I wish I had more pictures to share but it'll have to wait for next time, as we were all too hungry and no time for pictures. I recommend trying their brown rice and crispy shrimp and tako are a must! They even have yummy steak bites and I think it was steamed Opakapaka. But seriously, I haven't tried anything that wasn't good. Even their water is already pre-lemoned. lol. First place we ate on the island of Maui-after getting into town. Ricked ordered a stir fry tofu. The veggies were fresh and the tofu was cooked soft they way he likes it. The biggest problem was his dish was salty. Other than it was great. I had sweet and sour tofu. My tofu was cooked crispy the way I like it. After the Hana highway drive, we were craving for something soups, so went here. The place was empty around 4, My husband got mi vit tiem, duck noodles and kids and I got pho. We had papaya salad, crepe and Vietnamese burrito or banh hoi. - papaya salad ($12) is very fresh with mints and large shrimp. - Vietnamese crispy crepe or banh xeo ($15): the shell is perfectly crispy, filled with shrimp, ground pork and bean sprouts, served with fresh veggie and fish sauce. - Saigon specialty Banh hoi bo lui or Vietnamese self create burrito $16: vermicelli cake noodle with grilled beef rolls wrapped in thin rice paper with lettuce, mints, cucumber and pickle dipped in fish sauce. The beef is grilled perfectly, very tender with hinted of lemon grass. Overall, all three dishes are very authentically prepared and tasty. We arrived about 8:15 pm on a Friday evening and got our order approx 8:45 pm. We asked for rice three bowls of rice 3 times during the evening. The manager/owner kept saying, "Don't worry about it." And kept cracking jokes which none of us laughed at but instead smiled politely. We received our rice only after we were almost completely done with our entrees and they gave us four rice bowls. I don't know if they charged us for the fourth bowl since our friend got the tab. Food was average for a Vietnamese Restaurant. The half chicken was soft but not as tasty. This review is for their rice plates. A couple plates that I keep coming back to- #46- Shredded Pork, Grilled Beef and Egg (aka Com Bi Thit Nuong Cha) over steamed rice and served with fresh veggies. It's such great balance of the meat with the crunch of the lettuce, cucumber and shredded carrots. #69- Sweet and Sour Pork (aka Suon Heo Chua Ngot) over steamed rice. I usually have their pho when I'm sick, #25 Special Combination (Rare Steak, Meatball, Tendon, Tripe) (aka Pho Dac Biet). I've been eating here for the last 10 years and love their food. 9 times out of 10 I'm usually ordering their rice plates. Charlie is great. He has that harsh personality at first where you're not sure if he's joking or serious, but if you become a regular he treats you like family. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is the customer service. The gentleman is friendly and funny but seems understaffed. I'm a sucker for pho and have ordered it here a few times and frankly it's disappointing... I can tell the broth is homemade but it's so bland. Really a shame, no good pho on Maui. I think anything else besides pho is probably better here. I ordered the Buddha rolls and I liked them a lot. Very flavorful for a vegetarian fresh summer roll. Pricey but yummy. Our last meal during our visit to Maui and it was great. Don't get turned off when you are driving down an access road and see the surrounding area. The service was friendly, charming and they had lots of great suggestions. Some traditional dishes but also some cool mash-ups and even a pretty good selection of vegetarian items. We were craving some Vietnamese food, so we took a short drive to A Saigon Cafe, a low-key Vietnamese restaurant in Wailuku town. Some say that the place is hard to find, but with several "shooting stars" lighting up the rooftop, who could miss it? We decided to do this family style, and ordered three different plates: Crispy Calamari ($12.95) -- lightly batteries and deep fried until golden crispy, tamarind dipping sauce, the One-Pound New York Steak ($24.95) -- seasoned and charbroiled, white rice, sautéed vegetables, and the Garden Party Sautéed Shrimp ($19.95) -- lightly battered shrimp, romaine lettuce, onion-ginger topping. Although we enjoyed both the calamari and the shrimp, we noticed that, because the batter on each seemed similar, both of the ran into the same problem -- a slight lack of browning and crispniess. It seems that a slightly extending cooking time on each of these would have done the trick. On the plus side, the chips served with the calamari are addictive, and go very well with the tamarind sauce. The onion-ginger topping on the shrimp was also wonderful, as it added some freshness and aggressive flavoring to balance the battered shrimp. The NY Steak was also very good, especially when paired with the delicious sautéed veggies. We just wished that the chefs better accounted for the fact that the steak would continue to cook on the sizzling platter that they serve it on, as by the time we got to eating it, the steak was more well done rather than the medium that we requested. Even when factoring in these peripheral errors, A Saigon Cafe still earns 5 stars in our rubric. read more

