I've only been to the Green Parrot Grille once and wasn't impressed. It seemed more a spot to get drinks than the seafood I was hoping for. My definition of the cuisine is "bar food". That said, I was predisposed to not be a fan. The space was the long time home of Frankie's Seafood, which I dearly loved. Frankie's was one of the first "old school" seafood spots to fall prey to an aging patron base. The eatery was now different, with the ambience of a beach bar rather than the old booths and tables to which I was accustomed. The restaurant location is hidden backb off of Lookout Road where there's access to the beach for the locals as well as the public, however, the parking can be a nightmare. This isn't a restaurant to go you're easily offended by the locals enjoying their alcohol and music as inappropriate language and loudness is going on. I truly enjoyed the Brie but I think it would taste a lot better on Granny Smith and not the soft red apple it was served with. The shrimp were a very nice colossal size and steamed to perfection. My crab cakes encrusted with cornflakes was a nice flavor and just crispy enough. The cheese grits were ok. I expected the cheese to be melted into the grits and not just shredded over them and they were a bit dry. My overall rating was due to parking and no valet, the crowd and loudness/language use and #1 because our waitress Barbara charged us $7 for a glass of wine that was not ordered. When I asked for my second glass my step sister stressed absolutely not for her second glass so how she'd go back and add in another for her is beyond me. That was a new try restaurant for all 3 of us and being ripped off tainted it for me going back!! Our bull was $199.67 so the $7 didn't matter EXCEPT we didn't order it and made it clear. We also had the flash-fried Calamari for an appetizer. The parmesan cheese dusted with garlic parmesan sauce was a nice new twist for us. read more

There's a thick, bold line between "unrefined working-class bar" and "unrepentant shithole." As I'm seated, the first thing I see is a cherry tomato sitting next to the baseboard in plain site. Not under the table or hidden where it could easily be overlooked. The waitress is friendly but takes a long time to take our orders and the reason is obvious. As she takes our order, she has crumbs on her lips from whatever she was snacking on in the kitchen. The food was not great. My salad was brought to me with the waitress' thumb in it and it was obvious it was not made that day. Everything else is basically fried with old bay seasoning on top. I can't express how lousy all the restaurants in this specific part of the neighborhood are. They all need to be renovated and/or need a deep cleaning. Service was slow & not attentive at all. They just took your order, delivered food, then brought your check. I had to flag them down or get up to get their attention if I needed anything. They didn't even ask if I needed anything else after delivering food. I actually had to get up to ask for something to stir my coffee with. Utensils still had dried food on it even though it was washed. So I had to ask for hot water so I can soak it clean. They brought me 2 hot water but only 1 of them was hot. The first one was lukewarm coz I can dip my finger in it. I ordered the classic Benny or the eggs Benedict. It was swimming in hollandaise sauce. You know you're in a locals joint when you immediately have the urge to turn back around upon entering the place. The stare down that happened was from every direction! Or maybe they were just looking for their friends... The service is okay, the staff is friendly, and the food is okay. The times I've been there have been after a day of drinking so I don't really want to drink much more. I've still had a couple of their drinks though. The Orange Dream Crush is probably my favorite because it's a mix of my adulthood and childhood. If I'm in the area, I tend to stop in but I'm not going out of my way to hit it. read more

Wish I could rate this lower than 1 star. I will never go here again. Me and some friends tried to go in and were denied at the door saying that we were not old enough to get in... we are all 25. He wouldn't take any of our IDs just said we weren't allowed in. We had just bought a Uber there so $25 was wasted getting there and all I wanted to do was sing karaoke. Just because I "look too young" I wasn't allowed in. I just don't understand... check my ID and let me in? What do you want me to do? The bouncer was also very physical with us , hiding inside the entrance and pulling the door shut when we tried to open it and talk to him. He refused to get me anyone else to talk to and was very rude and unprofessional. There was 4 of us trying to get in, We weren't drunk, not causing any issues so there was absolutely no reason for security to act like this towards us. My advice to the bar is get better security and not some lazy dude that doesn't check IDs and takes money away from your bar.. read more

