Last season I was advised by my oil company that my old furnace was still running but she would need to be replaced soon. It's 30+ years old. Thank goodness she made it through the season. In the middle of the heat wave my AC unit went. Again my oil company came and made the repair, but said that the compressor was original and should be replaced ASAP. When I called them, they told me that they were booked solid and referred me to RJS. THANK GOODNESS THAT THEY DID!!! Within two days Ron had contacted me to set up an appointment to give an estimate. He looked at my equipment and told me what I needed. He also suggested a new oil tank. I asked him to write it up and we will work it out. Within 4 days I had a full written estimate in the mail. His price was a full $7,000 cheaper than a larger HVAC complany in the area. Once I contacted him we set up a date. I was only without AC for about 6 hours. They made quick work of getting all of the equipment in and set up. Day two was getting the oil tank in set back up. I speak enough about the benefits of using a REPUTABLE small business. During that time he or an employee have been to the house three times. Each time, between the time I called and when they showed up, things would start working properly again. So they would try to diagnose the issue based on my description and do what seemed to be appropriate, and things would be fine for a while but eventually the problem would recur. So yesterday he showed up with an expensive piece of equipment to properly diagnose the issue, and having done so, brought in another expensive piece of equipment to fix the problem. He was there for over two hours, and along the way, he mentioned what he normally charges for use of that equipment because of what it cost him. I was OK with it; I was just happy to have the problem finally fixed. But when he was done, he said that he wasn't happy about the past "misdiagnoses" and I shouldn't have to pay for them, and he ended up charging me about a third of what I was expecting. When I offered to meet him halfway, he said, "Sorry, I've already entered it into the system, nothing I can do." I can't promise that you'll get price breaks like I got on this occasion, but I can promise that you won't get ripped off, and that you'll get excellent service.

They were on time, checked out the AC, added coolant and then took a quick peek at the furnace. They said both look good for the age (17 years) and should be good for a while. I had questions about rebates for heat pumps and he had answers about rebates, rough costs and advantages of the new heat pumps. He reiterated that we didn't need to change out our current equipment but if we feel it's important for environmental reasons there are good options. We'll definitely be using them going forward, and have a fall furnace checkup scheduled.

On the first cold day this winter he claims the heater is all rusted out in the exchanger and has to be replaced, along with the entire system because a new heater can't work with an old air conditioner. Our neighbor suggested we call their guy. He's been in business for 30 years. Needless to say, the heater was not rusted he showed me the unit was very dirty, the fan motor and wheel were clogged with dirt and there were two dead birds in the chimney.
