One plumber could install a gas line only, another plumber could install a gas line and the gas cooktop but not the hood, and an appliance installation technician could not install the cooktop because he could not cut into the existing granite top. So I found Max of MRI Construction and Remodeling on Yelp, and he said that he could do the work within that original scope -- cooktop, hood, and gas line -- but that we should anticipate a backup plan in case the granite cracked during installation. Because we plan to live in this house for as long as possible, we decided to go through a full kitchen renovation. We had a prior experience with another general contractor who was impossible to get a hold of and who could not ensure the quality of the subcontractors he hired, and interviewed another general contractor who gave us the impression that we would have to engage with suppliers and subcontractors more than seemed feasible. We are happy to say that we just finished our kitchen renovation last week! And it was finished a week earlier than scheduled. We are thankful to Max and his team of subcontractors! We are really happy with the final kitchen, given how much we cook at home. And surprisingly the process was easy despite its size and time of 6 weeks. Max has the strengths and qualities you want for your construction projects: he's incredibly responsive, honest and communicative, and willing and able to troubleshoot issues that come up, as they invariably do, both small and large. He makes recommendations if you ask and gives you options for decisions for which there are too many options. He works with an amazing group of subcontractors who are experts in their craft. There was an exception with one subcontractor but Max was able to get that course-corrected so that the project finished strong. We appreciate his integrity and his willingness to ensure that the project meets your needs and expectations. We had Luke Hiller back to replace all of the rest of the floors in our 1942 home just before…read moreChristmas (2013). Our 20'x30' den had 1985 reddish brown short pile carpet that was in amazingly good condition for its age -- it was really OLD! Luke asked if we wanted the den to match the original floor in the rest of the house. I said YES! So he ordered part red oak, part yellow oak and part #1, which contains pieces with knots and dark streaks. The job took several days due to the demolition of the old carpet and repairs to the squeaky sub-floor and, of course the installation, sanding, filling, leveling and multiple coats of finish of the new wood. I was good and didn't peek beyond the plastic sheeting that was used to protect the rest of the home from the dust. I waited to look until the first coat of finish went down. I was thinking "I wonder how I am going to 'feel' about this new floor." Wood, for me, is a very evocative substance -- I just love wood. When I looked it didn't feel like a "new" floor. It had the same look and feel of the old 1942 floor. Luke's installer did a marvelous job of mixing and integrating the 3 types of oak together to make a floor that looks like it was installed at the same time as the rest of the floors. We also had the kitchen and bath floors replaced with a vinyl that looks exactly like stone. Everyone that walks on it and thinks it's stone, but it's a very high end vinyl. A good friend has this floor in her home in Virginia. She took a picture of the box for me. Luke worked very hard to find the product because the manufacturer and the license for this product had been sold twice since my friend purchased it! The installation of the kitchen floor matched perfectly with the old floor and the new floor. It is perfectly flat with no transitions between the rooms required! We had a couple of little missteps in the job (like any construction project) but Luke showed up personally and surveyed the problems and had his crew, or he, himself fixed it on the spot. Luke even crawled under the house to run my surround sound cabling and pushed it up into the boxes his installers had sunk into the floor. I couldn't be happier with Luke Hiller and highly recommend him for your next floor refinishing, replacement or new construction project.

We have a 1940's house with original oak hardwood floors that needed patching from where we removed the old floor furnace. I decided to call Luke Hiller based on another Yelp review I saw here that had the same situation. The color match is perfect and Jonathan and his crew cleaned up everything beautifully. His team set up a solid containment, performed the work to scope, and passed clearance testing with a third party company. They also offered to leave their containment up (including some temp poles) for the duration of my build-back project. The team was careful of my house during the demo which involved carrying large, heavy pieces of shower glass down some stairs and through some turns. The only downside I found during the process was the need to pay for the site visit for the quote. This payment is credited to the bill and it wound up being a non-issue due to selecting BH environmental for the job, but none of the other companies I had out requested payment for the quoting visit.

None of this process was communicated clearly to us. I appreciate the owner's effort to make it right with a refund of the fee. I wouldn't even recommend requesting an estimate from these people. I wish I hadn't. The star is because someone technically came out. They were the only ones who charged a fee to come out, and their inspector spent a total of maybe 50 seconds in the bathroom that had water damage. The person who came out told us would have an estimate within a day, and no estimate. Unlike the other companies that came out, he made no inquiry about the age of the house or mention of required asbestos testing. Overall, his visit did not inspire confidence that any estimate we did get (if we got one) would be valid or accurate (not require change orders). Maybe the reason why some reviewers say they're cheaper is that they cut corners? (We wouldn't know as we never got our estimate.) We were really dissatisfied even with our (extremely brief) visual inspection experience. Communication with respect to the process was not good (as we don't know what's going on). Clearly my short list selection process failed me here. ETA: Apparently they were waiting on payment for the estimate (no one made clear what this process was), which we finally got, and indeed did not include asbestos testing.