They have an amazing really cheesy crab dip and the peel and eat shrimp is great But that fish sandwich was amazing... It was about an inch and a half thick and just flaky, fresh and fabulous ! A coworker of mine recommended this place to my boyfriend and I, as we have drastically different tastes for food. I'm fairly picky, but my boyfriend will eat anything. The food was really good, I got a bacon burger, and I believe he got a burrito. He was iffy about it being fried, think he was in the mood for a more traditional burrito. My burger was great, the buns were actually really good. Usually at the places we go, the buns on burgers can be dried out, or overly hard like pretzel ones, or even soggy. But I was pleasantly surprised here. We also got a drink, it was an orange dreamsickle drink, that was probably my favorite part! I was surprised you couldn't taste ANY alcohol in it. Having orange juice in it, normally you'd have some acidity which lends itself to the alcohol taste, but the whipped vodka and I believe tequila (?) they put in, it literally tasted just like an orange dream bar. 10/10, hope they keep offering that on the menu. The atmosphere was pretty casual, but professional. The space was smaller but pretty realistic for being like right by the beach. Literally a block away. I still like the Parrot, but I've found that you should stick to the bar food offered & not the seafood/entree dinners. It's definitely not worth the price. We ordered the tuna bites for an appetizer & there was a strong fishy taste. It reminded me of when I've bought frozen tuna from Trader Joes. I almost changed my mind for my entree, but decided against my better judgement & ordered the broiled scallops. I only received about 6 small ones. They were chewy and about as fresh as frozen ones can taste. Two sides came with so I chose the cheese grits & mixed veggies. The mixed veggies were straight from one of those microwavable steamer bags. Thank goodness that the cheese grits were yummy, because for $22 I felt super ripped off. I feel bad giving the place negative reviews, because I do enjoy coming there & they have yummy burgers/sandwiches. They also have great happy prices & daily specials. Went here tonight for dinner with my husband. Wasn't a great experience. Came in and got waters immediately but our waitress disappeared for about 15 minutes before she came back to get our order. We waited about half an hour for our food to come out. We were not impressed when it came. My mashed potatoes were pretty bland and my sandwich was nothing special. My husband's meal was about the same. We had to ask another waitress for our check (because ours disappeared again) and waited another 10-15 minutes for her to bring it out. This was probably my 4th time eating here in the past couple of years. I've always enjoyed this spot. This visit was a little questionable. The first thing I noticed was a half clean half moldy dirty dish rag smell throughout the restaurant. Sat back and watched some football. My friend and I ordered Blue Cheese Garlic Fries & 1/2 Greek Salad w/ Scallops. The Blue Cheese Garlic fries were drenched w/ Blue Cheese (unlike the last time I had them). I don't recall as much dressing last time...mostly blue cheese crumbles. They were still good if you love blue cheese....good fresh garlic pieces in this dish. Salad was ok..Scallops were not pan fried to perfection like my last visit but, still cooked just right. My last visit the scallops had that brown toasted pan crisp coating. This time it was more like they were steamed maybe? Maybe they didn't use butter this time? Different chef? Not sure... While I enjoyed my food during this visit, the first couple of visits were much better. A local favorite of mine. The food is great, love the atmosphere and the service is good. The burgers are delicious, I also recommend the buffalo chicken wrap. The fries are great but I always get cheese fries. Oh, fish tacos... Very tasty. This place is great to just go and grab a drink as well. It's a great bar & they have live entertainment on the weekends. Do to noise ordinance laws the bands are acoustic now. Still, this place is great. As far as price goes, it really depends on what you order. To just grab a sandwich and a soda/water you will be under $10. Add a beer, now you're into the $11-30 price range. Very much a local hangout. Seems like everybody knew everybody else which is a good thing unless you're an (outsider). We've lived in Hampton Roads for 25 years but never heard of this place because we're not from chicks beach (which is ok). We went here because we purchased a groupon (which is how we heard of this place), we were excited because my husband and I prefer visiting local small businesses over big chain restaurants any day. The atmosphere reminded me of cheers where everyone knows your name...a good place for drinks (we went early a little before noon), I was surprised how many people were at the bar (drinking not eating), but hey...as the saying goes it's 5 o'clock somewhere. I'm not judging, just my observation which is why I'm saying probably a good place for drinks. The food however was unremarkable. I'm giving The Green Parrot five stars for what it says it is, a Chic's Beach Watering Hole that serves good bar food. Nothing more, but nothing less either. If you're looking for fine dining, move on. If you're looking for a casual place for you and your better half to get a drink and some comfort food after a day at the beach without spending a bundle, Voilà!! We started with the Crab Balls. Imagine large round hush puppies stuffed with crab meat instead of corn meal. Awesome!! We shared them while waiting on our drinks. Next the quarter head of iceberg wedge to share. Very fresh with the grape tomatoes, small diced red onion and cucumber with crumbled blue cheese dressing and bacon bits, then drizzled with a balsamic reduction. My wife had the Big Ass Steamed Shrimp with Old Bay. A generous helping of jumbo shrimp to peel-n-eat. Her favorite. I had the Dirty Bird Burrito. A giant throw everything in but the kitchen sink burrito we shared. Pieces of chicken, shrimp, and chorizo with small diced peppers and onions, cheese and rice covered in a salsa verde.
