As an African American woman, I felt confused, saddened, and deeply uncomfortable. It was difficult not to question why we were being separated from everyone else. With respect, I explained to the waitress that I did not want to sit "in the back" and politely asked if we could be seated in the same area as the other guests. She appeared visibly annoyed and stated that she would have to go ask someone. At that moment, I had no desire to argue or create a confrontation. No one should have to feel unwelcome or question whether they are being treated differently while simply trying to enjoy a meal. Rather than endure further embarrassment or discomfort, my friend and I quietly chose to leave. It was frustrating to experience something that made me feel unseen and separated while spending my money just like every other customer. I am not my ancestors, and I refuse to accept being made to feel hidden, excluded, or less deserving because of the color of my skin.
