I don't give many fives on a first visit and my overall first experience was a very pleasant surprise that delivered excellent fresh food, great margarita and service in very colorful atmosphere . We chose the place because it was close by where we were doing business in the area. From the outside I figured your run of the mill Mexican in a strip mall . As soon as we entered and seated by the friendly host we enjoyed the day of dead decor. We settled on a citrus shrimp dish served in a cast iron dish which was different, fresh, that includes a side salad that was filled with fresh veggies and rice to accompany the shrimp with warm tortillas. The daily special margarita was excellent and tasted better than expected for a daily special. I will make the 40 minute drive to return very soon. read more

Part 2 We made another trip here. I will have to say they have the best street tacos I've ever had in my life. Great hidden gem that needs to be checked out if you're a taco fan. We will definitely be back there again whenever we are in the Mebane area. Only thing I can say in the negative was all the wait staff was huddled up in a booth staring at there phones the whole time we where there. Our waitress who took good care of us was one of those in the booth. It didn't make any difference to us but some people would think that they were just sitting there not doing anything. We had a wonderful lunch at Catrina's in Mebane. I got chile relleno, cheese enchilada, rice and black beans. Surprisingly cheap as a $9 lunch special. And it was really good. Even the chips while we waited were good, fresh corn chips. The relleno wasn't fried, it was stuffed with goodies, delicious. The enchilada was covered in mole sauce, not my favorite, but still good. I got a sweet tea: warning: it is very sweet. The service was quite prompt. I enjoyed the decor, beautiful paintings all over of Dia de los Meurtos style. Went in for our cinco de mayo lunch and once again had a great time. Wonderful decor everywhere, great music playing, employees all very attentive and helpful. Food comes out pretty quick and is nice and hot. If you're in the mood for a carne asada then this is a great place to go. If you like choriqueso get the queso con carne, it comes nice and hot on a skillet. Marga beer was made well, and the beer pitcher was a great price on the deal they had going. Super casual Mexican restaurant with Day of the Dead decorations all throughout. My husband and I had no wait for a table on a Saturday night. Everyone gets free chips & salsa. The chips were nice and hot (temperature wise). I ordered the Taco Salad. You can pick whatever protein you wanted for it, so I ordered ground beef. Overall the taco salad was good, but I had a few critiques. It came out almost immediately after ordering it, which was slightly awkward because they did not have my husband's dish sent out until maybe 6-7 minutes later. There was also way too much beef in it. My husband ordered a margarita with his meal and enjoyed that. Our server was very nice. When you walk into the restaurant the first impression is, there is lots of decorative details. They have an alter and decor for Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, the celebration of life and death. There are Latin celebrities on walls, Mexican decorations that entertain you as you wait for a server to take your order. The food is as detailed as the decor. I had the best plantains ever. The guacamole was very different, not bad, but surprisingly different. The street tacos had developed authentic taste. Waiter took our drink order and brought them right away. Waiter is efficient but not overly friendly. Started with the chorizo dip which comes out in a cast iron skillet and chips. Skillet keeps the queso warm and soft, more should do this. Ordered the chimichangas as my meal, comes with beans and rice. Great quality and a decent portion size for the price. Street tacos are excellent, no matter which meat you choose. The desserts are excellent. I recommend trying the money bag. White chocolate raspberry cheesecake cinched up in a tortilla with ice cream. I added a pic to show that off. Churros also very good. Pretty solid Mexican restaurant, and a "must try" I hear from the Mebane locals. The food was above average for the most part. Menu was good and extensive, while having a few extra items and ingredients you normally do not see at your other typical Mexican establishments. The birria tacos were full of flavor and full of meat, only downfall is that it was super greasy often I had to use several napkins to eat. The guacamole was good though needed some lime, and I did not like how it came with chips already in your guacamole. Another item that could have been executed better was the elote (street corn). I was looking forward to this side the most but lacked any cotija cheese and just covered in butter and a small dash of Tajin. Y'all! This Catrinas Restaurant is "Oh My!" Good! My wife and I had a few of their street tacos and you can totally tell when fresh ingredients are being served. OMG, so damn good! The food was awesome and generous portions. I knew this was my kind of place when they have Valentina sauce on every table. But, I was so very pleasantly surprised when I never even reached for it because the food was so perfectly spiced and fresh. Had a wonderful Modelo Beer from the tap and this was just a perfect meal. So come for the superb food, but the decor and ambiance is crazy fun. It's like you walked into a Day of the Dead festival in Mexico. So authentic and nostalgic! Love, love, love this place. Im excited to return and try out that awesome looking Tequila cocktail menu. There is a lot to try here. The service staff is happy and perfectly attentive. I mean, big tip because this place was firing on all cylinders tonight. We arrived at 830 and they close at 9, which I wish was 930, but we were not rushed or pushed. We worked up an appetite shopping at the Mebane Outlets. I searched for food in Mebane, and this place came up. Approaching the parking lot was sketchy. We entered and were satisfied with how it looked inside. The inside was well lit, and the Mexican decor was nice. The hostess was welcoming, but I wouldn't say I liked how she piled everyone up in one area. Why not space out the crowds that are not together?! I ordered the beef chimichanga with rice and beans. The beef was highly seasoned and pretty good. I also ordered the queso. Initially, it was pretty runny, but it thickened up after it cooled down. Updating my review and bumping up to five stars after several takeout orders from Catrina's over the past year. When it comes to some restaurants I feel like it takes a few tries to figure out which menu items really wow you, and that was sort of the case here - but man, their taquitos, sopa de tortilla, and maduros are it for me! I also love that they offer online ordering and curbside pickup at this time. When we ordered today, the online service was not working (though it has worked in the past for us), but it was still very easy to call and place our order over the phone. Lunch prices are super reasonable - mostly $8 and under! *one thing to note, there is currently (Feb 2021) a lot of construction around this exit and the shopping center Catrina's is located in. Instead of turning directly into the shopping center, you'll need to turn onto HWY 119 and then take the immediate right. Easy peasy. read more

In search for tacos on my trip back from VA, I came across Catrinas offering lots of options for tacos which I certainly appreciated. There was lots of construction going on at the time which made it hard to access the restaurant from the main street. I called in my order for 3 tacos(blackened mahi, scallop, and a veggie) and they were all amazing and perfectly portioned. A few months later I returned to try the blackened mahi bowl with rice, pinto beans, lettuce, corn pico, black beans, avocado and queso fresco and a #50's scallop dish with rice, peppers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, corn pico and queso sauce and it was so good and I see why it's considered a local favorite.