Tried this place out yesterday after reading multiple reviews about how great their pho was. I was really excited because I never had pho on Maui, and I've been here for a couple months craving it. Parking was ample, wait time was very quick, the service was great. However the pho was not the best tasting and also bland (even by my standards, I don't ever usually use any extra sauce in my pho, last night was an exception!), the noodle ratio was a little off as well. I had to order a side order of rice (one scoop for $3.00) because there was so much meat and very little noodle. I was going to initially start with the pho and order something else on the side to take home, but after having the pho I was so unsatisfied and ready to go, and my server took my menu that I asked to hold after placing the initial order. Just like the other 3 star review, I am also not from Maui, I am from Oahu, so maybe that is why I don't agree the pho is on par with all the other great reviews, but to each their own. read more

My friend and I ordered two specials of the day: the Bitter Melon with Black Bean Sauce and the Vietnamese Crepes. I'd been craving bitter melon for a while so I was excited to see it on the menu. Both dishes were really good and only $12.95 each. However, our waiter had a strange sense of humor. I asked him what the shrimp sauce in the Bitter Melon with Pork dish tasted like, and he said (trying to be funny, I think?) that it tasted like nothing. I couldn't get a more serious answer from him so I went with the black bean sauce option instead. He cracked so many jokes that when he told my friend to roll her crepe like a joint, she wasn't sure if he was being serious or not. Once again...it was a random stop on a day we were lazy to cook. Oh boy....we were NOT disappointed. We got the Crispy Calamari, Fried Fish of the day (Mahi Mahi) with Black Bean Sauce and Crispy Noodles with beef. We had to have the calamari again. Perfectly breaded. Their dipping sauce is a cross between shoyu, fish sauce & mirin. Whatever it is soooooo good! The fried crispy was absolutely delicious. One suggestion just get the noodles regular. Once the sauce gets on it. It makes it soggy. But I really didn't mind. The beef was so tender and the vegetables was perfectly cooked. Soft but still had a snap to them. HOLY MOSES! The fish. All i can say...give me a bowl of rice with the fish and put me in the corner. It was soooo good! The fish was perfectly seasoned. Breaded juuuuust right...and that sauce. OHHHH...MY.....GAHHHHH.... This place is in a really awkward location...it's tucked between a highway exit ramp and an apartment building. Finding your way there from the highway and finding parking is a challenge. Was quickly greeted by a hostess before we even entered the restaurant and seated immediately. Booths are surrounded on 3 sides by plastic barriers for social distancing. Staff were prompt to take orders. They were also helpful in making suggestions with their rather large menu. One knock is that the hostess never gave us the right amount of forks and chopsticks. We were given 2 chopsticks and 3 forks for 4 people. They were also not set in place but rather placed in a pile at the edge of the table. Nobody ever offered to give us more...and it was difficult to flag down anyone to address the missing utensils. This was a negative experience. We never did receive the needed utensils. We ordered spring rolls, chicken wings, 2 bowls of rare steak pho, and the clay pot with shrimp and chicken. The spring rolls were good. Served with white noodles, lettuce leaves and a vinegar/ginger/carrot dipping sauce. Chicken wings appeared to be deep fried and were juicy, but were greasy and a little bland. I wouldn't recommend the wings. They looked better in the pictures. The pho was on par with a generous portion of steak and noodles. I was hoping for more dressings for the pho (bean sprouts, basil, citrus, etc). For two bowls of pho, was given about half as much as what I'm normally used to. My wife said the broth was sweeter in taste than she likes. I would agree the broth is sweet. The clay pot chicken and shrimp appeared to include no shrimp at all...only chicken. It tastes a lot like chicken fried rice but with a caramelization on the rice cooked at the bottom of the pot. It was pretty good. The prices were fine for the pho ($12) but were a little high for the clay pot item ($18?). Appetizers were $8 and $11. Overall, spent about $80 with a very generous tip for our servers during these tough times for restaurant owners and employees. Pretty good, but nothing amazing. Attention to detail could be improved and location could be better. read more
