by food trucks or restaurants to provide less service. I still like it but unfortunately I wouldn't call it special anymore. read more

This restaurant was the needle in the haystack for me. I've visited Vietnamese restaurants before and seen pho and spring rolls. These folks take the cooking to a whole new level with a multipage menu that offers noodle dishes, vegetable dishes, pork dishes, fish dishes and goes on and on. I almost didn't get to eat because there were too many things I wanted to try! Fortunately a friend helped to select the dishes and each one was prepared carefully so appealed visually and in flavor. I had fish and it was delicious! The servers are great and don't mind being asked what the particulars are of each dish. It was a wonderful experience and is now on my list of places to visit when I'm on Maui again. read more

Came here on a weeknight evening shortly before closing and it was PACKED. Menu is really impressively extensive and hits a majority of Vietnamese food you may be craving. Owner is hilarious and great. Ambience is nice. We were all very pleasantly surprised by how tasty out food was. Pho broth was full and hearty and just the right flavor. My one qualm is that the portions are pretty small, from the bean sprouts, herbs and lime to the bowl of pho (mostly broth and very little noodle). read more

This dish is our #1 favorite but not in this case. The Shrimp were very-very tough, you needed a sharp knife to cut it into pieces you can eat. I told the bartender and he remarked...."It was probably overcooked". Make sure you mention to your server not to overcook the Shrimp. The other items were great. Never disappointed whenever we visit. There aren't many VIETNAMESE restaurants in Maui. This one is authentic and it certainly shows by the number of people who flock here for a great meal. You know it's authentic when the loud dint of dining noise is filled with the melodic sounds of the Vietnamese language. Beyond the usual pho favorites, try the baked chicken and ala carte dishes. The wraps are also a great treat. Don't forget a cup of Cafe SUS da or iced coffee - made with the usual Vietnamese twist of sweet condensed milk. If it looks like pho, smells like pho but doesn't taste like pho then what do you have? I'll let you decide on the answer to that question. A Saigon Cafe is highly reviewed and conveniently located. My friend and I came here to have a nice bowl of pho. The price tag for it was comparable to another restaurant I went to for pho previously. A Saigon Cafe actually has bowls and plates as to the other restaurant being takeout containers. Huge plus when having pho. You're also dining inside a restaurant vs outside. They have a restroom as well. Problem is that the bowl of pho here is not what I was expecting. The broth didn't have a deep beef flavor and their meat quality is not the standard of most places I've dined at. Sad to say, the condiments didn't help the bowl taste any better. It's rare that I don't eat what I order but after a few bites I was done. I couldn't eat anymore so 2.5 stars. Service was friendly but I didn't get a refill of water while I was there. Would I come back again? Probably not for pho but I'm glad I had the opportunity to check them out once. Maybe their other dishes taste better? #3 on the menu promised Cha Gio wrapped in RICE PAPER and fried. I was crushed when they brought almost burnt egg rolls wrapped in regular Chinese egg roll wrappers. Just wrap in lettuce with vermicelli the menu says. The noodles were fat rice noodles not vermicell. Very, very disappointed. The Pho broth was not very flavorful. No basil or jalapeño on the condiment plate just a handful of bean sprouts and an afterthought sprig of mint leaves. read more
